Once in a lifetime, theatrical fine dining experience with an unforgettable bill!
I didn't know much about Saison before I dined there, just that it was one of the few 3 Michelin Star restaurants in SF and it had just been voted as number 37 in the world. This is the only completely open kitchen restaurant that I have been to and we were lucky enough to get a table right at the front of the action. Food is interesting and locally sourced dishes ranged from a 4/10 - 8/10 in my opinion. Everything is cooked on an open fire be it smoked, smouldered or BBQ'ed and you have to admire the owner for his unique brand and ingenuity. Unfortunately, some of the dishes were not as tasty as they were theatrical ( a bit like Fat Duck) but it was all an experience...... as was the bill, be warned, its not for the feint hearted!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Meal
We sat in the bar area and did the abrudged menu with add on waygu, cavier and sea urchin with sake. The meal was paced well. The disappointment was the duck course. Duck was not tender and the duck saisage seemed too gamey. The plusses were friendly team. The pineapple upside-down cake dessert was awesome. The chocolate treat to take home was wonderful. 1k meal for 2 is not cheap though.

They make amazing cocktails, they have an awesome sommelier, their rare food delicacies combined with wine pairing is an experience like no other. The staff is so friendly and it is fun to engage with the chefs which makes it a special experience.
Be the first to ReplySaison is amazing! Awesomely prepared food.
We all ordered multiple items so we could share and taste everything. Everyone agreed that all items were expertly prepared. No complaints from anyone in our party. Will be visiting again soon.

Incredibly creative, nothing else like it. I had lamb about 7 ways, bone broth, leg, roast, foam, heart. I sometimes dine alone and they achieved my expectations and more. Very knowledgeable and interactive staff. Variety of tastes and textures was unbelievable. One of my best meals ever.
Be the first to ReplySaison is the total package!
The food is delicious, unique, umami-toward and beautiful. Each dish is delivered by the chef who executed it. The open kitchen makes it a fun experience. The precision with each dish is executed plays out in full-flavored dishes that excite the eyes and tickle the taste buds. Highly Recommend. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyOne of our favorite places in the SF
Amongst the highly competitive dining scene in San Francisco, Saison is by far one of the best.
Overall we had one of the our best culinary experiences here. Saison combines the luxurious feeling of fine dining with a comforting taste of deeper umami. We experienced their course meal that very contemporary. One of my favorites was Their cold uni (sea urchin) on sweet & warm bread had me by surprise, but they made it work very well. It transitioned from sweet to savory, and melted the creamy butter texture palates in your mouth extremely well.
Finer details: Also they used gold on their desserts as well as pottery using gold “kintsugi” which is a way to repair broken plates with metal to mend pieces back together for its second wind. Beautiful combinations! Also, the temperature of each ingredient were on point. Their service and attention to detail/guests was phenomenal.
Well executed but overated
Perfect for a special occasion, Saison is a delicious treat in the middle of San Francisco. The service is top-notch, and the food is beautiful and well executed. Admittedly though, I found the overall experience to be a bit overhyped and overpriced.
All the dishes in our seven-course meal were solid. The wine pairing was really well done. However, none of the food was all that memorable. The food lacked creativity and imagination. The highlight of the evening was probably the duck course. However, I've had similarly well-prepared duck at other restaurants.
Overall, I'd give Saison one Michelin star rather than two.
Best restaurant in SF
Let me start out by saying this place is nothing short of spectacular. I have been to multiple mitchelen star restaurants around sf and this one tops them all.
Patio Tasting menu
Pros:
-The food was amazing, perfectly cooked and prepared beautifully.
-Saison knew how to take local ingredients and pair them into something absolutely amazing that i had never tasted before
(Favorite dish caviar)
-The service was amazing and they have a mixologist to make any drink you want just by telling them what types of flavors you like
- the food here was the star though. With 5 smaller courses a filling main course and a dessert. For the main course i had the duck which was such an inspired dish allowing you to make full use of the animal. The skin was crispy like a peking duck and the flavors were amazing
Cons
Dessert was the only thing left me wanting more but i was so full by then it didnt matter to much
Look lazy bear, michael, niku, gary danko are all great but this place takes it to the next level we will be back!
Very Good - But Not Excellent This Visit
Very Good - But Not Excellent This Visit
With our business trips to San Francisco winding down, we are re-visiting some of our favorite restaurants, and possibly for the last time. In July, we returned to Saison, a which we had not dined, since July, 2016. That visit elevated Saison into the top three, or four restaurants in San Francisco, at least for us. However, this visit offered some surprises, and not all positive ones
First, we had the Concierge at our hotel (one of San Francisco’s best) book our reservation, as we were traveling heavily for the two months leading up to our stay. I thought that I was quite clear on the dining experience, that we were seeking – a repeat of that July dinner, 36 months before. Still, as there was a third party involved, I cannot say where things went wrong. I take full responsibility for our dinner.
We arrived at the restaurant, located in a converted power house, at 178 Townsend, in the thriving China Basin Area of SoMa (South of Market), quite close to the ballpark, and also to my wife’s old corporate office.
On our previous visit, we had been seated at the bar for a few minutes, while our table was being prepared, and sipped Champagne with the Sommelier, while we discussed our preferences for wines, since we were doing the tasting menu, and the wine pairings. On this visit, we were seated at a tiny 2-top, in front of the bar, and assumed that we would be moved to a table in the rear of the restaurant, looking out to the open kitchen, just as we had requested. Again, we started with Champagne, but got no consultation with the Sommelier. This was to be our table for the evening. It was barely large enough for a couple of glasses of Champagne, let alone the wine pairings to come, plus food.
We were also in banquette seating, so all service had to be done by sliding between the rather tightly-packed tables at the bar, which was inconvenient for the servers.
I inquired about the seating near the kitchen, most of which, at this early hour, was empty, and was told that one had to make special reservations for those tables. Our meal lasted about 2.5 hours, and there were still two empty tables, where we had been seated on our previous visit. Perhaps many diners were coming in at 10:00pm?
The meal was very good, but with the crowding on our little table, the flow was just not there. The service, because of how the service folk had to get to us, was intrusive, as well - totally unlike the seamless, almost a dance, that we had experienced previously. As much of the final prep and plating was done table side, I am in awe of the dexterity of our servers, who had to work in the cramped spaces at our table - they were amazing, and never missed anything, that I could tell. Yes, there were a few theatrics, but well-performed, and all part of the show.
Saison = Seasons, so the menus change with those Seasons, and often more often, predicated on what is available, so what we had, however good, will likely be very different, when you dine there.
Now, the food was very good, the plating creative, and visually interesting (especially the flatware, which changed completely, with the course), the wines very nice (and in great stemware too - Zalto), and other than the awkward nature of serving, at our table, the entire experience very good - but very good is not what dining at Saison should be about. It should be about an extraordinary full dining experience, but that fell short this time. Unfortunately, Saison fell out of our “top three restaurants” in San Francisco, but on this trip, one other, which was just barely in our top ten, Coi, rose to take its place.
Service is way too fast
We came here for a late Valentine’s Day dinner and had been wanting to try Saison for quite some time. Loved the intimacy of the restaurant and that we sat right in front of the kitchen. Attention to service was totally on point...some of the most friendly and cordial staff I’ve come across. And there is absolutely no question as to the refinement and flavors of the food...I teared up a few of times during the meal, namely with the crab, brioche bread, radish salad and rhubarb dessert.
HOWEVER, we went through 12 courses in about an hour! And these portions are not so small that you still feel hungry. That ruins the meal in two ways: one doesn’t get to savor the dish at hand nor get a breather to reset for the next one. It became so ridiculous that when served the buckwheat tea at the end of the meal, I went to use the restroom. Upon returning, my cup was gone as well as my napkin. SLOW DOWN!!!
Unmemorable
The dining service was superb and hit the right balance between prepping table for the next course, briefly explaining the dish and anticipating the diners need without being overly pretentious. The food was good but not memorable. At the end of the meal, the waiter asked my favorite part of the eleven course meal and I drew a blank. For the price (excluding the usual surcharge for being in SF), the experience was not worth the cost. It pains me to describe it as unmemorable.
