I went to Sasabune for the first time the other day because
I went to Sasabune for the first time the other day because of all the good reviews. My go to is Sushi Gen in little Tokyo but they're closed on Mondays and I decided to go here since it's closer to where I live. I was going back and forth about reviewing since the staff are so nice but feel compelled to.As people have mentioned it's not a restaurant you go to for the ambience yet it's clean and it's nice that there is a parking garage they validate. The host/waiter and waitress were very kind and attentive. When I got there, it was early enough so no wait as there was only one other table eating. I'm not sure if I went on an off night but the sushi was pretty bad except for the uni. I felt sick soon after I left and for the high price I expected super fresh high quality fish and seafood. As I mentioned the uni was good and I'd hope so for $25 for two pieces. While I did like how the sushi is prepared ~ nori on the outside and warm rice the tekka maki (tuna) didn't taste fresh and the crab roll was even worse. Was so fishy. Crab does usually have a slight fish taste but did not taste good. The salmon skin roll was ok but by the time that came out I did not have an appetite. Not sure how the rice is prepared but maybe they add an ingredient that didn't agree with me. I also ordered a miso soup which tasted like the instant kind, didn't taste as authentic of a broth and no tofu in it for $4.50. The green tea was ok. My total was $68 and with tip $80. It was definitely not worth it and I regret eating and spending my money there. I didn't feel comfortable giving them this feedback while there because I was sat right by the sushi bar and kitchen and with no other customers it felt a bit awkward for me to have all eyes from the chefs and wait staff on me.

Amazing authentic sushi place, up there with the best sushi I've ever had. Extremely expensive though.
Be the first to Reply5 star sushi.
It's as fresh as it gets. They have both Santa Barbara and Japanese uni. Try both!

Love everything about this place. We go every Thursday and go through withdrawals when we can't. Keep up the great work!!!
Be the first to ReplyThe most unwelcoming sushi bar in all of the San Gabriel
The most unwelcoming sushi bar in all of the San Gabriel Valley should be their motto The sushi is average and the chefs tonight had O presentation skills. They were cooking something like salmon skin and the restaurant smelled like smoke and my eyes hurt! I would never go back there and it was more expensive than sushi yuzu and not even close to the quality! Don't bother!!

My husband and I have been looking for a new sushi spot and SASABUNE is IT!! Amazing sushi, amazing service, amazing EVERYTHING. I HIGHLY recommend. We had the Omakase which was $150 per person and it was 10/10. SAKE was amazing as well. Not to mention it is super clean. We will be coming back.

What a find! My daughter and I requested the omakase (chef's choice) and were seated at the sushi bar. We were highly impressed with the care that goes into the preparation and creation of each individual offering. The quality of the fish is evident from the first look, and is confirmed by the first bite. This is among the best sushi I have ever tasted. The toro tuna was like butter--so velvety and delicious. The crab hand roll was packed with crab and had a very satisfying crunch from the seaweed. There was nothing in the order that I would not gladly eat again. The wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce are created in house, and are excellent. The service was outstanding; prompt without hovering. And extremely polite and friendly.Parking in the attached garage is easy (park on P3) and is validated.Treat yourself to this experience--it is well worth the money!
Be the first to ReplySasabune Glendale always holds a special place in my heart.
I love celebrating holidays and special occasions here and the food never disappoints.I love this location especially comparing to other stores on the west side cause it feels more quiet and private. 99% of the time I get the Japanese omakase and I'm always impressed by the food quality and presentation. I love how creative they are with the appetizers and the blue crab hand roll is just top notch. For me the experience worth every penny.

I came here on a Thursday afternoon and had the Japanese Omakase. If seem like the meal would never end with plate after plate of amazing sushi. I think my absolute favorite was probably the sea urchin from Santa Barbara. Near the end of the course I did order another sea urchin from Japan, which had a more briny taste and was creamier but I felt the Santa Barbara see urchin had a more mild custard flavor that I really liked. What an amazing hidden gem tucked away in a strip mall right across from Olive Garden and CPK! I'm definitely looking forward to the next special occasion to come back here.
Be the first to ReplySo good sushi in the most nondescript building.
Didn't know this was in Glendale. I love the omakasa sets. Good value and yummy fish.

Chirashi Bowl Regular during lunch seemed rather petite at first glance but it packed a mighty punch of colorful protein over vinegared sushi rice. When the waiter placed this small plate in front of me, I thought: Oh, I guess I'll be mooching off of my partner's lunch. NOPE, it was the perfect amount. A wonderful variety of fresh fish was a decent value for $35. It also included a small salad and miso soup which wasn't much to write home about but were nice starters to the main event.Warning about the omakase: come extremely hungry! It seems deceivingly non stuffing but I've had to pass my sushi to my partner because sushi should never been taken home. Today my partner struggled to finish his omakase. Sasabune will provide a complimentary dessert on your birthday if ordered in advance. Today we had the black sesame cheesecake and the time before we had the green tea cheesecake. Both were pretty good. Wait service could have be better if there was a second waiter. I felt bad for the one kind server having to deal with multiple tables. Otherwise, Sasabune is our usual go to for sushi. We are so happy not to drive to the west side to enjoy quality sushi!

I have been a Sasabune disciple since the smallHouse days on Sawetelle. . . Ahh how I long for the days, gosh 30 Years ago easy .The food here is always sublime, hands down. But I must say, trying to visit the Glendale branch has been super super difficult.I now have been turned away 5 times as a single diner requesting the sushi bar. Not like oh in 30Minutes or can you be done in 30 minutes. Just plain , no sorry. It would not be so bad if the place was hoping busy, this is usually when the place is empty. . . I have given up. Better luck to you all. YMMV

A memorable dining experience and incredible fish. A true 5-star establishment.
Be the first to ReplyGreat quality on the sushi / sashimi.
Melts in your mouth with awesome flavor. Sushi rice is ok, I've had better - I prefer a stronger taste to my sushi rice and this was kind of mildly flavored. Had the lunch specials which were of decent value. Just wondering why they wait to serve the blue crab handroll last - at the end of your meal. It's feels like it should be more of an appetizer, not the piece de resistanceService was average, a bit cold and intimidating, not very warm or welcoming.Ambience was lacking. The more expensive lunch course does not come with miso soup or salad, but the cheaper lunch donburi special special does. That was a bit weird. Nice place to try once, but I have to think there are better places.

Being picky eater, this is the first place I loved the food and had no complaints about the taste or anything else. This is the best place and chefs are masters of their jobs. Thank you chef Genji for tasty and beautiful food. We will definitely be back to this nice and quite place.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious.
I came here for dinner and got omasake. Each piece of nigiri sushi I got was delicious. I especially loved how soft the salmon was. Best salmon I had. The only one that was a lil too fishy for me was the scallop. My kids loved the crab and unagi hand roll and liked that the chefs brought a table over and made it in front of them.

Great staff, with priorities straight as well as a workplace that allows employees to prioritize their family -- something many employers don't. Will always be a stop when I'm in town.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is incredible! It's definitely beyond my budget
This place is incredible! It's definitely beyond my budget at dinner, but the $28 lunch special is great: miso soup, salad, a piece each of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail sushi, your choice of those three fish over rice, and a blue crab hand roll, made table side, to finish. I got the tuna donburi, which was quite good, but next time I'll go for the salmon, as the salmon sushi was quite good. The sushi is prepared in the traditional style, with a swipe of wasabi between the rice and fish, a step that many American sushi places skip, so something to be aware of if you're not used to wasabi! Everything was great, but the hand roll at the end was really impeccable. We'll definitely be back!

Be the first to ReplyMy third or fourth time for omakase here, always a 5 star
My third or fourth time for omakase here, always a 5 star experience. The main sushi chef really cares about his food and it really translates into the sushi that he makes. He said he gets fish every morning from the fish market, which makes sense why the fish is so good!
Be the first to ReplySushi is nowhere near special.
The menu and staff are pretentious but the sushi doesn't live up. Avoid.
Be the first to ReplyI'm the biggest Sasabune fan you'll ever meet.
I've been to the one in Honolulu and was so happy to find out that there was one in Glendale. I live in Santa Barbara and have to commute to LA often for work. Sounds like a drag, but it's absolutely worth it since I get to dine here. The staff are always so friendly and attentive. The chef is so warm and takes pride in what he does, but isn't stuffy about it. Now to the fish -- why I absolutely love this place is that it stands on just simple, quality fish. Of course every top notch LA sushi restaurants have great quality, but they don't get what this guys got. It's all about who gets the next best thing after the Japanese market. Every fish just melts in your mouth. For all my people in LA, Glendale is worth driving to just for this place.
