Once again, I was skeptical of this restaurant due to recent negative reviews. Perhaps I’m just lucky, but this restaurant was authentic, organised and overall amazing. The staff were some of the friendliest that I have met whilst in London, and they were enthusiastic and passionate. The food… where do I even begin?! I ordered the Tagliolini con Granchio and I was absolutely blown away! The dish was authentic, fresh, and delicious. My mother ordered the Risotto San Carlo and 2 scoops of lemon sorbet for dessert, and she reported that they were both incredibly fresh and delicious as well! Absolutely returning here when I am back in London.

I was really looking forward to visiting San Carlo for the first time as I knew the chain had a good reputation, this was the perfect time as we were in London celebrating my husbands birthday. The staff were all lovely but the service was quite poor, felt like we constantly had to flag someone down to request anything. The wine was served warm and I had to ask for ice to add to it and then both of our meals were really cold when served. We both had a pasta dish, they were tasty but not as nice as they could have been if they were hot. I did mention it and we were given a free desert, this was appreciated but I think if they focused on getting the little details right it would be a better experience for their customers. We won’t be rushing to visit another San Carlo after this experience.

San Carlo serves the same best of Italian cuisine as does its nearby sibling (Cicchetti on Piccadilly), but in a somewhat less hectic, less crowded and quieter ambiance. The selection of very reasonably priced Italian cuisine is so broad that a hard selection decision is demanded. My wife chose the freshest tomato and onion salad (although the olive oil seemed very light) followed by spaghetti Puttanesca. My choices of beef carpaccio, fettuccine Alfredo and veal scaloppine limone were equally delicious. It appears that the restaurant manages its reservation timing exceptionally well as, although the restaurant was essentially sold out, there was a regular stream of new arrivals as tables were cleared so that there was no waiting on arrival. The Captain was a solicitous man of elegance and the waiters were friendly, efficient and well trained - although there were a couple of glitches on the water and digestif orders which were immediately corrected when they were pointed out. It was a pleasant evening with well timed service of the courses to provide for diner enjoyment not accelerated table turnover.

Extremely bad service. Average Food. Expensive. Located at Regent Street near Piccadilly Circle, they benefit from the location to rip customers off. Never again!
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal, shame about the cocktails.
We were a party of 4 adults, with one dairy & nut allergy. We ordered a bolognaise, a carbonara & Spaghetti vongole, which were all delicious. The fourth dish, was a vegan dish, which I think was a squash pasta, again delicious but the portion was on the small side. The staff were helpful with confirming a dish to conform to our allergy requirement. We were there for my birthday so 2 of us chose a signature cocktail as a treat. However, I wouldn’t recommend trying the signature cocktails unless you are really sure of the flavours. We tried a Pinkalicious & a Gold Digger. In my opinion, both were undrinkable, so an expensive mistake at £14 each! My only regret is that I didn’t raise it with the restaurant. I think you need a new signature cocktail taster, whilst I would order known cocktails, I wouldn’t risk another signature cocktail. Overall, a lovely ambience & great food but let down by the signature drinks.
Be the first to ReplyMaitre d’ and server ruined the experience
Hostess wonderful. Sat us right away even though we arrived at 930pm. Very welcoming. Pasta Fagioli was good. Burrata was good but definitely needed more than 3 small tomato wedges. Drinks were ok.
Server ignored us most of the time. He was not busy . He Was standing talking to a couple for 15-20 minutes.
Bus person cleared our plates, took our dessert order and got us more drinks and then the bill. She was great!
Server still couldn’t be bothered with us so the maitre d’ ran our card and asked us if we wanted to add gratuity. We saw that gratuity was included and asked him about that. He then said that gratuity was for the chef and tablecloths and that additional money would go to the sever. Seriously? Do you think we are idiots? Extremely insulting. Yes we are Americans but we were extremely respectful the whole time even though we were treated terribly by the server and Maitre d’.
We have traveled and have never been treated like that! Really disappointing.
Excellent
Our experience at San Carlo was very different than others have described in recent reviews.
We had lunch on March 28. The weather was lovely so we sat outside. My wife and I shared an appetizer, burrata with Sicilian tomatoes. For her entre, my wife ordered Risotto San Carlo (risotto with porcini mushrooms and parma ham) and I ordered the Tagliatelle Bolognese. All of the food was delicious and the service was excellent.
We look forward to returning soon.
£46 for an hour long wait, a forgotten order and microwaved lasagna
I rarely see my father, so as a special occasion we decided to visit San Carlo for dinner.
We ordered olives and bread, calamari and mozzarella for starters, two portions of lasagna for our main courses, and two small glasses of wine.
The maître d' took our order, and only the calamari and mozzarella arrived.
45 minutes went by, and nothing. We checked with the maître d' and it became clear that the order has not been submitted. Had we not alerted them, I don’t know how long we’d have waited.
Sadly I had to leave due to work commitments, and we had to cancel the lasagna order. They quickly made it for and gave it to us in takeaway containers. The lasagna was clearly microwaved and looked disgusting. See the photo I attached to this reviews
The maître d' apologised and blamed the waiter who was on his first day. We saw him discipline the new waiter openly despite the maître d' taking our order, very unprofessional and certainly not leading by example trying to pass on the blame.
And for this whole experience, we were charged £46! £46 for two starters and two small glasses of wine. The bread and olives never arrived. We were lucky they didn’t charge us service charge or the lasagnas, how courteous…I hope you will set things right and rectify this genuinely upsetting experience.
Awful truly awful
As Vince & Fiona have already said we had an absolutely dreadful experience on Saturday 19th March. We were celebrating my birthday with our close friends and received such terrible service, as previously said by other diners that night the food was mediocre, the service was appalling and the wait was long. Having visited the Manchester branch a couple of times previously we thought we were in for a fab night!!!!
The only upside was that we had a long chat and laugh with Vince and his lovely family who were there to celebrate his daughters 18th. Would have had much better service and food in one of our local restaurants.
£130 FOR BELOW AVERAGE QUALITY….
I’ve been to San Carlos several times..but this will be the last time. This restaurant has been reduced to a chaotic & below average dining experience. They shouldn’t associate the word “Italian” as it’s a insult, I could eat far better & cheaper at a true Italian restaurant.
•Tabled booked for 20:15 Table ready for 20:45
•Drinks order 20:20 server 21:10
•Food
-bruschetta bland !
-calamari cold
-steak £30 I asked for medium rare it was Rare
-pasta cold !
Overall we paid £130 for what I’d describe as bland & cold food.
Nightmare on Regent Street!
Having visited San Carlo several times in the past we decided to celebrate a friend's birthday here. What a mistake and what a huge disappointment! Never have we experienced such chaotic, unprofessional, farcical and incompetent service in our lives. After being seated at just after 8.00 pm and promptly ordering our drinks they eventually arrived at 9..15 pm. The wine was incorrect and the two beers were forgotten. After complaining several times starters finally arrived one and a half hours after placing our order. Out of the four ordered, two were completely incorrect, pointed this out to a waiter who had literally no understanding of the menu and second attempt arrived 10 minutes later. This too was incorrect! Eventually accepted third attempt at starter. Our main courses were lukewarm and mediocre. A truly awful and frustrating experience!
We were given a free bottle of wine and two beers - scant compensation for a ruined evening. On the plus side, there was a great 'war atmosphere' in the restaurant All the enraged diners joining together to share their horror stories of the evening!
So sad to see a once fab restaurant reduced to an embarrassment to the San Carlo name and standards of service.
Poor food, dreadful service, disgusting toilets and even senior staff complaining to their guests about the chaotic running of the restaurant.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Shocking !!!!!!
Calamitous !!!!!! Like a scene from faulty towers !!!
This was meant to be a celebration of our daughters 18th birthday and her choice of restaurant on my recommendation based on Manchester !!!!!
Service was beyond shocking, actually felt sorry for the waiters as even they agreed it was poor !
The only saving grace was that tables either side of us had equally poor service, worse in actual fact and I hope they write a review too !
Thanks to the table to our right we managed to find time to laugh and celebrate but please save your money….either drive to Manchester or try one of London’s many other fine places to dine !
For the record food was average and this is the first review I have ever left such is the extent of how I feel about it
Happy birthday Sue and thanks for sharing our evening and making us laugh !
PS If there was a kebab shop next door we would have all ended up in there !
Sorry San Carlo but the reviews say it all !
Very good
The service and food were excellent. The restaurant was very busy but staff were efficient and attentive. Lovely meal.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service!
The service at San Carlo has to be the worst I have ever experienced. The front of house manager (short, with grey hair) was overly solicitous and tactile, almost to the point of being inappropriate, when we arrived. Our starter and drinks arrived fairly promptly but we waited 55 minutes for our main courses to arrive. We asked a number of the waiting staff about the delay but they never came back with an explanation. We asked to see the front of house manager (short, grey hair) and he instantly became rude, aggressive and, quite frankly, intimidating. During the course of the evening we noticed that we were not the only guests to receive such treatment, and on two occasions the guests walked out! Clearly there is a problem with this manager and unfortunately his attitude has permeated through to the waiting staff. I have read many of the reviews, and this seems to be a common problem, with many reviews referencing this person.

Leonardo gave us premium service!!!
We came not long before the Kitchen closed and they still accepted us.
Leonardo was on hand and made us feel comfortable the whole night. 10/10
Great pre theatre meal
We arrived unbooked on Friday at 16.00 and asked for a table for 2. The front of house staff were friendly and accommodating and have us table to about 17.45. A very good meal and attentive staff.

Post matinee meal, so in the restaurant before 5.30. First impressions beautifully laid out tables and smart looking staff. However all seemed to go down hill from there on!
It seemed they had some new staff that were being trained, and those that we interacted with seemed unsure when we asked questions about some of the menu etc. We had to prompt our waiter to bring our drinks over, as they were sitting ready on the bar for some time, and we also made the mistake of accepting water when asked. Which without requesting a jug of tap water we were served a bottle of still water (at £5.05 come on!). Food when it arrived was disappointing, my main a lasagne was dry and overcooked, and my wife's carbonara was heavily over seasoned with pepper, and the pancetta was 99% fat (I assume they used pancetta it could have been anything). On pointing this out we were told it was fatty because it was from the cheek. Just a suggestion to the management, when a customer makes a comment or complaint regarding a dish, they should not be challenged on their opinion. In fairness they agreed the lasagne was dry and this was removed from the bill, however the apology was muted. If in the area would I visit again, sadly no.
Very tasty Italian in Central London
Lovely birthday meal with my family at this restaurant. First time visiting and I will be back. Food was gorgeous and authentic, staff were great and very attentive. Would highly recommend

We were a party of 4 for lunch on a Wednesday. The restaurant was pretty busy. Service was very efficient without being intrusive. The food was excellent ranging from Calamari, Carpaccio to fresh Pasta, Saltimbocca and Ribeye perfectly medium rare. Deserts were just as good. This is a cut above Italian restaurant that fully retains its heritage. Expensive yes but bearing in mind the location is not unreasonably priced. Thoroughly recommended.

Spent my birthday celebrations at this wonderful restaurant recommended by concierge at The Dilly hotel nearby.
We had the most fun evening, the staff were super funny and made us feel very special.
Had the sauté potatoes, which were designed nicely in the shape of melon balls ! V nice :)
Definitely would go back, even just to meet all the staff again
Thank you
Really slow and poor customer service. Food was ok (when it arrived)
Went to San Carlo, St James last night for a pre theatre meal. Table was booked for 5.00pm but half the party arrived early. The restaurant was virtually empty. They gave us menus but then left us for 20mins not even asking if we would like to order drinks. We had to ask to order drinks. The rest of the party arrived at 5.00pm. We were going to have starters and mains, but our waiter told us we could only have them if they came together, as we had told the restaurant that we would need to leave promptly to get to the theatre. We agreed. The waiter had advised at the beginning that their fryer had broken, so no frites, calamari etc. However, when we came to order , a lot of other menu choices were also not available. We ordered before 5.30pm. We eventually got our food about 6.30pm. We had started to ask when any of our food would arrive at 6.15pm - at this point our waiter seemed to be blaming us for the problem as “we were a large group (10) and the fact that they were busy”. By 6.15pm they were now busy but they certainly had not been for the first one and a half hours of our visit. The food when it arrived was fine, some dishes better than others. They told us they would give us a free dessert - I told them I didn’t want one, just the bill. They brought it anyway , which delayed the bill even further. I had to go to the counter to get the bill compiled so we could leave. To be fair the manager discounted our food, without me asking. However, the experience was a poor one - we had to prompt for everything- our drinks, our food, our bill and whenever we asked we were given the very shoddy impression that it was our fault, not the restaurant’s. In London, for a restaurant in this price range you can do better.

The food was mostly very good. I enjoyed the truffle gnocchi in particular and the arancini and donuts were also very tasty, although the portions of everything were small. I really liked the atmosphere, decor and ambiance. It was busy and loud but you could still hear eachother.
But the service was not good. We had to wait ages and catch their attention all the time. It was always us having to call them. They were never actively looking around or helping. They didn't do check backs on the food or bring dessert menus. We would have had another 2 or 3 cocktails but the service was so slow. Drinks took ages to arrive - 20 minutes for our second round of drinks. It was busy to be fair, but there were also waiters standing around talking.
When we did actually have some interaction with waiters, one of the waiters was rude. I asked for some tomato sauce or mayo for my fries. He said I don't need them because they have truffle. I said I would like them anyway. He said no.
Ermmmm? Pretty sure you should try to do what the customer would like? I would like some sauce with my fries. In my opinion they were a bit dry and would have been better with sauce.
When you're paying £23 for a vegetarian tortellini and £13 for a start, you expect better service.
It's a similar price point to The Ivy. Considering the service, just go to the Ivy. They are much more helpful and attentive. I enjoyed the food and had a nice evening but wouldn't go back.
Disappointed
Was looking forward to take my wife and daughter to this restaurant, was a huge disappointment. Their service really disappointing us with poor attention.
