The hype is real, everything here was freaking delicious.
And thank you Jesus finally a competent and friendly hostess in NYC, you guys are doing something right bc she treated me with respect and I felt appreciated from the moment I walked in!! That's extremely rare these days please give her a raise. The burger is all worth the hype and dammit I wanna go back and eat there immediately to have it again!! I'm getting rainbow cookies for dessert next time, compliments to the owner and the executive chef!

Stop reading this review, head to Red Hook Tavern, and get the burger. You will not regret it. Seriously, I didn't have "lunch" here, I had a religious experience. The burger gets a lot of hype, and I can confirm that all of it is deserved. They keep it nice and simple to let each component shine, and shine they do! Let's work our way from the outside in -- the bun is something special, toasty without being too crunchy, the perfect vehicle for this burger to get to your mouth. The meat is seasoned perfectly, you can taste the salt and cracked pepper with each juicy bite. I got mine medium, and it was easily the best burger patty I've tasted in years, maybe ever. The cheese is so decadent, and adds a nice sharpness to go with the heavy patty. And then the onions are a nice touch, adding some crunch to each bite without taking away from other flavors. The fries were also great, shaped more like chips than traditional sticks, and also seasoned really well. Charming old school interior, and it fills up quickly! Make a reservation or go at an off hour if you don't want to deal with a wait. Everything about this meal was memorable, I can't say enough about my experience here.
Be the first to ReplyHave to say, quite a disappointing experience.
We've wanted to have the burger at Red Hook Tavern for a while and it sadly did not live up to the hype. Ordered medium rare, arrived nearly 45 minutes later close to well done. If we get the dry aged burgers at Winner butcher or Ends meat, we frankly replicate the burger easily for $10 rather than $29. Would not make a point of going again. Salad was good as were the croquettes. But the fame for the burger is just hype. If you can't cook a medium rare burger in a spot known for burgers, why bother? Struggled to get the attention several times of our server who, while friendly, kept her eyes straight ahead rather than even glancing at her tables. Pretty 101 no-no. All in all, boo. We wanted it to be awesome. It's not.

Burger was a show stopper for sure, complemented by kind and attentive service. Definitely check this spot out (and make sure you secure a res)!
Be the first to ReplyIf you live in the neighborhood, this place feels snobbish
If you live in the neighborhood, this place feels snobbish relative to the other options -- its all business and sel that seat to the top toirist. How can you have a bar that is not welcoming? They only do reservations which doesnt leave for much of a local feel. I rarely (never?) write a poor review of this nature. Consider this more of a vote of admiration for all the other options in the neighborhood who actually make themselves accessible and make an effort to be part of the community. Please change your seating policy or let another hospitable proprietor fill your spot
Be the first to Reply$29 for a cheeseburger? Yeah.
..and it's worth it! This huge dry aged burger cooked to perfection is served covered with delicious American cheese, white onion on a lightly toasted bun and is accompanied by a generous amount of cottage fries and a pickle. It also comes with an incredibly friendly and efficient waitstaff! There was nothing we did not love though the ice cream sundae would be even better with a thicker (and a bit more) fudge sauce. On my next visit I look forward to to trying their steak tartare which I will only eat in restaurants who have earned my trust!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best tavern in all of New York City.
Great vibes and incredible food. They are famously known for their dry aged cheeseburger and believe me it did not disappoint. Bit out-of-the-way in red Hook Brooklyn however, definitely worth the trip. Book ahead.
Be the first to ReplyJust want to start off by saying yes, the burger is worth
Just want to start off by saying yes, the burger is worth it. Best burger I've had in my life. Although, the night started on a bad note- Me and my parents had a Sunday reservation for 645. We got there on time and our table had a family sitting down with their entrees just being cleared. The host simply said it would be at least a 15 minute wait, no apology or anything. When the family finally finished, there was no rush getting the table cleaned and set for us. We got seated 30 minutes after our reservation. The server offered us free croquetes at least, but the host was inattentive and dismissive. The service when we were sitting was great through. The food was absolutely mind blowing. From the mouthwatering burger, the chicken, the fish and chips, the croquettes, the capacola and the wedge, it truly all blew us away. I want to come back and try the pastas. I would give five stars for food but the hiccup in the beginning brought it down.

My partner wanted the best burger in NYC for his birthday dinner so I took him here- and it did not disappoint! We are both foodies and have eaten out together at a ton of places across the city- this one tops them all! I got a mint Julip to drink at the waiters recommendation and it was absolutely fantastic! To start, we ordered the potato and ham croquettes. We were so blown away by them that we asked for a second order. I grew up eating my grandmothers potato croquettes that she would hand make- these topped those! For our entrees, I got the roasted chicken and my partner got the burger. The chicken was so good that I was picking it up with my hands to eat it off of the bone. My partner said his burger was outstanding. I also adore the decor of this place. The inside is extremely cozy. It's the perfect spot for a date or to meet friends for dinner. Their bathrooms were also extremely clean and smelled incredible. I can't recommend this place enough. We agreed that this has been our favorite bite in the city so far (and I've lived here for 8 years).
Be the first to ReplySo let's start by how difficult it is to get a reservation
So let's start by how difficult it is to get a reservation here . Why ? There's only maybe 10 tables inside . Weather permitting and you can withstand the cold & rain you can sit in the outdoor area they built. Weekend menu much smaller which would be fine . We had to order any appetizers and meal all at one time. Received the ham & cheese croquettes?? No taste other than the oil it's cooked in and SALT!! Next received the French onion soup a a whopping price of $18!! Steep. Well another disappointment, soup was flavorless no cheese on top of soup but somewhat melted on side of a smaller size cup. Definitely was missing something and seemed to have some type of vinegar taste in the back. NOT GOOD AT ALL and no way worth $18 !! From this point we waited over 45 min for 2 burgers as we watched other tables seated after us receive their food before us. Waiter never visited the table during all this.finally got his attention to ask where the burgers were and when he walked back after supposedly checking very small portion of tables he walked right passed us never gave us an update . He clearly forgot our order. a manager approached me to kinda apologize for it taking sooooooo long with the excuse there is just so much room on the grill. The size of the grill isn't the problem !! I explained that many other people who were seated way after us have already received their food ! He seemed to be somewhat annoyed by what I said but was just stating a fact. Everyone seemed to get different service and different attention was given. We received none. Finally got the burger which was good. Way better places and food out there . Don't waste your time . Won't be back anymore .

Red Hook Tavern in Red Hook is an iconic pub serving one of the best burgers in NYC. We came for lunch to try this fabled burger for ourselves. We started with the ham croquettes to whet our appetizer served with a dijonaise and wedge salad served with a thick slice of bacon. Now for the main event...the dry aged burger was served, juices flowing, with melty American cheese and atop a decadently buttered bun and raw white onion to help cut the richness. This is indeed one of the best burgers we've ever had the pleasure of devouring and we understand why many feel compelled to make the pilgrimage to this eatery. We finished off with the rainbow cookies which were moist and rich with marzipan flavor. Make a day trip out here and enjoy some great local breweries, waterside views and a damn good burger
Be the first to ReplyThe dry aged cheeseburger was beefy, fatty, funky, and big.
The bun was soft and buttery. It's just a delicious burger that you must go try.The gelato was just ok. Tasted like ice cream and wasn't particularly smooth or fluffy as I prefer. The rainbow cookies were dense and moist and almond liquery. Quite good.
Be the first to ReplyI went to this establishment and was met with racism.
My friend and I walked in and sat at the bar. We were told that the tavern closes at 3:30pm and was gven a suggestion to eat somewhere else. It was not 3:30 yet.
Be the first to ReplyYou already know, but if you don't know, now, you know
You already know, but if you don't know, now, you know --they hype is in fact real and deserved. From food to drink to service to vibes this is a serious 10/10 no notes experience. But because this is Yelp here are some notes:You probably should make a reservation, unless you live nearby and are ok with hanging out for a bit. And if that's the case head down the block and across the street to Brooklyn Ice House and have a few while you wait. You are going to spend some money here. But your experience could go many ways. This can be an anniversary dinner, a quick bar situation, or a dinner with your parents when they're in town. Which is why you'll see people dressed every which way. Be casual or be fancy. The music will make you feel dancey (sorry I had to). Although I said quick above, you should carve out some time here if you're getting any of the entrees. The raves all come deservingly for the burger; but the roast chicken especially in the winter is the way. I would only be happier if there were bangers and mash, as those potatoes and gravy are fucking delicious. If you're a vegetarian the exquisite French Onion soup ain't for you, but for any meat eaters in your party, get it. Immediately. The servers and bartenders here are darling sweet baby angels. Tip them accordingly, and then think about it and tip them more. Space is tight so be prepared to be close to your neighbors. Only a few spaces in Red Hook, through all of its changes (gentrification) in the recent years, have maintained their neighborhood vibes. Red Hook Tavern is one of those spots. Go on and have yourself a simply wonderful time.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
They do all the things right. When I say all the things, I mean ALL THE THINGS. But here are a few specifics:1. Meat. The burger is the best in NYC. At $29, it fucking better be, and it truly is. At a time when everyone and their mother is doing smashed double patties (because everyone can, it isn't that difficult), this thick, juicy, perfect-every-goddamn-time dry aged burger is an absolute pleasure. Laid on a crisp, buttered bun with sliced white onion and American cheese completely and exquisitely melted across the entire visible surface, it needs no condiments. It doesn't even need the incredible wedges it used to be served with, nor the excellent cottage fries that seem to be its regular accompaniment now. It needs nothing. It just is. I've eaten it at the bar, I've eaten it at a table, I've eaten it at the tables on the street, and I've taken it out to go eat in the park down the street by the water, during the height of the pandemic when we weren't allowed to eat in restaurants. This is as good as burgers get. I do not say this lightly. I fucking LOVE burgers, and this is the one I want to eat on my deathbed. It may hasten me getting there, but I don't care. Red Hook Tavern will also prepare a steak as perfectly as you've had anywhere. There's always a special, and it's also going to break the bank, but if you need a beautiful slab of beef you can't go wrong. 2. Service. Every single person I've dealt with here has been on point. Specific shout outs go to the bartenders, and the sommeliers (maybe I'm partial to people that give me alcohol). I believe my favorite of the latter was named Rebecca, and she was pregnant not too long ago. Now I know that you can still trust a pregnant somm, so I've got that going for me. Speaking of...3. Booze. The winelist is excellent. The martinis are perfect (although they aren't the buckets you get at most old steakhouses, they are perfectly housed in their non-martini glasses - a choice I can respect). 4. Non-meat. We've had oysters, and shrimp cocktail, and the stellar country ham croquettes. We've had salads, and pastas, and the fish and chips. I've never been sad about any of it. 5. Atmosphere. It's a tavern I want to spend time in. I'd live in here if I could afford it. My only complaint is the barstools are a bit uncomfortable for me, personally. Something about them cuts my circulation off, but I imagine that's by design so I don't sit here and drink until I order another burger. Basically, Billy Durney can do no wrong. Between this and Hometown, he's responsible for 95% of my meat consumption in Red Hook, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Come here. Or don't. I don't care. I'm tired of not being able to get a table anyway.
Be the first to ReplyJust had my first meal here and I am impressed.
The burger lives up to the hype. The fries were thick and crisp. Even the pickle had a unique, smoky flavor. I finished it off with a hot fudge Sunday which was also excellent. Contrary to some other reviews, I found the staff friendly and accommodating. Attractive and dressed nicely as well.
Be the first to ReplyWe got a round of burgers for the entire table and oysters
We got a round of burgers for the entire table and oysters to share. The oysters come with either 6 or 12 and we opted for the 6. They were super fresh and we loved the tangy pairings it came with. The burger was pretty solid and super filling. It was a bit too salty, but overall a very very juicy patty. Loved the circular fries!

Everyone I told I was coming here had the same response: "The burger?" The answer is yes. It rocks. It's as good as its reputation. Already planning my next trip. My only asterisk is that I wish the fries were crispier. We had the croquettes to start which were nice and tasty. Sundae and rainbow cookies for dessert were delicious too.
Be the first to ReplyIt's not you, it's me.
This burger made me realize that I'm probably not a fancy or thick burger kind of guy. Worth trying because someone else might like it, but I don't think I will be visiting again.
Be the first to ReplyWe were excited when Red Hook Tavern opened as regulars at
We were excited when Red Hook Tavern opened as regulars at Hometown BBQ for years and having moved into the neighborhood a few years ago. Simply put we could not be more disappointed. The food is fine but the service is poor and attitude of the staff is rude and unwelcoming. The worst part is we have given Red Hook Tavern five chances just in case we caught an off night, but the treatment was the same each time. Our most recent experience was a perfect example. We rushed to make sure we were on time since the last time we showed up 10 minutes late they did not honor our reservation. Upon arrival we were told it would be 10-15 minutes even though it was clear that no table was close to finishing. We were told to order drinks from the overcrowded front end of the bar while we wait even though half the bar seats were open (told not to stand there). After ordering a drink I was rudely told to move from another staff member to by the door, only to be told moments later by another staff member to move again. After 20 minutes, we were told it would be another 15 minutes as our table was supposedly getting the check - when we asked which table it became clear that this table was not getting a check but first ordering dessert. Despite now being 30 minutes late accommodating our reservation with no table near ready, we were not offered anything for the inconvenience other than being rudely shuffled from one spot to another despite plenty of open bar seats. When we said we were going to go somewhere else (which we did), zero effort was made to make us feel welcome or to ask us to stay. Sadly this is the same experience each time we have visited and I have heard similar complaints from friends in the neighborhood. We are truly sad this has turned into another pretentious, quasi celebrity restauranteur spot rather than a welcoming neighborhood tavern than espoused to be. We will not go back.
Be the first to ReplyLitterallt the rudest group of people ever.
While the food is also good, I find that I can find as good food at many similar restaurants in the neighborhood. Every time I have come, the servers are rude. I am constantly sat 20-45+ minutes after my reservation time. Servers are rude and pushy.
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance here might be one of my favorites in the city.
Wood and wallpaper always work for me. Good cocktails, and good food. I'll be back to try the burger next time.
Be the first to ReplyUghhh I cannot get enough of this place.
The food is absolutely superb. The burger is probably one of the best you'll find in NYC. I finally had the wedge salad - and that piece of bacon is arguably the best bacon I have ever put in my mouth. The wine selection is excellent. Service is phenomenal, all the staff are so friendly and affable. There are few better things in life than to enjoy glasses of wine at this establishment while noshing on some of the most delicious food in the city. Last time I was there, Billy Durney was still going table to table making sure everything was good and filling people's water glasses - I think it says a lot about a business when the owner is still so vested and close to the customer.A+++. Can't wait until my next stop here when I'm in Red Hook!
Be the first to ReplyHonestly, I'd go back just to get waited on by Grahm.
I heard the burger was good so I ordered it and it was. Wedge salad was very tasty. I'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyThe ham croquettes leaves you saying where is the ham.
? The food was extremely mediocre although the kale salad was very good. I have to say that all of the ingredients and everything in the food was very fresh and very high-quality and you could tell they were really trying it's just when you put it all together you just say where is the taste and everything was kind of just OK. It's a very nice place and of course it's right in the heart of red Hook. You will notice that all of the outdoor fans in the patio were not working they were very rustic a nice looking they just didn't work to cool you off on a hot day. A bit overpriced for what you get it's really packaged well but it's a sheep in wolves clothing.
