Great food, terrible service
This was meant to be a special birthday meal for my husband. I phoned before to ask about a more private table in the restaurant. Upon arriving they placed us in the main walkway next to the bar and reception, on average we had people walk past our table every second or so, also people from the bar who had pulled their stools out were about 5cm from us. I asked to be moved twice and finally we were moved to a better spot by the window. We decided upon the tasting menu, the food was great but service soured the experience, due to food was literally thrown at us before we’d finished the last dish, we had to ask 3 times what dishes were as they were just placed down on the table. The final straw was being suggested by the waitress a certain wine to pair with our main, which we ordered, to main came, we waiting 20 minutes, no wine, then ate the moan as was cold at that point, as we complained another 2 dishes arrived. At this point we asked to leave. Not a great experience or birthday meal.

Went here for pre dinner drinks after ABBA Voyage. Was fun and atmospheric with a short Japanese Cocktail list. The drinks were quite expensive for what they were and the list included many ingredients that I had never previously heard of but it was a fun evening. Not sure if I will hurry back
Be the first to ReplyOur perfect early dinner at Roka Charlotte Street
Took my friend for the first time to Roka Charlotte Street. It was a last minute booking but we had early dinner and they managed to give us a lovely table for two. 10 out of 10 for food and service. Food was delicious as always and my friend was impressed. They forgot to remove the nuts off the ribs as my friend is allergic, but they apologized and they quickly brought back the right dish. After dinner, they moved us to the lovely bar downstairs. Such a vibe altogether at Roka. The only little minus I can think of is the £20 note I saw the whole evening on the reception desk that is meant to invite people to tip. I work in the reception too and I found it a but tacky but this is only my opinion. I arrived by myself and the Maitre D also called me ‘darling’. I went to Roka many times before with my ex and I was never called that. I think this word should not be in their vocabulary no matter what.

The food was really good and the staff was very nice. Suggested a different Sake which fitted best with our food, etc. The atmosphere is really nice. The place is a little bit expensive, but isn’t out of this world, considering the quality and service that they have.

We always loved Roka, until the past three years or four. To me they were just like Zuma, but something changed. I wanted to give them a chance, and that is why we went again. It felt decaying… The fish and the asparagus were overdone. Fish dry, asparagus not juicy or crunchy. No flavor. The tempura batter was not right. May be they put some preparation that comes pre made for tempura, there should be a lace and not an armor of coating. For anyone that does not know this, may be they could find it OK. Many people in the service hardly understands English. They really struggle.

Never ever fails to disappoint, 10/10 as always for service and food. We were debating on going to Hakkassan but decided to stick to our go to restaurant and wow so glad we did our favourite restaurant of all time so glam in there as always. Thank you, Roka our No 1 restaurant x
Be the first to ReplyNice food but poor service
Birthday surprise from my Husband. The surprise glasses of Prosecco that he had requested on arrival were not there. Our last order took 15 minutes to arrive. On handing us the food the waiter reminded us of the 2 hour table limit (which really should have been mentioned at the beginning of the meal) leaving only 15 minutes to eat. As a result the meal was rushed and the surprise birthday cake did not come out. We were sat next to a pillar and couldn't interact with each other very well. Considering this was a birthday meal, no additional effort was made for the special occasion. Ladies toilets are in need of refurbishment with broken door locks and cracked tiles.
Be the first to ReplyAverage at best
The food here is distinctly average. The tempura batter is more like something from a fish and chip shop. The yakitori and skewer stuff were undistinguished. The salmon was …like any piece of grilled salmon anywhere. So not terrible, but for the price, very disappointing. This is not a good example of Japanese cuisine

We went on a Tuesday night, the restaurant was busy with a great atmosphere. The food was really good, meat cooked as ordered. We ordered the edamame, tempura prawns and tempura vegetables followed by the lamb cutlets and beef fillet with a portion of asparagus, for two this was a struggle as the portions are large. Service was ok but lost a star due to a lack of assistance with menu recommendations.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing- as always
Location - very centrally located , great subway access, easy to find Setting - fairly spacious tables , modern and comfortable dining room Service - very friendly and down to earth, and amazing team work . The food - every single dish was a wow . I especially liked the mixed sashimi, the lamb cutlets and the asparagus . I can’t wait to come back here …

Be the first to ReplyGood, but needs to up its game
Roka has been going for some time now, and we've been several times over the years. It's still good, but at the price (£99 for the premium tasting menu which we had) it needs to be better. Japanese food has come up on a lot over the last fifteen years, and to justify the prices, it needs to stay differentiated. Of the food we had, it was all very nice but with the exception of a very small number of dishes (the robata Wagyu beef for example), none really stood out as memorable vs. ones you can have at other decent Japanese/ Asian restaurants. A couple (e.g. the prawn tempura) were actually pretty average. Service was also average for the price - present, friendly, but a little chaotic. Felt a little like they were trying to get our wine down our necks as fast as they could which is always a bit irritating... don't need my glass topping up every time I had a sip! Looking at the bill when it arrived, my main feeling was "could have had something better for that price!" Although, looking the clientele, maybe quite a few didn't care about that
Be the first to ReplyGood sushi! Staff lacks sparkle!
Our second visit to Roka at Charlotte Street and both times our experience was similar. Sushi is really good, can’t fault it. Service was good. Front of house was on the verge of being rude, both times, which was a little annoying! Staff needs to show a little happiness. It’s understandable they are super busy, but being grumpy won’t help anyone! Room for improvement on the customer service front!
Be the first to ReplyStill Going Strong
When Roka in Charlotte Street opened in 2004, the place was hailed as a fabulous addition to the London scene. And although there have been a few ups and down over the years since then, the original is back to its very best. The place still has a buzz with the robata grill, bar seats and closely packed tables. And the food is as good as it's ever been. The best offerings do not come from the sushi menu, they come from the grill. Try the Korean lamb, the eggplant salad and the scallops and you won't be disappointed. The cocktails are quality, too. Recommend.
Be the first to ReplyPre-theatre dinner
Thank you Roka and in particular Manuel for organising a super pre-theatre menu for my daughter and I on Saturday without a reservation. The selection he made on our behalf due to our time restraint was perfect and the quality of the food served superb. The scallops were the best we have tasted. I must also mention the waiting staff who were friendly and attentive.

This restaurant never fails to delight. We went with a group, with a smaller group, and then with two people. Each time was just delicious and the service matches. Outstanding place and highly recommended. Whether sitting at the counter, in the back, or downstairs. All of the seating choices are fine.

The food was great, so was the service - but the noise was excruciating. I asked for it to be turned down, they did so but only a tiny amount. I couldn't hear my friends, or make myself heard, and lost my voice trying. The bill was over £270, which I wouldn't have minded were it not for the noise. Spoiled my birthday celebration.

Visited the Charlotte Street venue on Saturday 12th March 2022 for the first time. We were absolutely blown away by the service and the quality of the food. Absolutely excellent and would highly recommend it. Will definitely be going back when on London.

Stunning food as ever , friendly service and loving venue. I have dined here many times and aways get the window table at pre request
Be the first to ReplyNothing special!
I had been wanting to come to Roka for a long time. Firstly i think that Charlotte Street was a poor choice as It seemed to be more for business type clientele. Tables were packed very closely together and service was rapid. We did ask for it to be slowed down, but was told that it cant be!
We opted for the premium tasting menu at £99 per person. To say that it was meagre portions is an understatement. It consisted of the tiniest portions of raw fish, sushi &californian rolls, followed by some squid. Then a lamb chop each & some brocolli, followed by the tinest piece of blacken cod & a piece of very rare beef (even though we asked for medium!) which was to share between the 2 of us! Then a platter for desert.
We were expecting far greater things. If this was the premium then i would be very concerned at how small the normal tasting menu must be?
The squid, brocolli & blackened cod were delicious. The rest was just quite average really. It felt like we were not served all the dishes (should there have been king prawns in tempura??)
So all in all, not as great as we had hoped for. We may possibly try the Canary Wharf one, but will never order the tasting menu again, and wouldn't advise others too either, as it was definitely not worth £200 for 2 people!
Good great. Service poor
We have been to Roka on Charlotte street quite a few times. It used to be excellent in every facet. Last time we went the service was a little sketchy but we thought it would be a one off. We just had a late lunch and again the food was excellent but the service just ruins the experience. Surly staff who think they are too cool to be friendly, dishes being forgotten and on being reminded one of the dishes turned up 15mins after everything had been eaten. A reminder to a get a coffee and the general feeling you are being an inconvenience. The restaurant is really busy so the staff might be a bit stressed but for the cost I will skip going forward.
