Saravanaa Bhavan New York Reviews from The Last Year
Saravanaa Bhavan
Saravanaa Bhavan 81 Lexington Ave Two-Levels, Contrasting Views Choose your favorite Saravanaa Bhavan seating level. Check out, process, the two dining levels. This morning mostly men fill the upper level, including two with a NYC specialized high school look. Customers wear lots of colorful, catchy tops. One man's shirt reads "sole food." Another's shows the E=Mo². Downstairs (visible from upstairs) mostly families inhabit. One downstairs person wears a super long orange gown. Nearby two women, one with Indian visage, the other perhaps from Tibet, quietly digest their dishes together. Our three menu choices Rava Kichadi, Parotta (not Paratha), and Paneer Dosa, that together don't find enough space on our two-person table, all pass appealing taste tests. Most memorable of the three to this diner leaps Rava Kichadi, South Asian rice and lentil variation, a subtle mixture of various tastes, including betimes fine rava or cream of wheat or sooji, cooked with vegetables, spices, herbs and ghee. Hours later the portion of our Rava Kichadi brought home with us still retains all of its unique flavor. Even the heavy uniquely designed armory presence that still hangs out diagonally across the street cannot match Saravanaa Bhavan's Rava Kichadi.
This place is awesome, the food is delicious and service is
This place is awesome, the food is delicious and service is prompt...(almost too prompt, close to rushing sometimes with their turnover) but overall its a good place for south indian food. I personally enjoyed all the chutneys they serve with their dosa. The sambar is also very flavorful and delicious. The masala chai is also yummy as well. No complaints, aside from the occasionally rushed feeling but as always looking forward to the next visit here. Plentiful parking as well - but be mindful, it's on a steep incline/hill if anyone is differently abled its a strenuous from the parking lot to the door.
I was there l weekday lunch.
It was busy but no wait for table. This place continues to excel. Their service is well oiled. The food comes out great. This is the south Indian place to eat at.
Nicely crisp dosa
Nicely crisp dosa. Chutneys were flavorful. Reminded me of my first encounter with dosa in Bengaluru. Very satisfied for a quick lunch.
Service was fast and food was solid for a decent price.
Casual ambiance would definitely recommend for a quick meal. The filling and sauces were very satisfying and if you like a crunchier texture highly recommend the Rava dosas!
Thank you for serving south Indian food out of India!
we did have a dinner with family. it was less clean then ususal. I found during rush hours the food quality also gets effected. Other than that its great.
Poor service at saravana bhavan
One of the most unfriendly staff especially mahendra….he was very rude to my wife when she asked for a table of 4 when i was parking my car. He refused to give a table till i arrived. Where in the world this behavior is acceptable…they should be ashamed of themselves especially when they are reprenting a country like INDIA….they offer a bad reflection of our hospitality and what we mean when it comes to courtesy and hospitality. The management shld take serious note of this so that the name if saravana bhavan does not go down. Else god help you guys!!
Always my go-to place for authentic South-Indian.
Well, this time the Sambar was out of the world that I had to post this on Yelp! I went for a brunch on a Sunday and had the mini-tiffin. Glad there wasn't a wait time. The mini tiffin was the best thing that happened to me that day lol! The rava-kesari, the sambar, the mini sambar idly and the dosa, were cooked to perfection and served at the right time. The crowds kept getting busier so the quality of service started going down and we had to wait a little while to grab attention.
Excellent food.
Ambiance is as if you are in a restaurant in India. Minimum decor. Focus more on food and prompt service reasonable price
This masala dosa was everything my friend and I were
This masala dosa was everything my friend and I were craving. The dosa was both crispy and spongy, and the sauces were very flavorful. I would say the spice level is mild to medium. My friend said the place she goes to back home is much spicier but this was a comfortable level for the both of us. We walked in and all the tables were occupied, but the turnaround is so quick that we barely waited 10 minutes before being seated. Once we placed our orders, the food also came out in probably 10 minutes. We were in and out in 30 minutes or so, so I would recommend here if you are in a time crunch.
A great restaurant for South Indian food.
Ambiance: It feels very hole in the wall and sometimes those are the best places for authentic and delicious food. Food: The Mysore masala dosa, chutney, and sambhar was delicious. It's probably one of the best I've had in the city. As an appetizer, we ordered the fried idli which were excellent, I do wish they were a little crispier. We also got the pav bhaji which I found to be underwhelming, it's not something I'd recommend. Price: Prices are very reasonable and it's easy to get a meal for less than $20.
I used to like Saravana Bhavan.
I may like it in the future, too. But this particular SB (Lexington Street location in NY) is the absolute worst food I had in any Saravana Bhavan. Whoever was in the kitchen was distracted when they were adding spice or mixing up the Table Spoon for the Tea Spoon. Everything was spicy beyond imagination. We could complete nothing and left almost as hungry as we came in.
We stopped here for a quick bite & were not disappointed.
Nice vegetarian restaurant. Service was good & food came out quickly. It was sad while we were eating lunch, they had to lock down the restaurant as they had someone from the health department come & shut down the place. Don't know what the violation's were but we ate our lunch & questioned what we ate was not contaminated. This was about 4 months back & I sincerely hope they fixed all the citations & are running a clean kitchen. We enjoyed our food & would definitely come back again when we visit NY. I am sure things will be better next time.
During our visit to New York, we were yearning for some
During our visit to New York, we were yearning for some delicious South Indian cuisine. A quick Google search led us to Saravanaa Bhavan nearby. Opting for the masala dosa accompanied by a side of filter coffee, I was delighted with the generously-sized and perfectly crispy dosa. The diverse array of chutneys complemented the dosa well, especially the flavorful potato masala and the refreshing tomato chutney. The filter coffee was an authentic treat, not overly strong but a perfect complement to the meal. Surprisingly, the portion sizes were substantial. If you find yourself in the area, I highly recommend trying out this restaurant for an authentic South Indian culinary experience.
Food is good service is better and ambience is good too.
However, their billing technique is confusing. But overall, it was a good experience.
Diss/thali as served in India
The only excellent dosa/thali restaurant we’ve found in many decades of living in NY. Reminds us of the many similar meals we’ve enjoyed in India and London. Also efficient, friendly service. Bravi!

Saravanaa Bhavan is a chain and it's one of my favorite
Saravanaa Bhavan is a chain and it's one of my favorite places to get dosa that I keep coming back to. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu, but I love their masala dosa, mysore dosa, and paper masala dosa. Their chutneys that get served with each dosa are incredibly tasty and my favorite is the coconut chutney. Service is usually pretty fast.
Very fast service
I am not a dosa expert. Here you can get many varieties, though most contain mashed potatoes, accompanied by four dipping sauces. This branch of the worldwide chain is always crowded.
I was on a work trip to NY and wanted to try Saravana
I was on a work trip to NY and wanted to try Saravana Bhavan as soon as possible many people talk about how good it is in this area. This review is especially for the Lexington Street location. It is a very tiny restaurant like a quick grab and go work lunch types. The restaurant is clean and the service is good. Now coming to food. Everything we tried was super spicy. So much that we couldn't finish our meal. Had to just gulp the desert and lots of water to cool us down.
The food was good but the portions for the sides are
The food was good but the portions for the sides are ridiculous. The amount of sambar and masala they gave us doesn't even last for half of the dosa and when we told them, they said we have to pay extra for more... they were so rude. The ambience is fine but clearly they are money grabbers. The sambar is thick and bland. The pav bhaji was good though (not pictured here)
Great South Indian Vegetarian food New York
Outstanding South Indian food bang in middle of New York Very authentic and swift service Very tasty and fresh Dosa Idli and Thali meals Masala Dosa was great Through an external service we even got delivered second day to down town in a Manhattan hotel ! If you are South Indian vegetarian foodies great place Don’t go for ambience Go for quality of food
The home of the dosa.
This is a South Indian chain providing standard vegetarian fare, served in stainless steel trays (thali). Most of their restaurants are located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with a large majority being in the city of Chennai and a few in the national capital in Delhi. Outside of India Saravanaa Bhavan has restaurants in the Middle East, parts of EU, UK and the USA, among others Their main fare is the dosa which is a gluten free, thin crepe made from a batter of naturally fermented rice and lentils. And the dosa is presented in their menu in every conceivable permutation and combination - with and without spicy, mashed potatoes (masala), cheese, clarified butter (ghee), onions, sesame and so on. The dosa is served with three different coloured dips and a mild stew of lentils and vegetables (sambhar). Stainless steel forks and tablespoons are provided though these Indian dishes are traditionally best consumed using fingers of the right hand to tear a small piece of the dosa, dipping in the dips before savouring the blended aroma and flavours that fill the mouth. Also included in their menu are a few items of North Indian cuisine like the bhatura which is a deep fried, leavened sourdough flat bread served with chick peas. The bhatura is best eaten while it is still hot because else it tends to become rubbery in consistency. Basically however, the Saravanaa Bhavan is the home of the dosa.
Fast and no frills veggie Indian spot
No frills version of a fast food vegetarian restaurant. Not a bad food. Just convenient. Mostly visited by people of Indian culture.

The site doesn't have resources to properly execute a reservation transfer. Some places allow it however the best bet is to open a chat on the listing from the seller and communicate there

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
