Compact Space Reminded Us of a Parisian Cafe
My spouse and I visited Prune for dinner on a Sunday evening in mid-January 2020. Prune is open daily for lunch (or brunch) and dinner. We telephoned ahead to make a reservation for dinner, which was a necessity on the night that we dined. No reservations are accepted for brunch/lunch. If you are waiting for a table, Prune does have a small marble bar that seats about four people on brightly painted backless metal stools, but even those spots were full with diners eating full meals when we were there. In warmer weather, patrons can wait outdoors.
Prune opened 20 years ago near the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street in the East Village, just across Houston Street from the Lower East Side neighborhood. The diminutive space offers some free-standing marble-topped tables near the front door, other cozy tables that share a banquette on one side across from the tiny bar, and an open kitchen in the rear. In addition, there is one larger semi-private table located one flight down from the main dining room. There is a restroom on each level, and in the winter, the restaurant offers a coat check because space is at a premium. Antique mirrors do what they can to enlarge the room. Staff works well together like a well-oiled machine in the cramped space.
Prune serves French-inspired cuisine. As we perused the menu, our server delivered some crispy naan-like crackers to munch on. As starters, we shared the softly scrambled eggs on toast and the chicken liver on a slice of thick bread. For our main dishes, we ordered the duck (plated atop lentils and stewed tomatoes) and the lamb. We also shared a side order of Brussel sprouts, which were overcooked and unappealing visually (but still tasty). We passed on dessert, although the one that still haunts us is the shaved dark chocolate served atop crusty olive oil-drizzled bread.
We enjoyed our dinner at Prune; the food, service, and atmosphere made for a pleasant night.
Excellent quiet lunch off the beaten track
Stumbled across this place near our hotel, it was rammed on a Wednesday night so we tried it for lunch the following day. Very pleased we did. Server was Greg and he was great. Had a French 75 each to start, very well made. Shared the soup of the day, a version of posole, this was Delicious. Followed by the divolo chicken, which was tender and the sauce out of this world. Finished off with a butterscotch dessert. Would highly recommend this place if you are in the area.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful food, but with some concerns.
The place is tiny and intimate. The food is really top-notch and highly creative. Even at brunch they feature things like a Dutch style pancake stuffed with sauteed fruit, lamb sausage and oysters, and a Lower East Side appetizing plate of assorted smoked fish and breads. But there were two concerns I had, both of which are easily correctable. First, in the colder months they should invest in some doorway curtains or a small, temporary vestibule. Some of the people outside waiting apparently need three or four door-wide-open visits inside in chat with the hostess to get a seating status. The regular blasts of cold air are really annoying. Secondly, if you are going to mark-up a $3.50 small bottle of beer to $15, then at least have the courtesy to list beer prices on the menu as you do with the wine and cocktails.

My wife wanted to eat at Prune on one of our nights in NYC, and I'm certainly glad we did. We started with what was essentially a chicken liver mousse on toasted bread. I'm not much on chicken liver, but this was delicious and we both agreed that it was probably the best we have ever had. The chicory salad with Cambazolla cheese was great. Hard to imagine saying a salad is great, but this one was. For mains we had the lamb neck stew, which was flavorful and a bit spicy. The cod and mussels was an interesting dish -- I don't usually think of tarragon with seafood, but this worked quite well. The main dining room is certainly cramped, but that lends the compact space a certain energy. Service was excellent. Prune turned out to be our top meal on this trip.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous Evening!!!
We were in NYC from St. Augustine FL. I grew up in CT but had not been to NYC in long time. Our friends joined us and their son and his girlfriend live near Prune and made a reservation for the 6 of us. We sat down stairs, which was a perfect place for us to visit. The food was fabulous and the service was as well. We did not feel rushed even though it was a rainy Friday night with a line outside. The food was unusual but delicious with a good variety of choices. It was truly the highlight of our trip..good company, good food, and good service.

So, always very busy (you can't book Brunch) so arrive early at the weekend. I've eaten here before and is was tasty, even the Bloody Mary (which is one of the best you'll ever have (except too much ice)). Today, we were placed in the cellar, where people queue for the single toilet that's available, our food was, frankly, average. The bloody mary saved the day. Prices are acceptable.

Hands down best brunch in NYC! My husband and I were on a quest to find the best Bloody Mary and we found it!! It was super busy, but we snagged bar seats. The bartender was fabulous and the drinks were so well balanced. To top it off, we got a Red stripe beer back!
For mains, I got the fried oyster omelette. The oysters were fried to perfection and the omelette was delicate and soft. The spicy sauce with the powder sugar gave you that sweet/spicy sensation and I kept digging in for more. My husband had the sausages and oysters. The tomato sauce was a warm hug and the lamb sausage was so tender and flavorful that I had to order a side order.
As an avid Top Chef fan, I didn’t even know it was Ashley’s restaurant until I was there and recognized her! Now I love the place even more knowing that there is a badass female chef that owns it!
We will definitely be back!
Tiny Place, Intimate Experience, Famed Chef Delivers great Food
Gabrielle Hamilton made a name for herself on Iron Chef. The chef/owner and author of famed cookbooks delivers unusual food combinations with impressive presentation in their tiny spot in lower Manhattan. Check out the menu online to see the unusual offerings. For the main course my friend had the lamb while I had the roasted duck breast, which was amazing and plentiful--I took half home and gave it to a hungry friend who was grateful for these highest level leftovers. We sat near the door which was less noisy than the center of the small room. Get an early reservation and beat the crowds. Prices are affordable considering the artistry and quality of ingredients. Definitely an experience to remember.
