Best udon in the world
They have the best udon ever! I took my dad who was visiting from Korea and he loved it that we went three times within two weeks of our NYC stay. Service was fast and all the staffs were super nice. We recommend chicken tatsuta-age which is a fried chicken appetizer, niku udon, ebiten udon, and yasai kakiage. It may not look like it but portion was also huge that we were so full after our meal. We had reservations for two of out visits but we were also able to sit right away when we went right when they opened.

I wanna say that the food was GREAT. The tastes are authentic and mouth watering. Service was alright. But the hostess needs replacing. She was rude, stressed and didn’t have the reservation list under control. It got messed up and the people that arrived later WITHOUT a reservation got seated first while we had to wait. She first said to us: 45 min wait. Sure. Not a problem. 45 minutes turned into 2+ hours. Only stayed because my friend really wanted to eat here. We specifically requested a table inside. Got asked if we were ok taking a table outside after 1.5 hours wait time. I knew she accidentally gave away our table. Again, food amazing. Hostess needs to go.

When the aroma of Raku's Niku Udon first hits my nostrils, I am drawn to it like a crack fiend to a lit crack spoon. I immediately get transported to a hole in the wall noodle shop in Kyoto that is playing lofi bangers that Shazam can't pick up. Deep cuts only. I came here alone on my lunch break today as on a cold rainy day, my heart, mind, and soul immediately go to a Raku meal. This is a fantastic place for a solo meal to just come and enjoy your own company... while we are on the topic I get so annoyed when people be posting about how they are going on solo meals. Like can't you just go do that and not post about it? Was it really a solo meal if you gotta tell everyone about it?..... Well I guess I'm doing that now just in Yelp form ahahaha damn. The Niku Udon's spice level is just enough to make your nostrils run and let out one of those quick little "woooo" breaths out of your mouth, which is my idyllic spice level. The voluminous bowl, which consists of a light flavorful broth, silk noodles, beef short-rib, nori sansho chili oil, tendon, and honeycomb tripe is my hangover cure. Well that and a couple puffs of a pre-roll but that's neither here nor there. I let out an audible "wow" on my final sip of the broth, as my soul needed it. My soul been hella tired lately idk why. My only complaint is that $27 before tax and tip is just steep. It can't be a weekly occurrence for me, as much as I would like it to. Once a quarter vibes smh. But that just seems to be the price of doing business these days in New York. I've spent $27 a lot worse...... Still my favorite rainy day meal in NYC. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
Be the first to ReplyFar better than expectations - lives up to its hype
I am always skeptical of soup. Raman is tasty but often doesn't live up to its hype. Raku has too many happy reviews for me to expect anything good. However, I was wrong - the hot udon with beef was amazing. The umami flavor was wonderful. We also had the pressed mackerel sushi and it didn't need any soy sauce. Dipping it a little did add some depth to the overall flavor. The uni canapes reminded me that I don't really like sea urchin. However, if you are a fan, they were enjoyed by others at the table. I hope to go back and try the udon again.

It was really good and authentic udon. Their fried chicken appetizer was really good too and went great with your udon. I also recommend the yuzu sparkling juice.

This is udon on another level, probably the closest thing to authentic japanese udon outside of japan! must try when you are in the area

Really hits the spot if you want some udon. I'd say udon is hard to mess up, but there are some restaurants out there that can mess it up. Raku is not one of them, and their appetizers is a cherry on top.
Average food and menu not properly labeled
They don’t take a lot of reservations, so most spots are held for walk-ins. There was a one-hour wait, but they text you when your table is ready and hold your table for 10 minutes. The food is good but pretty average. There was nothing special about it. Beware that their menu is not properly labeled. I don’t think this restaurant understands what vegetarian and vegan even mean. They have fish items labeled as vegetarian, so be careful. If you order the udon noodles that are labeled as vegetarian, they will be made with fish broth unless you ask them to be made vegan. Our server could not confirm whether or not the udon noodles were made with eggs, so I don’t feel like they would be safe for vegans even without the fish broth. The only true vegan options on the menu are edamame, wakame salad (seaweed salad), and inarizushi (bean curd sushi).
Be the first to ReplyHuge Portion, Great Taste, Horrible Service
I visited Raku on a Wednesday night for dinner for two at around 7 p.m. Still, the restaurant was full, and the hostess (receptionist?) told us to leave a name and number and expected around one-hour wait time, which is fine and understandable and even made me even more excited about dining here.
However, the hostess was extremely rude when asking for my contact information. She was impolite and impatient when I was giving my name, which is a four-letter name, and told me to provide her with a whatever name. NO. It is my name, and if I can spell Raku, a four-letter word, the restaurant should be able to get my name correctly. This was such a disappointing first interaction with the restaurant that I wanted to walk out, but my friend insisted on dining there, so we did.
We ordered "niku" udon and "oyaku don" and both were delicious. We wanted Chawanmushi for appetisers, but the server told us the wait time is over 30 minutes. Disappointed again, I decided not to get the egg; however, the server got pushy and told me to order that dish. He only dropped it after the fourth time I said no: "I don't want the appetiser served after I finish my mains."
Overall, this was an awful visit, and I don't recommend anyone to spend money in this restaurant. Even though the food was quite good and the portion was huge, there are many Japanese restaurants in NYC with equally tasty food and much better service.
Simple but robust in taste
Simply intense flavorful udon soups. Their karaage chicken is also cooked to perfection with the chicken still totally juicy and just cooked! We loved the salad with seaweed too

Seems to be super popular for dinner. We did however manage to secure four seats around the bar area. Generous portions of hot and deliciously tasty udon. Vegan options available too, (I had the nameko). Great evening out!

Have been a huge fan of their LES restaurant ever since it opened shop few years back and their spacious new location is no different (also helps that it deflects some of the customers from the original shop). What I really appreciate about Raku's udons is their simplicity. Their light, umani-packed broth manage to never outshine the star ingredient: udon. The handmade Udon is so ever so firm and chewy, perfectly-dente in the world of noodles and pasta. Five star for both the staff and service. Could not ask for a better bowl of Udon in all of New York.
