Piccino San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Honestly, I'm surprised at how many good reviews there are
Honestly, I'm surprised at how many good reviews there are for this place. It is a very vibey environment and the staff were super kind, but the food did not live up to the hype. The salad was probably the best thing on the menu, and I didn't even come for the salad. The pizzas and pastas had no flavor. With the amount of great Italian restaurants in the city, this would be at the bottom of my list. Perhaps the breakfast is better (hence the reviews).
This is my favorite spot in SF for a date night with my son.
He loves Italian food, appreciates good EVOO and amazing woodfired pizza. The decor is modern/fresh classic and tasteful city vibes. I particularly like the Funghi pizza and the linguini with fresh crab.
Had a great meal here.
Brussel sprouts were an amazing appetizer, pizza was good, my pasta stuffed with short ribs was incredible, other pasta dishes were good as well. Atmosphere nice, service excellent. A bit pricey though, bill was over $400 for 5 of us for dinner and a round of drinks for everyone.
Fresh, delightful food and lovely seating inside and outside
No, they do NOT use low-cost ingredients! My lunch salad was a generous size using fresher lettuce than I can get at the farmer's market or Berkeley Bowl right now. The pizza was also good, though that's not my favorite food. The service was excellent. We sat outside, midweek, which was very quiet, enjoying the trees and the yellow exterior of the building. Will definitely come back, maybe for dinner.
Ordered a fungi pizza as per recommendation to go.
They gave me the wrong pizza, would've been fine if the pizza they gave me was anything but thier cheapest strong plain cheese bread. I'd pref Pizza Hut over that one tbh. (Never order the pizza Bianca) I had to run for a warriors game so I just asked the guy dealing with me to refund me half of the pizza. Haven't received money back was still charged $18 bucks when the pizza I was forced to throw costs $21.... Tbh giving someone your most basic pizza getting it wrong and for the inconvenience it caused me i feel like it's normal to just refund the whole pizza at that point. You guys messed up, i got your worst pizza and had to throw it. Went hungry to the game. To not even refund 50% correctly or charge me for the initial higher costing pizza when that's not what I got ... that's hella messed up.
What a wonderful little gem.
Truly amazing food. Prices are reasonable. Very good cocktails and the atmosphere is really really cute! Will definitely be back for brunch!
This might have been my favorite meal i've had in the 7
This might have been my favorite meal i've had in the 7 years i've lived in San Francisco. The Duck Confit Papardelle was the best dish i've ever had, hands down. NOTE: We went in Feb 2024 so if the menu is seasonal, go in February at least once in your life for this dish. My boyfriend had the Lemon Linguini and it was like an upgraded cacio e pepe (he added the crab which i recommend you do) and it was heavenly. I think I also had my absolute favorite dessert i've ever had...the lemon pudding cake. WOWOWOWOW. It melted in my mouth. I don't drool over desserts at restaurants, but this had me speechless. The portions were perfect, the atmosphere was amazing, and the service was impeccable. 11/10. Chefs kiss.
One of my fav Italian restaurants in the city, fresh pasta
One of my fav Italian restaurants in the city, fresh pasta with seasonal ingredients. Menu very consistent and the service is very friendly. A hidden gem in dog patch district. If you are an Italian food you must try!
Quaint little place in the Dogpatch.
Atmosphere is very nice. Menu is not kid-friendly. Waiter was friendly. Disappointed that the lunch menu is so limited. Would like to see more vegan/vegetarian options. Portions are small. There are no vegan options from the 5 appetizers or 4 entrees. The fungi pizza was ok... just basic. FYI, a 6% fee is added to the bill- doesn't say what this fee is for. Nice place for coffee and dessert. Would look somewhere else for a good salad and pasta primavera though.
I never ever write reviews, no matter how bad the place,
I never ever write reviews, no matter how bad the place, food or service is. But Piccino can be proud - they pushed me to write a review, and not a good one. I went there for lunch with colleagues, to try this famous and raved-about place. Seeing all those beautiful pizzas in people's reviews, I ordered persimmon pizza, expecting adventurous flavors and juicy slices of persimmon fruit mimicking pepperoni. I got a circle of flatbread with cheese and little black plops/"poops" of shredded and sloppy-soft radicchio. Total disappointment. No persimmon in sight. I asked the waiter and was told that the orange drizzle is "persimmon pure". The pizza was bitter (radicchio) and boring. I was thinking maybe it was me, but my colleagues tried my pizza and bluntly said that it was gross and disgusting. I must admit that it was the worst pizza I had in my life. And I did have my share of pizzas around the world with toppings ranging from egg, through beetroot, to octopus. Anchovies are "tame" (and delicious) on that list. And the price of $25 + 20% tip makes this pizza even worse. It is embarrassing to compare, but for 1/3 of this price I can get much better tasting and 4 times bigger pizza at 7 eleven. So I am not going back to Piccino ever again, alone or with guests, and will never suggest it to anyone. This pizza and its bitter aftertaste (not only because of radicchio) will stay with me forever.

The french toast was the best! Incredibly fresh bread with a seasonal compote, paired with an oat milk latte. My favorite kind of brunch. The menu had a great variety and the portions were just the right amount. The space had huge windows, great natural light, and comfortable seating. It was the perfect spot for a girls brunch. They also had a covered outdoor seating area. We were in the restaurant space but right next door is a separate space to grab coffee or a bakery item to go.
Ridiculously Good Meal On So Many Levels. + Event Space?? WOW!
First, some context on who's reviewing. I have a culinary background with back-of-house station position experience. As an events producer/activations manager, I've engaged countless caterers & dined in "almost" all the restaurants in SF that are worth your time based on very simple criteria: Food, Service, Dining Experience (venue, acoustics, location, size), & Value ($ -vs- portion). The only thing that upsets me more than food that's not served HOT is walking out hungry; This foodie walked out happy! Review for Dinner / Saturday Night / 6:30 pm / 2 people Location: Dog Patch Neighborhood, close to 3rd Street. Parking: Decent. Good after 6 p.m., but it is in a residential area. You'll be competing with residents. Outside Venue: Located on the corner, with a fabulous parklet on the side street (with heat lamps). The entrance is on the side street. Inside Venue: Great lighting; good flow to navigate; open kitchen with bar seating; Secondary bar area to the right with more seating & standing room; clean bathrooms. The color palette is soft & inviting with wood overtones. **Fun Fact: tiny & secluded room off the right side of the bar area; neat for small gatherings w comfy seats (bonus!) Food: In one word... DELICIOUS! (See Photos!) + "In-House Pasta" - Burrata, scallion salsa, roasted stone fruit, Bernal bakery toast | 16 - Pappardelle, braised veal ragu, gypsy pepper, garden herbs | 30 - Chiocciole, fennel sausage, braised kale, parmigiano, pangrattato | 26 - Flourless chocolate cake, espresso gelato, salted caramel | 14 Service: On Point! Our needs were always met & our server was awesome. Summary: I'm so picky because I can make most restaurant dishes, so when I come across a spot that is above average just on 1 visit, I'm obligated to return just to affirm my assessment; Great Dining Experience. Looking forward to returning soon.
Ridiculously overpriced -for minute portions - GO ELSEWHERE!
Went for dinner with family short notice. Service was decent and the food was very good. But $150 for 2 adults and 3 kids for some tomato pasta and 2 portions of Foccacia bread? Really? Felt totally robbed by this place. Portions tiny. Avoid at all costs unless you like being ripped off.
Piccino lost their grove
I've been to a lot of great and good restaurants, and Piccino isn't one of them. It used to be a "neighborhood gem" in Dog Patch, with a friendly, millennial, counter-culture vibe and a stable, occasionally brilliant menu. I don't know what happened to them, but the last two times I've been there the vibe is gone, replaced by some kind of food mill: officious, almost rude, unhelpful, lackluster food, unfocused, not great. It's a pity. Whoever bought out one or more the previous partners is running the place into the ground: minimum cost ingredients, minimum wage workers, and maximum table turnover. It's all about the margin now, nothing to do with the original values.

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
