Good food, shame about the service.
We went here as a treat as we had been to other restaurants in the group. The food was lovely, we both really enjoyed it. But unfortunately the service was terrible. We were given dessert menus, and no one came back for 40/ 50 minutes, so we then decided not to have one at risk of waiting longer with no drinks also. So we decided to get the bill, but no one came back with the bill, so I went up to the bar as I was fed up waiting. It's such a shame.

Rude dismissive staff, just like the dunwich ship chestnut group staff only interested in you if they assume you earn over £100k a year. Ordered two bowls of chips which were under cooked and inedible. No staff around to clear plates or would have asked for money back. Definitely would not return.

Stayed here for 3 nights, great room, clean & warm, loved the bar area & Very pleasant, attentive staff, but to be fair, it was the food that really wowed us. Truly outstanding 3days break, Thankyou

This was our 3rd time at this small chain of inns / hotels but the first at the Packhorse Inn. Overall, this is a lovely place to stay, with very comfortable rooms, very good food and attentive and friendly staff. Unfortunately, our stay was marred by an aggressive local who had been drinking for several hours in the bar. He took a dislike to us for some reason which meant we had to leave the bar and stay in our room for a few hours until dinner to avoid further confrontation.
Be the first to ReplySimply excellent - Thanks!
An outstanding lunch for a table of twelve. I am lucky enough to dine at some excellent restaurants, but rarely come away so totally satisfied with a meal; especially given the value. The chef and kitchen team deserve a massive thumbs up. It took significant self-control not to order another chocolate brownie & popcorn dessert… The service and setting was friendly, welcoming and comfortable. What a great place. It’s a long time since I left a TA review, but felt this deserved a few minutes of my time by way of a thank you.
Be the first to ReplyVery enjoyable meal
3 good courses that both my husband and I enjoyed. Best part was the delightful deserts. Finished of a lovely meal. We had a £31 bottle of red wine, which we both liked.

This was my second visit this time in a group of six good friends. The company , atmosphere and the service were excellent. The drinks and especially the Pinot Noir (503) were all very good. The food was all well presented however I felt it was a case of style over substance. The trout lacked flavour as did the dressings and flavoured oil. The Sirloin Steak at £31 was very poor in quality . Flavour was good however the meat was very tough and someone felt the need to slice it before serving. Chips were good as was the salad. The dessert, clementine bread and butter pudding had more flavour and was well presented but was a very poor portion. Flavour was good but pudding was a little soggy. I enjoyed the custard and cinnamon ice cream. A little more attention with the cooking of the meat and care with flavourings would really have elevated my opinion. I will certainly return as the promise is there

We just called in & after looking at menu decided to eat instead of going back to our hotel 3 miles away. Ambiance… Very relaxed Staff … Attentive & warm to talk with Food. WOWWWW. A fabulous meal, only one course, as we’ve reached a stage in life when you really can’t push it. Big thanks to excellent staff all round. Thankyou Alan & Bev

Visited on a cold and wet Sunday afternoon just for drinks and nibbles on this ocassion in the bar area late afternoon to find it well supported. There was a lovely log fire burning with a choice of comfortable chairs or bar stools at the bar. The staff were friendly and helpful and we were made to feel very welcome. They now open all afternoon for main meals too.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Sunday lunch
Probably one of the best Sunday lunches we have had. Excellent service, fantastic choice of food and a cracking wine list. Was busy so make sure you book ahead. We had the gazpacho and whipped goats cheese beet salad. Both were delicious. For mains we had roast pork and the courgette and tomato tart. All washed down with the lovely appalls and a glass of very nice Essex sparkling rose. Will definitely return here

Sunday roast today , did not disappoint! Service friendly and food fantastic as always. Service was very quick , but not to the extent to make it feel rushed.
Be the first to ReplyTour of chestnut group pubs : Trip 2 The Packhorse Moulton
So having reviewed The 3 BlackBirds we are on a tour of all the pubs in this group (currently 15) . Each time we go with a couple we have known for years to meet for a meal. So this pub was far better than the first. Excellent service, no long waits neither were we rushed. As always beautiful decor and well kept up. Immediately feels like a special place to eat. We all chose a roast and our big test as always are we allowed extra gravy! It was no problem and a large jug arrived. The vegetables and Yorkshires amazing. Only slight criticism would be the pork was wafer thin and looked like pale bacon though obviously not. We just felt it should have been thicker. The roasts not super crispy but overall a far better roast than its sister The 3 Blackbirds. Dessert was delicious and they happily accommodated one of us only wanting a scoop of sorbet. Definitely no improvements needed here. We felt good value for the money. So current league 1. The Packhorse 2. The 3 Blackbirds Off to Bury St Edmonds next …..
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Service, Care and attention
We went for dinner for a post pandemic reunion with our close friends from Spain on Friday. The food, wine and beer were fabulous and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. We'd like to thank Rob in particular for his care, attention and patience with my elderly mum. He went above and beyond to accommodate her needs. Thanks to the chefs and kitchen staff who also played their part. The service was exceptional all round. Thank you all again and we hope to visit again soon.
Be the first to ReplyGood Sunday Lunch
This was a very good Sunday lunch with great service. The beets salad with creamed goats cheese was a nice twist and highly recommended. The beef was tender and the Yorkshire pudding nicely cooked. The decor was lovely, just right for a country pub. The rooms looked nice too.
Be the first to ReplyDate Night Dinner
We decided to treat ourselves to dinner at the Packhorse- our local. I was less than impressed with the speed of the cocktail ordering – the starters arrived before the cocktails! And- they tasted as if they came from a mix . I wondered whether the delay was due to general chaos! Luckily we had a wonderful waitress – Ella – who was really helpful and very professional. She took our orders and made sure that they arrived in a timely fashion. The busyness and popularity of the Packhorse often means that the dishes are inevitably delayed- however even by their standards things seem to slip slightly that evening. Our food was delicious but arrived in a rather random set of intervals. Also because we were seated in a room off the main area, we felt as if perhaps we were slightly ignored. The manager who was on duty that evening was very helpful and responded immediately to our concerns. Big up to Ella and the manager that evening. The food is so good one can forgive the odd bumps in the service.
Be the first to ReplyVery good food
This is an upmarket restaurant so food is very good but perhaps a bit more expensive. There is a "market" menu which offers 3 courses for £22 and I chose this, which although gives smaller portions was very nice.
Be the first to ReplyGood lunch.
Attractive pub in an attractive village. Good service. Friendly. Food good and reasonably priced. Eg bream dish, Suffolk chicken - £22.pork belly £23. Vegetarian option available. Unfortunately the Norfolk Wherry was “off” but quickly replaced with Adams IPA. Probably very good rather than excellent. Well worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful venue On a dull day.
Visited this week, met friends for lunch. Location fabulous and the pub itself really quaint but modern, love it. Have been before and this time did not disappoint. Had a great table so we could see out of the window. Ordered drinks, and my Husbands real ale, was cloudy, no head and tasted like the end of a barrel. Called waiter over, and appeared to be a discussion about it, but the Manager came over and said he was then going to change barrel. Felt this should not have been served if he knew the barrel was empty not at this standard of place. Food arrived, but our rosemary and Parmesan chips did not arrive until we more than half way through our meal and only after we asked for them. But positive, food was excellent, all meals melted in our mouth. Desserts to die for. Yes we would return.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed, foods been much better.
This is my 3rd visit and I was disappointed. The service was good, but the food was lazy, bland and lacked wow factor. I feel this venue has rested on laurels and is treading water. The price is fair if the food is up to standard, but it wasn’t. I had a starter that was too big and tasteless. The main had extra unnecessary components. Not everything needs pickled something on, regardless of fashion.

We had not visited for some time but happy to report that our return visit was very enjoyable as always. The staff were so friendly and helpful with attentive service all evening. The menu is finedining and the food was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent dinning experience
We went on New year's Day a family meal for 6
We had a great time very good food and excellent service we spent a lovely 3 Hours
In great surroundings
Definitely go back after we have tried some more of the group
You would expect better behaviour at an old firm match
.L have chosen to contact the owner direct. The staff were lovely the food ok, service good The behaviour of some of the regular clientele not acceptable.
Be the first to ReplyFestive menu - overpriced and a little underwhelming
Considering the hoops that you have to jump through to book the festive menu (not as simple as clicking ‘Book a Table’ on the website), we had high hopes for a Sunday festive lunch. I’m afraid it was disappointing. The food was ok but for £37pp, they could have stretched to a cracker on the table, or coffee and a mince pie at the end. Not much effort at all. Not true of all Chestnut Group pubs - I had a much better festive menu at The Three Blackbirds earlier in the week. Cheaper and cracker, coffee and mini mince pie were included. Little things make the difference.
Be the first to ReplyA pleasant lunch.....
This was our second visit to The Packhorse. The first visit had I done a review I would have given a ‘5’ rating.
The food, today, was very good, although my chicken dish was a little bland. We were given our starter and yet nobody had taken our wine order so had to request that.
Indeed,it was a pleasant lunch.
Personally,I would have been happier if the staff had been wearing masks.
