Another highly enjoyable lunch
Our experience over decades has been excellent. The food is superb and the service is always friendly. Maybe those who prefer minimalist London restaurants find the period piece charm not to their liking but we and all our friends appreciate the relaxed atmosphere in a stunning location well away from the rat race. The owner, Julie, is always on hand and all credit to her for maintaining top standards when other similar restaurants have failed. How she manages to employ staff in such a rural spot is beyond me. Sometimes they might make the most minor slip ups but they are all helpful and do their best. We eat out regularly but this is a restaurant - not a gastro pub - which we are happy to return to time and again despite it not being on our doorstep.

Superb Sunday lunch, absolutely delicious. Roast beef, roast pork and gnocchi for the vege in our group and all superb. Expensive but worth it.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth a visit
Underwhelmed by the food, the customer service and the experience. We went for Mother’s Day and told them in advance that our 18 year old is vegetarian and asked about food choices for her. They offered her a vegetarian roast which consisted of half a roast onion and half of a swede (for which they charged us £25!). Our beef roast tasted no better than average and the roast potatoes were so crispy that it hurt to bite into them. To make it worse they brought the food out too quickly but then it took 30 minutes for our bill to arrive. We won’t be back
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing in 2024
Our visit was most disappointing. A most peculiar and somewhat chaotic welcome, followed by poor communication throughout the meal. Two of the three meals were broadly inedible. The restaurant appeared bereft of attentive staff. I watched to see if anyone noticed how displeased my guests were, pushing food around their plates. Not a sense of it. Five persons now unlikely to return to this place. It is simply not to the standard one expects.
Be the first to ReplyA Blissful Christmas Experience
The Napier, set in the delightful Chiltern countryside, has gone through something of a renaissance with the arrival of a remarkably talented chef, Andy Lewis. His dishes are enticingly presented with an abundance of taste and textures. Highly imaginative in the way he uses the seasonality of ingredients to enhance his recipes. And with consummate skill, he selects those sympathetic to the main ingredient rather than overwhelm it with competing flavours. Consistency is another of his virtues and a Michelin star surely beckons. The relaxed and welcoming environment Julia and her team provide will ensure we will return time and time again. Bryan K

We have been fans of this excellent restaurant for decades mainly having quiet lunches with friends but last night was a whole new experience. Namely as guest at a silver wedding party. Julie and her team were at their brilliant best with superb food and service for 70 of us. It could not have been better organised by our hosts or the restaurant.

The service was great. We were well looked after from the moment we walked in. The food was phenomenal. Great combinations of flavours on the menu. Worth every penny.
Be the first to ReplySad, Indifferent service and Luke warn food.
Disappointing from very start. We were looking forward to a special lunch but staff meet n greet and attentiveness was indifferent. Food was luke warm with very small portions of accompanying sides - even when told staff were ‘slightly’ sorry. Wine was not delivered to the table despite 3 reminders. Generally they were over inflated and overated .

Our first visit for Sunday lunch. Lovely venue friendly staff. Food was very nicely presented although it wasn’t very hot.
Be the first to ReplyDo you have any special dietary requirements? You do? Don’t come here.
This place trades on its reputation clearly. A decent Sunday lunch it’s fair to say. But one of the four of us is gluten intolerant and has some allergies. We weren’t asked about allergies when booking. Although the menu asks the customer for details of any special dietary requirements, we were told “This is very short notice, so there’s little we can do. You’ll just have the risotto as rice and garlic.” We were made to feel uncomfortable. And when ordering a dessert, our friend was asked “What, after all that…!?” - more disrespect for her condition. Won’t be back. Shame.

Outstanding food in beautiful setting. Andy and his team are producing fabulous food that must be tried. It is innovative, exciting and beautifully prepared. The taster menu in particular provides a range of tastes and ingredients that give full range to the flare of the cooking.

A lovely environment with beautiful gardens and a welcome real fire when we arrived. The garden and dining areas are full of beautiful ani.al sculptures, created by the owner's husband. Only one draught beer available, which was a shame. The staff were lovely, very friendly and welcoming, and the service was immaculate. I asked for fresh orange juice and was pleasantly surprised to receive blood orange juice, a welcome change from the norm. The food was mostly lovely and beautifully presented, but the pommes Anna were too salty. That was the only negative in a very pleasant experience.

Very bad and poorly managed. Owner/ host tried to use the shoddy offer discount. However, no thank you. As I rather go else well with warm plates and pleasant food and get what you pay for. Sorry not sorry.

I invited 6 gourmet friends to join me promising them a superb experience. They were not disappointed. Great atmosphere, excellent food and real ales and delicious value for money wines. A real treat
Be the first to ReplyGreat potential let down by poor execution
Oh dear. Pleasant welcome and atmosphere, great service, but unfortunately the food was mostly mediocre. A great looking menu felt like it had been conceived by a former chef, but was being executed by a subsequent replacement who really didn’t know what they were doing. All the elements were there, but few actually worked. Balance and seasoning were very poor. Starters had been prepared earlier and refrigerated, but only taken out on serving and consequently too cold and flavourless. Exceptions were the foie gras and ham terrine, which was terrific (apart from the runny fat it was served on) and the caramelised onion muffin. Unfortunately the nice looking malted bread had been sliced for an earlier service and was stale. This place either needs a chef with the talent to execute another’s recipes, or a totally new menu with dishes the chef is actually invested in. Such a shame!

Sublime. From the convivial roaring winter log fire as a warm welcome, to the relaxed professional pace throughout the meal. Food is truly excellent as ever. Fine wine time. All 7 of us truly thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Sophisticated rustic escape from the gloomy world portrayed in the media. Worth the journey every time.
Be the first to ReplyThe Best Restaurant around here
I visit the Sir Charles Napier up to 6 times a year and over 30 odd years it has just got better and better. The ambience is brilliantly relaxed - as is the bar and restaurant. In the summer the gardens are stunning. As is the food and service. I had my wedding anniversary lunch there yesterday - I couldn't have chosen better - and there are a lot of options round here. Treat yourself - one visit and you'll be hooked.
Be the first to ReplyAlright but not special
Pleasant enough welcome + with pleasant enough bar at which to have a drink while we ordered + somewhat limited, unexciting menu but some kitchen flexibility + mainly good food at a pleasant table (apart from a selfishly noisy group just behind us) with good service gave us an overall pleasant evening. But, it never really reached the standard required to be rated as Excellent.
Be the first to ReplyRustic yet elegant, delicious food and exceptional service
The restaurant has an elegant rustic charm that starts from the moment you walk through the door. We received the warmest of welcomes and were asked what we would like to drink before being invited to take a seat by the fire to take a look at the menu. This is such a lovely, relaxing way to start a meal. Instead of being ushered straight to the table you get the opportunity to sit in the most comfortable surroundings, next to a gentle fire, with a drink and a menu to look through. Top marks here, I was really impressed with what a difference this simple gesture makes. The pre-starter was a blue cheese and broccoli tart that we enjoyed whilst sat by the fire with a drink. We then went through to the smaller dining room, which was again very elegant and had a nice atmosphere. Soon some homemade bread arrived, an onion brioche and a brown soda bread, both delicious. We had the crab and the cheese soufflé to start, both of which were fantastic. The crab could have done with something slightly acidic to cut through the richness, nonetheless the dish was well executed and flavoursome. For mains, we had the shorthorn sirloin with crispy potato, brassicas and pickled walnut. This was unquestionably delicious, the beef was cooked to perfection and the accompanying potato with mustard seed garnish also fantastic. The two accompanying purées which one assumes consisted of brassicas and pickled walnut were a nice texture to go with the dish, but somewhat misplaced in terms of flavour, particularly the pickled walnut. We ordered a side of cabbage which was also very nice however in hindsight I wish we’d ordered the potato side dish too. The food was most enjoyable but to be blunt, for the standard of the food, the portions were just too small for the price of the dish. I appreciate that fine dining commands smaller portions and a mentality of “food not fuel”, however I wouldn’t say this dish was necessarily of the extremely high standard where a portion of this size would be acceptable. The lone stalk of tenderstem broccoli was a puzzling addition, and again, more than one stalk would have been nice. I would most definitely eat here again, the staff and owner are charming and very well rehearsed in providing exceptional service. I am especially keen to return for their Sunday roast as if not only looks fantastic, it appears to be a more substantial portion too.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic birthday meal
Despite living reasonably locally for the past 20 years we’d never got round to visiting before, but were looking for somewhere special to take my parents for their 80th birthdays. The Charles Napier didn’t disappoint! The warm and friendly welcome , exceptional food and wine and attentive service made this an evening to remember for all of us and we’ll definitely be back!
