Recommend to make reservation.
We were lucky and got a table around 6pm. Don't risk it, particularly if you are short on time. This is a must in Vienna. Ambiance is a mix of local families and tourists, but this is not the typical touristy place. Service was fast, not too friendly but expedient. Place is crowded, and they gave us a table w/o reservation so will give them a pass on that. On to food. You will be tempted to go for Schnitzel and I will not judge. It is really good: tender, crispy, buttery. Go with potato salad or cucumber salad so you have something fresh in your palate to balance the Schnitzel. Now, locals share Tafelspitz and you should too. Do a bit of research and pick the meat that best suits you. Procedure : start with the soup, they will bring a big bowl to share and individual bowls for each person. They should serve you the first scoops. I had 'pancakes' (thin slices of thin bread) as a bed for the soup. Delicious! Then, go for the bone marrow. Yes, just do it please. I have eaten it since i was a kid. They do a good job here. Take the bone marrow out of the bowl and spread it on your bread. It is a perfect companion to the soup. The meat was a bit underwhelming, i tried the mint sauce and made it more interesting, with more texture. We had to skip dessert, as this was plenty! Excellent dinner for a cold winter night. It will get you satisfied, nurtured and ready for a nice walk in one of the Economist's most livable cities in the world. Go on enjoy!

My hotel made my reservation when I arrived at the restaurant they didn't have it, I was standing next to him when he spoke to them I have to assume it was the restaurant that screwed up, They did seat me at a loud table by the front reception desk. That looked as of were just thrown there. Kinda the kids table at Thanksgiving. Was highly recommend by several people so I stayed otherwise would have left

This restaurant is one of my favorites in Vienna and I have been bringing my business partners there for the last 15 years. The last time I came with a colleague, I was very uncomfortable, first, because of the unpolite staff and the amount of Tafelspitz that was served (and charged) for two people, which was actually for one. When I complained about the quantity, the waiter told me that there was a little more soup and potatoes, but I said that's why less meat and spinach. He probably didn't know that I was in that restaurant very often and that I knew what the portions were usually. Moreover, it is one of the more expensive restaurants in the city. Last visit left a bitter impression, I am very disappointed.

It's rare that after all these years of eating around the world I encounter something truly novel to my palate. I can totally see why Tafelspitz was a favorite dish of Emperor Franz Josef, since it's delicious and has many different phases from the same pot. I think the first phase with that delicious broth was my favorite. It had the long simmered richness of beef pho, minus the Asian spices. Perhaps the best beef broth I've ever had. Instead of noodles, there were thin pancake slices that worked well. I also like the thinly sliced and tender veggies in the mix. The second phase was truly indulgent where you scoop out a marrow bone, spread a heaping portion of bone marrow on toast and then season with salt and pepper. Bone marrow as an appetizer is not new to me, but fishing the bone out of the soup that it had flavored was new and exciting. The final phase felt like prime rib dinner service, but with pot roast as the meat. I liked the presentation of fried potato shreds, blended spinach, apple horseradish sauce and creamy chives sauce. The meat chunks did indeed taste like their "boiled beef" name translation, so felt like common pot roast. But with memories of the previous two phases, it was still elevated in my mind. The place also felt kinda fancy with table clothes and formally dressed waiters. While we had it as a late lunch after a long day of tourist trekking, many other people seemed to be having fancy business lunches to impress their business guests.

After much research, I had this Plachutta location selected to get my first Viennese meal. As I was waiting for my luggage at the airport, I saw video advertisements for Plachutta above the conveyor belts. I thought uh oh, this place I'm planning on going for dinner has tourist trap written all over it. But I did read this particular location seems to be more popular with locals and better than the other ones. Perhaps because of the heavy tourist advertising, my expectations were low...but everything was outstanding. And the Wiener Schnitzel left me searching for one as good on the rest of my trip, and I never could. Chanterelle mushroom terrine appetizer - 4 stars. This was a very nice beginning that had a richness to it, along with some greens. Perhaps a little crunchy something would have been nice to spread it on. Tafelspitz- 5 stars. The reason for coming really, as it's a fun word to say, and one of the most popular Viennese dishes. Kind of like an Asian Hot pot, but eaten in reverse, first the broth is served and then the sliced tender beef is plated with crispy potatoes. Also enjoyed the horseradish applesauce side that you eat with the beef. We ordered this for 2, but along with other dishes ate it family style for 4. Wiener Schnitzel - 5 stars. Like I said best I had while in Vienna. Nice and crispy on the outside, tender savory veal on the inside. The vinegar like room temperature potato salad is very important to enhance each bite as is a light squeeze of lemon. Goulash and dumplings - 5 stars. We had them served separately so we could share easily. Very tasty. I would have been happy to just eat this as my main dish as well. My tourist fears were put to rest at this location...and I highly recommend Plachutta as a must do, to anyone coming to Vienna.

This place had been recommended by a fellow American who knows Vienna quite well, and it exceeded our expectations. We went with a group of friends, who all shared different versions of Tafelspitz, a beef dish served in the most exquisite broth! Anyone who goes there should try this particular dish! The atmosphere was jovial, the servers attentive and in good humor. Next time we go to Vienna, I know we will return there!

Love this place! I have been here years ago while on business trip and now so glad to visit with family. The best wiener schnitzel and really enjoyed the veal goulash and roasted calf liver! I appreciated information on allergens according to Codex recommendations. Overall service was great!

You go to Plachutta for their Tafelspitz , which is the best according to Viennese friends . Incredibly nice and helpful staff who taught us step by step how to eat the meal properly they're extremely popular and of course busy so you need to make reservations in advance

Be the first to ReplyThis was one of the most disappointing and embarrassing
This was one of the most disappointing and embarrassing interactions we've ever had. We brought a group of international business people here for a dinner during our stop in Wien. After confirming our reservation by phone, we showed up only to be turned away and told we did not have a "confirmation code". This was a detail that was left out during our call with the restaurant and not something we knew to look for. As we tried to discuss our situation, we were aggressively interrupted by the rude and angry hostess. We were welcomed at Restaurant Meissl & Schadn Wien which is a short trip down the street and a fantastic meal. We were fortunate to have a contact that got us into Meissl & Schadn on short notice. Shame on Plachutta for their disrespectful and rude behavior. My strongest recommendation is to avoid this place. There are many wonderful restaurants in Wien with great cuisine and who treat people with dignity and respect.

Such a lovely meal here, be sure to make a reservation in advance as it seemed walking in was quite difficult.I ordered the infamous Tafelspitz, a typical Austrian beef stew served with creamed spinach and hash browned potatoes. It was so delicious, although they didn't explain how to properly eat it a diagram was provided. First you drink the soup, then you spread the bone marrow onto the bread, then you take the beef out and eat it alongside your spinach and potatoes. I added pancakes to the stew which served as a kind of noodle. I would definitely come back here and recommend sharing the stew as it's a large portion!
Be the first to ReplyIt was the best of times; it was the worst of times.
I have always enjoyed eating at Plachutta and have dined at several of their locations. (I prefer the "gasthaus zur opera" while my daughter in law prefers this one.)As always, the food was great. The Wiener Schnitzel was perfect - a large portion, perfectly seasoned and breaded and tender; and the accompanying potato salad was the perfect pairing. The Tafelspitz (an Austrian dish of boiled beef) was great - the broth rich and tasty and the beef tender. The beef tips over noodles was not quite up to the others; the beef was not tender, but still tasty. Most of our (large) party were too full for desert, but the crรจme brรปlรฉe was to die for good. The "house brew" Ottakringer Beer is my favorite - and didn't disappoint. There is a good selection of wines as well. So, with all of that "good," what was bad? The service! Vienna restaurants are not known for great service, but this was outright horrible. The manager didn't seat us for 15 minutes notwithstanding an advance reservation for a large table - which was set and open the entire time. Our waiter took the drink order and then forgot to bring the drinks and the head server took forever to take our order. So, after dinner took too long - entirely their fault, we got the "bums rush" to leave. Nein, nein, nein!
Be the first to ReplyBest to avoid this trap.
So sad because it was highly rated but clearly not deserving. Boiled meat was of low quality and stringy. Side dishes were good. We had reservations but were informed that gave us exactly 1 hour to eat and leave regardless of the speed of service or how many courses we may want. The focus was to get us in & out as quickly as possible. They said it was because they were going to be busy but the entire time we were there lots of empty tables surrounded us. We skipped ordering an additional round of drinks and dessert because the place was so unwelcoming. We were so excited to have traditional Austrian cuisine but there are certainly other places that will welcome you cheerfully.
Be the first to ReplyWow, wow.
As another reviewer put it, this was the "low-point" of my trip to Vienna. It's embarrassing that this is considered a high class dining experience. I came with my friend, who is a local. We had reservations, but we're very much not treated like guests at this establishment. When we walked in, the employees at the counter did not greet us, in fact, they looked at us in an irritated manner and waited for us to explain our reason for even being inside. When my friend informed the employee that we had a dinner reservation, we were walked over to a table for four, but we only had two people in our party. Turned out the table for four is for FOUR people, including two complete strangers! They attempted to seat us at a table with two other individuals? When we asked for another seating arrangement sans our reservation, we were walked to another 4 person table with another couple sitting there?! We asked a second time for another seating arrangement (the restaurant was not busy and there were plenty of two-person tables available) and turned down (the employee made zero eye contact or sincere effort to acknowledge us during any time of this encounter). The server was ok, but the food was unimpressive. I would not recommend ordering fish or shrimp, given that Vienna is landlocked and therefore seafood must be frozen to be transported here, and it certainly tasted defrosted. During our dinner, another couple was seated at the adjacent private table with their DOG (this was indoors). After speaking with other locals, it seems like the reputation of Plachutta has significantly dropped. I would never recommend this place, unless I were trying to punish someone with a disappointing evening. If you want more honest reviews about the restaurant, they can be found under the "not recommended reviews" because if you're any kind of "other", that WILL be the service you receive. This is not the typical and casual service of Vienna, it seems to be a particular flavor or terrible at Plachutta.

Be the first to ReplyWith three locations amongst a family of six Restaurants
With three locations amongst a family of six Restaurants Plachutta is nothing short of an Austrian icon, Emperor Francis Joseph's fondness for boiled Beef carried on with careful consistency for locals and tourists alike.A true Imperial tradition with copper pans and a dozen different cuts of Beef available daily, guests entering Plachutta's Wollzeile location are immediately greeted by attentive servers, tables inside or out available beginning at 11h30 daily and most occupied by those with reservations.Working with only Austrian Beef and local farmers, a point of pride spelled out alongside how to best enjoy Tafelspitz, dinner begins with tepid Bread and ice-cold Butter that is easily forgotten for starters presented singular or as a "Trilogy" of Beef in Aspic, smooth Tartare and creamy Goose Foie Gras beneath a torched Sugar top.Encouraged to try Plachutta's Elderflower Sparkling Wine alongside the boiled Beef, in this case three cuts ranging from lean to marbled, Tafelspitz earns its accolades with beautiful texture while clear Broth finds lots of flavor from Root Vegetables, Chives and melted Marrow.Upsold on Spinach, unnecessary when fried Potatoes and Marrow on Toast plus sliced Pancakes in the Soup are available, Sauces consist of enjoyable Chive Cream and Applesauce aggressively flavored with Horseradish. An orderly experience intended to turn tables with servers only somewhat fluent in English, Dessert saw a Chocolate "Souffle" accidentally served instead of the Dairy Cream version requested, though it seems safe to assume neither would have been as authentic or memorable as tangy Sweet Curd Dumplings atop Berry Compote.

Great restaurant! Wonderful service! The food was excellent! The creme brulee and chocolate mousse was wonderful ! The waiters were extremely attentive and helpful with selections. As for the racist comments below- I did not experience that. My coworker is non white and we were sat in the front of the restaurant and received stellar service ( they even plated our food). I'm not saying the below reviews aren't valid- My party and I did not experience that. Also, our service was wonderful- after reading the reviews below, I double checked to make sure I was at the same restaurant. Our Wine was constantly filled. Waiter checked in quite frequently to make sure the food was to our liking. Maybe it's under new management?

I had my first taste of beef goulash here and it was really good. ย The meat was tender, the noodles was pretty good. ย They brought the stuff in little containers and put then in front of you on a hot plate. ย Then they served a portion of it on your plate and as you finished, they would ladle more. ย Really good service...The desserts were pretty good too..
Be the first to ReplyLoved it.
Was looking forward to coming here and was not disappointed. Very nice place inside. We started by splitting an order of the beef tartar which was very good. I ordered the traditional Tafelspitz and it was fantastic. Its like a really good slice of prime rib submerged in a tasty soup broth with veggies. There is a bone inside the pot in which you spread the marrow over the the Tafelspitz and it comes with a nice horseradish dip you use also. There is a whole process on how you have bowl of the broth first etc. but whatever, I just ate it as it came. Loved it all. Good beer on draft also.
Be the first to ReplyService is horrible.
It took us forever to get drinks and the waiters were fighting. There was a back room where foreigners were very deliberately stuck and we had to share a table. The beef and broth were good and flavorful but the experience overall because of the poor service was a huge miss.
Be the first to ReplyWow! This restaurant was amazing! Our friend Patrick made
Wow! This restaurant was amazing! Our friend Patrick made our reservations for us 3 weeks in advance. Our table was wonderful and the service delightful! Try the goose liver- be brave! As an American I never had eaten goose liver- I must say it was tasty. Our dinners - a variety : veal, steaks and lamb were simply out of this world and our sides were served to us from our table- fancy schmancy! I forgot but I did have the pumpkin soup/ why don't we see this on American menus during October and November!! It was delicious and had a touch of pumpkin oil on top- mmmm. We enjoyed several bottles of wine from the local region which was wonderful- considering I'm from California- we drink a lot of good wine- so we knew our friend Patrick knew his wines too! We saved ourselves for dessert for cappuccinos instead. By all means visit, but try to make reservations aHead of time!

EXTREMELY RUDE TO TOURIST, the manager even PULL my chair to urge us to leave !On 2 Oct, we arrived at the restaurant (walk in) and waited for around 10 mins to get the table. It was 8:05 and someone in the restaurant (I thought he was the manager) said we had only one hour to finish the dinner, we agreed to it. At 8:50 I asked the waiter if they got any takeaway box to take away the food we haven't finished and they said they had. So we waited until 9, no one gave us any takeaway box. The manager came again and urged us to leave now as there's lot of ppl waiting outside(of course he had a very rude attitude). First of all I DO NOT have any intention to stay any longer I am only waiting for the waiter to give us the takeaway box. If we dun have indication to leave why would we have to ask for the takeaway box at 8:50?!Second, if you said one hour later, to be fair and accurate, it court at when we sit down (8:05 pm), which means 9:05 pm. ย If you want us to leave at 9 sharp why don't you just say it clearly in the beginning to avoid this misunderstanding? I said to the manager no one gave us the takeaway box he said there's no any takeaway box in our restaurant. If there is, ask the one who said they 'be got takeaway box but not me. WTF???? After a few mins (at 9:05), the other waiter finally gave us the takeaway bag and we packed the food ASAP.The manager is still not satisfied that we haven't left. HE EVEN PULL MY CHAIR to force us to leave at 9:05!!!!!!We observed that they had very different attitude between the locals and the tourists. Dear tourists, just please don't go. If you read other comments actually they got a lot of bad reviews regarding the rude service to the tourists. You are here to enjoy the beauty of Vienna but not receiving this rude service and had bad impression on this city.

If you are Asian, they will lead you all the way to the end of the restaurant and sit with all the other Asian in a room. It was a strange feeling because you come to their country, try to experience their culture and atmosphere, but it felt very racial segregate. It is up to you if you are ok with this, good thing that the food is pretty delicious. Maybe next use English last name to make reservation and see if they still take you to the Asian room.
