Airplane food in economy class
None of us finished our dinners. Truly unacceptable. Tasted like a bad airplane meal served in economy on a transatlantic flight. My sole was dry (way too thick to be sole), over-breaded, fishy-tasting. Service was friendly and competent. But that's not enough when they serve what was probably the worst meal I've had in recent memory.

Menu and decor were very promising. But every single dish we ate was quasi inedible. Not sure how one can pretend to be a Bistro when the level of food served is so unacceptable. Have the owners actually eaten real French food before? No French owner would serve this kind of food in their Bistro-they would be too embarrassed.
Time for a major change in the kitchen.
Negative Stars less than zero
Our Turkish waiter and the other staff member we encountered were most gracious and very attentive.
The rest of this experience was terrible. The food quality, preparation, presentation, flavor and value were beyond bad. The menu reads like a classic French restaurant but the food was not even in the ball park. The sauces were awful, watery, and flavorless. One of our plates featured the saddest, worst presentation of Magret du Canard (Duck Breast) I have ever seen. The sauce was like a mucus. The mashed potatoes had to be from a box. The entire meal was similar quality. My companion and I both have a lot of experience with French cuisine, having lived in FR., and are trained cooks as well, and this place is one of the worst restaurants claiming French cuisine that either of us have ever seen. That this place receives the number of stars in the quality rating that it does is a reflection of consumers who frankly have no knowledge of what the cuisine should be. Maybe it's possible to find a worse French restaurant in the region, but I doubt it. Surely this place is on it's way out of business. Caveat Emptor!
Cozy place for an evening out
Had a nice dinner with friends at this small eatery serving french style food-not sure if it was authentic French.. The food was tasty and portions large. two people shared a goat salad and with the main course it ended up being a little too much food. They have a small list of French wines
Be the first to ReplyQuality has taken a dive
Quality has taken a dive since new ownership. I had lunch here yesterday with a friend. We both had steak sandwiches. The bread supplied prior to the main course and the bread for the sandwiches was little better than Wonderbread. When we said something to the server, his response was: โItโs hard to get good bread.โ This in an area where there are any number of good bakeries such as Acme. In addition the steak was gristly. Itโs disappointing because it was such a great place in the past.

Had a prix fixe New Year's Eve dinner last night at Pastis - delicious food and terrific service!! Will go back often!

The restaurant was a little quiet but we were a little late (9.00pm) by Palo Alto standards. But told we had to order promptly as last orders were 9.15PM! That seemed early even for Palo Alto. Nevertheless we got our orders in but were really astonished to get a mixed medley of vegetables (carrots, broccoli etc) that were obviously frozen and not fresh. Totally unacceptable and whilst the staff were friendly there is no excuse for a proper restaurant to use frozen vegetables. We are unlikely to go back!

The wine I ordered was very good But initially when ordered, the waiter had no idea about what I was requesting, Another waiter came over and made clarifications.
I ordered a duck salad. The duck was okay but not succulent; Almost like it was leftover from the day before. It was served on a very uninteresting bed of spinach, which was overly drenched in olive oil. This made for an oily tasteless "dressing."
My tablemate ordered a salad variation, which, too, has overly oily and overly drenched.
The setting is very nice, but I definitely won't be returning.
Atmosphere is French, but food is below average
Pastis tries to put on a "French air" but leaves much to be desired in the taste of the food. We had brunch there recently and the potatoes that come with each omelette are totally bland and tasteless; thankfully there was ketchup on the table. On the good side: the service is efficient, the price is reasonable and the coffee is good.
Be the first to ReplyGood but small
I had coq a vin at Pastis too night. Iโve been a customer since this place opened many years age. I know it has changed ownership and this is my second visit under the new direction. The food was tasty and well prepared but the portion was inadequate. When you are charging Palo Alto prices a dish that is chicken in a wine sauce should provide more than just a small thigh piece. At a minimum two thigh pieces or even a leg plus a thigh would be minimally adequate. The Apple tart was an adequate and well prepared desert.o I have been to France many times and am aware nouvelle cuisine often provided small portions. Pastis isnโt s a nouvelle cuisine restaurant and should provide adequate value for money.

our foursome had brunch here recently. other area restaurants had a half-hour wait, and we elected to give Pastis a try. While I don't know for sure, the difference may be a handful of things that Pastis could do better. Our omelets were fine, and we didnt have a long wait for our orders (well, the restaurant was less than half-full while the competitors were overflowing). But nobody ever offered to refill our coffee, and the omelets were served with a single pat of butter and a single serving of jam that both looked palry - just the wrong "style" for this sort of meal. It's odd, but that's all that we found wrong - and maybe all it would take for me to give 4 rather than 3 stars.
