Authentic Japanese restaurant
If you go to Melbourne, you should definitely go here! This is a traditional Japanese restaurant. I think it's expensive at night, but they have set menus for lunch at around $40-70. I think they sometimes offer a limited edition degustation course that matches with alcohol at night. The sashimi and sushi are delicious, and you can enjoy a relaxing 'Japanese' taste. I think most of the chefs and staff are Japanese. The service is polite, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is wonderful. I would recommend this restaurant to both Japanese and foreigners. I think many people use it for entertaining. It's a popular restaurant, so reservations are required.

I randomly picked Shoyo from the internet for a catch-up lunch with a friend and we were both incredibly impressed. We hadn’t booked but agreed to sit at the counter, up two flights of stairs. The “counter” is a beautiful table height wooden one, with proper comfortable chairs, where we got to watch the skilled chefs doing sashimi work as we ate. We chose the “Business Lunch” set menu which was fantastic value for the amazing quality ($65). The food was in lovely small, manageable quantities, but also sufficiently filling. The presentation was simply outstanding. The service was excellent and the music was pleasant and unintrusive, which is increasingly uncommon - the overall ambience was lovely. I will return here whenever I can.

We were walking by and decided to try Shoya for lunch. Large selection on the menu, but also a large selection of lunch time menus. We decided to go for one of the lunch time set meals and we were not disappointed. The Sushi and Sashimi were excellent, and everything else was very tasty. We had sushi, sashimi, eggplant, tempura, custard, teriyaki chicken, rice and miso soup. The menu also included ice cream to end but we were full so did not have it. I thought it was very good value for such a good quality and tasty lunch.

Food was cold and not enough.
Seafoods wasn't fresh, we can tasted the dried and smell of the unfreeze Crab and Bugs tail.
Their pairing Sake not even enough for all the dishes are required to have sake.
After the experience of disappointed meal last night. It kill my love for Shoya.
Set menu
Wife and I had the classic degustation menu, 12 year old had a chicken dish and the 7 year old 6 pieces of sushi. Loved it. And the ice cream at the end was fantastic, one was sesame and the other red bean.

excellent set menus. The Oysters were the best ever. Was relieved we didn't have to sit on the floor as I had heard. Service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyAlways something new at Shoya
Now that the lockdown is lifted (if you get in early) it's time to return to our favourite Japanese restaurant. Shoya has high quality ingredients cooked in an innovative manner. The degustation menu included a variety of sashimi chunks (including tuna) followed by savoury egg custard, and braised chicken on a bed of mashed potato. I had green tea to drink, foregoing my usual Megumi First Press. In all, for our first time back in several months, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.

Shoya serves contemporary Japanese cuisine. If you don't like sashimi -- that is, raw fish -- say so and they will cook it for you. I usually have the fixed menu, plus Japanese beer. Most people who dine here are familiar with Japanese food, if not, the waitress will be happy to instruct you. I am usually dining with friends, it's a good place to have a quiet conversation.
Be the first to ReplyJapanese cuisine is a culinary adventure
Shoya is one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne, it serves authentic Japanese cuisine. If you select the fixed menu you get a good variety of food at a reasonable price. I like sashimi -- a variety of raw fish, mainly fresh tuna. Good sashimi should be slightly chewy, but not rubbery. If you want a drink to accompany your meal, I would suggest Kirin Megumi, a "first press" beer that resembls a pale ale. Shoya is not cheap, bus as I was a guest, it didn't matter much, and it i s very good food. Shoya is in Market Lane, Chinatown, adjoining Floeer Drum.

First time had been here since last year and forgot to write that up. This time took overseas friends for the Classic degustation.
Quality of food was very high especially the sashimi and crab claw but all very good. Good service. Loved seating at sushi bar. Some bargains on the wine list if you look hard enough.
Only slight negative was they close up at 3 so not as slow-paced as I would like at lunch.
Pretty pricey but worth the money.
Pretty pricey but worth the money. It was recommended to me by a concierge at the hotel. So I had for lunch their special sashimi plate. If you like raw seafood you will like it. It’s best to make reservations as I think they are very popular.

We eat at Japanese restaurants in many countries - including Japan. We thought that the food here is amongst he best Japanese food that we have experienced. Many dishes were a taste delight - including their unique preparation of Edamame - special to this restaurant, the excellent sashimi dishes - their brilliant Vegan suitable options and the tasty soups - we so enjoyed the Miso Shiru that we reordered an additional dish each. We both are looking forward to returning and bringing other members of our family including our Japanese daughter-in-law.
