Shunji Japanese Cuisine Santa Monica Reviews from The Last Year
Sushi by chef Miki was phenomenal.
Everything was so tasty and delicious. My only complaint here was around the service. While Miki was very friendly, I expected more in terms of the waitstaff for the amount we're paying. I had to ask the waitress to refill my tea multiple times (she didn't check in on me) amongst other requests because she was emerged in flirtatious conversation the whole night with the gentleman at the end who was clearly a regular. Totally get that you have to cater to special clientele, but for $200/pp I don't think I should have to remind you of my requests, especially when there are just seven people at the bar total.

Delicious, creative fresh and most of all FUN night at Shunji Chef Shunji and his wife want people to relax, talk and have a good time! They are amazing genuinely loving people. It can be intimidating to dine at these experiences but Chef has a lovely friendly smile on his face. With only 6 seats per room in two rooms we chose Chef SHUNJI But next door David Chang & wife were dining with Chef Miki - too cool! Michelin star for good reason Will be back LOVED it! Street parking at meter was easy to find
Really terrific all around - service, food, ambiance etc.
Highly recommended and we will certainly be back!

One Michelin star Shunji (1) Shunji has two rooms, chef shunji room and chef miki room. Of course I have to try shunji room first! I felt that the chef was having a good time all night, and he chatted with us from time to time, which was still very happy. According to the order of serving, the appetizers are all light, the seasonal vegetable salad, the sashimi with dashi jelly are very delicious, and the sesame seeds are very good and fragrant. Then came the pickled Atlantic Bonito, which is said to be a very seasonal food that looks like garlic moss. The Manju is so delicious, it feels like mashed taro and radish, with a glutinous texture but a refreshing taste. Then the sushi started! They use red vinegar for their sushi. I can't remember the fish clearly, probably sea bass, goldeneye sea bream, and isaki first. They are all relatively refreshing fish.
Delicious omakase experience! Very fresh and great quality
Delicious omakase experience! Very fresh and great quality fish. A lot of appetizers mixed in like soup and hot dishes. Great wine and sake selection. There are 6 seats in this room which make it a very personal experience. Chef shunji was very accommodating and friendly. Good price point if you don't go crazy on alcohol ;)

The appetizers are all light, seasonal vegetable salad, sashimi with dashi jelly are very delicious, and the sesame seeds are very good and fragrant. Then came the pickled Atlantic Bonito, which was served with something that looked like garlic moss and was said to be very seasonal. The roots were also deep-fried. I didn't like this very much because I don't like anything related to garlic. Manju is delicious. It feels like mashed taro and radish. It has a glutinous texture but is refreshing. Then the sushi started! They use red vinegar for their sushi. I can't remember the fish clearly, probably sea bass, golden eye sea bream, isaki first, and I don't know the remaining two. This is the first part, they are all refreshing fish.

Overall this omakase was a good experience, but being in LA, there is definitely a ton of competition. Super fresh fish with a modern and intimate ambiance as expected. Some highlights from the meal: + Chef Miki was super sweet and our waitress was also very on top of it! + The best sake recommendations + Unique non-sushi/sashimi dishes

I ate at Shunji several years ago when they still had a Michelin star, but I believe the food is likely still worth trying for a special occasion. I recall them giving generous portions and many different courses both hot and cold. The cuts of fish were perfectly portioned. Two-thirds of the way through, the chef wisely asked if I'd like less rice per sushi otherwise I'd be too stuffed to go on. Very good service and ambiance befitting of a high end omakase restaurant.

Host was very unpleasant when one in my party was unable to attend due to a trip to the ER earlier in the day for the reservation. Most of the sushi was average at best and two pieces of sushi actually tasted bad. No way this should be a Michelin star restaurant.
invited here as a plus one.
super intimate and exclusive experience. each course is perfection agedashi tomato is a must!
awful, not great tasting and the chew-toro was more grisly
awful, not great tasting and the chew-toro was more grisly than an all you can eat sushi buffet. I had to walk to the restroom to spit out the gristle..... Avoid it at all-to-much -cost. better places to go!

It used to be located on Pico Blvd in West LA, but recently have moved to Ocean Park Blvd in Santa Monica. They now have two seatings with two chefs each in charge of their own bar. It is one of the best sushi spots in LA serving lots of exotic fishes not found at other sushi bars. Currently they just serve sushi, but they are suppose to bring back some of the cooked foods that they use to serve at their Pico location.
