So this is exactly what I want when it comes to Asian
So this is exactly what I want when it comes to Asian fusion food. The chef and the cooks really know what they are doing. We got the 9 course tasting menu and the everything was just full of flavor and goodness. Our server was just amazing helping us with the menu and explaining everything to us. The ambiance is dark and hip with pops of light that keep you engage with the atmosphere. Really a perfect spot for a date night.

Food was awesome, staff was very attentive and they even customized my dessert for my 30th birthday! Setting was very clean and private feeling with mood lighting and a beautiful bar display. Would definitely love to go back again! We chose the 9 course set menu and really enjoyed the pork belly, wagyu shooter, and brown butter mochi dessert! My husband also had an awesome Ube Lemonade!
Be the first to ReplyVery creative.
Great ideas with the creations but keep them as ideas. Since it's an "experience" type of dining, don't expect to ask for anything you're craving. Best to review the menu first before booking a reservation. Suggestion: bring your own wine if you're an enthusiast. Corkage fee applies. Service is great. Ambience is meh
Be the first to ReplyThe food at this place is outstanding.
We had the 9 course menu, which is $65 and quite a lot of food. Not all dishes were equally good, but many of them were truly outstanding, like buttermilk chicken, the larb salad, the hamachi crudo, and the fois gras shooter (the salmon shooter was underwhelming, just dry and salty). The price of $65 is actually a steal for this quality of food, and the 5 stars is for the food. However, the ambience leaves something to be desired. While our waiter was very good, It seems he also worked in the kitchen . The interior decor is neither cozy nor elegant. With not many customers it just seemed a big empty space. I think this restaurant need to decide if they want to be a high end eatery (for which the food qualifies) or a good value place that mainly attracts through the price.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic spot.
9 course prefix was so delicious. Creative and so yummy. Looking forward to trying some other menu items. FYI. Do not let the exterior fool you. Inside is very welcoming and so is the staff.

The food here is a tour de force of flavor and precise execution. It is hard to tell from the outside that the interior is avant garde and upscale. Loved the lights. We had the tasting menu ($65) and it does not disappointment. This is a place for special occasions or special guests. It made me so happy that Kaimuki can offer this kind of experience. The "waiter" started in the kitchen 3 years ago and progressed to sous chef and now is the face of the dining adventure. He knows the food, the flavors and the creative process. Friendly and unpretentious. Loved every moment! We will be back.

As a vegan, I have accepted that certain restaurants can't accommodate my dietary restrictions. XO was clear about their menu's accommodations, but after having my coworkers served. The Chef and servers took the kindest extra step to create a vegan entree that I absolutely loved! It was such an unexpected and kind gesture, and I would recommend the restaurant to everyone!
Be the first to ReplyI found this place on one of Yelp's top restaurants list
I found this place on one of Yelp's top restaurants list and honestly the bunnies sold me. I made a reservation day-of through Yelp and it was pretty simple. The area looked really sketchy and the parking lot only had about 5 spots? It was dark, the lot looked a little dirty and there was a hobo sitting right outside; that's how sketch it looked. When I entered at Sunday 7:30pm, there was NO ONE. I had the whole place to myself :) private dining. The inside looked fancy and well lit. We were seated by the wall and the greeter/waiter was very polite. He checked in frequently and answered all my weird questions. Menu on QR code. We got the $65pp 9 course meal with a Korean Fried Chicken substitute which was an extra $3 to sub 1 of the fried chickens, and a Ube Lemonade. Let's break down the courses.. Ube Lemonade $15 - Honestly this should have been like $12-13 considering there was no alcohol in it and it was like in a tall 8oz(?) glass with a lot of ice. This was a tasty drink to get and it's different. Because I wasn't offered a straw, I had no idea that all the Ube was at the bottom so initially I only tasted lemonade. I would suggest to get a straw so you can mix it, it'll taste much better. Hamachi & Fake Crab Salad Cannoli - This was the first plate offered and it was the best. The cannoli was perfectly crispy and all the flavors worked really well. I also really like imitation crab meat so I could've easily ate 3 of these. Hamachi Sashimi Crudo, Miso Sesame Vin, Aioli, Orange, Shishito - This was also a really good dish. The hamachi was fresh and went perfectly with the sauces. I don't normally eat raw fish but this is definitely something I would get again. Thai Beef Larb Salad, Thai Aioli, Puffed Rice - I personally didn't fancy this dish because it looked so basic but it had decent taste. Crunchy and refreshing salad. My partner liked it. Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Tzatziki, Cilantro and Korean fried chicken sub +$3 - They were bringing back the Korean fried chicken and offered to sub one of our plates for an extra $3 so I was able to try both flavors. I love KFC so definitely I'm going for it. Personally, I think it was a good choice to sub but not happy that I had to pay an extra $3. I really liked the sauces and I would suggest getting it. Both chickens were fried nicely. I'm not a huge fan of the Indian flavors on the original chicken plate. This was Indian curry and I don't think it worked well with the fried chicken. Grilled Kalbi Pork Belly Ssam, Gochujang, Pickles - Slightly sweet and spicy and this was tasty. It was pretty thin and I'm curious how many slices they give for 1 person because we had an odd number of slices... I didn't particularly like the pickled vegetables because it was sour but my partner did. Shrimp & Calamari Seafood Pancake, Glaze - This tasted like your usual pancake, nothing special. It felt like there was a lot of batter. Also it's weird that they cut you a corner like what did you do with the other half of the pancake? Prob should just do small circle batches but maybe presentation? Hot Rice Shooters, Sesame, Scallion: foie gras and wagyu - This was the most basic white rice + meat dish. It feels a little bit scammish and I think they can elevate this by adding another element so it's not so plain feeling. The wagyu and foie gras were fine but we thought it was a little overcooked because it tasted extra charred like close to burnt. Brown Butter-Bunny-Butter Mochi - This was my absolute favorite and so glad I brought myself here for this. The plating was cute and thoughtout. It tasted soooo gooood. The bunnies were chewy and the crumbs were so good. The little sauce tied it all together very nicely. Do yourself a favor and order this if you aren't doing the 9 course. A-5 Salted Wagyu Fat Caramels - This was a unique candy at the end of the meal. Basically your wagyu juices mixed into a caramel. Though it was special, I don't find myself drooling over it. They could work on the presentation though because it's just weird they tossed the 2 candy wrappers on a plate lol. I thought it was a great experience and the waiter was awesome. It came out to almost $100 per person post tax tip and 3% CC surcharge fyi. I get they're trying to be upscale but is that 3% to use credit card super necessary? I would come back to either order the stuff I liked separately or when they changed the set menu.

When we arrived there were two parties, no one greeted us and we had to wait to be acknowledged. When one of the servers noticed us standing there waiting, he asked if we had reservations, we said no then he told us that the other server had to seat us. Menu is via QR code. Food came fairly quick, tasty but two of the items were very salty. Don't bother with the XLB. When we received the check, I placed my credit card, the server said that there's a 3%! Paid with cash instead. For a while place that is trying to be fancy, they are nickel and diming their customers.
Be the first to ReplyIt was a very good dining experience here at XO.
We went during a time when it wasn't too busy and I was able to enjoy the decor and take photos (lol). Do not be fooled by the 9-course dinner. I was feeling myself getting full by the end... It's a lot of food. I guess the 9-course never changes? It was nice to try once but to come back just to eat the same 9-course omakase is something I would think about before coming to dine in again. I think the bunny rabbit mochi was extremely cute. Mostly everything on the course was solid. Honestly it felt like a dream because the food was all good and then as soon as we finished more food was coming. I felt like the parents that turned into pigs in Spirited Away LOL. Nevertheless it's got a nice dark, luxurious vibe. My curiosity has been satisfied since I would always pass by and never know what's going on in there lol
Be the first to ReplyMy partner and I went on a rare date to Restaurant XO.
It was highly recommended by some friends. What I liked: -the chef was consulted about the gluten free menu and options were provided -the Ube Lemonade cocktail was sweet, but dangerously good -the Thai larb salad and hamachi were fabulous! -service was attentive -the restaurant is clean and beautifully appointed. -easy parking which is a big deal in Kaimuki. What I didn't like -what the heck is this one bite hot rice shooter thing. For $14, I felt like I should have gotten more than a tiny bite of beef or fish and a tablespoon of rice. Flavor was good but not top notch for that price point. Rice essentially costs nothing, so that was one expensive bite of meat. -bunny mochies were yummy! But I'm not sure that the stuff sprinkled next to them was gluten free. -wagyu caramels. These were a rather expensive miss for me. They were interesting, but overly rich and fatty. My stomach still clenches to think about it. -the beeria tacos were marked gluten free, but were apparently made with actual beer, which is not gf. Yeah, I'm not sure. Conclusion: For the price point, it's pretty spendy for my blood. With the limited gf options, I felt like I had to order a lot of the same to feel full on the portions. For a special date night with no food allergies and if you have a small appetite and a large wallet, enjoy. It really is a cool place.

We got the 9-course set meal and had a great experience! Some very clever dishes and delicious, overall! Plus, great service. Also, the two mocktails on the menu were really delicious and had some more subtle flavor to them, which is sometimes hard to come by.

Stopped in for dinner and had their pre-fixe 9-course menu and some drinks. All of the dishes were delicious. Our waiter was attentive and everything came out super fast. Their dessert was especially creative with a mouse-shaped brown butter mochi and wagyu homemade caramels.
Be the first to ReplyThank you Kenneth for helping me with rectify the situation.
It was extremely helpful and I can't wait to be able to visit this establishment soon. Terrible!!! I called to cancel and they still charged my card. I have phone records. They are crooks l!!!

BEWARE! Save your cash and your tastebuds!! Seemingly fake reviews drew us to XO; way too many 5 star reviews without the quality to back them up. We were the only people at the restaurant on a Thurs night. The restaurant is full of deep freezers and the main dish (pork belly) was absolutely inedible and the chicken wasn't much better. The first 3 courses were a hit or miss...mostly the latter. One of the courses was bread. Another was a couple small pieces of lettuce with some fixings. The rabbit dessert had a cute concept, but also was lacking in overall flavor. They provide you with a caramel which was made with beef fat. I like beef fat when I cook so I tried it. OMG, it was disgusting. Buyer beware: there is a $50 / PP penalty for cancelling reservations. That's probably how they stay in business.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best dining experiences I've ever had.
The food was amazing, plentiful and well thought-out. The staff were also super friendly and passionate about the food. I also love the mission of the restaurant. Great experience for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyAn amazing experience all around and a true foodie moment
An amazing experience all around and a true foodie moment of our Honolulu trip.Tasting menu was extensive, by far the largest (in terms of food on plate and portion sizes) we've ever had. Each dish layered delicious flavors of freshness. With the explanation of the chefs, everything was so well thought out. We opted for enhancements to get the A-5 Wagu and Duck Breast - definitely worth every penny. The wagu is sold per ounce, so it does add up, but melts in your mouth. For drinks, the ube drink and the yuzu ole fashion were delicious. Overall, love the concept of this place. All chefs providing service, no wait only staff. They cool and bring out the food with passion. On the back of the menu, they talk about the mission of their restaurant group with plans for expansion and fair pair to chefs. It's refreshing to see and hear about this places future!
Be the first to ReplyThe food is really delicious and well prepared.
Tasting menu for 75$ is worth it and I enjoy the food! There is a new menu they change recently. Recommend to try if u visit Hawaii. The service is quick, staff are friendly and explain their menu very well before serving the menu.
Be the first to ReplyOur experience at XO was phenomenal.
Anthony made our night by explaining all of the courses, making us feel at home. Do not pass on trying XO, it is amazing.

I do not understand how this restaurant has some of the highest reviews on Yelp. It is a prefix menu which is fine with me, but even after making reservations they still made us wait about 30 minutes before our table was ready. To start off their drinks were not good, nor was their presentation. The strangest part about this entire experience was that this restaurant is about $80pp without counting drinks, yet after every course they did not give us a clean plate or new silverware. We were not impressed by any of the food and actually left wanting to get food somewhere else. Our waiter also acted like he was super busy and did not really pay attention to us. Sticky chicken skin appetizer was actually disgusting. The oysters did not even look like oysters and they were more breading than anything. Needless to say we were very disappointed with this experience. I feel bad for people who think this place is 5 stars, save your time and money and go ANYWHERE else.In response to the managers comment to my review I have added photos from my meal and the receipt. I was incorrect on price, it was $96 a person for the tasting prefix menu, not $80 as I stated above. See photos for food pictures. Kenneth commented below that they haven't had half this stuff on the menu in over 4 years...well this was July 3rd, 2021, not four years ago.

So it's been years since I've been back here and boy am I glad we tried it again. They have a prefix menu for $75 per person and it is well worth it. The food was both visually appealing, whimsical and tasted super delicious. It's served family style and each course was lovely. Some faves were the amuse bouche (a mushroom crepe like bite) and the beet ube with chimichurri sauce (reminded me of this awesome beet roulade they had years ago). For mains we got the ones that came on the menu without extra money - the fried chicken was different from what I remembered years ago. This was super crispy and not overly seasoned just perfect. The sous chef told us it was fried 3 times! And the accompanying rectangle okonomiyaki with lots of corn was delicious! The moussaka was fine, the best parts were actually the veggies around it especially the eggplant escabeche. The pork bell was also good - the cabbage beet cream bottom layer was a nice and tangy contrast to the rich pork. We paid the $10 for the ice cream cake which was fine but prolly ok to skip. The cutest were the bunny butter mochi. They were so cute and looked like they had little brown poos behind them and the green pandas bushes - overall this plate tasted super good and looked super fun and adorable. What we liked about our meal here was that it looked and tasted upscale but they seemed to be having fun with the food and not taking themselves overly seriously. It's not like the movie the menu - some places really are too crazy like that and so serious. Not very joyful. This dinner felt fun and joyful without sacrificing the quality or presentation and especially the taste. The space does get noisy - acoustics in here have always been tough. Since it's all concrete inside I think it can't be avoided.

Unfortunately we had a lackluster experience, and for the very high price of the meal I was tempted to drop to 2stars. Bottom line is that the flavors of the drinks and food did not impress. We were happy if a dish met the "acceptable" category because everything that came out looked very nice but seemed put together as an afterthought. We were only happy with the wagyu, which you can get better prepared elsewhere. The restaurant decor is also... cheap. Big freezers on the side en route to the dirty bathroom. For more than $200pp this is ridiculous. Please save your time and money and go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyThe best customer service and food was amazing.
The vibes are incredible, our service so knowledgeable with the menu. We will go back there for their regular menu.

When my wife asked me to pick a spot for dinner, I was lost! I'm way to indecisive but I knew I couldn't use the idk excuse any longer. I stumbled upon this location and when I tell you the food is amazing, that is an understatement! I absolutely loved everything, as did my wife! But the piece de resistance was the ice cream pie!!! Their house made bourbon sauce complimented this dish the best!
