Great food so-so service
I would like to address this review to Ashok as I had worked for him at 701 in the 90’s. Congratulations on adding another wonderful, delicious, innovative restaurant to the city. We were truly impressed and enjoyed our food immensely!!!
We came as a party of 5 at 7:30 to celebrate a birthday. I informed the hostess who it was too. After being escorted to the table I realized that we were not going to be comfortable as we were planning to order plenty food to share. We were shown another table that was smaller despite the fact that there were 2 empty tables beside us that could have been combined. (FYI 1 remained empty all night) We were not happy but we wanted to enjoy the evening.
The waiter KC or KZ was so impressive that I was like wow!! Good job Ashok. Standards have not gone down but his 10 went down the drain very fast. He barely came to check how our food was. We had to serve our own wine but that was ok too because when they were pouring it felt like let’s finish this bottle so they’ll order another one. Plate after plate was brought to our table that was filled with 5 glasses of wine and water and even the bottle itself at some point till they figured there is a standing wine bucket beside us. The busboy also brought out a plate and when we asked what it was he had no idea. I also whispered to our waiter you know we have a birthday right? He said no but now he knows. How could that be when I informed the hostess and the lady Jess who opened the wine for us greeted our birthday celebrant?
I kept on waiting for what’s next till a dessert came with 1 spoon for the birthday song. I asked our waiter dessert menu? He said kitchen is closed. I said why did u not offer us dessert before it closed? Because you were eating. (He had also informed us before we ordered our main courses that kitchen was closing) Ok. Just bring us some spoons so we can share this single dessert. He brought tablespoons ?????? Now I am truly upset. Then he comes back and says oh, there is still someone to make you dessert. But we no longer want it. Also when our table was being cleaned, I asked to pack the pita. There were 6pcs and the guy just dropped the bowl back to the table, just like that. With a bang!!!
Jess asked how we were and I said I’ll just write a review and she wanted to know what’s wrong. I told her and she offered drinks. Is that enough to compensate for the experience? Not really. We can afford to buy our own drinks. But thank you for offering.
I am done trying with this place
Unfortunately this place has gone downhill, and I can't say it has anything to do with COVID. We have eaten here around ten times and have experienced the decline over a 2 year period. We had a reservation for six people at 8:30 on NYE. Two of us arrived before the others (which included my husband who made the reservation). The unnecessarily unfriendly hostess/sommelier informed me that we requested outdoor seating and would be sat outside in the street under a tent in the rain. The restaurant was about half full, and when I asked if there was a chance of getting a table indoors, she said she had three more parties of six coming in at 9:00, but she could try to squeeze us all around a four top. I decided to sit at the bar and have a drink while waiting for the rest of our party. The bartenders were engaged in a conversation with a young lady who was talking about her plans for the night and barely said 'hello' or engaged us.
When the rest of our party arrived, my husband showed me on his phone that he had requested indoor seating. We showed the hostess, who proceeded to argue with us that her computer showed 'outdoor', and that the system puts 'indoor' for all reservations. I then told her that we still did not request outdoor seating. The gentleman manager stepped in and said it was not a problem and sat us at a six too that had been empty for 20 minutes. The hostess proceeded to walk past our table and give my sixteen year old son a nasty look (how mature!), and talk about us to other employees and guests at the bar (how incredibly unprofessional).
We ordered three New Year's Eve menu specials, each costing $100 for two people. The food has gone downhill, with flavors not really tasting authentic anymore, but everything was good. A food runner dropped off one entree (duck) in front of my husband and we then literally sat for fifteen minutes waiting for the other entrees (skirt steaks) to arrive. The server acknowledged this and said that my husband must have gotten someone else's dinner and walked away, seemingly unfazed (based on past experiences here, timely and accurate food delivery is an ongoing issue). The other five dishes came out about five minutes later.
We ate. The skirt steak was very good, but one third of the plate had couscous with raw turnip chunks, which was not good, and a massive amount of harissa to fill the other third of the plate.
Our server came around, while the table was still full of dishes and empty glasses, and dropped the check off to me. She said, ' here is your bill...unless you guys want something else'. I was a bit taken aback that we were not offered dessert or after dinner drinks. So, I paid the bill and we left.
The other three parties of six never showed up while we were there. In fact, we did not see a single party come in at 9:00. I don't know why the hostess was just trying to be rude, but she has mastered the art, based on our visits every time she works. Why work in the service industry?
This was the last shot we are giving Sababa, based on the fact that the prior experience we had about six months ago was so bad that half our bill was comped by the manager. He had begged us to please try again, and told us to at what we had experienced (terrible and rude service, missing food and drinks, wrong drinks) was not their standard of service. Apparently, it is. We always spend at least $400 when we dine at Sababa, as a family of five with three teens. This place is definitely not worth the price.
We loved the Oval room, and apparently it has been rebranded as a French restaurant and reopened. I hope the experience there will be better, as the restaurant group cycles servers through its locations.
Almost like being in the Middle East
I lived this place! Menu is excellent. Ambience very good. Flavors are unique. Service excellent. Pita is excellent. No complaints. The best hummus in town
Funny that they share the kitchen with Bindaas and such a different palette.
I’d go back anytime.
Enjoyed the food
The food was excellent. Our family had the lamb shank, Mediterranean grill and chicken thighs and very much enjoyed the dishes. The appetizers were also great. We loved the hummus and cauliflower dishes. Our waitress was informative and friendly but I have a feeling that the restaurant was understaffed that night and I had to wait quite a bit longer than the rest of the family for my dish. I was also surprised that this restaurant did not serve Turkish coffee which would have been a great ending to the meal. However, because of the quality of the food, I would definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Outdoor Dinner
The only other time I’ve eaten at Sababa was a takeout special for Thanksgiving,so this was my first venture with their standard menu. We began with an order of Salati, puff bread with five different sauces. The sauces didn’t look all that substantial, but they were delicious and filling. So much so that we almost didn’t order anything else. But, in the end, we sprang for the Vegetable Bastilla, which was spicy and even more filling. Our drinks were also tasty, and the evening was delightful albeit a bit warm. On the whole, I think I would prefer eating indoors here: the traffic on Connecticut Ave. is pretty noisy at times. We’ll come back many times.
Be the first to Replyalways a delightful experience
from the moment you walk, you get a delightful welcome.
Our favorite table is on the roof deck and to come early
the appetizers are unique in taste, our favorites include the charred eggplant and roasted halumi
chef Ryan always comes up with soemthing unique for his regular cutomers
Ambience of the whole place is a delight to visit before and during COVID
An excellent fixed price,
An excellent fixed price, non-traditional version of takeout Thanksgiving dinner! We got hummus, a spectacular green bean side, tzimmes, a vegetable plate, pita and Turkey kebabs, and a filo Konami for dessert. Picking the food up was a breeze: I simply drove up to the curb, called them, and someone brought the food right out to my car. Then, a few hours later, we sat down to our copious meal and really gave thanks. Things didn’t strike me as entirely typical of the Israeli, Middle Eastern or Mediterranean region, but everything was truly wonderful. We might just establish a new Thanksgiving tradition.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and creative food, good COVID protocols
Had a wonderful meal in the "streetery" in front of Sababa (I think it's shared with neighboring Bindass). The halumi was terrific and all of the dips in the Salami were yummy. Plenty there to share and the pitas were fresh and tasty. The service was excellent and we felt very safe from COVID exposure with well-spaced tables on under their heated tent. They took a first name and phone number from each party for contact tracing. All in all, an excellent experience. It is a tad spendy but the experience was very nice and the servings adequate so I didn't feel that bad about the prices.
