Everything was beyond amazing, and sisig was so delicious.
The tocilog was great as well. I love their champorado with the coffee ice cream. I'm obsessed with their food. Satisfying not just your stomach and palate but your ever hungry soul.

It's a Brooklyn favorite, a neighborhood fixture, beloved for years and by more than a few generations. It's also a poorly kept secret. The menu is always changing, per the cleverness and ambition of its head chefs, and the service always comes with a smile. It remains my favorite place for Jap Chae (with beef). Decor is warm, wood and bamboo. And desserts are always fun here. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

I came here with 3 other friends to celebrate a birthday. We ordered a bunch of food and shared it family style. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the japchae. The mango dessert was also amazing! It was a seasonal dessert and we loved it. We had some drinks as well. We were allowed to bring a bottle for a $20 corking fee which wasn't too bad. Overall a nice restaurant to try out for some yummy Filipino food!
Be the first to ReplyI have gone to Purple Yam twice, before the Covid lockdown.
And I remember that every dish we ordered were good. This is the first time back dining here after COVID. And unfortunately, it's hit and miss. I thought the Korean pancake was too thick and doughy, not at all like the Korean pancakes in K-town, which is thin, crusty on the outside but chewy in the inside, and full of seafood every bite. PY's Korean pancake had very few shrimps, and too thick in my opinion. The Sisig was bland, not enough salt, not enough taste. But the Torcino was great. We gobbled it down. The Curry goat taste good, but I feel the meat was not fresh off the butcher's block, but might have been cooked a while ago. The Kilimansi drink was ok. I've had it before, every time I came here. This time I felt it was a bit watered down. Inflation, perhaps.

The restaurant was very inviting and the wait staff was awesome. However the food was not so. If you are looking for traditional Filipino flavors, you are likely not going to find it here. Much of the flavors like the chicken adobo has been muddled down for to placate the neighborhood to the detriment of the dish. Halo Halo, a fun go to desert for Filipinos, came out looking like a pile of ice, smothered by a hodgepodge of random fruits and topped off by ube ice cream. This dish, usually served in a sundae cup or pint glass, is supposed show its ingredients layered with eye popping colors. Finally the lumpia, though fried perfectly, tasted more like sausage than a traditional lumpia. The one dish that saved my experience was the garlic fried rice. Overall I was leaning toward a score lower than a three but, as I highlighted above, the restaurant was inviting and the wait staff were great. Also, my wife enjoyed her Kimchi. If you are looking for the true bold flavors of the Philippines, I would suggest going to Queens, Manhattan or NJ and bypass this place. If not, you might enjoy this gentrified interpretation of Filipino cuisine.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious experience at purple yam yesterday.
The oxtail and the sisig was just chefs kiss. The lumpia was so fresh. My cousin absolutely loved the bagoong fried rice. And the lechon kawali and ukoy were so crisp and freshly fried. Finished with a halo halo that we all shared. Our waiter was fantastic as well. My group drinks a lot of water but he quickly refilled our bottles as we finished and everything was quickly served. Had a great time, highly recommend.

I live in Boerum Hill and didn't want to travel all the way to Woodside or the city for Filipino food but found this place on google maps. I was really craving halo halo and wanted to check this place out.Firstly, ambiance was great and service was pretty good for only having two servers running the whole restaurant. They were very kind and food came at a decent time.We had the calamansi juice as our drink (delicious), the sisig, ukoy, halohalo, and buko pie.The sisig was too oily and fatty and not as tangy as the ones I've had at other places. The ukoy was decent but I felt like it could have had more shrimp. The buko pie was ok, and the halo halo was underwhelming and less sweet than what I'm used to.Overall it didn't satisfy my craving for Filipino food and it didn't feel like home for me. I guess the trip to woodside might be worth it after all if I want to satisfy the craving.
Be the first to ReplyThe food, sounds promising but the tastes doesn't.
Some of the muscles we ordered wasn't cleaned properly. And the noodle dish we got was too salty if there wasn't so much soy sauce added it would have been pretty good. The mango tart dessert we got was the only thing I would go back for
Be the first to ReplyI've had a couple vegetarian dinners.
I often pair a side of kimchi fried rice with grilled eggplant kulawo. The japchae noodles are unusual -- good, and distinctly not like the Asian rice noodles I'm used to. For meat eaters, my wife loves the beef tapa. The desserts are awesome. The kalamansi tart and buko pie are our favorites. They don't just thump you over the head with sweetness, though they are both sweet. It's been too long since I've been here. But as the weather warms up, I'm looking forward to returning: the back yard is great, and the lime soju is a perfect summer cooler.

Cozy spot with both indoor and outdoor seating, serving up creative Filipino food. I came for lunch and got an interesting noodle dish that had a bunch of veggies & beef in it. It was very tastyI did not try any of their desserts, but it looked like they had a bunch of interesting choicesBib Gourmand in 20188

Really didn't want to go here because I'm not a big fan of Philippine food if in general. But we went anyway. The food was way better than I expected( edamame, ribs, salmon, some strange veggie dish ). One server doing everything - taking your order making drinks and basically everything else under the sun. But in this day and age somewhat normal. So service was spotty.

My family and I had an excellent experience dining at Purple Yam earlier this month. The owner/chef, Romy Dorotan, was very warm, hospitable, and genuinely cares about the quality of food he delivers to his guests. All of the food was excellent - from the sisig, to the lechon kawali, to the tempura-like ukoy - it was all very delicious and brought back memories of eating a good home cooked meal from our relatives back home. He was kind enough to sit with us and share a little background about his story and how he ended up in NY, and you can tell he is passionate about what he does. Highly recommend!

Definitely more fusion than authentic Filipino food but pretty good overall! Please be aware that there's only one (very nice!) server so customers should be patient.

5 stars is pretty accurate for this Michelin recognized restaurant, but I'm rounding up to 4.Came here for dinner last night and we were seated immediately around 6pm. The first 2 dishes that came out were the Mussels ($15) and Goat Curry ($18). Mussels were just okay (can be skipped) but the Goat Curry was definitely a sleeper dish. Did NOT expect it to taste that good! Definitely the best dish of the night. The mango chutney paired so well with the curry and the pancake wraps were the perfect texture. Highly recommend, and would get that again if I return. We had 2 more dishes coming but I'm guessing that's when things got very busy because there was an oddly long wait between them. We did say that it was ok if things came out one at a time, but the service got pretty slow which was a bit irritating. Eventually, the Lechon ($22) came out and it was... very fatty - probably like 75% fat and almost inedible. I was hoping it'd be 50/50 fat/meat at the very least. We ate the crispy bits and the bits of meat which were good but had to discard the fats. We did save and bring home the big bone, however, and plan to use it for a broth/soup. Then after some more waiting the Tocino ($17) finally came out. It reminded me of the Viet version of grilled porkchop rice - super homey and a true comfort dish. Quality-wise a bit average, but still satisfactory. Not sure if I'd order again, but I am curious about the chicken adobo since it's the Philippines' national dish. Overall an okay experience - I'd give them another shot.
