Restaurant is still consistent!
Be the first to ReplyWe enjoyed our dinner very much.
Excellent service, unique atmosphere with high ceilings and lots of space between tables. Just be aware that this is not your typical sushi bar Japanese restaurant. We ordered appetizers, tempura and then a soba set for each person. The soba portions are big. I would definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyGorgeous interior, underwhelming food.
You walk into high ceilings, impressive decor, and beautiful presentation of food. But the food is underwhelming. I ordered the eel soba. It was a cold dish, but because of the serving temperature, the eel felt hard and chewy instead of tender. The texture of the noodles felt off too - perhaps cooked for too long? We ordered the matcha tiramisu for dessert and enjoyed it more than the meal.
Be the first to ReplyVery good noodles overall, especially if you want cold.
Top go-to spot for cold noodles. For hot, there are more options, but still great quality.Tempura is crisp and crunchy. Mochi was not overly frozen. Salad was fresh, albeit very small. The bar is excellent with a large variety.

We have never been to a Soba noodle shop before so this was all new to us. The soba noodles were very good but the broth stole the show. It was cold and rainy out and this was a huge bowl of warm comfort. Our least favorite part of the bowl was the pork belly (Mori Kurobuta). It just didn't have much flavor or texture. I would go with the mushroom if I had another visit (Mori Kinoko). Still just a small complaint on an otherwise spectacular meal. The staff there was also so kind, friendly and attentive to our needs. The tempura veggies and shrimp were a nice compliment to the soup. A table near us had the cold noodles and they looked like they held together better than the noodles soaking in the broth. Luckily I had a spoon to tackle the shrinking noodles (not an expert with chopsticks). Our appetizers were pretty amazing as well. I had the Niku Dango (waygu meatballs in sweet and sour sauce). The meatballs were an explosion of flavor. Texture on the outside and inside was moist and melted in you mouth. Great bite, and I had four of them! Sauce was pretty basic sweet and sour - better than store bought of course but the flavor I was used to. My wife's sashimi (tuna and yellowtail) were very fresh and presented very nicely.Dessert was fine but we were honestly pretty full from the soup! My wife liked the ice cream Mochi and I had the Black Sesame Blancmange (think sesame creme brulee) because I enjoy all things creme brulee.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a hidden gem.
The ambience is SO nice, the service is great and the food is amazing. They specialize in soba noodles.. and I've had the hot and cold ones and they're so good. But everything else on the menu is also delicious. I went a month or so ago and was dreaming about it again so just went back. Also their mochi is so good and notable mention that their toilet seats are heated which is lovely. They also have sushi that melts in your mouth. Not one to write reviews but really a great spot to check out!
Be the first to ReplyLong overdue review but I came here for a birthday dinner
Long overdue review but I came here for a birthday dinner with three of my girlfriends during restaurant week last summer. It was $60PP and this comes with appetizer, entree and dessert. We started with some drinks -- we got the Hanasaka (Shochu, Lillet Rose, Watermelon, Agave, Lime, Shiso, Prosecco Rose) and another drink I don't quite remember but it had tequila. Both were delicious! Just the right amount of "strong" without getting too tipsy after finishing. The app we all chose was salmon carpaccio which was fresh and flavorful. It had the perfect amount of citrus flavor. The soba set we had came with vegetable tempura alongside a hot, duck dipping sauce. Usually other places the duck would be overcooked from being in the dipping sauce but the duck was perfect and tender! The green tea dessert was also yummy and came in a cute little box. I do wish the portions were a bit larger for the price being paid, but altogether, it was a very elevated dining experience. The interior is spacious, clean, and feels intimate. Even the bathrooms were super nice, lol. I would recommend for a nice date spot or to catch up with some girlfriends!

I had a fantastic dining experience at Sarashina Horii this evening! I came to not only try the two types of soba, but to also compare as both cold and hot! The server was extremely patient with me as I explained what I hoped to do. And she went back to the kitchen multiple times to confirm how I could be accommodated. Even when I put in my order - after she warned that I might be ordering too much - the manager (I think) came over to make sure. What wonderful service ... and both types of soba were very good, cold as well as hot. The duck I also ordered was also much enjoyed, and the accompanying sauce was terrific! Oh, and the sobayu was quite good on its own on this chilly evening!Thank you, Sarashina Horii team!
Be the first to ReplyI had the Kaisen Cold soba which was such a treat.
It was basically a chirashi don with soba instead of rice instead. It was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyFood is 3.
5 stars but the ambiance and service were so wonderful that it deserved a big bump up. Came here on a Sunday night at 5 and had the whole place to ourselves until nearly 6. It was so lovely to be in such a quiet, spacious, and calming room. The service was also wonderful - very warm, friendly, and attentive. Onto the food... For $100 we got the tasting menu which came with a lot of food and a lot of variety. The flavors were a bit on the sweet side (the green beans, mushrooms, eggplant, even the dipping sauce for the tempura...etc) which I didn't like, but aside from that, it was a decent meal. My favorite savory item was the soba which was pretty good and that's something I would order that again. However I wouldn't do the shrimp tower, which came with a large pile of tempura breading and not that much shrimp. My husband got the more typical prawn and veggie combination, which looked much better. Lastly, I really liked the black sesame crème brûlée type dessert - highly recommend! The matcha tiramisu had a bit too much cream but was otherwise ok.
Be the first to ReplyA soba spot with all of the energy of a fine dining
A soba spot with all of the energy of a fine dining restaurant, but none of the stuffiness! We came on a rainy Sunday for a late lunch, and the restaurant was mostly empty. Our waiter was super friendly and very attentive throughout the whole meal. Because it was my first time here, I opted for the lunch tasting. The food was not bad, but I've definitely had better soba sets in the city before. The small bites at the start were a great way to start the meal, and the "sashimi" (more like a tataki) was delightfully balanced. The vegetable tempura was solid - delicate, as tempura should be, and not too oily, but the ebi was only okay, and was a little bit soggy. The soba itself was also pretty good, although I think it could have been cooked a bit less - I would've liked a bit more chew. It was also a bit thinner than I was used to, but this helped cling onto the dipping broth, which was wonderfully umami. The duck wasn't as pronounced as I thought it would be, and it felt a bit overpowered by the shoyu, but overall it wasn't bad. The duck itself was not that great; it was pretty dry.The lunch set was 55, which was a bit on the pricier side, but it was a nice way to experience what they had to offer. I'd probably opt for the regular mori soba set with some yasai tempura next time, but I certainly plan on coming back.
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance and the service were very delightful.
The food less so. I got the $55 lunch tasting menu with ebi tempora and the cold sarashina noodles with mushroom. The ebi tempura was simply rubbery and not fresh. Now taste is very subjective, so yours might not match mine. I like bolder, salter favors. The noodles were generally good. The noodles per se were very good. The broth was delicate in flavor. The kobachi (seasonal appetizer) was a cheese like tofu with mushrooms and scallions. I didn't think the cheese like tofu itself was anything remarkable, it might as well be real cheese. There was no taste to it, it was for texture. The enoki mushrooms, finely sliced scallions and the dashi like sauce was very good. The carpaccio was amber jack with micro greens. The amber jack was had no flavor (perhaps amber jack has no flavor). The micro greens were nice. The miso dressing were standard. The mochi was nice but it was just way too frozen.

Came for restaurant week recently, and while the food was good and the decor was stunning, it was nothing to write home about. The restaurant week deal was a good value, but what was supposed to be the star of the show - the soba - was kind of a let down. I have had better elsewhere, including at Ise in Cooper Square.
Be the first to Replyif you are a big eater, would not recommend.
but a great date spot. loved the interior and atmosphere. the (fake) japanese garden in the back, bidets toilets even. had hand towels that grow when you add water to themvery attentive service. they come out with the soba and explain how to eat it too. after soba noodles were finished, they come out with a canister of hot water for you to add to the soup base to drink drinks- delectable. would recommend getting the more unique ones esp that have japanese alcohol, the persimmon one was unique and quite goodsoba- opted for cold soba. the mixed shrimp cold soba only came with three pieces. the duck & leek soba was none too salty and tasteful, but the duck was very tough. noodles do not stick together too much to separatedessert- hojicha blancmange was divine

We got the $55 tasting menu for lunch and would highly recommend! Come hungry - you get more food than you'd expect for the price. We thought typical to nyc each dish would be pretty small but honestly the sashimi, tempura and soba were all pretty sizable portions. Very much enjoyed the soba noodles, and the broth was light (I added some spicy flakes for a little kick). However, the duck was just ok so next time I may try the mushroom. I've had more tender duck, though I will admit the slices here were all very evenly/nicely sliced and each piece had a little bit of fat in it which was tasty. The vegi tempura included a nice selection - green beans, shishito pepper, lotus root, yam and eggplant. Very perfectly fried with daikon/sauce to dip or just basic salt to sprinkle on if that's the way you like it. The starter tofu is really unique - almost has a cheese like texture but really good especially with the thinly sliced scallions and marinated enoki mushrooms. Sashimi also was really good - Lots if sliced per person and not overwhelming with sauce. Service was also great - very attentive and helpful. So overall a great experience and would come back.
Be the first to ReplyVery good experience.
The decor is simply relaxing. I went on an evening where my dinner guest and I were the only ones dining pretty much. Maybe that added to the relaxing, zen-feeling. The food is good also. I didn't do the tasting menu, but ordered a variety from all parts of the menu. In general, everything was above average. The highlight, obviously, is the soba. The next time I go here I'll stick to just the soba. Worth a stop if you want some quality soba.

If it's any indication of how much we liked this place - we came back one week later after our first visit. The indoor space is beautiful and relaxing. The soba is the most authentic we've had since being in Japan. So fresh and the texture is perfect. The cocktails are delicious. Matcha tiramisu is excellent. Yes it is on the pricey side but worth it for the quality and overall experience. We'll be coming back for sure.
Be the first to ReplyAlongside this week's freezing temperatures, I found myself
Alongside this week's freezing temperatures, I found myself craving a hot bowl of soba. This happens to be a great time to book a reservation in NYC. With the tourists mostly gone and the local population recovering from covid, it was easy to snag a table at Sarashina Horii in the main dining room at the height of dinner sevice. My partner and I opted to split the tasting menu, and we ordered the special kawari cold soba as well, which features shiso kneaded into the dough from which the noodles are made. Two 4 oz pours of Nakanaka on the rocks to whet our appetites. The chef's choice 5 appetizers arrived first, a medley of intriguing dishes served in small portions but plenty to share. The soba tofu and marinated mushrooms were standouts. Next, the sashimi, tender and fresh, resonant with flavor. I used lots of the house-made wasabi, which is excellent. The mushroom tempura was a delicious fried treat. I liked that it came with a tempura shishito pepper, the eating of which was a novel and exciting experience. There was a pause after this dish before they brought out the Atlantic salmon entrée. Served atop mashed potatoes, this item seemed a little out of place, but it still tasted great. We were practically already full when the soba arrived, but still managed to finish both servings. The hot soba, with sarashina noodles, absolutely hit the spot. The occasional hints of yuzu were spectacular, and I drank every last drop of broth. The kawari soba did have a distinct flavor and aroma, both of which were accentuated by the accompanying sauce. Afterwards, the server poured the leftover soba water in cups for us to mix with the dipping sauce and drink. Dessert was the matcha tiramisu. Just when we thought we'd tasted everything, this decadent delight pushed us back into mouthgasm territory. Full and satisfied, we paid the bill and departed. Last night was even better than the first time we ate here and I would gladly do it again.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful restaurant.
I took my Japanese co-workers here and they all told me the food reminded them of home. You come here to have the soba but don't sleep on the other dishes like the grilled yellow tail collar and Japanese duck meatball
Be the first to ReplyAn ambience of elegance and zen with great jazz vibes.
Sarashina Horii is fast becoming a modern take on traditional Japanese soba along with techniques that rival dishes from Japan itself.Cocktails alone are artfully made with the mindfulness of dish pairings and high end base spirits. The greatest aspect of the libation selections are there broad range outside of just a Japanese focus. Favorite dishes to must try are there special of Kawari soba made with shiso (very unique) and the tempura is light, airy and very fulfilling. Even their sashimi selection rivals some of the best sushi restaurants in the city. My favorite was the delicate eel soba that melds so well. Service is top notch with every server being very informative and patient with explaining menu options. This is a white glove establishment with a less pretentious atmosphere.

Was one of the most delightful restaurant experience I've had in a long time.Service was delightful, Cocktail was fantastic and dramatically backlit background at the dinning room was stunning! Trust me when I say this but winter feels so much better with hot soba!

The restaurants ambiance was definitely more upscale than I was expecting. I ended up getting the classic kakiage soba - however the fried shrimp cluster was not what I was expecting. I think if you want the classic shrimp tempura it is not the kakiage. However, the soba sauce at this restaurant is not too salty which is often what you encounter, so I'm a big fan of this place. Overall one of the better soba places I've had in NYC so far, but I also haven't been to that many.
