Much to crow about when you dine at Rooster and Owl.
Rooster and Owl's attentive service and wonderful dishes made it a memorable night out for a big celebration. The menu is a symphony of flavors and more than enough food. Drinks are strong. Service is personal and the sum total of the evening was plus perfect. They gave "a hoot" about giving you a good evening and much to crow about by the time the evening was over.

Inventive and delicious food. Friendly service. Tasting menu had vegetarian and pescatarian options to accommodate everyone in our party. Great night out!

Love this build your own 4 course meal at R&O! Vibrant food and exceptional waitstaff (Lindsay rocks) and Ralph the service manager is a gem. It’s no surprise that they survived the pandemic and also earned a Michelin star. Also love that the name is inspired by the husband and wife team who had different schedules (morning rooster and night owl) but came together around food and family. They just opened a sister restaurant in NoVA named after their youngest daughter - Elle Bird. I will have to try it out. Everything I ate was delicious (even their bread and butter): scallop crudo with leche de tigre, citrus salad, and nuoc cham; squid salad with sun gold tomatoes, green papaya and peanuts (has a slight spicy kick to it); dry aged strip steak with piquillo puree, tomatillo relish, and fried mushroom that was amazing to dip into the hollandaise sauce. Dessert was hummingbird cake with chili pineapples with coconut sorbet. The mango and togarashi scrub mocktail was amazing. Can’t wait to go back! Had good timing because they raise their prix fixe price next week.
Be the first to ReplyTasty, unusual ingredients combinations, cozy. Worth to visit!
Awesome place to spend time with your close ones, especially if you have an occasion to celebrate :) it’s definitely one of the best Michelin star restaurants across the countries: interesting menu with unusual tastes combinations and fabulous serving. Here you have to choose appetizer, plate to start, main dish and dessert for your evening menu (4 parts for $85). But if you want to try something extra, you should pay only $10 for every dish. Sounds pretty good, huh? :) We chose to try all of the appetizers and I recommend you to do it as well - everything was excellent! Sometimes there were very unusual combinations. Other parts of the menu were also tasty and nutritious. Nothing to add - just try them! :) Wonderful staff: very attentive and friendly, they smile a lot, you really feel like you are surrounded by friends. I highly advise you to book a table in advance: for example, there were full seats on Tuesday evening.

Made reservations here about three weeks ago for my wife and I to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It turned out to be a great choice. We were seated right away. It wasn't very large, but very quaint. We each chose our four menu choices in the beginning, and they were delivered in order. Each choice was a culinary delight, and we loved each serving, I can't describe how amazing each item was, and our wait staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of each serving. Although expensive, we look forward to another visit.

This place is just incredible. Many restaurants serving this variety of dishes over four courses will miss somewhere. My wife and I ordered 8 total different dishes, every one outstanding. My wife also had an excellent and non-standard wine pairing. My highlights were the cacio e pepe and the saffron risotto with crab.

I had been wanting to try this place for awhile, and my husband and I ate here for our anniversary. We ate at the bar, which gave us the opportunity to converse with the excellent bartender throughout the night. The menu was impressive - we added a couple of extra plates to each of the courses. All food was delicious. The banh mi was a standout of course, but so was the sauce that came with the scallops. All the cocktails we had were elegant, delicious and creative. The Kimchi bouilliabaise I had for my main was great. NOw that I've been I cannot wait to return when the menu changes. delicious, fun, inventive, and reasonable price for the high quality. I'd recommend.

We enjoyed an amazing time at Rooster & Owl! Ian's attentive and enthusiastic stewardship of our dining experience elevated our evening. He and his fellow associates went far and above to ensure we and the other couples seated at the bar were well-nourished and delighted. The meal itself was delicious and satisfying, as were the inventive cocktails and luscious wine options. Such a wonderful evening The team effort at Rooster & Owl brightened our hearts on a chilly January eve.

We got a prix fix menu between my brother and myself. And we picked different plates so that we were able to try different things. Some plates were better than others. Each plate was thoughtfully presented and explained.

Every bite was a foodie’s treat, if not downright delicious. There were 8 different dishes from a four course meal between the two of us so there was a lot to experience. The service was also excellent. Every waitperson was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. And the space itself has a casual-chic vibe.

The food was an absolute home-run. So was the cab franc. Special while still being relaxed. I would come
Back absolutely any time I’m in DC
Clever name creative dishes
The reviews were tantalizing enough for us to add it to our list of dining experiences during our short visit. We were able to walk there and back which helped us both build an appetite and digest afterwards.
Throughout the evening we had attentive and friendly service by a multitude of servers. They were all professional and well versed in all the menu items.
The menu is four course fixed price $75. Not including drinks. Choosing which 4 items was a fun challenge. We chose different items so we had 8 samples. Our dinner included the pear frisée salad, scallops, steak, pork, octopus, pistachio cake and chocolate mousse.
All we’re good and filling.
Wow.....just WOW! Great place with no doubt why they got their STAR!
The spot is cool, with a semi open kitchen and a constant buzz in the dining room. The service is fantastic, with runners and clearers bringing and cleaning plates and our waitress Tiana taking care of the orders and drinks perfectly. So let's start with the cocktails and wine list.....really cool. I had 'What she's having" and it was fantastic, and my wife had a Sancerre by the glass....which I later added as well. Perfect. The food, well we started with a pear frisee' salad which was so good we got a second one....and I started with salmon crudo.....amazing! second course was a mackerel dish and hokkaido scallops, also very good. Third was steak diane for both of us and a sea bass to split and desserts were chocolate panna cotta and chess pie. I almost don't want to even say this, because it is NOT why we came or will come back, but for the price, this is one of the best meals we have had in DC. It was the perfect way to cap off my 55th birthday and I can't wait to go back......
Be the first to ReplyGood food; odd service
We met friends here for dinner. We were excited about the meal, given their fondness for the restaurant and its receipt of a Michelin star. Overall, it was an okay experience: the food, on the whole, was tasty; the service, oh the other hand, was often odd.
First, the food. We were with a party of six, so it was kind of decided for us that we would simply be served everything. Across the evening, that meant a lot of dishes. Several of them were good—salmon crudo was fresh and had a lovely broth; octopus salad had a lovely flavor and spot-on texture. “Pineapple rolls” (they have no pineapple in them; they are named for the texture of the bread) were sweet and yummy. That said, it was a bit hard to find a coherent point-of-view across all of the dishes.
Second, the atmosphere. It’s a pretty small spot, loud and buzzy, well-decorated. Pleasant, on the whole, if a bit crowded once full.
Third, the service. This was the disappointing factor. Although everyone was very nice and knowledgeable, the pace of the meal was not well-controlled. We arrived a bit before our reservation time and were seated, save for one person. Then, almost seconds after sitting, our server was pressing us for cocktail orders—we hadn’t even opened the menu (also, at a Michelin-starred restaurant, it’s annoying that the menu can only be pulled-up on your phone). When we asked if we could wait until our friend arrived—she was only 2 minutes late—we were instantly reminded that we only had the table for two hours. He was back almost immediately to press us again for cocktail orders. Then a barrage of food began arriving, in very quick succession. This relentless pace continued for an hour; our server was omnipresent. Right before dessert, he declared, as if we were on some kind of timer, “We’re making really good time! We have an hour left!”—yes, we are aware of that, since you rushed the whole meal. He then suggested coffee and slowed the dessert service, but with a half-hour remaining in the meal, the hovering began anew, the restaurant clearly anxious to move-on to the next party. All of this felt annoying and very assembly-line-like—disappointing for any establishment but especially once of this price point. It’s a meal, not a race to stuff your face.
We also had one person with a nut allergy at our table. The restaurant did ensure that all dishes with nuts were served in pairs—one plate without nuts (for half the table) and one with. However, staff could not seem to remember who had the allergy, and the position of the nutted versus non-nutted dishes kept switching throughout the meal. Had the staff been willing to take a breath and slow down, I bet they could have gotten it straight, but they were too busy with the rat race of the meal to take time to notice.
Mostly excellent
The least favorite part upfront: This is preset-only place, no a-la-carte menu, even for kids, so expect to pay 75pp. Would be nice if they had some kid-friendly options.
Otherwise the visit was great. It's a 4-course pre-set, but you have four choices for each course. There were 3 of us, so we tried 3 from each set.
Pretty much everything was great, but particularly memorable: octopus, pear salad, cabbage, pork belly, sea bass, dacquoise.
Biggest flop is pig ears, which were so overcooked and overfried and covered in sauce that there was no original texture or taste left.
Portions were small, but very reach and filling. We felt like we ate too much by the end.
Tried one cocktail and it was really good.
Service very attentive, although once the place filled up, it became a bit chaotic.
It's definitely going on our list for return visits.
Excellent service and food
Excellent service and food. We did the tasting menu and each course was delicious. The service was attentive, but not intrusive and they suggested an excellent wine pairing.

I don’t know what took me so long to get here! The service was impeccable, food was delicious…luckily we had four people in our party so we ordered one of everything to try.
Favorites: salmon crudo, chawanmushi, duck breast, triple cream cheesecake & chocolate panna cotta. Will def be back!
Not even close to a Michelin star
Without comparison the worst experience out of many on a Michelin starred restaurant I’ve ever had. Don’t ever agree to be seated on the patio. Don’t get me wrong it was a decent meal, but there was nothing in neither meal nor service coming close to a Michelin star, had I expected a mediocre restaurant in the outskirts of Washington I may have been pleasantly surprised, but I was not.

I visited DC twice this year, and Rooster and Owl was my favorite restaurant I dined at. For the price point ($75 per person), I thought the service, food, and ambiance were great!
My partner and I ordered different items for each of the four courses and our favorites were the oxtail pupusa, parisian gnocchi, and the duck with red curry and squash. However, we both decided that the desserts here were the clear winners here! We had the candy bar and the chess pie, both of which were the right amount of sweetness and richness (and the bourbon ice cream that came with the pie was out of this world). R&S does a good job of balancing flavors in their dishes and letting the ingredients shine through. At the end of the meal, you get bon bons with your check.
The service at R&S was wonderful as well. Our server was very attentive and asked how each course was, and he also suggested a nice red wine to accompany our meal. It was also cool to see team members from both FOH and BOH interact with the diners.
