I’m really torn about this review. First, my wife stayed up until 1am on the U.S. west coast three weeks prior to make the reservation. But that’s the procedure and she was excited about dining at Septime for her birthday.
It was a 7-course dinner with paired wines and 6 of the 7 dishes were really quite good, creative and well-presented; there was only one dish that I didn’t care for.
But where the dinner really fell down was with the wine pairings. As noted in at least one other review, the wine selections were outright disappointing. Two of the seven wines came from Georgia (the country) and were practically undrinkable and another from some other country that I didn’t catch (or know of) and was similarly terrible. A fourth “wine” was actually a sour beer that had been fermented (or aged?) in wine barrels so I guess that qualified as a wine? The final wine, an Italian Passito, was served with a chocolate ganache dessert. An interesting pairing. The Passito was actually the only enjoyable wine of the night. My wife yearned for a glass of Port with that chocolate but no such luck. I guess that maybe I was expecting French wines? But silly me.
Anyway, I guess the lesson from tonight is don’t go with the wine pairing. The wines really detracted from my enjoyment of the food. (Fortunately my wife decided not to have the wines.) And because I trusted the quality of the paired wines, I didn’t peruse the wine list so I can’t comment on what’s there. They really need to upgrade the paired wine program (big time). I think that it’s a disservice to an otherwise fine (and pricey) restaurant.
Oh, and no need to dress up, it’s not a fancy place by any means.
