Word of mouth
Heard about this place from a fellow guest. I’m a lasagna king and this was by far the best I ever had. Homemade past and sauce and cheese from Italy. Don’t miss it! Great Italian wine list too

The Hostess reminded me of the airline attendant from the movie “Meet the Fockers” when she wouldn’t let actor Ben Stiller on the airplane even though he was the only person waiting to board his flight. We arrived at 5:15 pm for a 5:30 reservation and I could see that there was more empty tables than people at tables, but she stated that we were early and had to wait… outside of the restaurant. When I mentioned that there were many open tables she sternly told me to step outside and wait until called. It was really funny, for a minute. When we were called inside for our reservation I found the restaurant very ordinary and pretentious all at the same time. I would not recommend this restaurant for anyone wanting a pleasant environment.

When we arrived, there were about 20 people waiting in front- not for a walk-in table, but for their reservations. We waited about 25 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. Then, it was 45 minutes to get our drinks- the waitperson said she was also the bartender. After another 25 minutes, I inquired about our appetizers; the waitperson admitted she forgot to put the order in, but would rush them. In another 15 minutes, they arrived- four minutes before our entrees. The entrees: my son's gnocchi were so burnt they were inedible. We had to send them back, and the waitperson brought more out 10 minutes later, saying we would not be charged for them. Alas, we were. My wife's lasagna was also burnt, but she was able to cut it off and still have enough to eat. My daughter's pasta with beef ragu had chunks of meat the size of small steaks in it. My grandfather was a chef from Italy, and this is not how ragu is supposed to be. On the other hand, my pasta was excellent, and the waitperson comped us dessert. We had excellent service at other restaurants in Maui, but when you see waitstaff running, as they did here, something is wrong.

The BEST meal for my family of 5! We had four different kinds of pizza and one special which consisted of sea bass and zoodles. Everything was delicious. We sat at the bar because we didn’t have reservations but our bartender/server Kelsey was so accommodating. 5+ stars for this amazing restaurant!
Be the first to ReplySurprised to find great Italian food here !
Very authentic pasta and pizza like in Italy....Great Italian wine selection...Nice drink menu...The pasta with Saffron was unusually good..The branzino fish is a new favorite ....Good waitstaff.....
Be the first to ReplyLow quality for the price
We ordered past and pizza for pick up. The sausage on the pizza was crumbled and dry, it did not look appetizing. The cheese pasta was flavorless. It was fine, but just not our favorite food on the island. And for the price I expected much better quality.
Be the first to ReplyNot the 5 star experience we expected.
With all the 5 star reviews I regret to say I was disappointed. I expected the food to be outstanding. Maybe we ordered the wrong items. We started with the Buffalo Insalata Caprese which was ok, not memorable, as well as the Chicken Liver Crostini, which was excellent. For entrees, my husband chose the Gnocchi Quattro Fromaggi which was very good. I chose the Spaghettini Neri con Gamberi specifically for the delicious squid-ink sea and umami flavors I've experienced in other restaurants. It just wasn't there. Yes, the pasta was black, but the squid-ink flavor was missing. In other restaurants, the squid ink flavoring was in the sauce, not in the pasta itself. Perhaps that made the difference. We didn't bother with dessert and probably won't go back.

Loved it. Great atmosphere. Pizzza was terrific.. Our waitress, Stephanie, was wonderful. I was not crazy about the shrimp dish
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Homemade Pasta
We had never tried Sale Pepe until this evening, even though we knew they were in Lahaina several years ago. It’s probably because it does not face the ocean and is located in a strip mall. We were in the mood for Italian food and were reminded of their existence when we read great reviews online. They make all of their own pasta and also specialize in thin crust pizza. We shared a Caprese salad and the Chicken Liver Pate on Crostini—both were delicious! My entree was Gnocchi Quattro—it was so yummy! Joe’s entree was Squid Ink Spaghetti served with local shrimp and a spicy Calabrian salami paste. He loved it. We’ll definitely return on our next visit to Maui.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing
This place is totally overrated, and I cannot understand why there is a line outside the door. I live in Chicago, where you can find incredible Neapolitan-style pizza for $14-16 a pie, so perhaps I am biased, but I didn't expect to pay $24+ for a totally average, overcooked (meaning dry and burned on the sides) pizza . In addition, our crostini was thick like garlic bread, making it impossible to eat with the shrimp topping, and the burrata appetizer did not come with bread--instead we had to pay for three small pieces of subpar pita. But the food was not the only disappointment, it was the general attitude of the place towards its customers. Let me elaborate. After we received our bottle of wine, the power in much of the town went out and we were told the kitchen was closed. Given that we literally had one sip of wine, the server could have said it was on the house, retained the bottle, and sent us on our way. Instead, we had to pay for the entire bottle, which we were told we could take home. At this point we didn't really want the wine, but we didn't have the choice. Despite this, we still wanted to see what all the hype was about so we asked if we could reschedule for the following evening. The hostess said the wifi was not working so she could not make a reservation, but our server promised to get in touch the following day and squeeze us in. She never did. Instead we had to make our own reservation, eating much later than we hoped (the only opening was at 8:15). We returned the following evening, and while the service was good we had hoped that, in light of the inconveniences the evening before, the restaurant might have given us a free appetizer, dessert, or even glass of wine (we did tell our server about the previous evening so she did know). However, we received nothing of the sort; that is, no kind gesture acknowledging that we mattered as guests (FYI: I have worked in food service for 30 years, including at the Four Seasons Hotel, so I know that these small gestures are not burdensome for restaurant owners, but really make a difference for guests). In short, this place seems, unfortunately, to be more concerned with the bottom line than their guests.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic, great food
If you want a local place with great food this is the restaurant. Great wine, great food and great desert. Order the homemade bread (off menu) and this will start a great meal.
Be the first to ReplyBest Lasagna Ever
Sale Pepe is a real treat. The food here is fantastic. I felt like I was in heaven with the lasagna. The salami appetizer was great as well. Friendly not pretentious place with great food.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food; rely on Kelly for wine advice.
Though we have friends who visit Maui every year none of them mentioned Sale Pepe and we stumbled on this place by ourselves. Arancini to die for. My wife makes a lasagna that beats almost every Italian place we have visited, but this was spectacular. Oozing cheeses, a light tomato sauce and tender meat. Just delicious. My hand made twisted pasta with beef cheeks in a Barolo reduction was almost as good. We did not like the wine special so our waitress, Kelly, recommended a reasonably priced Montepulciano that was light and flavorful and paired very well with the main courses.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
My family and I have been dining at Sale Pepe's for years. We have a home in Lahaina and I was excited to bring 4 of my friends, who were visiting from California, for dinner. I understand that the main chef was off on that night but there was no excuse for the experience that we had. We ordered the chicken liver on toast which was cold. The bread was so hard I think it was stale. The pizza (the nights special) was flavorless and basically just tomato sauce with globs of cheese on pizza crust. Very unappetizing to look at and even worse to taste. The lentil salad was raw. The shrimp and pasta was extremely over cooked. The pasta tasted as though it had been just sitting in water and the shrimp was extremely bland. The worst, however, was the meatballs. They were served cold. We sent them back three times, and each time, they were still cold. We eventually gave up. Sale Pepe's had been one of my favorite restaurants on the island. While the service that evening was good, I am so very disappointed in the food.
Be the first to ReplyBetter food than Italy
We couldn’t have had a better experience. The server was charming, the food authentic and delicious and the prices moderate. The coffee, Italian of course, was the best we’ve had in Hawaii.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre Food & Service
We were on the island for work and chose Sale Pepe for the high reviews. Honestly, we didn’t see what the raves were all about. We had a reservation but still waited 20 minutes for a table. Staff (server & front desk) was cold and snobby. Of the many other places we ate on the island, this was the only place in two weeks of our stay, that had unfriendly & rushed staff. Seemed like a tourist trap to us. Pizza crust was burned and server didn’t bat an eyelash when she put it on the table. We didn’t send it back as we just wanted to eat & go! Paid $30 for a medium sized, burned pizza! Only thing good was the cold beer. Won’t return again as it wasn’t the typical laid-back Maui experience.
Be the first to ReplySome meals were good.
4 of us went for dinner. We were hesitant because of a previous dinner there. Some of our meals were very good but the creamy pasta had a thick sauce. Almost curdled. Not sure if we would give it another try . Free parking at Lahaina Shopping Center.
