Amazing experience
My daughters and I had the tasting menu and were blown away by the flavor combinations, the freshness, and the attention to detail. Service was impeccable. Overall the perfect experience.

Have visited many Michelin restaurants and our experience at Reverie was perfection. The chef's 11 course menu was fantastic and explored ingredients and combinations in a truly unique way. One pink dessert dish in particular was heaven on earth -- everything I never knew I wanted. Each of the chefs, servers, and sommeliers were each knowledgeable, engaging, and enhanced our experience. The restaurant has a fresh eclectic vibe and the decor is simple and modern. Of particular note were the beverage pairings. My husband had the wine pairings and, being pregnant, I opted to try their non-alcoholic pairing selection. It seemed a bit much at first, as I'd never had this type of option, but I can tell you it was phenomenal and worth every penny. Each course was expertly paired with a tasting of a cider, wine, or other non-alcoholic beverages that were as sophisticated and complex as our meal. The beverage director obviously approached this part of the menu with as much care and expertise as she did the wine pairings. Bravo!

Fabulous dining experience! We opted for the Long Tasting Menu with counter seating. As foodies, we loved watching the "masters" create, and each course was a visual and taste masterpiece. We liked the sleek feel of the restaurant, but the music could have been lowered a bit. The courses were small, but we walked out very full. It was a really outstanding dining experience, and I'm quite surprised that they haven't snagged a star yet (yes, this restaurant is that good, and I've eaten at a lot of "great" ones).

Worthy Experience!
Chef Johnny has designed a beautiful space with all tables having a view of the open kitchen. The tasting menu builds on one delicious dish after another and the wine pairings are unique, compatible and very enjoyable. Thanks to the chef, sommelier, and full team for a memorable experience. Looking forward to returning to celebrate my birthday next month!

Enjoyed watching Chef Johnny Spero on Final Table so when gifted this visit to Reverie we were excited. The night we dined there was a tasting menu which we had with wine pairings. The food was well cooked with a few truly exceptional dishes such as the razor clams, lamb tartare and the cod with buerre blanc sauce. Loved the desserts. Staff was welcoming and volunteered information on every dish and complementing wine. The food was very fine but with a very American touch which we really liked, such as local oysters with a floral touch, a brisket course and birch ice-cream with a scent of a local campfire. We recommend this restaurant for a truly unique dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyIn a word, "insulting:
I recently had an event with family (6 of us) at Reverie. It was more than disappointing. I should preface my remarks by saying we do not ascribe to the belief that more food is better -- we find the portions at places like The Cheesecake Factory to be disgustingly huge; enough for 3 meals. So I say the following with the idea that me and my family do not have expectations at any meal that the amounts will be more than we can consume. Having said this, the potions were insultingly small. At prices typical of a fine dining establishment ($15-$25 for starters and $25-40 for entrees) the tagliatelle entree (at $28) was a very small bowl with four noodles in it. Barely an appetizer let alone an entree. One of the fish entrees consisted of a small piece of fish with nothing else. The appetizers consisted of enough for each of us to have a very small bite -- we ordered three and felt ripped off.
Most of the food tasted good, with the exception of the lamb shoulder. It was large enough to constitute a full entree, but cost $60 (intended to be shared by tw0). It consisted of a nice shoulder, covered in a healthy portion of fat and a syrupy sweet coating that did nothing to accentuate the flavor of the lamb. Could have been spectacular, but came out just okay.
All in all we spent almost $300 for 3 appetizers and 6 entrees. We order no drinks, and no dessert. Frankly, there are far better places that offer imaginative food that neither insult one's intelligence as to what constitutes an actual meal, taste better and are not as overly-expensive as this place. I should note that the service was impeccable -- no complaint here. But will not be returning.
What a great experience!
Granted, we often get a little food numb or jaded because our only real hobby is trying restaurants and working our way through the Washingtonian Top 100 List and Michelin guides, but tonight was a very stimulating experience.
Chef Johnny Spero is really a gastronomic artist, and we are very selective with where we ladle our praise.
As usual, we opted for the tasting menu and shared a wine pairing. There are several reasons why we found this such a fulfilling experience:
(1) There is a well thought cohesion to the tasting menu as we travelled though the meal. The vinegar-based starter/ amuse bouche was the perfect way to energize your appetite and get your palette ready for the subsequent courses. Also, we admired the cohesion of how Chef Johnny used kanpachi in subtle but distinct ways through several courses.
(2) When the reservation was confirmed, the staff confirmed our lactose allergy and was well prepared to cope with the dietary restriction. Unlike many other more expensive restaurants, Reverie did a wonderful job of modulating courses without sacrificing quality or cohesion.
(3) I'm not sure whether to credit creativity, courage, technical skill, or something else, but almost every course was greatly enhanced through the blending of unexpected flavors and unexpected spices. The beef tartare was deliciously seasoned with an African spice mix he explained he had discovered working for another chef. The dessert blended pears and cilantro in an unimagined way. Finally, my final dessert bite infused just the amount of foie gras with the sweet and coldness of the dessert to reflect on the understated yet decadent flavor. We could both taste influence of his work at Komi here. I think this too is what I admired so much of the meal is the sense that Chef Johnny is humble enough to extract what he learned in past experiences but brave enough to build upon those experiences in new ways.
(4) For the price of the wine pairing ($65) I believe we got real value. Reverie introduced some very unusual wines that were really great complements to the courses. I'm not sure who is responsible for the selections, but I believe great thought and care was used in both the pairings and the selections.
The restaurant itself is pleasant enough. A little minimalist without being too stark with a couple of rough edges here and there, but I think the focus is more on the food than the veneer. This is how I first thought of Komi as well.
Staff and service are competent. Also, I belive there is considerable versatility among the staff, who seem unafraid to assume different roles as needed. My only minor criticism is that a time or two the serving/explanation did feel slightly rushed at this price point though. Water glasses never go empty and napkins are always replaced when you leave the table instead of refolding. Wine was always served before the food. Believe it or not, we've been to several Michelin starred restaurants that get something that basic backwards.
To address others comments about the small serving sizes, yes, we agree. In fact, we asked for an extra course to make sure were full.
However, overall the quality is superb, so we believe the price/quality/quantity is in fair alignment. The extra course we were served (the Uni Tortilla) was notably the weakest in flavor and harmony with the other courses, maybe because it was an unexpected addition. However, it was the most filling.
The total price for two tasting menus, one shared wine pairing, one extra course, tax and 25% tip was $386. Yes, this was a high-end meal, but if you take your food seriously and are interested in a tasty journey, then we believed it is a fair value. The meal is not cluttered with unnecessary schtick like you often see at this price point where there is a distracting focus on production value, but to be fair the presentation at Reverie is top shelf. I usually don't take pictures of my food, but I did of the kanpachi and radish because it was so beautiful.
I know I have gushed like a teenager with a crush [unlike most of my reviews where I gladly accept my position as a middle-aged curmudgeon : -) ], so why not five stars? To be objective, we've only been to Reverie once [and that was during the slower Christmas to New Year week], so we want to return to see if the quality holds. However, we both look forward to returning. Based on this experience, I think if you are serious about your food, then I believe you will greatly enjoy Reverie.
Good food, tiny portions
We enjoyed our evening here with friends but were underwhelmed by the food. It was good but not outstanding, portions were very small and very pricy, we waited on some dishes for a very long time. Waiters were very friendly and atmosphere is very warm and cozy. It’s just hard to justify such high prices.

I loved seating at the counter watching the chefs diligently compose beautiful dishes. Food was great, every item.

Very good food, innovative , friendly people. Taste menu was perfect, chef came to explain every dish.
Hidden treasure!
Very good food, TINY portions (enough food with tasting menu only)
The restaurant was hidden in an alleyway. The decor was beautiful, and we sat at the counter in front of the kitchen. We were very excited to eat at Reverie! But we were very disappointed with our overall experience. The food was creative and delicious, but it was pretentious every step of the way. We were charged a small fee to make the reservation. We were told we could order a la carte, since we were not in the mood for a whole tasting menu, and that ordering an app and main course each would be plenty of food. This was not the case - we were very hungry when we left. The drink menu is interesting, but mine, although tasty, had such a large ice cube in it that there wasn't much cocktail inside. The Sungold (which was very good) was bite size, with only 4 micro cherry tomatoes in some broth. It only whet my appetite. Again the scallop crudo was delicious but meager in size. The burger and kanpachi were very good, but not enough food without sides. We then ordered the rugbread to try to fill us up, but it still wasn't enough. We would have needed 3-4. Overall a disappointment. Be honest and tell people they need to order the 5 course tasting menu unless they just want a snack. Suggest bread for the table and offer a la carte sides. Really good food and cool atmosphere but be honest about what you are getting.
