Schilling Restaurant & Bar New York - Buy Reservations

My wife and I stopped by here on a lark with a couple of friends and their one year old babe. It was a Saturday night around 8pm. We were looking for a spot for cocktails and apps and this space delivered in every way. A bit like when you imagine something you want and it magically appears. They have a beautiful bar where the four of us (plus the half pint) settled in and immediately felt welcome. The head bartender (didn't catch his name unfortunately) was gracious and quick and fun to chat with even though he was super busy. Same goes for the rest of the staff actually.We weren't looking for a big meal. We all just ordered two portions of the spaetzle to share along with Gruner and martinis. Exquisite. I'd stop there, but just have to add that the interior design is the kind of space where you keep discovering fun details throughout the evening.

Had an amazing meal at a Michelin starred chef's restaurant in the Financial District! We had amazing looking drinks which were the Hugo Ahumado and the Mary's Secret. I loved the cinnamon apple flavor of Mary's Secret. For appetizers we tried the Frikadellen, the Smoked Trout Rilettes, and the Winter Greens. The salad was my favorite and my boyfriend really enjoyed the trout. For our entrees we had the Wiener Schnitzel which was massive and came with cucumber dill salad, potato salad, and lingonberry. We also had the Spätzle and the Crispy Brussel Sprouts. I absolutely loved the schnitzel and the brussel sprouts, and my boyfriend loved the Spätzle. For dessert drinks we had The Royal Nussbaum and the Brandy Maximillian. Both were definitely strong, but delicious! We had the Apple Strudel for dessert and it was the perfect cozy way to end our snowy night.

My friend and I went to wine Wednesday to try several Austrian wines & their extensive menu - boy were we impressed! I know I will spend several weeks thinking back to how delicious the schnitzel & Apple strudel were. Truly outstanding. Two stars for the decently friendly albeit super slow/disorganized service.My husband and I came in for an early dinner at 5:30pm this week and were told that there was a large party coming in later that evening so they sat us at a high top that was around 6" in depth. It was tiny and uncomfortable. No worries, maybe the food will make up for it...? Nope.We ordered the meatballs as an appetizer, the burgers for our entrees, and the apple strudel for dessert. After 10 minutes the server came back to us and told us the meatballs were sold out. 30 minutes after opening? Interesting. We replaced it with the chicken liver mousse. I've had chicken liver plenty of times and this was the only time it was insanely irony tasting. It tasted like I was eating straight up blood. The bread served with it was also burnt. Not a fan.Ok onto the burgers (that came out 30 mins after the appetizer). Who can mess that up? It's a burger. They found a way. They were insanely salty. My husband who normally doesn't seem as affected as me by salty foods even said his was over salted. I only took a few bites because it made my tongue feel like it was on fire. The rosemary pomme frites that came with them were ok though.The apple strudel was the only highlight of the meal. It was a really solid dessert.Service-wise they seemed overwhelmed. I understand there was a large party so they couldn't be very attentive but that doesn't mean they should have been THAT inattentive. We ended up ordering from the bar towards the end of the night because no one was coming to check on us. The wait staff was relatively friendly though, hence me not leaving a 1 star review. Also, during the beginning of the night they came over to take our order 3 times (different people each time) and we started to get concerned our order wasn't put in correctly. Overall, I really cannot recommend this place. It was "mid" as the kids say.

This is one of the times when I've been very excited about a restaurant to then be completely underwhelmed. The server was lovely and they have a nice outdoor dining area. For a birthday decided to try the restaurant week lunch menu, which consists of some of Schillings regular offerings. They were out of 2 of the vegetarian options I had selected, and as someone with mild lactose intolerance, the käsespätzle was the last choice. They said it could be prepared without cheese, which I was grateful for, but the execution of key components was lacking. As an Austrian who makes spätzle, they were overcooked and disintegrating as you put them in your mouth and were under-salted. To compensate for the lack of cheese and salt, maybe the kitchen compensated with an extra large mound of over-salted fried onions which took up half the bowl (I removed half of the onions for the later photos). While they made up for the lack of salt, they overpowered the subtle flavours of the yam and greens. Also not fully drained, the noodles and onions continued to get soggy as they sat in a pool of water. The salad was good fresh and crisp, but was not my first choice as they were out of the soup and blood beets I would not return and pay full price for this meal.

Food was delicious! I thought I'd had schnitzel before but it clearly wasn't done the right way- because the one here was so light and airy. I've been deceived my entire life! Glad Schilling showed me what schnitzel is supposed to be!. All the dishes were great from the appetizers to the dessert. Highly recommend! Staff were kind and attentive- we went with two little kids which is always tough but they were very accommodating.

So...this is a sad report that I don't enjoy sharing. I've enjoyed Schilling many times over the past decade. Well executed simple Austrian/German food (at a premium) has been enjoyed by my friends & myself here for some time. However... things appear to have changed...They offered a holiday special "dry aged Long Island Duck menu". I bit the bait. The duck was presented whole. I remarked "the skin looks quite dark?" The server didn't reply & took it back to the kitchen for slicing & RE-presentation. We were served duck meatballs that I'd best describe as Thanksgiving style? There were two, each atop mashed butternut squash & surrounded by cranberry sauce & gravy. . The 4 sides were then delivered with the sliced duck. Poached celeriac overpowered by a sour cream sauce, spaetzle in a whole grain mustard sauce, sautéed collards (way over salted) dressed with a vinaigrette and an avocado topped green salad with freshly cut slices of radishes rounded out the 4 sides. As you can see from the photographs, the dry aged Long Island duck was cooked too hot & fast. The skin blackened & the fat beneath it never had a chance to render properly. The duck breast flesh was tender & moist but the skin was clearly burnt & the fat was not only evident but unappetizing. The waitress inquired about our meal. We let her know we were disappointed & didn't enjoy the duck. She removed it. When she returned she informed us the chef said "he thought it looked right" and would we like a different main instead. My wife declined but I opted for the Wiener schnitzel. The schnitzel was excellent. Crispy & unctuous. However, we were billed $85 pp ($170) for the duck "experience" & ate Wiener schnitzel ($25) for supper which we were not billed for. The duck was kept by the kitchen (they didn't ask if we wanted to take it but we PAID for it). We took the celeriac salad & green salad with avocado & remaining schnitzel. The creme filled napoleon was quite wonderful. We were gifted two limoncello shots along with our bill that included everything but the schnitzel & limoncellos. We left knowing we won't return. $200 for what we had could & will go further elsewhere. I miss the Schilling we used to know. I also miss the Blaue Gans Austrian restaurant on Duane (Kurt Guttenbruner still of Wallsé is deeply missed).

We must have picked a bad night, the place was completely packed with holiday parties. The noise level was ridiculous, everyone screaming, a conversation between my husband and I was useless, unless we joined the screamers next to us. The Schnitzel was excellent (I'm from Vienna), the cucumber and potato salad good, quite different from Austrian though. Wine and beer offering great, service very friendly and kind. This might be a great place for a group, but definitely not for a quiet dinner!

This is a great place to go to after work and/or to catch up with a friend! The ambiance is really cozy and warm and super inviting. The hostess was not as kind to us as the ambiance but it's ok- I understand that you have reservations but there were seats empty for 1+ hour and instead of seating us she just didn't offer any help so we just sat at the bar to get some drinks. Thankfully the bartender was so nice and I enjoyed my company and there. I asked him for a table and he talked to another waitress to get us a seat at the communal table (which was empty for a while) and we found out it was open all along. We then had dinner and had a great time through the night here as their drinks are really tasty but strong in alcohol content! Beware of drinking too much haha. The garden of eden cocktail was so good I had to order another and another. I ordered the internacional to begin with since I love green chartreuse but the garden of Eden was just so simple and easy to drink I would highly recommend that one.For food I had the Viennese chicken sandwich and my party had the cream of broccoli soup. The food was not bad and I really enjoyed the mustard more than anything actually since it's Austrian-Mediterranean food and they do an amazing job with the mustard. I would definitely come back here again and order something else with my new favorite drink. I guess the point of this story is to reserve in advance if you want a better experience with getting a table!

It's a small sit down restaurant in FiDi with Austrian fare. Impeccable service. I'm a regular, so I might be biased. But the best part may be their service (after the strudel, and the seasonal are better than the regular but yet again... I may be biased. Cherry is a superior fruit to apple)They're so warm and friendly. Your cup is never empty, and the menu rotates seasonally so I never get tired of eating there. They're super accommodating (spatzle + schnitzel, you're welcome) and they have really good cocktails. I don't drink often, but I love that they have elderflower soda (it's used for cocktails but good as a stand-alone, those who get it get it and those who don't, don't) I'm a regular so I'm familiar with the staff, and they're a solid team. They really do work hard to make sure you've had a good experience, and I've had so many that I make sure to swing on by at least twice a month. I love bringing friends, family, and like the experience of fine dining at a decent price point and great service to boot.
