Carl Nielsen er et Fantastisk sted
We arrived in a very cozy atmosphere, we had booked a table and were very kindly shown to the table. Everything was simple, clean and nice. It was my first visit to the restaurant and the menu looked very exciting. It was pretty much everything on the card that I wanted to eat. We started with Carl Nielsen's herring plate. 3 pieces of different herring, all of which were amazing in taste and appearance. Then we took the Coldings Tartar which was also very, very delicious, with a lot of flavor. We had to have more, so we ordered Beetroot Tartar, which was very fresh in taste, almost fruity and very delicate. We finish with a piece of freshly roasted cod roe, which was on the menu that day and this time too it was a huge experience, a very nice piece. We then finished with pancake with homemade parfait, which was poured over with Sambuca and set on fire! It was a renewal of a pancake which was very delicious! Everything we got was fantastic and we will definitely be coming back to Carl Nielsen!!

Carl Nielsen was recommended by our hotel as the best restaurant for upscale Danish smørrebrød. What a treat. Everything was presented beautifully and was perfectly flavorful. The herring 3 ways was a delight, and service was impeccable.

Even though I am Danish, I feel compelled to write a review in English for Restaurant Carl Nielsen here on Tripadvisor just as I have done on a similar platform. Simply because it is so amazing that it would be a shame for international food lovers to miss it. I am part of a group who are all enthusiastic about smørrebrød. For more than 20 years we have had two annual visits to the best smørrebrød restaurants in Copenhagen. Fortunately, there are many fantastic restaurants to choose from. But in our view, Restaurant Carl Nielsen is at the very peak. The take on smørrebrød at Restaurant Carl Nielsen is what I consider modern and the presentation just beautiful. I have been to the restaurant four times and tasted my way through the better part of the menu. Still, I find it impossible to name my favorite pieces/dishes. For anyone with an interest in trying out Danish smørrebrød, I highly recommend stepping away from the crowded places in Nyhavn and give Restaurant Carl Nielsen a chance. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Early January - together with my aunt, uncle and cousin - we celebrated a late Christmas, as - due to illness - we were not able to meet at Christmas time. None of us had previously attended Restaurant Carl Nielsen, but I had read several very good reviews, hence it was time to try the food for ourselves. The restaurant is situated in one of the charming old buildings in the center of Copenhagen. We were seated at a nice window table, and quickly we were offered something to drink, and the menus were handed over. The waiter recommended two pieces of "smørrebrød" (open sandwich), but first we were treated to an "amuse bouche": a cup of very intense and delicious prawn bisque. Three of us chose the herring plate with three different kinds of herrings including one with flavours of licorice. I would never have thought, that herring and licorice would match, but the licorice was not overpovering, yet a very nice companion to the fish. Great to discover new combinations. In all three versions the fish was firm and delicous, just as it should be. The fourth chose egg and shrimps, which also seemed to be to his liking. For our second piece of "smørrbrød", we all chose different dishes: fried cod with remoulade, tartar (the restaurant serves two different classic tartars as well as a vegetable version) topped with an egg yolk, which was red (due to beetroot color), and sweetbread terrine (which was the restaurant's version of a very classic Danish terrine usually made for Christmas) - however this one was on a completely different (higher) level, and my aunt, who enjoyed the dish, was over the moon! I chose the deer (served with mushrooms, onion compote and small red berries), which was very delicious. Portions are indeed generous, and we couldn't eat more, even though we would have liked to try more from the appealing menu. We finished with coffee and a small cake. Available are several kinds of beer as well as a quite diverse "snaps" (eau de vie) selection with some Danish classics as well as several options, if you are a little more adventurous. The two waiters were very kind and made us feel at home. We enjoyed our lunch, and on our way out we talked about returning. Thank you to all of you in the restaurant for a lovely lunch.

This treasure is just off the touristy Nyhavn area on a side street. Loads of atmosphere and nwely refurbished. 3 kinds of herring is outstanding. A must to have. Served with the Carl Nielsen beer and local akvavit. Have a few! A bit short of staff when full, so relax…
