Worth the ferry ride over to Red Hook
Red Hook, Brooklyn isn’t easy to get to. But it’s a really cool spot that makes you feel like you’ve found some sort of hidden island outside of Manhattan. And the easiest way to get there is probably going to pier 11/Wall Street. The ride is quick and then you’re within about 2/10 of a mile of this restaurant once you’re at the Red Hook terminal. This place is pretty popular, so reservations through Resy are recommended. They have a lot of outdoor seating, but indoor seating is more limited, with a long wooden bar and maybe 10 tables and a booth or two. They have a succinct menu, which includes fish n chips, oysters, salad, cavatelli. I had their well know tavern burger, which was quite good. I’ve had a lot of good burgers, so I’m not sure I could say it’s the best I’ve ever had (that honor probably belongs to The Golden Diner on the LES), but it was juicy, cooked just right, super hot and cheesy. Great char on the outside. The chips that came with it were fantastic! I really liked them—fries, but cut with a mandoline slicer. Hot and well seasoned. I also had the ham and cheese coquettes (please realize this is way too much food and you shouldn’t ask for both alone unless you want leftovers). They have gooey aged cheddar—so gooey and tangy I almost thought it was pimento cheese—and a crispy outside. They have a nice cocktail list to satisfy all tastes with a variety of spirits (gin, vodka, whiskey, tequila) with lots of interesting herbs, fruits, and accompaniments. I even had one interesting drink with charred onion. They also have wine and beer, Service was attentive. She gave great suggestions. The place had a laid back vibe. Worth the ferry ride!

This place calls itself a tavern. A tavern is a place where it is first come, first serve to have drinks or eat at the bar. Not this place. They reserve bar stools and they are uppity about it. The food is so overrated and the staff thinks they are doing you a favor. There are so so many wonderful places in Red Hook, Gowanus, Carrol Gardens...who needs this place ?The sheep go there. I'm sure most watch The kardashian's . It is the antithesis of Red Hook ! It is the opposite of what the neighborhood is. The place should be in Los Angeles.
Be the first to ReplyVery Good Food but Poor Service
Three of us ordered two iceberg wedge salads and three burgers. The salads arrived promptly and were delicious. The three hamburgers took an hour and a half to arrive. They were very good but, for the prices that are charged, there should be much better service. The bill for two salads, three burgers and one cocktail was almost $180 . For this price, the service needs to be excellent and not poor. Also, you could not hear yourself think as the inside was so packed. And, despite the incredibly high noise level, there was music playing. Why the extra noise???

It's unfortunate that such a great kitchen has the worst service you can get. After spending $26 for a fantastic burger, 36 oysters, martinis, bottles of wine, etc, the check, not requested, was tossed on our table while we still had food in our mouths. A leather wallet check landed on top of my fork and plate while I still had food in my mouth! After that, a rude server kept hovering over our table while talking to her colleague clearly about us. Earlier we had to ask for fork and knives, the wine list, and our food arrived before the drinks. A place that serves $1400 bottles of wine with cheeseburgers needs a better service staff.

Great food and service. Friendly staff. Make reservations ahead pretty popular otherwise you risk waiting.

Per the Red Hook Tavern's hours, the website posts Tu-Th 5-11p/F-Su 12-11p/closed Mondays (last seating at 9:30p). When I arrived with family on Sa 10/2/2021, 3:49p, this was not the case. We were greeted warmly by one of the owners, who told us that the hostess would seat us shortly. When she returned to the outdoor hostess station, she told us that the kitchen closed at 3:30p, would reopen at 5p, and suggested local eateries. Turned away from RHT, we ate at a nearby eatery. Should accurate hours of operation be posted on the website? Of course! Will I return to RHT? More than likely, but not in the immediate future.

Although everyone raves about the burger here. We loved everything else more. Wild boar pappardelle fantastic but come hungry its filling. The oysters are great skip the mignionette doesn't need it. Croquettes are yummy as well as blue cheese salad with bacon. Plus the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Ended up here on New Years Day through a variety of unforeseen circumstance. The service was friendly. They allowed my dog which right off the bat was a huge plus. The hot toddy’s were fantastic as the portable heater wasn’t yet plugged in for outside dining when I arrived and took a few minutes to warm up. The croquettes were fantastic. The burger was huge. I will certainly be back.

We came here on a slow night - able to get reservations for 9 pm, LOL!! The food is very good - we had the roasted fennel to start - which was delicious, and the the steak, which I think was a strip steak. I agree with the other reviewer that the steak is not comparable to a Peter Luger steak - while it was well cooked and had a delicious compound butter accompaniment, it was just not as flavorful as other steaks I've had. On the other hand, the creamed spinach was excellent, among the best I've had, I think the secret is more butter, less cream. We didn't get the burger which most of the other diners were having - it's enormous and looks delicious - maybe next time. If you like French wines, you'll like the wine list, but IMHO there were a limited number of US wines with offbeat blends - we ended up with an Italian red. The gelato the couple next to us shared looked delicious! Bottom line, we'll be back - if we can get a reservation!
Be the first to ReplyStill dreaming about that burger 🍔
Billy Durney’s ode to “old New York” is an instant classic. Stand out dishes included a divine burger, fantastic roast chicken and the wedge salad of my dreams. Pair it all with a lively natural wine program and I can see why there’s a line down the block nearly every night these days.

The owner of the Homestead, also in Red Hook, opened this restaurant where an old liquor store once stood. Be prepared to wait! I went there with my wife and son to celebrate his birthday. We waited an hour for 3 people. It might have been easier for 2 or 4 people to be seated. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Great wine list by the bottle. Ask the sommelier for assistance. The hamburger was fantastic. Appetizers and desserts were also good. Enjoy!

My husband and I were excited to try the Red Hook Tavern after reading the excellent review in the NYT. We went last night and we were not disappointed. We started with delicious cocktails, the bartender really knows her stuff. We shared the croquettes— small portion, but bursting with flavor in a mustard cream sauce. We both had the Tavern burger and it was perfectly balanced and cooked to perfection. The space is small and very charming. Make a reservation so you won’t be shut out. Oh, and the service was very friendly and attentive, too!
