Not up to the hype - way overrated.
Heard so much about this place before going - and left us underwhelmed. The service was rushed, unfriendly and not very helpful (the specialty Tafelspitz has some nuances to serving this shared meal - zero explanation offered - burnt fingers from the hot plate). Four of us spent over 400 Euro (with a couple of drinks each). Interesting to see some of the pictures of famous people who passed through - but really do not get the hype, We went to numerous other restaurants during our stay (some comparable such as Lugeck, some smaller family owned (which were by far the most enjoyable)), and Plachutta was our lest favorite and by a long shot, most expensive. One and done!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Tafelspitz
We had been trying to find the best Tafelspitz in Vienna, and after some good (but not outstanding) tries we found the very best. You would probably want to make a reservation, this is one of the most popular Viennese restaurants, with its fame well deserved. The Tafelspitz was superb, starting with the very tasty soup. Yes, you actually eat the soup here (in another famous restaurant we were very much looked down upon when suggesting) and it comes with bone marrow on toast – delicious. The meat was tender, juicy and tasty, and the spinach extraordinary. The Grüner Veltiner was good. Service was polite and efficient. We had an excellent lunch! Shall most certainly return for more.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding cuisine with excellent service
It’s an outstanding restaurant quite near to the centre. The service is amazing. They gave us a really nice treatment. The stuff is very friendly and polite. The quality of food is amazing. They serve a typical Austrian food. My family and I rate us with five stars
Be the first to ReplyOnce was enough. Barely average.
We found the service was slow and uncaring. We had a reservation, for which they seemed unprepared, and made us wait at the bar, which has no chairs and is like a runway crowded with the waiters hustling drink orders. It's also the passageway for the service staff. We had no option but to stand there, which embarrassed me since I had a guest, and we just had to wait to get the attention of the waiter. Food was average, OK, nothing special, virtually all meat dishes. For me, having invited a guest there (for the first time) the experience was overpriced, overrated, and not a good value at all, considering we had no starters, just a main course with one drink each, and one desert each for a total of 150 Euros. I wish I knew how to write "buyer beware" in German. I would never recommend this establishment, will never go back, and adamantly warn others, especially visitors and travelers, to stay away. There any very many other BETTER restaurants which offer a better value and a better experience in Vienna. Would never recommend and will never come back.
Be the first to ReplyDISAPPOINTMENT AND OVERPRICED! NEVER AGAIN!
After all the day walking around the city, I was so desperate to sit and eat something so I went this place without searching any info about it unfortunately. 1- For a ridiculous plate of ‘ only schitzel’ ( veal) I payed If I am not wrong 25.60 € something! overpriced!! No side included. Unlike its competetiors, you have to pay extra for potato salad or french fries next to it. Nothing was special at all. I don’t understand why this place is popular. 2 - They brought the bread and butter without asking me , I didn’t touch it. But later I learned from other comments that they are charging also that if you touch it of course . 3- As if they didn’t add service fee already something like 3.5 €, when I asked the bill the waiter came to me and asked tips by force. Already payed the service fee, why this pressure in the last moment? If I want to give it, I leave it on the table. You don’t have to force me to give tips for a place and dish that I didn’t like at all. This was the most stupid part of the experience. So, will never go again and never recommend to anyone definetely.
Be the first to ReplyGood but with some issues
Food was good 4 stars, but wine by the glass not so good, and service from our waiting staff was slick and somewhat condescending, also ordered less food than brought to our table, got more food, and paid for more food. Best to be careful here about language barrier and ordering at this establishment. Also a tourist heavy place.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Dinner
My boyfriend and I ate at Plachutta Wollzeile for dinner on Easter Sunday. I had the famous Tafelspitz with a side of creamed spinach and my boyfriend had the Roasted Sirloin Beef. The Tafelspitz was so delicious, especially the broth that the meat was cooked in! I was not a big fan of the bone marrow, but followed all of the instructions and gave it all a try. My boyfriend’s sirloin was really great also, super tender with a wonderful flavor. This was our favorite place we ate dinner in Vienna, highly recommended!
Be the first to Reply4 Euros Per Person Seating Fee?????
We went for dinner here and both food and service were good, but nothing spectacular. Nothing out of the ordinary. When I got my check, I questioned a charge for 7.80 Euros, and the server told me that this is the seating fee to cover the 3 pieces of bread and 2 cubes of butter they put on the table (which I did not order), and because they fold the cloth napkins in a pretty figure. Really???? I hate when places nickel and dime customers. We spent over 100 euros here, do they really need to charge us a seating fee??? Don’t go here… I know I will not go back.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible service at a legendary Vienna place
We arrived, got our table and some bread. Then we waited 35 minutes until anybody noticed us. Nobody offered us water, and nobody brought us a wine/drinks card. Then we ordered main courses and appetizer drinks – still no wine/drinks card. 20 minutes later we were asked to change tables without any further explanation. The waiter that asked us was already the fourth person we’ve had contact with and she showed no interest in our situation, and just said that “they needed the table in that section” We moved to another table. And 10 minutes a fifth waiter asked us, if we were ready order. We told him that we had already ordered from another table half an hour ago – and pointed to the table. At the same time we asked for the wine card again – and eventually ordered drinks. Suddenly our main courses came. That happened in a friendly but very nervous and abrupt manner. Our drinks never came, so we had a Limoncello to accompany our main ourses – no wine, no water or anything. At the end a waiter asked us if we had finished our main courses. When we said yes, we very quickly and without interest removed everything from the table – and threw (I’m not exaggerating) desert cards on the table without a word. This is when we decided to call it a day. We asked for the bill, and I went to speak to the floor manager at th entrance. I told him the story, but all he would give me was an apology and some free drinks or desert. I told him that our experience was already ruined, and that we would rather stop here with some kind of discount. This was not possible “due to management” he said. We couldn’t even get something “to go”. So we paid and left without a kind word – and with a lot of involved waiters looking right through us. The bill was £165. With a normal service and good experience, we would have spend £50 more. So there is our discount, you can say… This service level is not suitable for an establishment like Plachutta. Unfortunately I can see, we are not the only ones. By the way… nobody ever took the table over, where we started…
Be the first to ReplyBest Tafelspitz in Vienna
It is said you can eat the best Tafelspitz in town and we were not disappointed! If you want an authentic Viennese food experience, be sure to visit but remember to book in advance.
Be the first to ReplyA hurried room but otherwise exactly what it should be
With three locations amongst a family of six Restaurants Plachutta is nothing short of an Austrian icon, Emperor Francis Joseph’s fondness for boiled Beef carried on with careful consistency for locals and tourists alike.
A true Imperial tradition with copper pans and a dozen different cuts of Beef available daily, guests entering Plachutta’s Wollzeile location are immediately greeted by attentive servers, tables inside or out available beginning at 11h30 daily and most occupied by those with reservations.
Working with only Austrian Beef and local farmers, a point of pride spelled out alongside how to best enjoy Tafelspitz, dinner begins with tepid Bread and ice-cold Butter that is easily forgotten for starters presented singular or as a “Trilogy” of Beef in Aspic, smooth Tartare and creamy Goose Foie Gras beneath a torched Sugar top.
Encouraged to try Plachutta’s Elderflower Sparkling Wine alongside the boiled Beef, in this case three cuts ranging from lean to marbled, Tafelspitz earns its accolades with beautiful texture while clear Broth finds lots of flavor from Root Vegetables, Chives and melted Marrow.
Upsold on Spinach, unnecessary when fried Potatoes and Marrow on Toast plus sliced Pancakes in the Soup are available, Sauces consist of enjoyable Chive Cream and Applesauce aggressively flavored with Horseradish.
An orderly experience intended to turn tables with servers only somewhat fluent in English, Dessert saw a Chocolate “Souffle” accidentally served instead of the Dairy Cream version requested, though it seems safe to assume neither would have been as authentic or memorable as tangy Sweet Curd Dumplings atop Berry Compote.
