Superb tasting menu of 6 (or 7) courses.
Six by Nico is a restaurant chain offering themed meals consisting of 6 tasting plates. The theme was "Hanoi" and the six courses were a fascinating taste of Vietnam perfectly prepared and served. There was no pressure to rush through the meal.
Be the first to ReplyHanoi Menu - Highly Recommend
Went to the "Six by Nico - Edinburgh" last Sunday night for middle evening sitting. Menu "Hanoi". All I can say was food was superb, hot & delicious. You can also flip between the Normal Menu & the Vegetable Menu, depending if you have a problem eating fish or meat or any other item on one of the courses. Course 5: Gòi Xoài - Tamarind Glazed Chicken, Sweet Potato Hash, Crispy Chicken Leg & Burnt Mango puree. Good dish, but Crispy Chicken Leg was sublime. Though they all seem small portion, you come out full and satisfied. Staff service was excellent as usual. Recommend, especially this menu.

We went to experience the hanoi menu six courses with 2 drinks . The food , flavours and atmosphere was excellent and our waitress Jazmine was so knowledgeable and a delight . Thank you for an excellent experience.

Amazing experience. Super lunch, fantastic attentive service, beautiful food and lovely ambience. The team are fabulous and deserve a big thank you!!!
Be the first to ReplyLukewarm, mediocre and u uninspiring.
Disappointing! Lukewarm tasteless food, poor, slow service and mediocre surroundings. Whatever you do don’t be early- you’ll be made to stand by the door until it’s your turn to sit. In our case that was 30 minutes! Added two drinks, a coffee and two small starters and ended up paying an additional £80, including a £20 service charge. Honestly won’t be back, the food was uninspiring, bland and for the most part, lukewarm at best. Only saving grace was the wine pairings which were excellent. Look at the rankings- there are literally hundreds of better places to eat than this which would cost you half as much!

I took my best friend here for a tasting menu with a gift card as a birthday treat. If you look at the review below, we were the ‘late’ couple in Edinburgh. In actual fact, we were only a few mins late after our 4:45 booking and had to wait in a queue for ten minutes. As others have mentioned, the waiting area in the foyer is tiny and you have to wait outside until a space is available to enter the restaurant. The front of house was nowhere to be seen during our wait. Once inside, we were seated at the booth next to the front door. We were waiting for ten minutes before being attended to and the waitress took our order from memory, we weren’t convinced that she had processed everything. We had to ask a few times for water and a wine menu. Our first course arrived before our drinks and we had to ask yet again. My water glass had lipstick stains on it and the aperitif drinks were were sickly and warm with no ice. The food itself was beautiful however the main course of pork was mostly fatty as others have mentioned. As feared, our extra of BBQ ribs had been forgotten about - we were advised that we could wait ten minutes for this with no real apology. As a frequent Nico’s customer, I was fairly disappointed. I was aware of the conveyor style plating up for the next sitting as we finished our meal. Starters were piled up for the next customers on the pass as we were waiting for our desserts which were frozen solid. It felt as though the servers were trying their hardest however the volume of customers at the sitting was excessive with the available staff. Such a shame that volume appears to be valued above the experience.

I visited here as I had bought a voucher for myself and daughter as a Christmas treat. Other family members had been before and raved about their experience. We arrived 5 minutes before our booking time and joined a large outdoor queue. The couple before us were offered a choice of 3 tables When the same person came to greet as I asked if we could have an internal table or the booth that the previous couple has been offered and turned down. I was then told that this was not an option and we were seated as a very small table opposite the entrance door. This meant that we were so close to the next table that we could hear their whole conversation, to make matters worse the party of 2 behind us was then offered the booth that we had been told we could not have! When I questioned this I was told that this couple arrived late and would be leaving early so was given the booth. Also that they would find us a table away from the draughty door, this did not happen and the host made no contact with us again! In reality the couple who arrive late left after us and no party of 4 arrived at 7 pm so this was very clearly untrue. This was not a great start to the evening and he obviously was not a very people person (or at least not to us). Thank goodness we had our lovely server Faith who made up for this. She was charming , helpful and knowledgable , although rushed off her feet while trying to assist some of her colleagues who were unsure of the courses being served. Had it not been for her service l would have marked our visit even lower. The food was well presented and tasty for the most , we had the vegetarian version and the only course we did not enjoy was the jackfruit which was very chewy with a strange aftertaste. Would I visit again…. I’m not sure , we felt very rushed getting seated about 15 minutes late and then only given 1 hour 45 to eat and leave, the experience given to us by the initial host was very unpleasant. On a positive we made the best of it and our sever was lovely and apologetic when we ordered coffees but advised that we would have to drink very quickly as she needed the table emptied. Not pleasant for her to have to say and frustrating we arrived well before our booking time which should have allowed 2 hours to eat and have a coffee. If you are thinking of visiting six by nico maybe research the branch you are visiting in advance to make you are going to get the best experience.
Be the first to ReplyHas gone downhill. Not value for money or good service
It is sad to see the decline in Six by Nico. This was our second visit with the first being a few years ago. This time around, it was clear to see that standards have slipped. On arriving, there was a queue to get in and, as only 2 people can fit in the foyer at a time, everyone had to stand outside in the cold. If you don't book well in advance, you will be extremely limited on time slots available. We had 9pm on a Sunday evening in February so you can imagine, it was cold outside! The front of house waiter seated us and was friendly and polite. Our server then came over to ask if we wanted water. It is quite loud in the restaurant and hard to hear what they are saying. After I said I did not want water, she left. When she came back, she got our drinks order but we waited a good 10 mins on the drinks to arrive with the first course coming before we got them. The glasses were not clean, the water glass my partner was given had a lipstick mark on it. All of the glasses, cutlery and plates smelled like dirty dishwasher which was extremely off putting when trying to enjoy a meal. The food was served quite slow and you could see the dishes waiting in the open kitchen with the Chef having to call service several times. Staff explain the course to you which is hard to hear given how loud it is and a bit overkill as the menu explains it all. It would be nice to be given the option to skip this part if you are happy just reading the menu. A couple of times, not just our table but others as well, their next course was served before fresh cutlery had been given leaving people waiting to eat their food. The food was okay but nothing special and, in my opinion, not worth £40 per person for what you get. Some of the food was not good quality. The Pork course contained a lot of fatty beef with the pork belly being 100% fat. It is naturally a fattier cut but should still contain some meat % Drinks are also super expensive with a small diet coke coming in at over £3!! When we asked for the bill, we waited 10+ mins for this despite others around asking after us, paying and leaving the restaurant before we even had the bill. The restaurant itself is compact with the tables being squashed in to allow a maximum number of people into the small space. We were seated at a corner table around a square table but were not able to sit directly across from each other, we were placed at either side of the corner on bench seating which I found to be extremely weird. It feels like the whole franchise is expanding and standard are slipping. It was an okay meal but we were still pretty hungry afterwards so definitely not value for money especially considering there are some all you can eat places in the same location offering much better quality for the same price. We won't be rushing back and certainly no longer recommend Six by Nico.
Be the first to ReplyGave it a try
Finger food on a plate. Dishes were as expected, small but adequate. None were exceptional. Ordered a large glass of wine, got a small one. Staff very friendly, a bit ott. Each dish was explained but could not hear what was being said. Did not detract from meal as menu explained each dish adequately. Good atmosphere. Toilets barely adequate, very small (cosy) but clean.
Be the first to ReplyVery Disappointed
I am writing this review on behalf of my parents who came to your restaurant yesterday. They were given a gift voucher as their Christmas gift from my daughters and although cringing when they told me, because they knew how much we'd spent on it, they said they were extremely disappointed and wouldn't be in a hurry to come back even though they've been before and thought it was good. Course 2 - mushroom. It was actually making both my Mum and Dad feel sick. They said it tasted of vinegar and my Mum couldn't actually eat it. When the waiter came to clear it away he said it was least favourite course too. I understand that might be the case but should you really be telling a customer that? It make it sound like it was a really unpopular course but was still served anyway. Course 5 pork. The pork was non existent and mostly fat and the onion accompaniment wasn't enjoyable. I want to make it clear that neither of my parents are fussy eaters so both felt very disappointed. They're both retired so going out for a meal is treat and this didn't feel like one. On the booking I said it was my Mum's 75th Birthday that day. Now I'm not expecting freebies just because of it being a special birthday but not a mention of it. Why have a comments box on the booking? Neither of my parents were asked if they wanted a drink and when the bill arrived my Dad hadn't even read it, never mind pay for it and he turned around and the waiter was standing with their jackets ready for them to leave. Nothing like making it clear their allocated time is over with! Which out of interest was less than 1.5 hours. Overall really disappointing for them and sadly me too as I bought the voucher. I honestly expected better and am gutted they didn't enjoy it.

Amazing food - we had the Tokyo regular menu. Such a great idea changing the menu theme every 6 weeks. Staff were very friendly. Explained everything and very knowledgeable about the dishes being served.
Be the first to ReplyBest So Far!
My oh my what an absolute triumph! We loved every course and cannot fault the entire experience. Yes it’s busy, yes you have a two hour slot but you know that before you come so no point in whinging about it. The fact that a restaurant that opens at 1200 is packed and buzzing by 1215 when we went in yesterday speaks for itself. Can’t wait for the next menu but Nico you will have to go some to beat Tokyo. Fantastic, delicious and a treat for the eyes and the tastebuds. Well done to the whole team and see you again very soon.
Be the first to ReplyTotally overrated, and we have no intention of a repeat!!
Fast food literally. A rushed experience by staff who describe each course in a repetitive monotonous manner. No time to savour our wine or to even chat about the food. Nothing special and we were rushed from start to finish. Quite awful and won’t be repeated !!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Experience
Was using a voucher given as a gift, and could not fault it. Exceptional food and wine, well explained by the waitress with some truly memorable flavours. Service is brisk, which I assume gets the throughput needed to offer such quality at the price, but no quibbles. An excellent experience all round.
Be the first to ReplyThe best tasting menu with high quality food
It is never disappointed coming for a meal. We get special sparkling drinks and aperitif for our birthday and wedding anniversary that is a total surprise. The menu of Tokyo is our favourite so far .
Be the first to ReplyRUSHED!!!!!!
We have been a few times and whilst we always enjoy the food we won't be back due to the rushing to get you through the food and out the door. We ordered the aperitif and our first course was put down to us before we had even had our drinks served. We didn't have the pairing wines for this reason as previously when we have had the wines they were mounting up in front of us due to the rushing of the service. Very disappointing for something that should be a relaxed enjoyable experience. Appreciate you are extremely popular and always sold out so unlikely to care about our experience.we were in the restaurant for less than 2 hours and our coats were thrust in front of us despite still having drinks to finish and told we had to leave as the table was rebooked. So rude!
Be the first to ReplyWow, wow, wow…….Fantastic
Had the pleasure of experiencing the Tokyo menu this weekend. We enjoyed every mouthful and made the most of the wine pairings. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh. The staff were very helpful and very knowledgeable about each course on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyA new experience, and we would go again.
service was very good and the food was different - an enjoyable experience. Restaurant was very busy at 12 noon on a Saturday.
Be the first to ReplyGreat way to experience a real mix of dishes
We really enjoyed our night out. Food was really good and tasty with a fantastic selection of wines. A nice way to spend a night and not hugely expensive.
Be the first to ReplyNeverland disappointment
We attended the restaurant on Sunday the last day of the Neverland menu and to say it was disappointing was an understatement, we actually felt ill after eating the meal. Every course was like pure salt bar one even the dessert was salted caramel, the smoky dish just tasted of pure smoke, I was sick when I got home and my friend wasn't very well either. I have been to most of the themes and really enjoyed them but this was awful expensive and the staff were rushing us bringing the first course when we still had snacks in front of us, we asked for a break and were giving about 2 mins really unacceptable for the cost of the meal your suppose to be able to enjoy the experience not be rushed so next sitting can come in. I will think long and hard before returning. What a pity
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming and disappointing
Some close friends recommended we visit as they had been quite impressed after visiting one of the Glasgow locations. Was looking forward to it and on arrival every table was full - Sunday night so that was a good sign , unfortunately all down hill thereafter. The Neverland menu looked interesting but found most dishes small and very salty Pizza - was tomato sauce, pepperoni and a parmesan foam with a few wee crutons, was very salty. Toastie - actually one of the better dishes and some nice additions like the golden raisin dressing. Rissotto - Disaster, was more like a claggy rice pudding - you could slice it, not a nice experience at all, no shellfish in it but the smoked haddock foam was tasty, this put us off the rest of the meal but we stuck with it - thought it must get better. It didnt, the fish was over caramelised, chewy and far too salty Chicken ballotine over cooked, dry and wrapped in parma ham which had been burnt, the gnocchi was undercooked and chewy. Salted Caramel desert was okay . When I asked my wife how the prosecco was - the reply was, not great. Overall they try hard with lots of fancy wee blobs of sauce, gels, etc but the main elements are woeful - chef needs to reign in the salt. wont be revisiting.
Be the first to ReplyWon’t be back
After years of dying to try this place I was bitterly disappointed in it. Went for the neverland menu and not one thing was something I’d ever order again. Tiny portions with tiny bits of sauce none that actually had any taste and clearly there for decorating the plates. Two of us were violently Ill for 3 days after probablt due to all dishes being reheated rather than cooked fresh.
Be the first to ReplyGood meal but not blown away
We went for my partner's birthday. The gentlemen at the door was a bit abrupt which wasn't a good start. We were presented with two alcoholic beverages at the table due to the "birthday" which unfortunately we didn't have as neither of us drink, the waitress was very apologetic and brought over two non alcoholic cocktails which were lovely. It would have been nice to have been asked and not presumed as we felt bad that these had been wasted. The waitresses were really friendly and professional and the food definitely got better as the courses went on. The first "pizza" course was just odd in taste and texture. The overall experience was good but felt slightly rushed at times. I think we would try another restaurant in a different city if we were visiting as the concept is very good.
Be the first to ReplyLovely lunch
Enjoyed my first time at this restaurant, celebrating a friend’s birthday with lunch and matching wines. Sometimes tasting menus can be pretty but not very flavoursome - certainly not the case here - lovely presentation and very flavoursome indeed. Also, one of the group is vegetarian and I have gluten and dairy free intolerances - we were very pleased with our food - fantastic substitutes with ingredients and didn’t feel like we were missing out, which has often been my experience at other restaurants. (We did give them prior notice.) The matching wines were all very nice too. The only minor criticism we had was being given red wine with the chicken dish; but other than that, really nice overall 😊

I'd been gifted a voucher for Six by Nico and I'm afraid to say, I'd never heard of it. Having now experienced my 6 course Hanoi themed meal with paired wines, I will definitely never forget it. Amazing venue, attentive & lovely staff and delicious food. Highly recommended.
