DELICIOUS! Every single item ordered was spot on! Cocktails were good. Only downside is the limited seating time and seemed a bit rushed.
Be the first to ReplyLove love love love! The best vegan sushi ever.
How can every bite be so so flavorful. The wait times aren't justified though. Also would like it if they are open for lunch. Only dinner is sometimes hard to go into the city just for dinner

She accepted me a like family member. I felt myself as a like home.

We walked in here on a week night about 830pm and it was popping!! We luckily got 3 spots at the bar and were welcomed in. I've been wanting to try this place for YEARS now and it was definitely worth the hype & wait. We were all obsessed. Everything we got was truly amazing. None of us are vegan, but this place is so fun vegan or not!! We got rolls & nigiri to share. We got the avocado nigiri, surprise ending roll, boddy & soul roll, and the colonels pipe roll. They were all delicious in their own way. The boddy & soul was our favorite- really tasted like real sushi. The colonels pipe roll was very fresh with the beets on top mimicking fish. The surprise ending was fun because one of us died from the habanero piece! So much fun. Definitely worth the experience coming here. Amazing food and service.

Have to go again to try everything on the menu - forgot it was vegan! Excellent service and fantastic ambiance!

Wonderful flavors and very creative dishes, good service, though it's gets pretty noisy as it's a popular dining spot (for good reasons!)

Shizen is so creative and does a great job being incredibly thoughtful and detail-oriented about their flavors, texture, and acidity. I used to love their marinated tomato nigiri but my new favorite is now the marinated eggplant nigiri. Highlights: soy protein karaage, prime suspect, secret weapon (the marinated eryngii mushroom was super delish and had the most satisfying texture) Lowlights: Brussel sprouts (smelled so delicious but it was too oily for me) Glad they take reservations now!

The BEST EVER, all of the food is fresh, fresh, fresh! My daughter and I enjoyed ourselves after a beautiful day of thrifting on Valencia St. The entire restaurant has a vibe, great decor, lighting, classic hip-hop, and beautiful and friendly wait staff. But most important friggin delicious vegan sushi. It was a special treat for my daughter and I. It was important for me to give her a great dining experience with healthy, excellent food. We'll be back!

tried sushi for the first time, it was good! frankly, didn't know what to expect & was pleasantly surprised. try their brussels sprouts first small plates, hidden agenda & candlestick for sushi

I did not think vegan sushi could taste so delicious! I was throughly impressed with the flavors of each roll. I loved that each item was very fresh and hot. Shizen does an incredible job at presentation and I love how they highlight veggies. Because it was vegan, we did not feel super satiated even though we ordered a LOT of food - just a bit hard to get protein in. It was also quite expensive but makes sense since it was a ~unique dining experience. We got the yuzu cheesecake for dessert which was the only miss for us.

As someone who isn't vegan, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya. The innovative use of ingredients made for a unique and satisfying meal. The texture of the Bean curd in the katsu was particularly impressive, and the grilled and marinated eggplant was a standout dish, despite its simplicity. The specialty rolls were also impressive and really stood out. However, it's worth noting that the price point is a bit high. While the artistry and presentation are undeniable, you're ultimately paying for the art, not necessarily the ingredients themselves.Overall, Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya is a great option for those looking for innovative vegan cuisine. Even as a non-vegan, I found the meal to be incredibly satisfying and flavorful. While the price point may be a bit high, the unique flavors and innovative use of ingredients make it well worth the visit.
Be the first to ReplyVery difficult to find a reservation at Shizen on a weekend
Very difficult to find a reservation at Shizen on a weekend so I'd recommend making a reservation a week in advance. The ambience/service is good and it's a nice and chic place. We ordered the Yuba Nigiri, which wasn't one of my favorite dishes (very soft and low key flavor) but I loved the foxy scarlet sushi roll. It was super flavorful and stood out for me. The crunchiness and sweetness of the roll blended really well. I had higher expectations from boddy and soul roll as it is one of their favorites/most liked but it was alright - the creamy portion was good but the crunchy part of it didn't go too well with the tangy/creamy flavor profile. I really like this cute vegan sushi restaurant as it's not too expensive and is a versatile spot - for a date night or a place to hang out with friends or family.

The food alone is enough to keep you coming back for more, coupled with the amazing service will solidify the deal. The warm and pleasant ambience is a major plus, especially after a long days work. I highly recommend this place, definitely one of my top 2 favorites.
Be the first to ReplyMy friends and I went to Shizen for dinner and ordered some
My friends and I went to Shizen for dinner and ordered some appetizers and signature rolls to share. All the rolls were delicious and my friends, mostly non-vegetarian, were very surprised how tasty the rolls were. Usually you'd expect an avocado roll or veggie rolls, but Shizen creatively uses vegetables to create delicious bites. My favorites were the hidden agenda roll and secret weapon roll. We ordered the Brussel sprouts, karaage, katsu, open invitation roll, guided agenda roll, body and soul roll, secret weapon roll, and surprise ending roll. The restaurant is really popular so make a reservation a week in advance. A great spot for a date or dinner with friends.
Be the first to ReplyAstonishing.
I can't believe how amazing this place is. Everything was so perfect. This is now going to be in my top 5 favorite restaurants ever.
Be the first to ReplyI've been coming to Shizen for many years now but haven't
I've been coming to Shizen for many years now but haven't left a review. The service is good and the interiors are very unique. I'm glad they take reservations now which makes it so much better than going to the restaurant to join the waitlist and then having to kill 3 hours before you can get your table! I went with a group of 3 this time and we ordered quite a few dishes.Mushrooms small plate - 5/5. There were 3 types of mushrooms! Super yummy!Asparagus nigiri - 5/5. Wasn't expecting much from this but it was surprisingly good!Hidden agenda - 5/5. One of my favorites!Missing piece - 5/5. Hadn't tried this one before. It was really good.Surprise ending - 3/5 for the regular one, 5/5 for the spicy one. I got the surprise one which was super spicy but really yummy. The regular ones were ok but not as good as the other rolls.Boddy and soul - 5/5. Another great roll!Brussel sprouts - 4/5. The Brussel sprouts were decent. I liked the sauce.Prime suspect - 5/5. Decided to order one more roll even though we were quite stuffed! This didn't disappoint us either! Very unique flavor!
Be the first to ReplyI absolutely love shizen.
I love all small plates i've gotten so far, and the rolls as well. The quality is so fresh and flavors are so intentional. I especially love how it isn't forced to be an exact replica of non vegan sushi. The creativity is very apparent but still produces amazing flavors. The okra nigiri was really good! The truffle did indeed come through and the okra was grilled perfectly on the moist flavorful rice. I also enjoyed the shishito peppers, that had a bit of tang and were blistered perfectly. So far, I think my favorite roll is boddy&soul. It's creamy, flavorful, and I love tempura so a little crunchy but none of the rolls disappoint. The secret weapon was spicy and tangy. I loved the addition of pineapple which added a perfect sweetness after the spice hits your mouth. The missing piece was super fresh and actually kind of sweet, so if you're not a fan of tasting some sweetness in your sushi roll I wouldn't recommend this roll. The service here is super fast but I'd make sure to snag a reservation asap since it can fill up fast. I love the interior and how cozy it feels but also high end at the same time. Definitely ready to come back already!
Be the first to ReplyThe food was pretty good and impressive.
Who knew vegan sushi could be this delicious? The service on the other hand was less than desirable. We had to wait about 25 mins to get our servers attention to order. The server brought our drinks to us after about 45 minutes (after the food) of being seated. The food came out immediately but within 20 minutes of receiving the 1st item, the server said that the kitchen will be closing soon, and that we needed to place our last calls. We had not even received all of our dishes. We had a 8:30 reservation. I felt very rushed, I felt like I couldn't enjoy my food. Meanwhile, the tables around us were receiving their drinks and their food, but they were being taken care of by another waiter. The ambience is lively, it takes a few weeks to get a reservation, so highly recommend reservations. The nigiri sushi is the best, the okra, and the mango were my personal favorites. I would consider returning for the food only. Neither of us are vegan, so maybe we will come back, maybe we won't.

Amazing food!! Loved the variety and creativity! Can't wait to go here again. Great place for vegans
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food.
Hard to decide what to eat because of all the options. I enjoyed the tempura, and even more so because of how rarely I can find vegan tempura. Sushi was creative.Service is great but also interesting. They appear to serve all meals / parties in waves. Very friendly and gave good recommendations. The location is amazing. Loved the wood framing inside the restaurant. It made what would have otherwise been a very drab/typical interior and transformed it into an upscale, immersive experience. Can't wait to go back next time we visit SF.
Be the first to ReplyI have never been anywhere like Shizen.
I first had take out from them as a treat for my boyfriend's birthday, as he's vegan. I was very skeptical, but was very quickly persuaded by the *delicious* food. Better than most traditional sushi I've eaten! I liked it so much that I decided to go back to dine in for my own birthday. The space is very nice and elegant, and the service was great. This is a gem that SF should be proud to have!
Be the first to ReplyHad heard about this place before but had low expectations
Had heard about this place before but had low expectations since it's vegan sushi but the food totally exceeded expectations and it was so satisfying. For the most part I could tell the rolls did not have fish in them but it didn't stop me from liking them a lot. The "surprise ending" roll is fun - one of the pieces was spicy and the lucky person gets to take a shot of sake if they get the spicy piece. It's on the pricier side if you want to feel full but all sushi in sf are expensive so it's not a con. We had six people and were able to get reservation on a Saturday beforehand. Street parking was available

LOVE THIS PLACE!! My favorite dish is the Philadelphia roll with the smoked tofu. Have only done delivery and probs won't order ramen again and have it there in person. It was delicious but ramen for delivery is a little ridiculous if you ask me.
Be the first to ReplyAfter my third visit, I can solidly attest to the good food.
Different flavors & textures and an enjoyable ambiance to have a reasonable conversation without having to raise one's voice make this a good spot to go; aisle seating is good for about 45min but then it feels like I have to get up and move quite a bit. Not annoying; but uncomfortable. .
