There are lots of shops crowded together.
This market is a large, densely packed type, with many shops packed into a large building. However, I was not able to enter the market due to the Obon holiday.

Arrived there around 8am and lots of stalls are still open. Bought freshly cut sashimi from the fish stalls and eat on the bench right outside the market as breakfast. Seems peach is in season and no more white strawberries were available. Bought some normal strawberries, not really sweet but much fresher than supermarkets'.

A very interesting morning stroll through the fish market - the variety of the fare for sale (seafood but also seaweed and vegetables) is astounding. As most things in Japan, the place is immaculately clean and well-organized. However, unlike other fish markets in Tokyo, Osaka etc this is not a tourist destination - one is spared the embarrassment as one of the gawking hordes. I did feel self-conscious as I snapped a few photos among the hard-working people, just as I felt sorry for the live fish (see attached puffer photo), turtles and other water creatures for sale. The animal cruelty strictures have not yet migrated to Asia, even to ostensibly civilized countries such as Japan where one regularly sees live de-shelled turtles as they move in their packages for sale in supermarkets.
Be the first to ReplyMedium sized wholesale market
I came late so a large number of shops has closed for the day. The few shops that was open cater for the wholesale market. I went to ODA a market in the next building and I find the prices that is quite attractive for retail buyers.
Be the first to ReplyMuch better than Kuromon Ichiba Market
While most tourists will go to Kuromon Ichiba Market, this is a less well known wholesale market for fishes, meats & fruits in Osaka but I like it much better where you can see more local buyers & real actions. However, this market doesnโt have that many dining outlets/restaurants as Kuromon but I donโt think it matters since 10 minutes walk from here there are plenty of restaurants nearby.
