Restaurant Nisei San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year

Food: Alright Service: Stellar Ambiance: Sophisticated This review is for their New Years Eve Special Dinner menu for $275pp (not including the 20% service charge). My partner took me here for my birthday and it was definitely a splurge so we had high hopes and unfortunately we weren't impressed. The service was exceptional and we were even able to order cocktails from their sister bar, Iris, next door to our table during our dinner. It was a nice touch that Chef David served some of the courses to us himself and spent time chatting with other customers. The restaurant was decorated with balloons for nye and we were seated at a table that allowed us to see the rest of the restaurant along with a peek into the kitchen. The special nye dinner menu was not posted online prior to the actual dinner and was advertised as being abundant in truffle, wagyu, king crab, and caviar. Despite having to pay up front and not knowing the exact menu, my partner was willing to take the risk and was excited to make the reservation based on his research and the accolades of the chef and staff. However, we were disappointed and found ourselves searching for something more that was missing. In fact, my partner was still hungry and was let down to hear from the server that we were moving onto the dessert courses already. My favorite dish was the pine nut miso soup which only ended up having 3 shaves of truffle on top. The ideas were promising, but just didn't deliver for us as some elements on the plate seemed disjointed as well as the dessert courses that missed the mark and didn't seem to make for a cohesive menu overall. So in the end, we definitely don't think it was worth the money as we weren't blown away by any of the dishes, but if you're really wanting to try Nisei, go for their regular tasting menu instead of one of their special menus.
This has been one of my favorite Michelin star restaurants
This has been one of my favorite Michelin star restaurants by far - the service, ambiance, presentation and taste of food were all up to par & beyond. When I say the food was delicious, I mean DELICIOUS- each & every dish; so much so, I can't even pick a favorite. This is a special place that will leave an everlasting memory for sure - well worth the visit. Whether an anniversary, date night or bday, this should be very high on your list of places to choose.

Dined here at Nisei on 3/7/2024 - One of the best dining experiences I have had in recent memory. The food and presentation were excellent. The service from the staff especially Natalie and Sophia our servers were outstanding. I wish I could remember the name of the other amazing lady as well - all of them were attentive and caring. The sommelier Ian was knowledgeable and engaging, suggesting a delicious Riesling which I enjoyed so much. Last but not least, Chef David was gracious and super attentive - so talented and yet humble, relatable and kind (also so young to have a Michelin star in his impressive CV). The space was warm and inviting while providing comfortable and ample distances between tables. We will definitely return!!
Every creative, unexpected dish Nisei served surprised me.
Yet once I tasted them, I knew they were exactly how they should be. The dinner expanded what I understand can be done with food. It is clearly rooted in Japanese tradition, yet feels cutting edge and contemporary. 3,4 or 5 different flavors are perfectly balanced within different dishes on a sort of journey across the palate. You can tell the staff love the food by their passion when describing the dishes. It's clear they are treated well and are proud to be part of the restaurant's mission. I felt taken care of at a level I expect from the highest quality restaurants in the world. Get a reservation before they have 3 Michelin stars and it's impossible to get a table!!!
Love our experience here.
Staff was so accommodating and warm whenever they came to our table. They were so knowledgeable about each dish and each question we had. Love that everything had a little story. The restaurant is small and dark but the tables were lit just right. I enjoyed this restaurant and want to try their menu during a different season.
First time and wow! Stunning flavors and textures.
Warm, knowledgeable service. Cool and relaxed atmosphere. If you want to splurge for an amazing meal, this is the place to do it.

One of the best Japanese dishes I ever had! The staff the very friendly and knowledgeable. The chef came to introduced himself and I got the seat in front of the kitchen. I was amazed how small the kitchen was and how they efficiently attend to the customers. Every dish was amazing, the food speaks for itself..

We had the best culinary experience at Nisei! It was a special occasion celebrating my niece's birthday and she was treated to a perfect night. It was a complete dining adventure with exquisite food, delightful presentation, and warm and inviting hospitality. Some of the highlights of our meal were caviar with sourdough mochi, pine nut miso soup, tempura anago, smoked squab, and Hayashi abalone. We all had different favorites but agreed upon how delicious everything was. We were honored by two visits by Chef David which really adds a nice touch. It's great to meet the creator of this gastronomic entertainment. Lastly, I must commend the staff. I believe they are an integral part of the Michelin star and stars in the future. They are effortlessly professional without being stuffy. We don't always encounter that in fine dining and it is so much appreciated. Danielle, you're the best! Your communications and orchestrations makes me want to hug you and that's what we did :)
Another fantastic fine dining experience in San Francisco.
A set of small and beautiful, flavor-first dishes fusing Japan with California. However, subtlety was the key in each. My friend said the pine miso soup was the best soup he had anywhere. The scallops reminded me of a similar dish at Kiln. The fried eel tempura in eel bone broth (eels have bones?) with gooseberry and lime was my favorite. We ended with a citrus rich palette cleansing dessert, a cheese and aged fruit course, a "good fortune" digestive tea, rum flambΓ©ed pumpkin flan, and some traditional Japanese sweets that you could choose from a cart. The ambience is not my favorite but the servers were all excellent.

First meal in SF, and I'm so happy and thankful it was at Nisei! I opted for the prix fixe tasting menu. I was amazed by the creativity, presentation, and thought behind every course. Every flavor combo was intricate and carefully crafted. And just when I thought a bite couldn't be topped, I was blown away by the next. Like the rarity of perfect pitch to a musician, Chef David is actually a genius with flavor and presentation. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to try his latest revisions/enhancements of a dish which turned out to be one of my favorites of the night - scallops over brown butter butternut squash. I also anticipate myself dreaming about the pine nut miso soup. I have no words but simply amazing. Everything was exquisite. Also, service was impeccable. Solo dining can be nerve wrecking but not at Nisei! From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was greeted as if I were family. Ngl I was lowkey shocked Ian knew my name but I quickly gathered myself when I remembered my name was on the reservation. Throughout the night, Ian, Ruben, and Chef David (the man, the myth, the legend) shared little anecdotes of the stories behind the decor, the dishes, and the inspiration - I loved listening to the stories. They were so engaging and so fun to talk to! I don't know if my next meals could ever top this experience. And sorry, no photos because I wanted to play it cool like I fine dine all the time and wasn't a noob.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response⦠how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been βmatchedβ with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

Give the best answerVirtual Name & Email on reservation
Hi Community,
I am new to this site and just recently bought a reservation here. I noticed that on the reservation page, it is booked under a random name and a virtual email address.
I can't find any button to change either the name or the email for this reservation I bought. So, should I just say that random name when I arrived at the restaurant? Not really sure about the procedures.
