This is a fun, energetic, pretty restaurant with really tasty and very affordable dining choices - and a great selection, including of vegetarian and meat-oriented options.
Pretty mid food not gonna lie.
Definitely won't be the best Mexican food you'll ever eat but it's a great casual restaurant. Service is great and for $6 per taco it's okay. You definitely won't be unhappy with the food and for a quick bite it's great. The pork could be more tender for sure but the watercress salad and tuna ceviche were a fantastic combo. Overall 8/10. Check it out!
Oyamel makes for an elevated experience.
The flavor and texture offered in the menu items are unlike any ordinary Mexican cuisine in the area. It is perfect for a light meal and/or sharing with friends. I visited during happy hour and wasn't disappointed by the items pricing. The mezcal margaritas don't taste too boozy but will definitely get you there. The atmosphere complements the experience with its chic decor and attentive service adding to the charm.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in DC by far.
The staff is super nice and patient with any questions you ask them. It is a little loud in the restaurant because it's usually packed. Every time I come back here, I always order the atun pacifico ceviche. It's made with a maggi-lime marinade and is super addicting (I would drink the sauce if I could). Highly recommend coming here and trying it. I also highly recommend getting a reservation if you're thinking about coming here. You can do it online through OpenTable!
Oyamel is hands down one of the best Mexican food
Oyamel is hands down one of the best Mexican food restaurants in DC. The guacamole is perfection, the drinks are amazing, and every dish hits the mark. It's no wonder the place is always packed - the vibrant atmosphere adds to the overall experience. Plus, being Bib Gourmand ranked speaks volumes about the quality you can expect. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Oyamel is a must-visit destination for a truly unforgettable dining experience.
Nice ambiance, cute outdoor eating area on the sidewalk.
Convenient location by the metro and quick service. Inside was a bit loud. Food was just okay though, not very flavorful. There were a variety of vegetarian options, but I thought the sweet potato black bean tamales was texturally boring and nothing exciting. The tortillas are a bit bland. Also it's tapas style so found it expensive for an underwhelming meal. Honestly would not go again.

My bf used to live in DC and frequent Oyamel, so when the Red line of the metro was experiencing major construction and the last stop from Union Station was Gallery Place/Chinatown, it was the perfect opportunity to walk the block down to Oyamel. We arrived around 1:30pm on the Friday before NYE and it was packed. Lots of little kids running around for some reason. The inside is very casual and decorated whimsically. We grabbed the last 2 seats at the bar. The bartender was very friendly, but you could tell he was very busy, so we didn't get that many check ins or water refills. The poor servers at this restaurant! They have to carry the food up stairs from the lower level (where the restrooms are located)! I'm not sure where the confusion came from, but on the day I was there, there were quite a few dishes that were almost given to the wrong people. We shared a couple plates and had a couple cocktails. Everything was very good. JosΓ© AndrΓ©s often has that salt foam margarita (called the Oyamel here) on the menu at his restaurants, and it's so good. The ceviche con citricos was amazing, and the pulpo negro was a close 2nd. I just wish the octopus was more tender.

We came for a work lunch on a weekday and overall had a great time. The food was delicious and solid portion sizes. Highly recommend trying a ceviche - we had the coctel costeno which was fantastic, we loved the peanut chile topping. Also, we had a delicious tamal rojo which had an amazing tender and moist texture. Agua Frescas were watered down and sugary - not a fan. A big fault of Oyamel is a trademark of a Jose Andres restaurant: mediocre service. Our server never asked how everything was, and I had to flag them down to get them to take our order after they passed us 3 or 4 times after taking our drink orders. I also got a little bit of attitude from the hostess when I asked "can i have a reservation for 2" instead of asking for "a table for 2." Overall a 4, leaning 3.5. Ambiance was casual colorful, not super high end. The food was yummy and appropriate pricing for portion and preparation, but the pricing doesn't fit the quality of service.
We returned to Oyamel yesterday after 5 years.
I don't have strong memories of my meal five years ago, but the meal we had yesterday was extraordinary! I was really impressed by the number of plant-based and plant-forward options (vegetarian and vegan). We tried five small plates and tacos - each one was a modern Mexican take on traditional ingredients and full of unique flavor. We tried the nopales salad, the "gazpacho," brussels sprouts, beans with cabbage, and mushroom tacos. They were all excellent. If you're looking for the standard (Tex-)Mex restaurant, this place isn't for you. But if you're looking for elevated Mexican cuisine that takes beautiful, local ingredients to a new level, Oyamel can deliver.
Service was good, but the fun colorful vibe and yummy food
Service was good, but the fun colorful vibe and yummy food really keeps Oyamel another JA specialty. A flavorful menu with varied options, we enjoyed the ceviche and roasted cauliflower as appetizers. I debated between tacos and something for filling but settled on a delicious grilled mole steak. Great flavor and texture without being too "chocolate-y". The dessert Cafe de Olla was a deconstructed dessert. Interesting flavors but I'd like to try something different next time. Worth a trek, and if you call, you might be able to get a last minute reservation with a short wait like we did.
Classic Jose Andres branded dining experience
Another solid Jose Andres experience in DC. Small plate selection is excellent, service was very good. Visited during Restaurant Week so there was a special selection which most at the table participated in and enjoyed very much. Something for everyone in a crowd which included vegetarians.
The place was jammed. No wonder, the food is excellent.
Jose Andres has another winner at this spot in downtown DC. Just like his others up the street there is something wrong with you if you are unable to find something to tickle your fancy. Started with drinks and a wonderful guacamole followed with small plates. There were two vegetarians with in the group and they had no problem finding suitable choices. My wife was anxious to sample Chapulines, the legendary Oaxacan specialty of sautΓ©ed grasshoppers, and they did not have it. I recall drinking Michelada on a trip to Mexico in another life and alas, it was not available eiher. Dessert was good as well!
Fun festive and delicious
Enjoyed a margarita w chips and salsa. Then we shared a quesadilla and a few tacos. The fish taco was a favorite but pork good as well. Of course carne asada always meets the mark. Fun butterfly motif and attentive waitress. A fun experience and weβll be back.
Great! Delicious Mexican dishes!
Visited here with a few friends for lunch during DC's Winter Restaurant Week. We had made a reservation in advance, and I recommend doing this; the place was packed. Service was prompt and attentive. Staff courteous. I ordered a few different tacos while others in my party ordered the restaurant week set menu. Everyone enjoyed their food. Nice twists to typical Mexican-style dishes, as well as some dishes not common in your standard Mexican restaurants. I loved the chips - thick, crunchy, flavorful. Even better was the handmade guacamole, made there on site. DELICIOUS. Recommended for sure!
Attentive bar service inside a vibrant, hip space.
Good service, affordable happy hour prices. Vibrant atmosphere inside. Bar gets busy past 5:30, and bar space is limited for larger groups. Recommend bar seating for smaller groups looking for attentive bartending service.
Excellent service and food ok
We choice the tasting menu but I was disappointed because is more like sharing big plates of food some good like the appetizers but main course more on the heavy preparation and blend the dessert was good and the service one of the best in the city
Margaritas and party scene!
First time here on a Monday evening. Wow!! Dining partner had been drinking and partied here in the past as part of an encounter. Really busy. Very trendy, loud and pretty young crowd. Absolutely not a place for a business meal. Margaritas seemed to be the primary reason folks were here. Eating clearly took a back seat to the drinking and partying (and general hook up) scene. Server was friendly and helpful. Had a reservation, but ended up with a pretty bad table. Very loud. Guacamole was excellent. Fresh and made to order. Margaritas were good, too. Small plates; some were good, some just okay. Some too hot spice for my tastes. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. No problem there at all,in case you actually want to eat here and not just drink (we did). Could easily take a vegan here for dinner. For sure part of a very trendy scene here! Skipped dessert and got amazing ice cream and sorbet 2 doors down.
Good food, bad service
Great food, bad service. Could give them the benefit of the doubt because we were seated right before a very large, very high maintenance party that monopolized our server. Werenβt offered get any drink refills or second rounds, forgot one of our courses and had to be reminded. Made a reservation and still had to wait a while.
Very solid meal
I enjoyed this spot. Good margaritas, excellent fresh made guac, and a nice menu with interesting choices. We enjoyed everything we ate here
Definitely recommend
We had time to kill in the rain before the theater around the block.what a find! Amazing octopus, cervice, and mojitos with foam salt..just a blast. We ended up coming back after the show and sat at the high tables because it was packed (at 4:30pm). We got scallops, tequila cocktails (so creative), and the Mexican national dish of a stuffed pepper, just fabulous. Not cheap, around $200 for all of it, but definitely recommend.

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
