I Love Sasaki!!
The food is absolutely pristine and the ambiance is serene! I just had my second Omakase last evening and I am so looking forward to my next visit. Chef Sasaki is a true blessing for us in San Francisco!!
Be the first to ReplyOmakase OMG!
There may be better omakase sushi restaurants in San Francisco, but I cannot imagine what they would do to improve on Sasaki. The 12 seats at the bar were filled by 6:30 pm. The chef and his assistant were attentive and efficient. The sushi was delectable and the sake was just right. I was prepared to need a snack after dinner, but I was perfectly full without feeling stuffed. I highly recommend this spot if you are into sushi and sake.
Intimate, Quiet, Excellent Omakase Restaurant
Like several omakase only restaurants we reviewed recently, this restaurant is easy to pass by unless you are really looking for it with the address as the only sign at the outer door to a foyer is a piece of paper indicating โby reservation only.โ Once you enter the inner door, you are warmly greeted to a sizable room with just a sushi bar of 12 seats and no tables. We came at 5:30 PM on a Saturday, the time it opens, and there were already two other couples seated. When wife and I were seated, we were presented with a hot towel and the single omakase menu and the beverage menu. The latter was rather short, with several champagnes ($26/glass & up), a number of sakes ($16/glass and up), a single beer with two sizes ($8 & 16), and three non-alcoholic beverages (sparkling or still water or tea, $8 each). The omakase is prix fixe $175. The chef and assistant worked meticulously behind the counter, and each morsel was presented beautifully. Most of the items were sushi, interspersed with some refreshing โpalate cleansersโ. The sushi here seems to emphasize a certain degree of marination as opposed to simple freshness. The chef explained that his rice was different from most others in that there is no sugar- I felt, however, that this rice did not form as good a harmony with the fish as, say, Kusakabeโs. Nevertheless, each item served was delicious. The entries included a couple of very nice desserts. For drinks, I had the larger beer, which was good. Wife had sparkling water. By the time the omakase was finished, we were quite full. Unlike some other omakase, they did not offer any a la carte choices afterwards (totally unnecessary here). The service was very attentive and friendly, and we liked the very quiet, intimate ambiance. The chef personally branded a wooden sake cup with his name and presented it to us for our anniversary celebration. He did the same for the birthday celebration of the couple adjacent to us. The only complaint, as a beer drinker, is that they had just one selection of beer, good as it was, and no wines except for champagne. Overall, an excellent omakase restaurant, comparable to the handful of fine omakase restaurants we reviewed, but not quite at the level of Kusakabe.
Be the first to ReplyA taste of authentic Japan
This is a true gem. A fantastic sushi / Japanese experience in San Francisco. This was a fantastic experience with amazing food. This is an dinner that should not be missed. Variety, taste , authenticity, flavor, and umami. I will be back in a week. Love this place.
Be the first to ReplyEdomae in San Francisco!!
Michelin star chef, Masa Sasaki, has now brought a high end traditional Edomae-style omakase sushi restaurant to the city! His fingerprints are already all over a number of acclaimed sushi restaurants around the bay area (as both chef and consultant), but in this new restaurant the focus is on creating an experience similar to one you might get during a visit to Tokyo. The decor, like the food, places an emphasis on elegance and simplicity. The rice and fish are treated and prepared so carefully, so expertly, that you truly feel that you are in the hands of a master.
It is so so difficult to quantify and rank the subjective experience of dining at a restaurant, but nevertheless I am more than comfortable saying that it, at the very least, does not feel untrue for me to maintain that this is the best dining experience I've ever had.
My wife and I will be visiting Japan for the first time early next year. We hope that the food we eat there will at least come close to what we experienced at Sasaki.
