Had an amazing dinner last night.
The hostess was so nice as we were running late due to an Uber snafu. Our server, Oliver, was SO kind and patient. Did a great job of explaining any questions we had about the menu and provided wonderful suggestions. Every thing we ate was so wonderful. Flavor combinations were amazing. My favorites were the English Pea Rangoon and the Cod. The also surprised us with champagne for our anniversary! Such a nice touch to make our night out even more special. The bread service before the meal and the financier cookie at the end were the cherry on top. Every person we encountered throughout the night was wonderful (especially Oliver) and can't wait until our next time here.
Be the first to ReplyOkay this place absolutely deserved their Michelin star.
Not only was everything prepared well and aesthetically pleasing, they were also really creative with their dishes, which I don't always see. The dishes were all texturally complex as well. It's one of those places that starts off solid but gets progressively better with each dish. Would recommend to anyone visiting DC and I'd love to come here again. Mocktails were well crafted. Their starter bread is a play off pineapple buns, and were so warm and fluffy. Started off with the BBQ carrots with "cornbread" appetizer, which was yummy with some fun flavors. Tuna carpaccio was good but didn't stand out to me like some of the other dishes. For our second course, I loved the scallion naan and thought the accompanying dip paired perfectly. My least favorite dish of the night was probably the white asparagus--lot of components going on there but I didn't think the end product really came together. Now on to the highlights-- mains and dessert. Lamb was so, so tender and the morels stuffed with foie gras were very creative and absolutely delicious. The cod also was legitimately one of the tenderest, most buttery pieces of fish I've ever had (it's very rare for me to see cod prepared so well). Desserts were absolutely stellar. Got the chocolate cremeux (perfect mix of chocolate, espresso, and salted caramel flavors) and the hummingbird cake, which may be one of my favorite desserts I've gotten in a restaurant ever (think carrot cake but like, better, and the flavors were so tropical and fun!).

I can see why the tire company gave this place a star! Rooster & Owl definitely lived up to the hype, with an amazing prix fixe menu that left my tastebuds in awe. Rather than going through dish by dish, I'll try to focus on some themes. The proteins in the dishes were all cooked to perfection. The cod was my favorite, with consistent temperature throughout the entire piece. It practically melted off my fork with each bite. The scallops were equally amazing, and so was the braised rib in the tortellini. Flavors were jumping off the plate, and varied widely from course to course. The BBQ carrots were so zesty, and the tuna tartare was bursting with citrus. Then the scallops were a nice contrast, served up in a smooth, creamy sauce. The menu felt like a journey from dish to dish, and I enjoyed every step along the way. Finally, the desserts were great. I feel like after a great meal, desserts might be an afterthought. Not so at Rooster & Owl. The pavlova was unreal, a nice crispy puff with a creamy center, and lots of fruit flavor. The cheesecake was a perfect blend of salty and sweet. This is one of those meals that will keep me happy for quite some time, definitely worth a splurge for a nice meal in DC!
Be the first to ReplyWatch the Steps Hidden Behind the Black Curtain When
Watch the Steps Hidden Behind the Black Curtain When Entering!!! On March 5th, we reserved a table for dinner at Rooster & Owl to celebrate a birthday. We were off to a good start finding free parking along the south side of Meridian Hill Park, a short walk on an unseasonably pleasant evening. But that good fortune quickly ended when upon entering my wife fell on the two little steps hidden by a pair of black curtains that customers must part in order to enter. She was injured by the fall. There was a sign pinned to the curtain about "a step", but there are two steps and they are hidden, unlit, and located immediately beyond the curtain, a textbook tripper. Does Michelin the tire company that introduced grippy radial steel belted tires to the US in the late 1960s, consider how one needs that extra Michelin-like grip when entering the Rooster and Owl? It should. After this accident, we proceeded with the meal. It was excellent as was the service. 5 star stuff in our opinion. I no longer drink wine, so it was nice for me to find an upscale restaurant offering a DC Brau Pilsner on tap. The tripping injury and pain that lingered for over a week, left an unfortunate aftertaste to the dining experience for all three of us. Therefore, we have awarded a single star in our review, because there is no excuse for any public restaurant entryway that is primed or designed to operate like a deliberate tripping device. And Rooster and Owl does not present itself as just any DC public restaurant. It justifiably presents as a great restaurant. It also seems that the GWU and Columbia University masters degrees earned by the owner Carey, should have informed her better about causes of slips and falls in pubic places, especially obvious ones.
Be the first to ReplyI'm lactose intolerant, and would not recommend this
I'm lactose intolerant, and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who has that or any other type of food sensitivity or allergy. While the food I was able to eat was delicious, it wasn't at all what I wanted, and there is no effort to adjust the menu to accommodate. I can accept that; they are dedicated to their menu, and the chef's vision for the meals is realized well. Just don't expect to look at the menu and be able to eat what you want with changes in preparation. This restaurant is "culinarily frigid". I knew I was in trouble when the gentleman in the suit who was serving bread and drinks started off by saying, "I feel sorry for the person who is lactose intolerant at this table..." Not exactly the way to make me or anyone else feel welcome, and look forward to the meal. I spent a LOT (I repeat...a LOT!!!) of money on a meal I didn't want. And I feel as though the restaurant collectively said, "you're welcome..."...??? Yeah...not going back.
Be the first to ReplyI don't remember the names of the dishes but each one had
I don't remember the names of the dishes but each one had superb flavor. The standout were the desserts. There were 2 small slices of tangerine which accompanied the white one on the right and each slice was incredibly juicy - not sure how they do that but wow! Service was attentive, fun and the restaurant vibe was easygoing. There's street parking right outside the restaurant but you have to arrive early to get a spot.

We came here back in August when we were in Washington DC visiting family. We decided to treat ourselves to a date night and it did not disappoint. We both did the pre fixed and both got different dishes so we could try more things. The food was delicious. We also both got the wine pairing which elevated the experience for a Michelin star. It was nice and laid back for the type of restaurant it is. Service was impeccable as well! We will be back next time we're in the area
Be the first to ReplyWonderful dinner experience at Rooster and Owl.
My partner and I visited on a weeknight and tried the tasting menu. Everything was delicious and we especially loved the short rib tortellini. R&O was sensitive to my partner's shellfish allergy, clearly noting the dishes with shellfish and confirming what was shellfish free as it was presented to our table. The cocktails were delicious and service was 10/10.

Love this place! The service is great and we thoroughly enjoyed everything we had. If I had one qualm, it's that sometimes there's a wait between courses so just be prepared to be there for at least 2 hours. Regardless, it's worth going! Our faves: First Course - Beets: I loved these, but I overall like beets and it didn't disappoint - Carrots: I didn't love these but most other people said they were one of their faves so I would just get them Second Course - Potato: Probably our favorite thing we ate, just get it. It's like the best baked potato you'll have - Naan: it was good, but just didn't compare to the potato Third Course - Chicken: our favorite for sure, perfectly cooked and savory - Tortellini: good but didn't compare to the chicken. Other people preferred this so probably give it a try anyway! Dessert - Hummingbird Cake: we're both chocolate people but we preferred this. If you like carrot cake, you will love this. Great combo of textures and flavors - Chocolate Cremeux: it was good but I think a little heavier
Be the first to ReplyDo not sleep on Rooster & Owl! I was able to make
Do not sleep on Rooster & Owl! I was able to make reservations for Friday night the week of thanks to Resy alerts and had the best night. I had only ever had their takeout during Covid and definitely underestimated the in house experience. It is a fairly small place with a single bathroom but surprisingly, there was never a line each time I went. I would also say that Rooster & Owl is a more lively dinner spot than a traditional fancy Michelin restaurant, which I prefer. Our server, Kennedy, added so much to the entire experience! She helped with the ordering process by validating our choices/making recommendations and selected my wines based on my typical preference (I loved all of them). The way she described the wines she selected for me was so animated and descriptive too. Truly the best service! We were feeling fancy and started with the champagne and caviar which included the caviar plate and two glass of champagne and while delicious, I wouldn't get it again. My friend and I ordered different options for each course to share except for the Short Rib tortellini which we both wanted as our entrees. For the amazing deal of $15 to add any course, we added the Chicken Presse entree to also try. Definitely take advantage of this to taste and add more options! My favorites for each course were the BBQ Carrots, Seared Scallops, Short Rib Tortellini, and Hummingbird Cake. I also don't normally order chicken but this was a standout! The chocolate cremeux was good but I wouldn't order it again and it didn't even come close in a competition with the hummingbird cake! Next time, I would like to also try the Hasselback Potato which Kennedy had recommended. I will be returning for sure!
Be the first to ReplyExactly what we wanted and needed after nights of large
Exactly what we wanted and needed after nights of large group dinners. We got a cozy spot at the bar, and Gregory was welcoming and kind, walking us through the menu and also bringing an alternate bottle of the chateauneuf du pape to consider (it was amazing and same price point). Dan the bartender had some time to chat as it was a Tuesday night - we enjoyed visiting with him. Food was wonderful and we ordered different things so we could try more options. I loved the bbq carrots, and he enjoyed the fluke tartare. Second course, the hasselback potato was super satisfying and the bacon jam amazing. He had scallops and they were cooked perfectly. On third course, he ordered the cod and I ordered the tortellini, which is the opposite of our typical choices. Both were great but I give the cod top honors, kind of a riff on an upscale and delicious clam chowder. We had the hummingbird cake and chocolate cremeaux for dessert and Dan made us a great after dinner drink with a fruit liqueur and some calvados. Best meal of our trip, by far, and up there in terms of recent faves.
Be the first to ReplyI'd like to start by addressing the folks who don't think
I'd like to start by addressing the folks who don't think this is "Fine Dining" enough... That's the point! It's High end food that is approachable. Appreciate the flavors/experience and share your plates with the table. If you want your napkin folded into a swan and you turn your nose at the amazing "$15 offer for any additional portion", then yes, you should go somewhere else. If you're down to earth and enjoy a phenomenally prepared meal of your choosing, then give R&O a try! Food - 10/10 - Everything was perfect! No complaints! Ambiance - 9/10 - We sat in the outside heated patio and it was great! Service - 9/10 - The server was genuine and personable, yet always professional. Thank you Jake for the great service! Overall - 9.5/10 It's nice to have a place that doesn't get caught up on their own ego! If you want to have an amazing meal, come here. If you are more interested in the "finer things", you may want to go to a black tie restaurant... which is fine, because me and my wife will take your reservation here! LOL (Including picture of our chosen $15 add-on, Norwegian Cod. Didn't need it, but based on quality of other dishes, had to try it! How could you turn away a plate such as this for $15?!?!?)

Lots of potatoes in many dishes, not that delicious, service not great, keep rushing us to pay ( we just got new cocktails and dessert, already shoving the bill in our face), won't come back again, just the hypes
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing meal.
Chef's tasting menu and wines were superb. Incredible pairings, attention to detail and service was excellent. Highly recommend!!!
Be the first to ReplyAsian inspired, creativity blends with extraordinary food
Asian inspired, creativity blends with extraordinary food at this Michelin Star restaurant. Smalls plates to share but leave feeling fulfilled. We also had the imperial Ossetra: caviars with brown butter steam buns and champagne for $135 for 20g. Highly recommend you go all in with this luxury. Small restaurant and tables were tightly packed. We sat in the heated patio. Incredibly friendly servers and super casual. I've been to Michelin star restaurants where if you're wearing black, they switched out my napkin to a black one. But Rooster & Owl didn't. Just an observation to prove that while upscale, the vibe is casual. Next time I'll bring 4 people so I could try all of the dishes!!!

Was super excited to come here! My main feedback is that the service was rushed. The next course was set down time and time again before we finished our previous course. The check came before we asked and before I had finished dessert. They must hold strong to a 90-minute seating. Sitting at the bar there was a strong chill from the door. The bartender, Tim, was great and the food was solid. The starter course was the best (A+) and the other courses were delicious but not exceptional.
Be the first to ReplyAll I can say is that the Michelin star is truly well
All I can say is that the Michelin star is truly well deserved.Service: 20/10Came by for a birthday dinner and ALL of the staff were saying it! They were extremely attentive and everyone worked together so well. Food came out relatively quickly, detailed explanations of each dish. Busboys came out to clear plates after each course, wiping down the table each time. Our server was so helpful and quick even on a busy evening. Food: 10/10LOVE that the tasting menu has options to choose from, had basically a taste of 2 tasting menus! My favorites were the bbq carrots, bahn mi, honey glazed duck, and the cheesecake! The chocolate cremeux was good but not great, wish I went for the early grey panna cotta instead.Ambiance: 8/10Not a lot of space from where I sat, could definitely overhear the conversations of tables to either side of us. They dimmed the lighting around 9pm which I thought was a bit late, wouldve expected closer to 7-8pm. 2 gender neutral restrooms, both very clean and spacious. Overall, would love to come back since I know they have seasonal menus. Innovative dishes with interesting textures and flavors. S
Be the first to ReplyFabulous staff and a true family feeling with the staff
Fabulous staff and a true family feeling with the staff being a perfectly oiled machine. Charming inside and cozy heated outside !! Get the scallops to start - the carrots are fun and what they received a write up for:) the pineapple buns were exceptional and we never eat bread ! Saffron risoto was worth the upcharge and the banh mi phenomenal! If you can order ALL the "and then" entrees, it's worth it !! Portion sizes - flavors - and variety is flavor explosion ! Chocolate cremeux is a MUST!
Be the first to ReplyI was super excited to try this place but felt the portions
I was super excited to try this place but felt the portions were too small and some of the entrees were disappointing. We enjoyed the scallops starter. The stand out items were the pineapple buns, the tots and the dessert. Everything else was nothing to write home about. I have to give credit to our waiter, we reminded her that we're celebrating a birthday and anniversary and she brought us the hibiscus drink and an additional small birthday dessert. Keep in mind they can't put candles in dresser for celebrations.
Be the first to ReplyI have eaten in some of the finest restaurants in America.
This is my first review ... ever.I cannot recommend this place enough. Food was creative, different and perfect in flavor and presentation. The chef is an artist.Wonderful atmosphere. The service was simply outstanding which I believe speaks to an internal culture that cares about its people and it's customers. It is expensive but by no means overpriced. You aren't just paying for the ingredients... you're paying for the excellence. Finally, the best Old Fashioned I have ever had.Enjoy!
Be the first to ReplyGood service.
Food is generally tasty (a bit too salty to my taste). Portion is extremely small though. I'm still very hungry right after dinner.
Be the first to ReplyAnother great find In DC and certainly not a bad price at
Another great find In DC and certainly not a bad price at $85 per person for the full course experience. Our party of two wanted to try as much on the menu as possible, so we each ordered something different to maximum the full tasting. To start we had the Scallop Crudo and Delicata Squash. The Scallop dish was probably my favorite. I love the citrus taste to the dish. Squash was just okay. Then we tried the Fancy Tots and Saffron Risotto. I thought the Risotto was great, but not a fan of the tots. Wasn't very Tot-like. I think the dish would have been a lot better crispy and with a crunch. Our proteins were the Honey Glazed Duck and Braised Lamb. Duck had a lot of flavor, but lamb was average. Lamb was more like a lamb loaf than anything. To finish, we had the Panna Cotta and Maple Sponge. I'm thinking, both were a bit too fancy for me. The flavors just didn't do it for me, but at least the presentation was very nice.Service was fast and friendly. Server was attentive and staff brought new plates each time we started a new round of dishes. Also loved the décor, simple but cute. Definitely check out the wallpaper in the bathrooms. Not a huge restaurant, but they have indoor and covered patio seating.

How can you name a restaurant ROOSTER AND OWL, but there are no birds Inside?? What??? I feel scammedHowever food was great, drink pairing was perfect (I would have subbed Sauternes or a port for the last sparkling wine because I had chocolate) and the staff were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. Great experience

I regrettably did not capture any of the dishes via my camera, but that's only because I was devouring them so quickly. Everything was phenomenal!A special shout-out goes to the dessert team. The goat cheese cheesecake and earl grey panna cotta were unbelievable. I've never tasted desserts so heavenly and complementary. My favorite dishes of the night were the Galette, foie gras "Bahn Mi", and Braised Lamb.
