Great brunch spot!
Great brunch spot. Lovely, lively space. Service was friendly, attentive, accommodating. The food was FANTASTIC. French toast, shrimp and grits, shakshouka, eggs & bacon. The lattes/cappuccinos, so well-made.

A fine meal, tasty service was great. However its not up to the high standard they normally present nor that we had had previously. The jamon croquettes had an imperceptible quantity of jamon and were fill with a bean(?) paste which was not really all that appetizing. 2 of the 3 of us decided to see what came next. Grilled asparagus was on point, nice inclusion of some mildly spicy pickled peppers gave the dish some zing. Beet salad was tasty except for the beets. The beets were boiled and had the taste which you get with canned beets. If they had roasted the beets this would have been a very solid dish. Guys, roast the beets hasselback style and serve then on a plate with the same arugula and dressing. Sea Bass was overcooked and dry. I doubt Jen would have let this dish out of the kitchen if she had seen it. Churros are darn good, not your state fair churros. However, its a piece of friend bread and gets to be a bit cloying with the mexican chocolate sauce it is served with. Smaller portion and some berries or something to add some contrast and as palate cleaners would be welcome. Mixed drinks were delicious. Service was friendly.

My wife and I come here all the time for Chef Jen’s amazing food! Don’t miss the falafel, fried chicken and churros, squid bomba, kefta, and octopus.
Tim keeps the FOH fun and welcoming.

Dinner
Shakewell shook me well. The watermelon and feta cheese starter was so good, I had it as a side too with my main. The staff are so friendly too...probably rubs down from the owner. I really enjoyed this place.

Be the first to ReplyDelicious spiced Cuisine
A mediterranean restaurant that uses spice in most dishes. We had very tasty dinners. This is probably one of Oakland's best right now, so it's popular and you must plan ahead. Good service. A bit loud inside.
Be the first to ReplyNot so Small Plates
It was a blazing hot day in Oakland as summer came early. We were in town visiting our daughter and trying to figure out a place for dinner. We won't drown to Lakeshore to see if we could get a table at Shalewell and were in luck. The three of its decided to get several small plates to share. Unlike a lot of restaurants of this type, the portions are quite generous, four large falafel balls with slices of chorizo for example. All the dishes were well prepared and our lucky daughter has dinner for tomorrow night. I especially enjoyed the arugula salad and the lentil stew.
Be the first to ReplySubpar service and mediocre dishes
I had heard great things about Shakewell and so we planned a get-together with friends here. I honestly don't know if we had hit it on a bad night but even my friend who had frequented this restaurant in the past said he was disappointed. When we first arrived we ordered a bottle of wine for the three of us plus some apps: marinated olives, bacon wrapped dates, flatbread with olive oil and Zatar, and a cucumber/pea/sardine salad. The salad was delicious with the sardines not overwhelming the dish. The olives were marinated to perfection with a fine selection of varieties - although it should have been served with a serving spoon. We ended up having to dig them out with our forks not wanting to use our fingers for a wet sharing dish. The bacon wrapped dates came with a paprika-chile based tomato purée, which I found had heat but not a lot of flavour, and the flatbread was dry with hardly any oil to make the Zatar stick to the bread. It was a little disappointing. The Malbec we had ordered was delicious despite it's low-price point, a definite highlight.
My biggest complaint at this point was the service. We ordered our mains, got our appetizers, and then minutes later our mains were just dumped on the table despite the fact we hadn't even made it through half the appetizers. The runner just dropped them on every corner of the table, some balanced precariously close to the edge and you could tell they didn't really care - they didn't even ask where the orders went. Heck, even Denny's waits until you are finished your apps, and so for a restaurant at this price point to not know how to stagger the courses was, frankly, embarrassing. It felt like they were trying to rush us out as quickly as possible. Ironically, while this was going on, a four-top was seated right next to us and they waited about 15 minutes for a server before just picking up their things and leaving.
Two of us had the chicken fried with Zatar which came in a similar paprika-based sauce like the date appetizer above and a creamy yogurt. The best part of this dish was the portion: it was approximately three chicken breasts, so it was a lot of food. In retrospect, we could have shared one and still walked away satisfied. The chicken was well cooked: juicy and tender with a crispy coating fried to perfection. Sadly, it was heavily salted & had way too much Zatar for a white meat to carry so a bit of a disappointment there. Another friend had the octopus, which he loved so that dish was a win.
We ordered churros for dessert, and I ordered a cappuccino. The churros were delicious albeit a little underdone with the middle of them a bit undercooked and mushy. I enjoyed the chocolate sauce but one other member of our party found it overwhelming. The bill came before my cappuccino and when I mentioned it she said "oh it didn't come yet?" We looked on the bill and it wasn't listed so she completely had forgotten and didn't cop to it. She asked if I still wanted it but having been completely underwhelmed this entire meal, I told her to cancel it.
As I mentioned before, I feel like perhaps this experience was just a fluke and we had hit it on the wrong night. The menu definitely had a fine selection of options and with a few tweaks in service and spicing, this would be a great experience.
