Finally got reservations here on a Friday night and was really looking forward to all the hype. I'm happy to say Semma did not disappoint!!! Our server, Frest, was just incredible with all of his recommendations and lovely banter - we're so grateful he was with us for our first Semma experience! We ordered the thaniyam, paniyaram, poriyal to start, and we're just blown away. Each bite was even better than the last! Our next courses included the dosa, huukosu cauliflower, eral thokku, and we ordered the lamb but it never came. The food was genuinely so delicious, the spices were not overpowering or too spicy, they were perfectly balanced! For our mains we ordered the goat biryani, keen polichatu and the lobster. This was actually my first time eating lobster and I can't believe I hadn't done it sooner. It was perfectly cooked, and the gravy was wonderful! The star of the show really was the biryani though, the goat was so perfectly cooked! I'm soo impressed by this place, I can't wait to come back! Bonus points for 2 clean bathrooms!

I loved the passion fruit pudding! I think it is the prettiest dessert I've ever eaten. The dosa and lamb both had great flavor. The whole fish was also really delicious, but the lobster didn't have that bouncy texture you get when it's fresh. I have to take off a star for the reservation process that requires $50 per person and for the prices in general.

Loved !!! Am south indian myself, so was very excited that there is a Michelin star South Indian restaurant to try! Overall a great experience. If you have never had South Indian food, definitely a great ~modern~ introduction into it. If you are South Indian/are familiar with South Indian food, then it's definitely is a bit overpriced for a lot of the flavors you can get at home - but they do it in a very classy, modern, fusion-esque way that I think it's definitely worth experiencing! Also if you eat meat, they have great meat dishes with south indian takes that can be rare to get at other restaurants. Overall ambience was wonderful, drinks were great. I was very bummed they did not have the rasam when I went, but otherwise great experience Gunpowder dosa - 8/10 - super good!!! A great dosa, chutneys were perfectly complementary, and the sambar was wonderful as well. Definitely recommend getting. (Note: if you are Indian and regularly eat dosas, this is like a solid dosa, but nothing out of the ordinary). Eral thokku (tiger prawns) - 9/10 - fire! I definitely recommend getting this - wonderful flavor. I wish more came with one order for the price of it, but very much enjoyed Attu Kari Sukka (lamb) - 7/10 - very good! I thought it was great and flavorful. Went well with paratha and with rice, or on it's own if you prefer that. Had a bit of a kick to it. Meen Pollichathu (sea bass) -10/10 - amazing!!!!! If you enjoy fish, I definitely recommend this dish. While it did have bones, it was still worth it. It has so many wonderful flavors, each bite was different. The fish was cooked great and very soft, vegetables had such great flavor, the sauce/curry was wonderful and rich. Ate it with rice and paratha and it was fabulous! 10/10. + got the Coconut rice, the paratha, and 2 drinks.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth it for vegetarians.
Both curries were very similar. The ambiance also did not feel like fine dining at all.
Be the first to ReplyFor a pretty Michelin star restaurant, we found this food
For a pretty Michelin star restaurant, we found this food mediocre and at a hefty price point. It was not worth the hype, nor the expensive price. The vibe had a very inauthentic feel, which was underpinned by the food. I'm surprised this place has a Michelin star--I have dined at multiple Michelin star Indian restaurants, and I don't think it measures up at all. I've never been to an Indian restaurant with so few vegetarian options (only 2). We had the Semma Sour drinks, which were delightful. After, gunpowder dosas. The filling was delicious, but the crepe was oily. The chutneys were salty to the point of being inedible. My duck leg was the best part of the meal (delicious, properly roasted and marinated), but it was soaked in an overly salty curry. At a near $50 price point, I wouldn't say it was appropriately valued. All portions were pretty small considering the price. Additionally, to note, the staff made a mistake with our reservation, so we ended up having to pay a $150 minimum (despite the fact we were seated at a table for two). They couldn't do anything to fix this. I would not recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for good or reasonably priced Indian food. There are many better options in Manhattan.
Be the first to ReplyI am sad to have to give SEMMA such a low rating.
Especially considering that the food there is excellent. This review is based on the fact that we have tried to contact SEMMA multiple times about how we were overcharged and didn't get our refund and never heard back from them. When we booked our reservation at SEMMA, we made it for 3 people and were charged $50/person. We emailed SEMMA a few days before our reservation and explained the third person wouldn't be able to come but we still wished to come and would ensure our bill was at least $150 to cover the 3rd person. The individual said that was fine. When we got our bill at SEMMA we had spent over $300 and they only took off a prepaid amount of $100. We explained the situation to the staff and they told us that in this situation SEMMA would be refunding us the prepaid charge of the third person. We waited a month for the refund but never got it. We have emailed SEMMA multiple times about this and it's now been 4 months (Feb 2024) and after innumerable attempts, they have completely ignored us. It's upsetting as this is more about the principal than the money.
Be the first to ReplyI enjoyed my meal, but it wasn't the earth shattering
I enjoyed my meal, but it wasn't the earth shattering experience that one would think given the difficulty of securing reservations. What we ordered: - Gunpowder dosa - Sprouted mung beans - Banana leaf wrapped whole sea bass - Goanese oxtail - Side of parotta and coconut rice - Passion fruit pudding Be aware that everything is about a 7+ spice level for those who are more spice sensitive. I love spicy foods and can tolerate spice quite a bit, but I found that the spice obliterated my taste buds throughout the meal, so I couldn't enjoy the flavors. My favorites were the gunpower dosa and the oxtail, along with the passion fruit pudding dessert. It is a very, very expensive menu -- which I don't mind paying but the prices didn't quite seem to match up with the portion and ingredients of the dishes. Overall, I'm glad to dine at Semma but it's once and done experience for me.

I'l caveat by mentioning I visited over a year ago - from my recollection, nothing stood out and food was at times overly or unpleasantly spiced (to my taste). Drinks were good though?

Great food, wonderful service, amazing dosa! Also tried the lamb and stuffed peppers, which both were good but not for my pallet. We got two desserts, and the passion fruit pudding was to die for. It was SO GOOD, with the balance of tart and sweet with the hint of coconut. Save room for the dessert!!
Be the first to ReplyA fantastic experience.
The food is wonderful and service excellent. Went with Indian friends and they voted it a huge hit.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great service, but the design/experience falls
Great food, great service, but the design/experience falls a little short.First of all, sitting at the bar, there is a bright light illuminating the bottles, and another one under the bar, shining onto your legs. Above the actual bar is a very weak light, barely illuminating the counter and your food. As a result, I could barely see the details of my dishes, and it was impossible to get any good pictures as well. I ordered the Gunpowder Dosa and the Chettinad Maan, which took a while to come out. The dosa was crisp, and the potato filling was full of flavor and really complimented the huge dosa. The soups and sauces alongside it were basic in flavor and variety and I found didn't add much to the dish, but I still enjoyed it overall. Also, the crisp dosa overflowing off the plate left crumbs everywhere when trying to split it. The chettinad was delicious, the venison peeled right off the bone and its deep flavor melted into every corner of my mouth. However, as mentioned with the bar lighting, I couldn't really see what was in the pot they gave me, and so I was digging through in the dark. Again with design, the overflowing bowl of coconut rice given was impossible to scoop out of without spilling some, which was annoying to eat, and left my table looking like a toddler had ran through. I really enjoyed Semma's food; each bite was packed with authentic, rich, and deep flavors, but the overall design of the experience was lackluster.

We somehow got lucky and got a reservation at Semma! I've heard about Semma and how it was deemed Michelin star before, and my friends and I were so excited to try it. When we walked in we were seated immediately but when we began to order it was probably the most confusing ordering process we've ever gone through. It felt as if we were pressured to keep ordering food (maybe cause the kitchen was closing?) but do know that they have decent portions for each course though they might say differently. Food thankfully was really good and I'm not Michelin critic but it didn't seem to exceed expectations. My friends who ordered their lobster and venison really enjoyed their dishes and especially the lobster was so soft and paired well with the curry. The other standout items were the gunpowder dosa which is a must and the cauliflower. The poriyal was also an interesting and refreshing item. I would pass on any bread or sides you're thinking of getting since you do end up eating a decent amount. Overall good food for a one time try!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing location and decor.
We got the gunpowder dosa, kal dosa, tiger prawns, goat biriyani & lobster tail. Honestly, everything was mid, except for the lobster tail. The lobster tail was so exquisite. I had never tasted anything like that before! The cocktails were also 10/10. I will say the spice in the food was perfect. It never overwhelmed the dishes.
Be the first to ReplyThe food here was fantastic.
We made a reservation for 4 exactly one month in advance. We ordered a good variety: the snails, gunpowder dosa, tiger prawns, goat intestines, attu Kari Sukka, lobster tail, venison, and biryani. We also got a side of dosa, parotta, and coconut rice. The venison was everyone's favorite, as the gravy was especially tasty. Every dish had a unique flavor, and most were on the spicier side (except for the snails). This is definitely some of the best South Indian food you'll get at a restaurant. The only thing we all agreed wasn't fantastic was the parotta. It it was a little thin and too crispy (hard to eat with the gravy dishes). The service was great. Our waiter was attentive and gave good recommendations.

I just don't understand how anyone could leave less than a 5 star review at Semma. Every dish was composed of more flavor than I've ever had anywhere else. There was citrus, coconut, spice, earth, umami, and char all in just one dish, and every bite left me wanting more. The ambiance feels like a party, and the service added to the fun. Go to Semma before they raise their prices from their new Michelin status, it's fantastic.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is good.
The service is good. There chairs are terrible. I'm older and I have lower back issues. The chairs at Semma are very uncomfortable. I asked for a cushion to support my back but they have none. I will go back if I don't have to suffer during and after a meal.
Be the first to ReplyWife was able to make reservations (2 months in advance)
Wife was able to make reservations (2 months in advance) for our trip to NY during our kids' spring break. The hostess was extremely nice and we were seated right away. Being from Texas, we are used to space and plush seats, so this was a little different (think Paris spacing). The drinks on the menu went with the Indian theme, I had the paan flavored old fashion; it definitely tasted like the description, but I was not a fan (due to the paan and rose water, a little too sweet for me). Wife ordered the Pondicherry Sarraku, it was pretty tasty for being a mixed drink containing Hennessy. For our appetizer, we ordered the tiger prawns; this was amazing. The flavor is what you would imagine if you were actually in South India, it was so fresh, good portion size and had a good amount of heat. If you have more than (2) people, I would suggest ordering two orders as it only comes with (2) pieces (prawns). The next dish we ordered was the lamb - very tasty, good portion size. For our entree, we had the Dungeness Crab; flavor was amazing! If you do want the crab, you have to call/contact them ahead as it is limited. All in all, it was a great experience and our friends and family in NY are jealous that we experienced the food before they did

Such a well deserved Michelin star! We had been trying to find a reservation forever and eventually just tried our luck with a late night walk in at the bar. As others have mentioned stand out dishes included the attu kari sukka, gunpowder dosa, goat biriyani and tiger prawns. We also got their bread pudding dessert which was a little heavy on the milk but still delicious. If we can score a table ever in the future we'll be back!

What an incredible find! We've been wanting to go for the longest but reservations are impossible to be had! Finally got a 9.30pm seating which was a bit of a bummer because it felt a bit rushed at the end due to last call for orders and the kitchen closing. That apart, we loved the decor and the gorgeous murals on the walls depicting Kathakali dancers and flower and leaf motifs. The color palette was fresh and lively and the cane lamps and the woven straw coverings on the ceiling evoked a soothing step back into simpler times. Now on to the real reason we were there - the food!! Spoiler alert - Can I just say we were blown away? This is what we ordered -Appetizers /Eral Thokku - Tiger Prawns in a thick tomato onion masala with just the perfect seasoning of curry leaves. /Gunpowder Dosa - crisp and nicely spiced on the inside with the gunpowder and lots of Aloo masala stuffing and Sambhar and Chutney's to die for! The unmistakable taste and aroma of ghee takes you to heaven!/Lamb Sukka - this was soooo good I forgot to take pics until it was almost done! Mains/Kozhi Allepey - home style chicken! Perfectly prepared. Not the most exciting thing on the menu but definitely soul satisfying. /Kal Dosa - this was a plain Dosa that came as a side. It was thicker than expected but we loved it despite that! The flavor and the thickness unexpectedly hit the spot! /Dindigul Biryani - just OMG good!! It uses a local South Indian rice variety so doesn't have the elegance of the Basmati, but instead the short grain perfectly compliments the complexity of the spices and flavors!/Parotta - the standard favorite without which any Indian meal is incomplete but so well prepared with layers and layers of goodness and just the perfect combination of crisp and soft. Dessert/Shahi Tukda - so if there's one thing I had to complain about it's unfortunately this. I have a major sweet tooth and enjoy most desserts, but this was a little too rich and cloying even for my taste. Semma just moved to the VERY TOP of my List of Indian Restaurants in NYC!!! Highly, highly recommend you go!! Unfortunately it seems I'm just sabotaging my next reservation but they really deserve this review!

The food, especially the more inventive dishes (snails etc) were amazing, but this is the worse service I have ever gotten in a Michelin starred restaurant. The person serving me--wearing an unapologetically Indian T- shirt, ironically --seemed only interested in helping and making recommendations to white people, and basically ignored the Indian people sitting there. He refused to let me hold onto the menus for more than a minute, perhaps fearing that I might run away with it. Will not return.

It is so difficult to get a reservation but that's to be expected from a Michelin star restaurant. You know what's not to be expected from a Michelin star restaurant? Rats. Especially in the bathroom. I went to the bathroom, opened the door, and a small rat (or mouse?) ran out of the bathroom into the curtains next to it! I think the curtains led into the kitchen or something with food. The food was delicious, service was great, drinks were amazing, but rodents? That's my dealbreaker. DOH should definitely stop by and take a look.
Be the first to ReplySo hard to get a reservation but worth it.
Please give this place a visit especially if your knowledge of Indian food starts and ends with chicken tikka masala.Warning : we overate and tell so full afterwards. The food was divided among 4 people and still felt a lotWe started with their gunpowder dosa - crispy, paper thin with a flavorful sambhar and potato filling. One might argue why eat dosa here when you get decent dosa even outside, and they would have a point. Then we went with the attu kari sukka (think fry prep of lamb). The tellicherry peppers along with the mace just explodes in your mouth after accentuating the lamb and is highly recommendedWe pre ordered the crab - they say it's for two people which is technically correct if you're not ordering other things. It's a big portion with sides. The sides have been delicately chosen to accompany the spicy crab. The parotta does justice and we ended up ordering more because we were 4 people. Please get this dish if you are a crab lover. Because my friends don't want to see me thin they encouraged me to order Dindigul Biryani. Now I am a biryani snob and very few biryani surpass a Kolkata style dum biryani so take that into consideration when you read this paragraph. The samba rice was too starchy for me actually and while I enjoyed the dish very much I doubt I'll order it again. Basically there's tons of things I liked more I forget what the dessert was called but it was like a payasam (rice pudding) that was doused in tender coconut. Beautiful way to end a spicy meal if you ask me The chef was so nice and even took a picture with us!Cocktails are also nice btw - but I stuck to my lime sodasWill I be back? If I can manage to get a Reservation, yes!

This place was AMAZING The food was wow so wonderful I truly enjoyed this experience and the chef was so nice
Be the first to ReplyI love spicy food.
Most of the items we ordered were very spicy. In fact much too spicy for some at the table. I know that one should expect some level of spice at an Indian restaurant, but I felt the waiter could have done a better job to direct items that may had a less intense heat level. He just said "the chef will not modify the spiciness of any dish" and offered to bring some raita to the table (which he forgot). Very busy and buzzy restaurant with reservations that were almost impossible to get. Not sure I would dine here again however. Many better Indian restaurants in the city.
