Kappa cuisine brought another dimension to Japanese
I am big on sushi and wanted to taste other options of Japanese cuisine and this Kappa style with the different menus was a great option for that. Well deserved Michelin star.
Be the first to ReplyBest complete Japanese ( non sushi meal ) in town !!
When reviewing Michelin star restaurant . I like to look at the CP value. We had another Michilin starred restaurant the night before and nothing came closed.
Like the menu says , full sastifactions is delivered when one is serve raw, steam, grill , boild and fried in a meal ..
Boy did Chef delivered!
We truly enjoyed the aged uni, the Ankimo ( never had this fresh sweet monk fish liver!) , the detail on everything is amazing and greatly appreciated . We love the sake pairing and the server Cris detail introduction on every sake (even cocktail )
We end up learning so much more and fell in love with this place with plan to come back next month already !! Amazing food, ( non sushi ) , great staff great team work ( after all , his team need to keep up with the Chefs right?)
Def will be back for more !
Great, Non-Sushi, Japanese Tasting Menu
Loved it! This was my first in-restaurant dining since COVID and I went w my sister for her bday mid-May. I've been wanting to try this Jonathan Gold reviewed / Michelin starred restaurant for quite some time. And wow what an experience. We did the B-Ikkyu and C-Taisho's meals. Our mother is Japanese and we lived in Japan for a decade so we're familiar w Japanese meals & flavors. What was fun, interesting and delicious abt dinner was how the Chef paired flavours - it was different yet stunning. We were both quite impressed.
Other impressions fr the evening:
1. *I* think we got the best seats in the house: the end of the counter, looking into the kitchen (and you can also see what other diners along the counter are getting & differs fr your meal);
2. When my sister couldn't decide on a cocktail, they asked her abt her preferences and made an off-menu, yuzu vodka cocktail (OMG delicious!);
3. There are several parking lots within walking distance. The restaurant is in DTLA and with many restaurants in the general LA area, parking is smelly/inconvenient and/or expensive.
4. My sister raved abt the auto-everything restroom;
5. Chef David Schlosser was gracious when we asked if we could get our photo taken w him;
6. Service was very friendly.
A meal at Shibumi is a memorable
A meal at Shibumi is a memorable night. You have the opportunity to try flavors and textures that you really cannot get anywhere else. You may recognize a few items on the menu, perhaps many if you know Kappo style. The preparation and presentation are unique, uncomplicated, and refreshing.
As the head chef said, these are dishes that have been prepared for hundreds of years, and will be prepared for hundreds of years. This will add a new dimension to what you know about cuisines of the world.
Further, the sake options, and other drink options, follow the same other-worldly principle.
The cost is much lower than other restaurants in this caliber. Highly recommended.
Sublime
Shibumi is not a restaurant, it is a provider of the ultimate culinary experience for the senses.
Epic
Brilliantly Creative Japanese — Food and Drink
You could go here just for the cocktails . . . which are words you've rarely or never heard applied to a Japanese restaurant before. And the food . . . . oh . . . . I started with a generous portion of home-made tofu with a top-layer of Ikura . . . perfect . . . followed by a deliciously grilled piece of trout. Sit at the gorgeous bar and watch the chef and bartender do their magic. I've been twice and will go back.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, awful staff
The food was fantastic, delicious and beautifully presented. The staff (apart from one woman, who understood how Japanese food should be served) were absolutely awful! They were rude and condescending. One guy served our drinks holding the glasses from the top, i.e. with his fingers all over the rim of the glass. He also slapped the drinks and food plates down on the table. We are always very courteous to serving staff but he seemed to be insisting that we pay attention to him! The woman who served us first, was also very condescending when we asked for one thing to be explained from the menu. She was smirking and seemed sooo bored.
It was such a pity because as I said, the food was lovely. Servers with terrible manners ruined what otherwise may have been a wonderful experience. We will not be returning to Shibumi.
Good "Outsider" Japanese Food, Small DTLA restaurant
Loved how some of the dishes were cold, especially the veggies. I got the $75 tasting menu and the $40 sake tasting. Great value. Everything was very tasty, non-sushi Japanese food. The countertop was beautiful, but there was no Japanese toilet in the Men's room (but neither was there in the In Ann at Japan House in Hollywood, the most Japanese of all LA Japanese restaurants). Excellent choice for artisanal food.
Be the first to ReplyNice little spot
Sat with a friend at the bar. Ate a ton of food and got too drunk to remember what was had besides a good time.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food
Innovative Japanese influences cuisine, very tasteful interior design with excellent service. They offer both a la cate and omakase dinner, be adventurous and you should be rewarded.
