Went to the last open seating of Pearls Oyster bar.
Bittersweet for several reasons. This place rates as my favorite lobster roll in NYC. I started coming here over 15 years ago. I tried other places but very few came close. To boot, I was late for a party so could only slam down 1 lobster roll before bouncing out for the last time (I will miss you blueberry pie a la mode!). When everything on Cornelia street changed, Pearls had been the last bastion on the block. Now even that's gone now. This pandemic done killed way too many NYC restaurants, it's so hard to recover.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant, privately owned gem of a restaurant.
The latest victim of Tammany Hall politics in New York who only pay lip service to "concern for small businesses". NYC is being sold to the highest bidder and the mayor is lining his pockets as our neighborhoods are sold off to Corporate interests

Pearl is closing in a week, and I'm reviewing late -- mainly out of guilt that I didn't do it sooner. Maybe I could have saved it. One of my favorite places in NYC. What a crime that places as good and consistent as this one can't make a go of it in post-Bloomberg NYC. I don't want to think of New York without Pearl Oyster Bar. I'll miss you!

So we came here as a belated birthday dinner for myself and to catch up a week or so ago. From start to finish this little restaurant is just perfection. They don't take reservations and they're on the small side, hidden away in the west village. So be mindful of that. We started with a glass of orange wine. It was on the menu and reasonably priced and I never order orange wine. So when in Rome. It was quite tasty and refreshing and complimented the seafood well. With the weather getting chilly outside we both ordered the Bouillabaisse. And we started with a half dozen oysters. Very fresh oysters. I'm not a huge oyster fan because too many for some weird reason do a number on my stomach. But 3-4 generally is the ideal amount. These were perfection. The bouillabaisse is an absolute show stopper. It's warm and comforting on a cold day but also comes with an insane amount of seafood. I had no idea. This might be shareable. In trying to remember everything: more mussels than you can count, two scallops, two jumbo shrimp, a freaking lobster tail, an enormous piece of fried cod or haddock on top and crunchy bread to dip inside smeared with some kind of glorious fragrant butter. I'm just dreaming about this dish still. It's probably not normal to save seafood for the next day but I still did anyway and still enjoyed it for lunch. Lol. Topped it off with a slice of blueberry crumble pie with vanilla ice cream and I couldn't think of or imagine a more perfect meal. This isn't something to sleep on. I highly recommend coming here for any special occasion or even just sitting up at the bar and having a beverage and maybe an appetizer. Definitely want to come back to try their lobster rolls someday. My friend said that they seriously load it with like close to a pound of lobster and I believe him after seeing how insane the bouillabaisse dish is prepared.

At Pearl Oyster Bar every element in every category is perfect, not an iota too many (or too few) of anything. Each ingredient is in perfect balance...Every element of every dish...Not a grain too many or a crumb too few--of a spice, of a steamer, or of a shoestring fry. The lobster roll is perfect, and even the marvelous, thick ketchup is notable and in perfect balance...And as for the space and service: Again, every element is perfect...The service is stellar, not a word too many or too few; not obsequious, but always there at the right time. The tables--as they should be--are perfectly clean and spare, not one decorative piece (if any) too many. The fact that Pearl has consistently maintained this level of perfection (on every level) year after year, without getting complacent or sloppy, is reason enough for praise.

I've been coming for over 15 years after Tom Colicchio suggested it. Came back a couple months for the first time in nearly 4 years and it still held up to the previous standards. Always great.

The only lobster / oyster / mussels restaurant left since Mary's halved the size and doubled the prices. All the menu is great, some of it sublime. Great bread, good beer, fair prices.

This place is da bomb! We got here early to ensure getting a table and of course there were others with the same train of thought. After about a 10 minute wait, we were seated. The food did not disappoint! It was so delish, this place pops up in my dreams!

First return since the pandemic began and we truly missed this place. Love their menu and the fact that they cook each piece of seafood perfectly. Food quality is still amazing and service is warm and friendly. As always, just wish there's more space on our tiny table.

The seafood here is so good that we didn't even mind that they sat us next to a garbage can the 1st time. We loved it so much that we came here 3 times in the last 3 months, and they already remembered us. It's a very small operation and you have a great view into the kitchen if you sit at the bar. I'm not a seafood expert but I grew up in the Northeast and I used to go fishing with my dad, and the seafood is as fresh as the seafood we used to catch and find around Montauk. We loved the oysters, the lobster roll, and the bouillabaisse. The staff is very friendly and on point. Prices were fair for the size of the dishes. What a treat!

Oh wow! Fresh oysters, beautiful fresh pompano, perfectly grilled veggies, the best lobster roll (hold the bun & add salad) and refreshing champagne. Can't say enough about this place. Can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyCame here for dinner with a friend mid-week and this place
Came here for dinner with a friend mid-week and this place has been on my list for awhile for lobster rolls. It didn't disappoint. Get here early to avoid the wait as they do not take reservations. Make sure to bring ID and proof of Covid vaccination. Was the first one here for dinner so got to select whichever seat we wanted - either at the bar, inside dining or outside dining. Chose to sit inside. Decor was nice, service was good and friendly staff. My friend was surprised it wasn't as crowded as it normally is...perhaps because we were there at 5:45pm for dinner but it started filling up more as we left but still no wait for a table (which is rare).Beside the regular menu, there are specials to check out as well. Soups: Had the lobster bisque seasonal special - it was ok, had a burnt taste to it. New England Clam chowder - is the staple here and good especially with the oyster crackers. Clam chowder is what I had planned on originally. Stick with the plan. Two orders of the lobster roll please - it was delicious and served with shoe string fries and perfectly salted. If you like mayo, this is the lobster roll for you. Nicely done! Was too full for dessert but next time. Will be back again soon!

Sweet lobster and the bread is delicious. I also love the shoestring fries. I love this place.
Be the first to ReplyThe original, always good, I recall when these were $12z.
At $37, it's the going price countrywide. There's actually a Lobster shortage in the US.
Be the first to ReplyI can't believe I reviewed this place on Yelp nine years
I can't believe I reviewed this place on Yelp nine years ago, I thought surely it's been our favorite seafood restaurant for at least 10 years! Pearl Oyster Bar is beloved in the West Village and if it was located closer to us (uptown) we would be here every weekend. It's located on Cornelia St, long before Taylor Swift rented (and moved out of) the renovated carriage house across the street, before she wrote a song about this very charming street between Bleecker and 6th Ave. Pearl Oyster Bar serves THE BEST lobster rolls in the city, maybe even the state. You get a generous 3/4 to a pound of lobster chunks (tail and claws) lightly dressed in mayonnaise on a toasted, buttered brioche (or if you're from Hawaii it tastes like Kings Hawaiian sweet bread rolls). Served alongside the lobster roll is a huge mound of stick thin crispy, crunchy golden shoestring fries. You cannot get this perfectly paired combination anywhere else in the city or state and we've searched and sampled, believe me. A lot of lobster rolls were devoured in the search process. We also introduced all of our visiting family members to Pearl's large pail of steamers - juicy clams that we've become adept at peeling off their skin at the top, swishing off sand in the cup of warm lemon parsley water, dunking in melted butter and popping in our mouth. Their Prince Edward mussels are the plumpest we've ever eaten. My husband also insists on always ordering their fried oysters. For a large pail of steamers, a huge bowl of mussels, a plate of fried oysters, one lobster roll and a glass of pinot gris, it's a great value, the bill was only $112, what a bargain for an amazing meal! The service is always genuinely kind and very knowledgeable. We've brought all our friends and family to Pearl over the last 9 years except my mother-in-law. We tried to bring her over for lunch one Saturday pre-Covid - rented a car, picked her from Queens, drove her across the 59th St bridge to downtown and catastrophe, Pearl was unexpectedly closed! But now that they've assured us that they are open for lunch on Saturdays, we'll definitely be back for our favorite lobster roll and trimmings very soon!

My brother and sister in law suggested dinner here before I head of town last this week. It's been years since my last time on Cornelia Street and I was sad to see Pearl Oyster Bar the only remaining establishment I remember from my early days. This is also my brother's favorite restaurant and he only gets the lobster roll. He was hesitant to come here because of my lobster allergy. I assured him and SIL that it would be fine. We started off with a dozen oysters. There were two types and both were fresh & tasty. One was west coast and meatier. the other an east coast briny! They both went with the lobster roll and the shoestring fries. I went with the fillet of the day and chose the snapper. It was prepared perfected in a burre blanc type sauce with kale and root vegetables. We ended our lovely meal with their toffee crunch sundae.

Cute place! I have been here a few times over the past few years. As someone who grew up visiting Kennebunkport, Maine I especially loved all the pictures of the town. The food was fantastic! We split a dozen east coast oysters from Massachusetts which were plump, fresh, and well shucked. We also ordered the fried oyster appetizer which I would highly recommend. For entrees I got the boiled lobster and my partner got the skate filet with vegetables. We almost ordered two sides of fries but thankfully the waiter informed us that they are HUGE portions so we just ordered the one with a side of veggies. The lobster was tender and soft shelled which made it easy to break apart. My partner's skate was fantastic and I would totally get that next time. The grilled veggies stood out as very good as well (especially the eggplant). I highly recommend Pearl and look forward to coming back again when in the area.

As a neighbor, I pass by Pearl Oyster Bar all the time and have been meaning to go in. Every time I've walked by it looks warm and inviting. As soon as I stepped foot inside I knew this place had a local spin to it and it felt like home. We sat down at a corner table that gave a view of the street. The waiter was very friendly and helpful, he let us try about three different wines before we settled on one. I am a huge fan of fresh seafood so would recommend everything on the menu. We ordered 2 rounds of East Coast oysters and the smaller seafood platter which came with a lobster tail, clams, oysters and shrimp. We also ordered the moles au frite which I loved because of the creamy spin they put on the traditional garlic white wine. This place is fantastic for walk in, casual and perfect for fresh things from the sea. My new spot!
