Faultless
We have been fortunate to dine at this restaurant a number of times over the last twenty years.
It has been perfect on every occasion including the last, my birthday earlier this month.
This has to be one of Australia's best restaurants. The wine list is superb showcasing the best of Penfold.
The food is innovative. If you have the degustation menu allow three hours.
Oh and go really hungry otherwise you won't make it to the finish line. The portion size is perfect, it just that seven courses add up.
If you can afford it, go, you won't be disappointed.
A must on your SA itinerary
Firstly Ann(e) was the most wonderful guide and really made our tour amazing! You could see her passion and knowledge! On International Women’s Day it was wonderful to hear the history behind the estate and name and realise that Mary Penfold really was so important to the dynasty! The tour is great and a trip down to the cellars and winemaking vats is fantastic! The tastings were lovely and informative! Don’t leave without a bottle or two !

Lovely food in lovely surroundings. Please renew or at least sharpen the blunt steak knives, though.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent in every way - what an experience.
Six of us on a Wednesday evening. We so much enjoyed the total experience and the food is a kaleidoscope of tastes.
The reader must experience Magill at least once.
Surprisingly the wine costs were very good and, of course, an excellent selection.
We will return.
Excellent food being ruined by bad service
We have been coming to the restaurant over the last 10 years and in all likelihood, this was our last.
We dined on a Saturday night so had to go with the degustation option which was fine. The problem was more or less as soon as one sat down and even before one had finished ordering the wine, the food came flying out. Human beings are not robots and it takes time to eat. At one stage, we had five starters one our table while I was still choosing the wine for the night.
The biggest sin of the night was when the wine list was taken away from us when I only had chosen the white and was still looking for options to place a second bottle. And why was the wine list taken away? Yes, you guessed it - to make room for more starters! And this is supposed to be a food AND wine destination!
I know with COVID, getting staff and retaining staff can be difficult but the ones we had were truly robotic in their service mentality. You would get more joy eating at a kaiten-sushi restaurant. Engagement is a foreign concept to the staff and an whiff of arrogance is never too far away.
As for the food, it was actually superb but the quantity is twice what you need.
If only we hadn’t felt rushed……
We had absolutely no complaints about the food. It was all simply stunning. We had the three-course option instead of the degustation (as we had a lot of dining planned in the days ahead) and it was absolutely the right amount of food.....and such exceptional food. Every dish was a winner……..although if I could have the Mayura beef for entrée, main course and dessert next time that would probably be preferable ; )
The dishes have a perfect balance of traditional flavours and styles against those modern quirks and surprises that we all looks forward to when fine dining. The little savoury cannoli snacks were exceptional!
And the view is just gorgeous. It really is the perfect ‘WOW’ restaurant for a special occasion.
So that is why we felt pretty disappointed by the pace of the evening. We felt hurried. There was no other table coming after us but it was too fast. Things moved too quickly and when we even specifically asked for a gap before coffees would be served at the end, they too arrived in a flash on the table.
When spending so much money, particularly on the wines by the glass, which are HUGELY expensive, you want to be able to ‘settle’ for a bit between services and reflect on each course and glass and not feel harassed. So, for such a renowned and successful restaurant, that really was a shame for us.
We also wish that when you have a drink before dinner in the lounge area, you would be presented with a drinks list. It is a) presumptuous not to show your guests a price/drinks list and b) strange to expect they can magically dream up on the spot what they might like to drink when asked, without having some inspiration from a listing.
Great service, view, food
After many years living in South Australia, we finally went for a Saturday lunch for my 50th birthday. We had read and heard many great things, so arrived with high expectations.
Lovely location and view over city. We picked a great day for weather as well, so that helped ;-)
We had pre-lunch drinks, and then moved to our table for two.
My wife got to put her handbag on a special holder next to the table (we had not see than before!).
Service was very good throughout the meal. The 7 course degustation with matching wine was really good and interesting. The 'snack' course prior is pretty extensive and again, very good and interesting!
This obviously comes at a cost (about 800 AUD for two), but recommended!
Superb meal, service, location and wine (and not stupendously expensive)
I recently visited for the lunch degustation and it is absolutely amazing. 8 courses (more when you count the multiple ‘snacks’) of pure delight.
The service was 11 out of 10. The Hungarian sommelier has amazing knowledge but is entirely unpretentious. He is a joy. He can talk to people with any wine knowledge and exudes enthusiasm. World class.
The other staff, also world class. Just faultless.
The location is amazing, not too far from centre of Adelaide.
For what you get, the cost of the degustation menu is excellent value.
The wine list is of course remarkable and the mark up in terms of price is actually pretty reasonable.
Perhaps the Penfolds champagne (made in France) and was an experiment rather than a success (I might not order again) but if that’s the only minor criticism you can find, you’ve have a pretty spectacular day. The champagne wasn’t bad.
Lovely ambience and outlook.
Lovely ambience and outlook. The food is lovely and I am going with 3.5 to 4. We went for the wine tasting plate with our meal which was a great experience. Then off to the cellar door where the staff are very giving with information and helpful. I am a tad poorer but I only plan to do it once.

My wife and I experienced an outstanding night . Set on a hill in Magill overlooking the beautiful city of Adelaide . The food and matching wine degustation was excellent, every course and wine perfect. Very professional staff with outstanding knowledge of there product. This was a bucket list experience for us ( don’t usually spend that type of money on a meal ) but we are so happy we did. Go try it
