It's really, really good - but somehow I was expecting even more. A month later, I don't remember what I ate - but I remember I was quite pleased.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a lovely meal here last month.
It's a cute little restaurant with a very capable team delivering nice food. We did the Krug tasting menu which was a great way to go. The atmosphere is quiet and very casual.
Be the first to ReplyGenerous portion size, friendly service during busy lunch
Generous portion size, friendly service during busy lunch hour, fantastic flavours. I would definitely come back. For lunch menu (£35), I ordered quail (£3 supplement), lamb, and pain perdu. The quail turned out to be my favourite dish which is full of rich flavours but also very light. The lamb is a bit heavy after the quail but the pain perdu just lifted the lamb really well. Lamb alone or pain perdu alone probably wouldn't provide the taste experience I had with the quail tho. Overall I was still very happy with the food and really enjoyed my lunch visit.

Dinner at Portland this evening was the highlight of our New Years holiday in London. Splendid, comfortable space. Warm, welcoming service, delicious and beautiful food, and an all around joy to experience. The tasting menu is an excellent value, and provides a true highlight of the kitchen's formidable tallent. Michelin got it right with the *. We will be back, and if we were lucky enough to live in London, we'd be regulars at Portland. See you next time!

Portland is a very approachable restaurant; it almost feels as if you are going to a friend's place to hang out for the evening. The space is not large, but that seems to lend toward its warmth. Service was friendly and casual, if a bit lax at times. Nicely composed wine list, with options that have a sense of place. All in all, a very relaxed and cozy experience. That being said, while the food had a good foundation in flavors, it was punctuated with uneven execution on the entrees. Seemed a bit shy of the typical one Michelin star level in my experience. Recommend Portland for an upscale, casual outing but expect some quirks.Atmosphere- Warm and relaxed.- Space is rather tight with somewhat basic design, but with the dim evening lighting and view unto the kitchen felt warm and inviting.- Tables can be in very close proximity to one another.FoodGreat concepts and flavor profiles in general, but we found our experience oscillated around some highs and lows. Presentation was awesome! The snacks and first course were really excellent, but main courses left some things to be desired. With some tweaking, really think it can be excellent. On this visit we tried:- Carrot Financier (£2.50 each): Quite unique and very well done. Would be nice if one order came with 3 pieces for a higher charge. Priced per item, it feels strangely overpriced.- Ricotta Gnudi (Asparagus, Egg Yolk, Nettles - £15): A highlight and must order! Delicate but full of flavor, excellent presentation.- Todenham Manor Pig (Treviso, Lardo & Quince - £28): Flavor profile was nice. Issue was really the cut of meat. It was perhaps as much, if not more, fat than meat. This plus the lardo made it far too heavy and fatty. Such a shame as the flavors were there!- Cornish Fish (artichoke, parsnips & smoked mussel broth - £32): Too bland, though excellent presentation. Hard to justify the fact that it was most expensive on menu; execution on the fish itself was lacking.- Cheese Course (apple compote & sesame crackers - £12): Nice, if unexceptional, conclusion. All in all, we left feeling the whole experience was just alright. My wife and I both wished we had ordered the Devonshire Lamb, which looked excellent and was also on the tasting menu. It is a shame the entrees did not deliver at the same level as the earlier courses.BeverageAppreciated the approach taken on the wine list. Many options available by the glass, across a spectrum of styles and varietals. Nice descriptors given for each wine, and a very reasonably priced by the bottle selection. We quite enjoyed the 2015 Josef Chromy Pinot Noir (£60) with our meal. To conclude, the 2012 Quinta de Romaneira Port (£6) was an excellent accompaniment to the cheese course, and again fairly priced.Service- Relaxed and friendly, though unpolished. My wife asked about the type of fish and preparation for 'Cornish Fish' and got a non-answer.- A bit stretched, given the amount of work each seemed to take on, leading waitstaff to sometimes feel a bit harried with occasional lags.- 12.5% service charge automatically included.
Be the first to ReplyWhat I love about Portland is its simplicity.
To order, you can choose from a £65 tasting menu with 5 courses or "a la carte" menu of £62 for 3 courses. But the "a la carte" menu is simply between 3 options each for starter, main, and dessert, which at most places would be called a tasting menu anyway. When it's a good restaurant, I like to place my trust in the chef and do as little choosing as possible. We went for the 5 course tasting menu, which seemed like a no-brainer as it basically combined selections of the "a la carte" menu, but you got to try more dishes for basically the same price (for the mains, you got the pollock AND duck, aka 2 out of the 3 options for mains, the third option being vegetarian). It's not like they are cheap skating you either, because they give you the appetizer option with truffle. We asked about the two options for wine pairings, and the £35 one was described as more "straightforward," whereas the £60 must be more exclusive vintages, etc. We went for the £35 pairing and I thought the wines were exceptionally well chosen. The food was all delicious and beautifully plated, but what I also like is that this is a Michelin star restaurant that doesn't try to overdo it. I am quite over the fine dining menus that drag on for hours and never seem to end. At Portland, we never had to wait long, and we were even told that our table was needed back in 2 hours, which we nailed on the dot. Also a special shout out must be made for the whipped beef dripping that is served with the bread - so simple but so delicious!

Visiting London and I was keen on a great European tasting menu. Opted for Portland and their £65 5-course experience. The petit fours were delicious, and each subsequent course was wonderfully pleasant. The duck was perfectly tender, the trout imaginative and the bergamot custard a wonderful finish. The service at Portland is outstanding and charming. Wonderful wine suggestions, without upselling you to the most expensive options, with charming conversation from a humble restaurant deserving of its Michelin star.

Great ambiance - warm and inviting - plus the noise level allowed for pleasant conversation. Even with a group of guys that came in with a few too many pints under their belts, the noise just never got too much. Food was delicious overall. There were a dish here and there where the texture or flavors were unexpected and I had to adjust. It wasn't unpleasant but just a bit jarring. Highly recommended

Why 2 stars? One for some of the food was tasty. One for the good service. For the lost stars, the bill add service fee of 12.5%. We tried the taste menu, which is $65 per person for 8 tiny pieces. Each tiny TINY piece is about £7.5. It's not worth the price. You ate the art. That's why it's so pricy! We didn't order any drink. Our bill is £146.25. ( it's about $190. ($1=0.77£). Another star off because the whole meal took 2 hours, not much to eat but a lot time to wait. Each tiny TINY pieces it needed to change new fork and spoons or knife. Through the two hours, we went through 8 sets of silverwares. Such a waste! Imagine all these plate and silverwares get washed, how much water will be wasted!! One tiny piece cookie like a coin size, topped with cheese and few sweet peesOne tiny piece of cracker, some sort of paste, tiny topping, One tiny fried chicken skin, smaller than my thumb, topped with chicken liver paste, and decoration. One tiny cod( fork head size)...Lamb tasted good , two way cooked. One sized like half table spoons, one size like tea spoons.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing.
So amazing. I definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting or living in London. Each dish was extremely flavorful. Your taste buds would be able to distinct each flavor without looking using only their sense of smell and taste. I loved the decor as well. I had the chefs special and it was so good.

Portland is breathtaking and its recent star in the michelin guide is well deserved. The bare-bones atmosphere is small and overlooks the kitchen - a small room that eschews most of the pretension prevalent in Marylebone! It is all about sharing ~everything~ Minute lobster rolls with red miso, a bed of grain with a 63º duck egg.The service is top notch as well. While the word is getting out, Portland remains unassuming and lets the phenomenal dishes speak for themselves.
Be the first to ReplyGreat value for your money.
The service was very helpful, especially for London. The food was also delicious, especially the friend chicken skin starter. If you want to take pics of your food, take your plate under the front bar seating, and there's a nicely elevated platform with good lighting. Also ordered the ravioli, which came out with tons of truffles. The mushrooms were a bit acidic for my taste, but I understand what they were going for. Will be back for the full tasting menu.
