This is a fun, energetic, pretty restaurant with really tasty and very affordable dining choices - and a great selection, including of vegetarian and meat-oriented options.
Be the first to ReplyPretty mid food not gonna lie.
Definitely won't be the best Mexican food you'll ever eat but it's a great casual restaurant. Service is great and for $6 per taco it's okay. You definitely won't be unhappy with the food and for a quick bite it's great. The pork could be more tender for sure but the watercress salad and tuna ceviche were a fantastic combo. Overall 8/10. Check it out!
Be the first to ReplyOyamel makes for an elevated experience.
The flavor and texture offered in the menu items are unlike any ordinary Mexican cuisine in the area. It is perfect for a light meal and/or sharing with friends. I visited during happy hour and wasn't disappointed by the items pricing. The mezcal margaritas don't taste too boozy but will definitely get you there. The atmosphere complements the experience with its chic decor and attentive service adding to the charm.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my favorite restaurants in DC by far.
The staff is super nice and patient with any questions you ask them. It is a little loud in the restaurant because it's usually packed. Every time I come back here, I always order the atun pacifico ceviche. It's made with a maggi-lime marinade and is super addicting (I would drink the sauce if I could). Highly recommend coming here and trying it. I also highly recommend getting a reservation if you're thinking about coming here. You can do it online through OpenTable!
Be the first to ReplyNice ambiance, cute outdoor eating area on the sidewalk.
Convenient location by the metro and quick service. Inside was a bit loud. Food was just okay though, not very flavorful. There were a variety of vegetarian options, but I thought the sweet potato black bean tamales was texturally boring and nothing exciting. The tortillas are a bit bland. Also it's tapas style so found it expensive for an underwhelming meal. Honestly would not go again.
Be the first to ReplyOyamel is hands down one of the best Mexican food
Oyamel is hands down one of the best Mexican food restaurants in DC. The guacamole is perfection, the drinks are amazing, and every dish hits the mark. It's no wonder the place is always packed - the vibrant atmosphere adds to the overall experience. Plus, being Bib Gourmand ranked speaks volumes about the quality you can expect. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Oyamel is a must-visit destination for a truly unforgettable dining experience.

My bf used to live in DC and frequent Oyamel, so when the Red line of the metro was experiencing major construction and the last stop from Union Station was Gallery Place/Chinatown, it was the perfect opportunity to walk the block down to Oyamel. We arrived around 1:30pm on the Friday before NYE and it was packed. Lots of little kids running around for some reason. The inside is very casual and decorated whimsically. We grabbed the last 2 seats at the bar. The bartender was very friendly, but you could tell he was very busy, so we didn't get that many check ins or water refills. The poor servers at this restaurant! They have to carry the food up stairs from the lower level (where the restrooms are located)! I'm not sure where the confusion came from, but on the day I was there, there were quite a few dishes that were almost given to the wrong people. We shared a couple plates and had a couple cocktails. Everything was very good. Josรฉ Andrรฉs often has that salt foam margarita (called the Oyamel here) on the menu at his restaurants, and it's so good. The ceviche con citricos was amazing, and the pulpo negro was a close 2nd. I just wish the octopus was more tender.

We came for a work lunch on a weekday and overall had a great time. The food was delicious and solid portion sizes. Highly recommend trying a ceviche - we had the coctel costeno which was fantastic, we loved the peanut chile topping. Also, we had a delicious tamal rojo which had an amazing tender and moist texture. Agua Frescas were watered down and sugary - not a fan. A big fault of Oyamel is a trademark of a Jose Andres restaurant: mediocre service. Our server never asked how everything was, and I had to flag them down to get them to take our order after they passed us 3 or 4 times after taking our drink orders. I also got a little bit of attitude from the hostess when I asked "can i have a reservation for 2" instead of asking for "a table for 2." Overall a 4, leaning 3.5. Ambiance was casual colorful, not super high end. The food was yummy and appropriate pricing for portion and preparation, but the pricing doesn't fit the quality of service.
Be the first to ReplyWe returned to Oyamel yesterday after 5 years.
I don't have strong memories of my meal five years ago, but the meal we had yesterday was extraordinary! I was really impressed by the number of plant-based and plant-forward options (vegetarian and vegan). We tried five small plates and tacos - each one was a modern Mexican take on traditional ingredients and full of unique flavor. We tried the nopales salad, the "gazpacho," brussels sprouts, beans with cabbage, and mushroom tacos. They were all excellent. If you're looking for the standard (Tex-)Mex restaurant, this place isn't for you. But if you're looking for elevated Mexican cuisine that takes beautiful, local ingredients to a new level, Oyamel can deliver.

Service was good, but the fun colorful vibe and yummy food really keeps Oyamel another JA specialty. A flavorful menu with varied options, we enjoyed the ceviche and roasted cauliflower as appetizers. I debated between tacos and something for filling but settled on a delicious grilled mole steak. Great flavor and texture without being too "chocolate-y". The dessert Cafe de Olla was a deconstructed dessert. Interesting flavors but I'd like to try something different next time. Worth a trek, and if you call, you might be able to get a last minute reservation with a short wait like we did.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was amazing.
The staff was very kind and helpful. They have a super extensive tequila and mezcal menu with lots of info on all the choices. I really enjoyed the tequila flights. I have several dietary restrictions and was able to find lots of items that I could eat. My server was able to direct me toward everything that was safe for me to eat.

My wife and I have patronized Oyamel almost since its beginning. We are also big fans of the work the owner Josรฉ Andrรฉs does with World Central Kitchen, and have contributed donations to it. So what we experienced last night was quite disappointing. Service - Our server was slow, and did not check back on us. Wait staff repeatedly tried to remove items from our table without asking if we were finished. We came down because of the promotion for a mezcal/drinks and special menu I received in the emails I subscribe to from Oyamel. Yet our waiter knew nothing about it, did not provide us with said promotional menus, and we had to ask for a manager to find out what was being offered (if at all). Note that this was the next to the last day of said "special" menu -my point being that you would think the staff knew about it from the past week and a half that it had been running. And FWIW, said "specials" weren't anything special. Food - This was by far the biggest disappointment. We have wondered the last few times if we were imagining a decline in Oyamel's food standards the last year or two. Last night confirmed that beyond doubt. Nothing was 'bad,' per se. But for what we paid, we would much rather patronize one of the many alternatives in DC (e.g., Espita). The cocktails were unbalanced and I would swear they're using a sour mix instead of fresh lime juice. Also too much ice -the drinks provided about three sips before being gone. Guac was not at all spicy as we requested, and when you walk in you see a bunch of it already prepared and sitting in a row on a cart - IOW, it's not prepared just before we order it. Chips and salsa were still very good, though it was hard to get a refill on the salsa. The shrimp special I ordered was alright, but nothing noteworthy or particularly flavorful. The same for my wife's chicken enchiladas and the tacos we shared. The chicken taco I ordered had a lot of refried beans at the bottom of the tortilla, which was not at all the right flavor. The tortillas had almost no corn flavor and were very 'cardboard-like.' The special lime/mezcal-sorbet dessert was covered in some gelatinous stuff that was supposed to be mango-something, but mainly served to hide the small amount of sorbet underneath (which was very good, what there was of it) and was on top of weird chunks of jicama and cucumber, which wasn't complementary of the rest of the dessert. Lastly, many of our former favorite menu items (that still appear on their website) are apparently no longer offered. We know Oyamel gets a ton of tourist walk-ins, so no matter how much they slip they'll probably be fine. But we're locals, and know better. I doubt we'll be back - there are simply too many other places to go for a better experience. We'll continue to support the fine work Andrรฉs does, just through donations rather than by dining at Oyamel.
Be the first to ReplyWe just happened to stop by it and stopped to eat.
Service was very quick, server was very helpful, even accommodating plates for our kids. I had the Caldo Tlalpeno and husband had the chilaquiles. Kids had quesadillas. All of them were delicious!!! Chips had delicious seasoning. Ambience was beautiful and very lively. Highly recommend to give this place a try!
Be the first to ReplyWords cannot even describe how amazing the food, ambiance
Words cannot even describe how amazing the food, ambiance and service was! Our server Daniel was just absolutely amazing. I say this because I have allergies to nuts and of course I clearly did not properly read the menu but Daniel paid close attention to my tables need. Any item that included nuts, he clarified and made sure to not put the dishes in front of me. I must say I was extremely impressed because it shows that he paid attention to allergies! The manager Fernando had stop by the table and was just as amazing. He asked us how our meal was and we had to compliment Daniel on his amazing service. Without any hesitation, I would for sure recommend this restaurant and ask for Daniel, I promise you will not be disappointed!
Be the first to ReplyI would not recommend this restaurant for a large group.
They require you to select a fixed menu, which would be fine except that they don't give you enough food. I hosted a lunch for 11 people at the Butterfly Table. They charged $40 per person, plus an extra $5 for the guacamole appetizer that we added. But they brought only 3 small to medium sized plates per dish. For example, they gave us 6 individual-sized desserts to split among 11 people. We were not full when we left. Too bad, as the table is nice, the food is good, and the staff is pleasant.

The food was good but only one thing we ordered sort of wow'd us. For the price point, I would expect everything coming out of the kitchen to be absolutely exceptional. The service was super lovely and the inside of the restaurant is fun and inviting. Again I would give it a much higher rating if we had not spent almost a hundred dollars for a snack sized meal for two that did not completely wow us. I can't remember the desert we ordered but that was definitely delicious.

This is definitely a place which knows its tequila and what to do with limes. I expect nothing less, really, but the ceviche was perhaps even more magical that the delightful oyamel margarita with its salt foam. For the less decisive drinkers, the tequila flights are a pleasant spread for the palate, and a bit of an adventure for anyone with a narrower bar shelf at home. Pulled pork tacos and cauliflower got the same careful attention for flavor and texture, both good enough to lick the plate and your fingers. Even dessert was a lovely thing to dig into with my spoon, tart passion fruit and dark chocolate pairing smoothly with the slightly salty cookie crunch, smoothed out with the last of my tequila. The only miss, the first I believe for any restaurant I've gone to by the powerhouse that is Josรฉ Andrรฉs, was the chapulines tacos. It isn't that I dislike crickets, it's that they were almost inedibly salty and instead of being fried crispy, they were just soft enough the legs didn't chew well. Honestly, quite the disappointment, there aren't many places to get good insects. I'd hoped for better. Will I go back? Absolutely. I want to try the whole menu. Twice. Good food, good drinks, lovely staff, and playful decor. It's a bright, delicious space, and next time, I'm getting the guac. It looks too good to skip twice.
Be the first to ReplyThe food and drinks were good, loved them.
However, the server was not super friendly, which was not a big deal until it came to the bill. My girlfriend and I went during happy hour which on the front page of the website mentioned nothing about it only being at the bar. When the bill came and we asked about the pricing, our server rudely told us we should have asked him and then hastily gave us the happy hour price on just our drinks, not the food. I (a socially anxious and non-confrontational 21 year old) politely told the host that in the future they should inform the guests that happy hour only applies to bar patrons (or at least edit the website) when they preceded to argue with us and gestured us to move aside for the guests walking in. Again, the food and drinks were sadly delicious, I'm just extremely disappointed that a restaurant with such a highly regarded chef would be so rude when receiving constructive and polite negative feedback. Our server was Daniel, Im not sure who the hosts were.
Be the first to ReplyOyamel is my least favorite Jose Andres restaurant, I'll
Oyamel is my least favorite Jose Andres restaurant, I'll explain why. Food: This was a miss for me. The ceviche I ordered felt "deconstructed". Ceviche for me should be homogenous, every bite filled with an explosion of flavors. At Oyamel, you're eating a piece of fish here, and a grapefruit slice there. The steak lacked favor and was impossible to chew for how thinly sliced it was. The enchiladas were okay, the chicken was quite dry. And not pictured, the pumpkin dip had a texture like dog food. For much each plate is charged, it's an absolute abomination. Ambiance: This feels like a typical Jose Andres restaurant with its decor, colors, and lights. This is a redeeming quality, it feels fun to be here. Expect this place to be packed on a weekday evening. Would I come back? Probably not. I'd much rather go to Jaleo or China Chilcano.

The Obama's introduced us to Oyamel when their girls were in school in DC. It was a great family place to dine during the Obama years and it is still divine. Start with a perfectly crafted margarita, then move on to guacamole made to order at your table, add Ceviche, and finish with spectacular tacos. Great meal. Great atmosphere.

One of the better JA restaurants in my opinion! The Lengua tacos were to die for and the dessert options were very unique!! I hope to come back soon to try out even more of their menu. The service was top notch and everyone very helpful when asking questions regarding the menu and substitutions.
Be the first to ReplyOyamel is conveniently located a few minutes from the metro.
The restaurant had some outdoor seating which would be nice if it was too humid out. Staff was very friendly and attentive, however, food was a huge let down! Chips and salsa were ok. Guacamole felt like it was missing some ingredients and flavor wasn't there. The tapas themselves were pricey and portions were small. Honestly, the only dish I'd recommend is the ceviche which was light and delicious. Okra was fried but not crispy, sauce was bland. Watermelon salad was decent. The rice and tamale had good flavor. Fish taco I would def not recommend, no crunch in the fish so it was a bit soggy and lacked flavor. The skirt steak was tough the chew. The shrimp was flavorful but was small. Would not come here again if I wanted to get tapas as there are so many other great options for food in this area.
