Great Food but the Service doesn’t match
The food is excellent and the setting is refreshing (a Michelin starred restaurant that reminds me of our bare bones pub in college). However, a few things about the service could be better. Our waiter (curly haired Italian) came by numerous times to ask if we would like wine. We started with 2 glasses of champagne and said we didn’t want to do the pairing because we didn’t want to drink much but he persisted nonetheless - most times asking if we wanted to order from the ‘premium’ list. As an example, a glass of their premium red is 45 euros, which doesn’t seem bad, until you realize that the pours are tiny. At the end of the meal, we were told that the tip was not included. I was surprised, and I said the reason was because all throughout Europe, in my experience, tipping was already factored into the total price. I asked him what was standard and he said 10-20%. He then proceeded to argue with me that this was common in all of Europe, including Italy and France. We had just come from Paris and this was not the case. I’ve traveled all through Europe and this is not the case. I tipped them 15%. I wrote to the restaurant over a week ago describing what had happened and there has been no response. It’s a pity because the food, as I mentioned is great.

This restaurant is worthy of the Michelin star it has earned and quite possibly two more. The courses were incredibly creative and as equally delicious. The wine pairing is a must. Not knowing what you are going to eat is not for the faint of heart but go in with an open mind and you will not be disappointed.

Amazing food with fantastic service. This restaurant absolutely deserves the Michelin star it has, if not two more. Worth every penny

A very understated venue compared to other restaurants in Vienna, however, the food is superb, its a nice touch that Mr Wolfgang is present an it makes it feel like a very personal dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyHipster indifference tarnishes otherwise expressive cuisine
Practicing what ownership refers to as “the art of reduction” Pramerl & the Wolf carries one Michelin Star in Vienna’s 9th district, the former bar turning out a nightly surprise Tasting Menu filled sophisticated flavors tarnished by service that proudly embraces hipster indifference. Just 14 seats and two services Wednesday through Saturday, the setting decidedly informal, Pramerl & the Wolf can be viewed in its entirety from the doorframe with wood only occasionally dotted by greenery or a golden garden gnome flipping the bird. Not necessarily Viennese cuisine, but instead a seasonal menu with international influence, Wines lean largely natural including bold fermented Grapes from Niederösterreich that pair quite well with Appetizers including Beef Tartare in a cup beneath Caviar and a blistered Padron Pepper stuffed with Cheese. Receiving most plates directly from Chef Wolfgang Zankl and team, Bartenders seemingly sourced straight out of Brooklyn only stopping by to give their opinion of a plate or to try and sell more Wine, course one consisted of a plump Vegetarian Steam Bun ready to be dragged through Lobster Butter alongside bright Carrot Soup and Salad. €130 for mostly modest portions, a single Oyster lost to Acid and Dill, Sturgeon from the grill was undoubtedly a highlight thanks to assertive green Sauce while the follow-up of “Carbonara” made from sliced Cephalopod would have seemed more clever had it not been seen done better before. Served in an expedited fashion, turning tables for a second seating seeing guests retrieve their own silverware from a drawer beneath the table, Zankl’s Quail arrives properly cooked atop a Potato with bold aromatics before the night’s final savory plates Domestic Wagyu amidst Radicchio and Currants with Blue Cheese giving the Meat a semblance of extended-aging. Offering no Bread or Couvert, a shame as the Buckwheat English Muffin served with Dulce de Bourgogne was world-class, Dessert saw Dark Chocolate Ice Cream decorated by Herbs, Mushrooms and Fruit before a final bite of Strawberries and White Chocolate delivered with the check.

I really liked the food - some of the dishes were quite original and unlike anything I ‘d tasted in the past. The vibe was casual and the staff was friendly. I also loved the decoration and ambiance of the restaurant. My only comment is that, in my opinion, it was a bit overpriced. I appreciated that the courses were adjusted for a gluten free diet - it would be wonderful if gluten free bread was available for the bread course as well.

As a family of food and wine lovers, this is a problematic review. Most definitely wonderfully creative eight course menu and wonderful local wines, the service is very personal and thoughtful.
However, the servings are very small, each one resembles more of a ‚welcome from the chef‘, the wine servings are below 100ml, which creates an awkward sense that you have to ask for wine.
Having dined at many Michelin one star, this is extremely expensive the the aforementioned experience. Would encourage the owners, who are clearly a great team, to reduce their margins and simply provide a better value to their customers.
Gastronomic Journey
We dined the day after restaurants were allowed to reopen again in Vienna. The setting is small and intimate, albeit with appropriate social distancing between the tables. Each course was a delight, beautifully presented. The wine pairing excellent, a good trip around the world.
This is worth a trip out of the inner stadt, but if you can get out of the tourist centre you wont be disappointed.
Fantastic food and service!
My friend and I had the good fortune of enjoying a meal at Pramerl & the Wolf shortly before everything shut down due to COVID-19. The food was exceptional and inventive while still focusing on local ingredients, and the wine pairings were perfect. Equally impressive was the service! I have a severe food allergy which I mentioned while making the booking. Generally I remind servers of this allergy, but I didn't need to at this restaurant as it was the first thing the server mentioned after introducing himself to us. The sommelier also offered to divide each wine pairing between two glasses since we only wanted one wine pairing between the two of us. Nice touches that added to our lovely experience. I hope to get back to Vienna one day and hope to enjoy another meal at this restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent, will definitely visit again when visiting Vienna
Located in an isolated street, a tiny restaurant with only 12 seats serving an excellent, delicate but very unique surprise menu. Dishes varying from venaison with beetroot and rose to puffed old Gouda with green olive as a bite, truly an explosion of flavors in a very cozy and intimate set up.
We had an excellent service, while being very relaxed and their extensive wine menu even by the glass allowed us to have a lovely evening.
When informed about my mother’s birthday that we were here to celebrate, extra small attentions were added to certain dishes, a delightful evening is all we can say.
It is a splurge and a long way from the Wiener schnitzel that we picture when thinking of Vienna but I am looking forward to my next visit during an other season to be once again beguiled by the chef surprise menu.
