This was my first experience with Rodney Scott's BBQ.
There is another location in Atlanta if you are in that area. So in my BBQ quest, I had travel to Houston and compared Texas BBQ to Carolina BBQ. My Texas friends are gonna be all in their feelings when they read this but oh well. The Carolina BBQ won me over. A family owned business that has passed down its methods for many generations. The spouse and I came here for dinner and I went with the rib tips. It had been so long since I've had good rib tips that it played a part in what I ordered. Initially, my greedy self looked at the portion and was like hmm...I may need to order something else so I don't leave hungry. Boy was I surprised. I didn't finish all of my food and ended up getting it to go. Sadly, I had to hear about how good they were and that only fueled my desire to go back when in the area. They make in house, fresh cracklin and pork rinds. To be sure they were delicious, we got a bag of each. The seasoning and portion was decent and they make for a great snack. The BBQ sauces are available for sale. You'll be best served by sampling a little of each one to see what pairs best with your dish. Even if you decide to BBQ at home, the sauce will jazz it up.A military discount is offered with proper ID. Dine in or carry out options are available. Catering is available and if needed, servers and other amenities for your event are priced with a requirement of minimum hours and fee per server charges. There is a parking lot across the street and along the side street. Cash, contactless payments are accepted. Orders take a little bit (but not a lot) of time to come out. Table service is available. Call ahead ordering is an option.Looking forward to trying other items from the menu. Definitely worth a try if you're trying to decide if Texas or Carolina BBQ is your favorite.
🤮
I went here for lunch and was in shocked at the prices.
I ordered a half rack of ribs that with 2 sides and an ice tea. Total bill was over $28.00. The needed sauce to get the taste going, the greens were terrible. Add bbq sauce and they were still bland. The Mac and cheese was 4 out of 5. I came here before the Covid-19 hit and the food was good, but now not worth the money. This has turned into a tourist trap, stay away.

The reputation of Rodney Scott's BBQ is that it is the
The reputation of Rodney Scott's BBQ is that it is the finest pork BBQ in the country. Bottom Line - it is all that AND much more! Walking in, you are greeted by a huge sign that says "Every Day is a Great Day", and the fact that you are HERE proves it. Pitmaster Rodney Scott is world famous for his 'whole hog' method of Q, where he cooks the entire hog then mixes the different cuts of meat (the loin, the belly, the shoulder...). This makes a smorgasbord of BBQ port on a platter that is almost impossible to replicate. The meat is a combination of peppery sweet with a vinegar tang to it. Each bite is a discovery of flavors. In most Q joints, the sides are mere fillers, but not here! The BBQ Baked Beans had pulled pork in them, along with onion and jalapeño. They were AMAZING! The Hush Puppies were quite simply the best HPs I have EVER tasted. Crispy on the outside, golden on the inside, and they come with a homemade honey butter to dip in. I have eaten some of the best Q this country has to offer - Texas Briscuit, Kansas City Ribs, Kentucky Mutton, North Caroline Pulled Pork...Rodney Scott's is the best Pork BBQ I have ever enjoyed, and among the top 2-3 Q joints in my travels!
😒
I was quite disappointed with my recent experience here.
I was in town and wanted to share some good bbq with my family. I got the family sized spare ribs with Mac and cheese and potato salad as the sides and an order of banana pudding. The ribs were super tough and did not taste like they were smoked for any length of time. My mom commented that she could have made better ribs at home, and she is correct. It is a real shame for a $51.99 order of ribs to be barely edible. I have had Rodney Scott's in the past and loved it so I am not sure if this was just a bad batch or if the quality has gone downhill. I hope it is not the latter. As for the other items in our order, the mac and cheese was decent and the potato salad was good. The banana pudding was also pretty good. Literally nothing was stellar and the ribs were horrendous. Not sure if I will be returning.

Delicious! Got the ribs plate with mac and cheese/hush puppies. Place was packed during lunch, but staff kept things moving the best the could. Definitely recommend but if you can take away, may be a little easier.

Let's start out by saying Rodney Scott's BBQ Charleston DID
Let's start out by saying Rodney Scott's BBQ Charleston DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I grew up eating from the original location and figured well it can't get much better than that.... Boy was I wrong! The assignment was definitely understood! The pulled pork was moist and cooked to perfection; though the southern in me was missing a lil bit of skin on top. The brisket was phenomenal juicy, seasoned fatty goodness with a crust on it from the gods!!!! The collards were flavorful and tender and a few dashes of the Rodney sauce to them over the top! The Mac and cheese, baked beans and potato salad all get 5 stars in my book! The staff was extremely helpful with great customer service! Through they had a packed house we received our food extremely fast! We will definitely be back!

Like other reviews, it was my quest to go to Rodney Scott's
Like other reviews, it was my quest to go to Rodney Scott's BBQ after years of reading and watching videos. I was disappointed. I also agree with others that Rodney Scott would not approve of the quality. Part of the service experience was even challenging - The team servicing the tables and bringing food out were amazing, friendly and proactive. The ordering process was probably the nastiest, most negative we have had in years of Charleston restaurant experiences. And, that sets the tone for your experience. The quest was the whole hog plate. It was dry, cold and lacked the flavor I expected. The portion underwhelmed as well. The collard greens were good. The three sauces including Rodney's sauce were excellent and helped save the taste experience. The beans were pedestrian. My wife and daughter had the rib plate. Very good taste, but very fatty, end pieces and didn't pull off easily. It was an effort. I don't expect fall off the bone, but I don't expect it to be a struggle. Corn bread was slightly burned on one side, but really good if baked right. The banana pudding was okay. I feel empty.
😒
The food was a bit disappointing for a James Beard winner.
The pulled pork was really good and the smoked wings are great. They had good hush puppies, baked beans and potato salad, but they were out of the collard greens (my fave). The ribs were decent, only a 7.5/10, the Mac and cheese wasn't good at all. Order the pulled pork, puppies and wings. Still not as good as other bbq joints I've tried over the years
😍
The barbeque (brisket and ribs) is so so good.
I'm from Kansas City and Barbeque is not even my favorite type of food, but this is better than any bbq I've ever had. The bbq sauce is more of a brine. You have to try it! I brought some back to the hotel and 5 hours later (i warmed in microwave) and it was still tender. The meat is favorful through out. The mac and cheese and baked beans were good. I enjoyed the restaurant. You grab a seat wherever you can. This is south carolina and every one is so friendly. Most of the people there were vistors/tourist. They have outside seating as well.
What a great meal and atmosphere. Pit cooking is an art and this place is definitely one of the masters. Great meat, tasty sauces and down home sides. Don’t miss it! Thank you Rodney Scott’s
😍
Amazing! Friendly staff, great selections, and everything
Amazing! Friendly staff, great selections, and everything was perfectly seasoned and prepared. Just learned they have an Atlanta location, so I'm definitely going to check it out when.
I'm not even a bbq fan but this was soooo good. They were out of pork (twice!) but the Ribs, brisket and sliced Turkey were tender and perfectly smoked. The highlights for me were the cornbread--dense, sweet and slathered in honey--and the fritters--perfectly light, crispy balls of heaven. Even the collard greens were great! The place is simple; you order at the counter and bring your number to your table, which are plentiful both indoors and out.
😍
First timer for vinegar based barbecue
Had the pork platter with 2 sides. This was my first time tasting vinegar based barbecue. It is different, and will become your favourite, especially the Rodney sauce. Cornbread was outstanding. Coleslaw was great. With a pint of draft how can you go wrong. Well run place with great staff. Recommended to anyone visiting Charleston.
😍
Made the trip up from West Palm Beach Fl .
Worth it , staff was awesome . Made it just in time before lunch rush , ribs and wings are a must have . Also did the pit tour , Thank You Pitmaster Steve and crew .

Food was good but for me, didn't live up to the hype.
Service was good. Clean and nice place. Collards and mac and cheese were great. Ribs were overcooked and tough. Pulled pork was decent.

In Charleston for a vacation and everyone told us that we
In Charleston for a vacation and everyone told us that we had to eat here. It didn't disappoint. The pulled pork is so tender and flavorful and the ribs are to die for. The cornbread is out of this world. and the Mac and Cheese is Yummy! I highly recommend a stop here if you are in Charleston!!!
We were told by locals to go here and we weren’t disappointed. The bbq, Mac n cheese, hush puppies were great. The baked beans were awesome. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because we waited 30 mins for a to go order at 3pm. They were busy but I saw others get their food before ours. Highly recommend. It’s worth the wait.
😍
Whole hog plate was money.
Staff was very helpful when ordering. Ribs were big, potato salad and Mac n cheese was solid.
Having seen the works of Mr Scott on Netflix, I new this was a must stop during our time in Charleston. We arrived shortly after 1:00 pm on a Wednesday afternoon. The place was nearly full and there were a few people in line. I opted for Rodney’s pork plate which included a heaping helping of his slow roasted whole hog and two sides. My wife opted for the baked potato, which is actually two large backed potatoes smothered in pork and other trimmings. The pork was extremely moist and tender. The best pulled pork I have had in sometime. Top it with Rodney’s peppery vinegar sauce and you will be blown away by the flavor. I opted for the BBQ baked beans and potato salad. Nothing fancy or overly thought. Simple traditional southern staples done right! This is a must for any bbq aficionado.
Absolutely worth the hype. Best bbq around. Very moist pulled pork, and all sides were spot on! The sauce is what makes this place stand out. The tangy vinegar based Rodney’s sauce is what really makes you feel that this place is nirvana for southern bbq.

Scott finally got his ribs! We were here 3 years ago and they were sold out. He didn't leave a bit of meat on the bone. Yummy food and the cornbread OMG. Definitely a Charleston must for us!

Well what can I say, I really wanted to like this place after watching the documentary on Mr. Scotts's story and success. Unfortunately it was not even close to GREAT BBQ. Best part was the whole pork flavor, brisket was dry and ribs were OK.

Visiting from out of town, on our list was to visit a BBQ
Visiting from out of town, on our list was to visit a BBQ place, so we picked Rodney Scott's. Maybe it was our mistake to come for dinner. I'm a vegetarian, so I don't really know how these things work. But apparently traditionally at a BBQ place they cook all the meat in the morning, so it's slim pickings by the nighttime. They ran out of a bunch of kinds of meats, so my boyfriend got pulled pork. He said it was chewy and cold. Another patron also came up to the front to complain about his cold food. They were not selling liquor or anything on tap. They also forgot to put the hush puppies and cornbread with our order and we had to ask for them, they came almost as we were done with our food. I just ate sides, so I have to say the mac and cheese was awesome and a winner and the baked beans were good too. I also enjoyed the baked potato, and was happy they had some vegetarian options. Okra was not the best. Our server was really sweet. I can't give this place more than two stars because the main thing they're supposed to deliver on, the meat, was problematic.
🤮
Every day is a good day! Not necessarily at Rodney's in
Every day is a good day! Not necessarily at Rodney's in Charleston. Very disappointing experience. I was early, waited patiently 25 minutes at door in the cold. A staff member opened the door 5 minutes early. I thanked him and told him that I appreciate it, because I am on an extremely tight schedule to make my next meeting. I just wanted to pick up bbq for $100 and a t-shirt to surprise my wife. The young man looked at me and asked me: "Can't you read?!" And locked the door again!I get it, if you are a stickler and start your shift on the very exact hour, but you can say this in a very friendly way! This is Charleston, not New York City - and no need to offend a customer.I have eaten almost every time at Scott's when I pass through Hemingway. Nobody would be that rude in a small town. I work with most named restaurants in Charleston for a living. Never have I heard such a rude line- ever! I'll pass it on. Words travel fast. There are plenty of good places to eat and great BBQ at Lewis.

THE BEST CHICKEN WINGS!!!! I also loved their pull pork
THE BEST CHICKEN WINGS!!!! I also loved their pull pork but seriously, the chicken wings were one of the best I've ever had!!! I had read about Rodney Scott's BBQ in multiple articles and even on a food show so I was super excited to try it... and it did not disappoint. I realized I'm not a big fan of South Carolina sauces that are vinegary but I did like the sweet sauce. I seriously think about those chicken wings... and wondering how I can replicate it (which I probably can't).
🙂
Heard a lot about this place by watching Food Network,
Heard a lot about this place by watching Food Network, Travel Channel: Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern. First entering we noticed the owner Rodney Scott greeting and waving at customers. That was a surprise to see on our first visit. The restaurant is smaller than I realized from watching the shows. But TV always make things appear bigger than they are. It wasn't a line inside to order. That's a plus. We took it to go. Didn't take long to get our food. It was hot and fresh. I also should mention parking isn't good. It has a small parking lot so we had to park across the street at a shopping parking lot that had a sign that you would be towed if parking there. But it was our first time and wasn't familiar with the area. We took the risk. When we got back to eat the food our only complaint was the sides were not enough for price. They could give your bigger portions for the 3.49 per side. But the food was good and will return to a location near home soon. Overall worth going.
😍
I've seen so much hype around this place.
I finally decided to try it after seeing his background story.... When I tell you I was beyond surprised, I went to heaven for a second. I ate the hand pie within 2 seconds. The Mac was so creamy and cheesy. The meat was so flavorful and smoky.... 1000009999/10 will be back. Wow!

Went on a Recommendation and it did not Disappoint !!
You have to have BBQ when you're in the South !! This place was recommended to us. As we were waiting on line, we were unsure what to order. The person behind us mentioned that the smoked turkey was amazing !! So, we had to get it !! We did 3 meats: turkey, ribs and pulled pork. Everything was great, including the cole slaw, mac and cheese, and especially the banana cream pie.
Fantastic barbecue and everyone here was really friendly! I had the steak sandwich, the meat is super moist and flavorful. The sauces on the table were all yummy and unique. A must for anyone to try!
😍
This BBQ was delicious.
We did not eat this in the restaurant but rather ordered online and showed up 25 mins later to pick up the meal. We got the two meat combo which came with two sides. Originally we wanted the pork but it sold out so we got the ribs (which were extra) and the chicken. The two sides we got were baked beans and potato salad. We also got another side of hush puppies to share with my wife and myself. We liked all the sides we got. The ribs were delicious and a generous helping. The chicken was good but if we were to order again we would get the pork if possible. The line gets really long here so my advice is to order for take out.
😍
Best smoked wings I ever had - make sure to get the Alabama
Best smoked wings I ever had - make sure to get the Alabama White sauce for them. Turkey and ribs were awesome. Whole hog/pulled pork was a little cold but still flavorful. Mac and cheese was ok but collard greens were fantastic. Get the cracklins to go - so damn good!
The ribs dry rub is the best I've had. Each rib individually rubbed and hickory smoked to perfection. Tender and flavorful, no sauce needed. The pulled pork was good and the sauces very nice using the whole hog. The brisket was excellent tender and flavorful, served with a big piece of burnt end. Collard greens were tender and flavorful. The baked beans had pork in them and tasted great. Even the iced tea was good.
😍
An appetite quencher well overdue...
I had been salivating for the opportunity to try this place for years and hearing the stories. When I was in college, I was 40mins away on a diamond dreaming of the aromas I would receive visiting Hemingway. Over 15 years later, they caught me through my air vents as I parked in Charleston. This was far from a disappointment. I felt welcomed and at home from the staff to the ribs, wings, greens, and cornbread that rendered me satisfied and speechless. This may have been one of the best birthday presents from my wife that'll be hard to top! I got a gift card for our anniversary so I'll be back soon!
😍
Wow! I've seen the Chef's Table where they highlight Rodney
Wow! I've seen the Chef's Table where they highlight Rodney Scott and heard him talk on a couple of podcasts so I had to see if the food matched the hype. It did! It was so good, I wish we had a place like this in my town. You order at the counter and they have everything a BBQ lover would love to eat. I ordered the pulled pork with crackin on top and a side of collards. This is my ultimate meal, I'm in heaven. Just writing about this is making me hungry. The pork is soft and with a hint of smoke. The cracklings are crispy but not overly. There's three types of sauces on the table to try, my favorite was the original since I like it tangy. I want to come back to Charleston so I can come here again.
Amazing barbecue! Great service! I went with a group of 15. We ordered a variety of dishes so I was able to taste a little of everyone’s food. The smoked wings are the best I ever had. Loved the potato salad and hush puppies. The fried catfish was great. There wasn’t anything that I tried that I didn’t like.

Rodney Scott is the BBQ King.

Rodney is the BBQ “King”. Don’t listen to all the negative reviews from malcontents. I have lived in the South and have been smoking meat since ‘86 and have smoked several hogs and currently own many Pits so
I know meat. I was never a fan of Low Country BBQ but….Rodney is a whole different level. His pork, superb. His ribs, Devine and his wings are magnificent. The wait time, 10 minutes was worth every second. And please don’t put ANY sauces on this work
Of culinary art for to do so would
Be like putting a bandage on the Mona Lisa because the model who posed had a blemish on her chin.
Trust Rodney with your palate he won’t disappoint.
I wanted to eat here because many food chanels recommended it. I thought it was decently priced and had very large portions. However, I did find the sauce ( we ordered the sweetest one) to be extremely spicy. My husband likes spicy food but even he thought it was too hot. So, with that said, make sure you get your sauce on the side. I had the pork ( seemed like thats what they bragged about on TV) and it was very tender. I didn't get to try the apple pies because they were out, but I did get the banana pudding and it was yummy.
It was a small place, so plan on getting there on an "off" time.
During a trip to Charleston the day after Christmas we went to Rodney Scotts restaurant for dinner at 5pm. We waited in line over a half an hour and once we got to the cashier we were told they were out of ribs, brisket, catfish and collard greens. As the order taker was telling us what they were out of another employee came by and said they did have some ribs. We were told we could order 1 pound of ribs for our party of four. We were all very frustrated because if they told us this while we were waiting in line we could’ve went somewhere else. I got the three ribs and my husband got chicken wings they were both horrible. The ribs were tough and tasteless and the sauce on the table was not good. The only thing that I liked was the potato salad and cornbread. The dining area was so cold we had to fine a table outdoors. This place is overrated no plans of ever returning.
