Sir Charles Napier Chinnor Reviews from The Last Year
Another highly enjoyable lunch
Our experience over decades has been excellent. The food is superb and the service is always friendly. Maybe those who prefer minimalist London restaurants find the period piece charm not to their liking but we and all our friends appreciate the relaxed atmosphere in a stunning location well away from the rat race. The owner, Julie, is always on hand and all credit to her for maintaining top standards when other similar restaurants have failed. How she manages to employ staff in such a rural spot is beyond me. Sometimes they might make the most minor slip ups but they are all helpful and do their best. We eat out regularly but this is a restaurant - not a gastro pub - which we are happy to return to time and again despite it not being on our doorstep.
Delicious Sunday lunch
Superb Sunday lunch, absolutely delicious. Roast beef, roast pork and gnocchi for the vege in our group and all superb. Expensive but worth it.
Not worth a visit
Underwhelmed by the food, the customer service and the experience. We went for Mother’s Day and told them in advance that our 18 year old is vegetarian and asked about food choices for her. They offered her a vegetarian roast which consisted of half a roast onion and half of a swede (for which they charged us £25!). Our beef roast tasted no better than average and the roast potatoes were so crispy that it hurt to bite into them. To make it worse they brought the food out too quickly but then it took 30 minutes for our bill to arrive. We won’t be back
Disappointing in 2024
Our visit was most disappointing. A most peculiar and somewhat chaotic welcome, followed by poor communication throughout the meal. Two of the three meals were broadly inedible. The restaurant appeared bereft of attentive staff. I watched to see if anyone noticed how displeased my guests were, pushing food around their plates. Not a sense of it. Five persons now unlikely to return to this place. It is simply not to the standard one expects.
A Blissful Christmas Experience
The Napier, set in the delightful Chiltern countryside, has gone through something of a renaissance with the arrival of a remarkably talented chef, Andy Lewis. His dishes are enticingly presented with an abundance of taste and textures. Highly imaginative in the way he uses the seasonality of ingredients to enhance his recipes. And with consummate skill, he selects those sympathetic to the main ingredient rather than overwhelm it with competing flavours. Consistency is another of his virtues and a Michelin star surely beckons. The relaxed and welcoming environment Julia and her team provide will ensure we will return time and time again. Bryan K
Catering on a grand scale
We have been fans of this excellent restaurant for decades mainly having quiet lunches with friends but last night was a whole new experience. Namely as guest at a silver wedding party. Julie and her team were at their brilliant best with superb food and service for 70 of us. It could not have been better organised by our hosts or the restaurant.
Michelin standard food
The service was great. We were well looked after from the moment we walked in. The food was phenomenal. Great combinations of flavours on the menu. Worth every penny.
Sunday lunch
Our first visit for Sunday lunch. Lovely venue friendly staff. Food was very nicely presented although it wasn’t very hot.
Sad, Indifferent service and Luke warn food.
Disappointing from very start. We were looking forward to a special lunch but staff meet n greet and attentiveness was indifferent. Food was luke warm with very small portions of accompanying sides - even when told staff were ‘slightly’ sorry. Wine was not delivered to the table despite 3 reminders. Generally they were over inflated and overated .
Do you have any special dietary requirements? You do? Don’t come here.
This place trades on its reputation clearly. A decent Sunday lunch it’s fair to say. But one of the four of us is gluten intolerant and has some allergies. We weren’t asked about allergies when booking. Although the menu asks the customer for details of any special dietary requirements, we were told “This is very short notice, so there’s little we can do. You’ll just have the risotto as rice and garlic.” We were made to feel uncomfortable. And when ordering a dessert, our friend was asked “What, after all that…!?” - more disrespect for her condition. Won’t be back. Shame.
Outstanding food in beautiful setting.
Outstanding food in beautiful setting. Andy and his team are producing fabulous food that must be tried. It is innovative, exciting and beautifully prepared. The taster menu in particular provides a range of tastes and ingredients that give full range to the flare of the cooking.

The site doesn't have resources to properly execute a reservation transfer. Some places allow it however the best bet is to open a chat on the listing from the seller and communicate there

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
