I have been coming to Skates on the Bay in the Berkeley
I have been coming to Skates on the Bay in the Berkeley Marina since it opened. I was disappointed today when I invited two of my colleague's to meet me for "happy hour" 4-6 pm and that discontinued Friday happy hour. It is now only Monday-Thursday so it cost us twice as much as we expected to pay, exceeding our budget, HOWEVER our sweet sincere waitress TARA saved the day! She is only 21 and new so we taught her a few things about cocktails, types of wine etc. I would recommend coming Monday-Thursday 4-6 pm and ask for TARA!

Appetizers get the W here! Our group first ordered their famous crab artichoke dip and calamari appetizers, for the main portion we ordered different sides and an entree that was recommended by our waiter (phenomenal BTW! I regret not knowing his name. David? Joseph? He has a star tattoo and it was his birthday! Great attitude and vibes!) What better combo than great conversation, food and libations in a lovely setting overlooking the Bay Bridge?!

I had never been to skates before and I was in Berkeley on my way back from San Francisco and it was such a beautiful afternoon I decided to take a road less traveled ha ha... After running my errand in Berkeley I went over the bridge to the other side of where the bay is off of telegraph and I followed this road down and ran into skates this restaurant sits right on the ocean and has windows all the way around it it's pretty much like sitting on a dock only it has windows. It was a Sunday it was busy I got a seat at the bar right away the bartender was helpful and I ordered a beer and then I ordered clam chowder and lobster chowder to go... The service is pretty fast a lot of people were eating brunch and everything looked great all the people looked happy it is a little loud but what are you expect it's Sunday brunch... I would go back probably for lunch to sit and enjoy the view All in all my experience was good even though it was just takeout the chowders were both fine the portions are a little small but I think a lot of places when they give to go orders now they downsize. Atmosphere is a four stars for sure... A great view of San Francisco passing through or as a destination I think it is a spot that everyone would be happy at .
Be the first to ReplyWhen I entered the restaurant there was a smell.
I think it may have been coming from the fish tank, which looked dirty. Also the women's bathroom was out of toilet paper (in my stall). Not a good experience. The food was good and the server was especially nice. The last time I ate at Skates it was a very pleasant experience. That was ten years ago. Management please get rid of the smell and check on the bathroom supplies. Your prices are in the mid to high range. I expect better...

It had been several years since I was here last, and was really disappointed by the mediocre service and food. Staff at the front desk were not welcoming or friendly. We were on time for our reservation, but were told 'they were behind', but no estimate on when we would be seated. When we were finally called after 20 min or so, the same woman at the desk then told us to be seated across from the raw bar. 5 minutes later someone came and 'beckoned' us. My husband had to ask her if we were to follow her! It didn't get much better...the wait staff acted as if she didn't care whether we were there or not. During the meal she may have come by once after the meal was served, and only again to bring us the dessert menu. When our food arrived, it looked like it was thrown on the plate, was lukewarm, and very little flavor. This experience was so different than what I remembered from before...Definitely will NOT be coming here again.

We had an event here and despite lots of calls, they were completely unprepared. The service was less than mediocre, mixing up multiple people's drinks. When we had them correct it they charged for the new drinks. They said they would refund the other drinks but never did even after multiple emails asking. The view is beautiful but after spending several thousands of dollars here over two years- we do not plan on returning.
Be the first to ReplyAs we walked to the place the view was breathtaking.
We had made a reservation 3 weeks in advance, the whole point was to enjoy the sunset. We were rushed at every point as soon as we got seated. It was not even a busy night. We started with the oysters which were fresh and tbh really great. The main course was decent too, we got the Moroccan mahi mahi, hamburger and salmon. However, as the view was getting prettier while there was plenty of food left at our plate we were rushed for a dessert menu. This definitely did not uplift our mood as if the gestures from the server was not more obvious enough for us to rush and not soak in the pretty view. Finally we ordered a molten lava cake, we had asked for an ice cream on top of it as a special request. The menu did say ask for a flavor which we did, only to be told sarcastically that "vanilla is the only flavor we have". The cake finally arrived nothing was molten, ice cream was bland with a half of scoop of ice cream. We finally showed modest sign of detest of the whole situation as the experience turned sour from the very start. In conclusion, the food is great, the view is even better but the service is horrendous. You can forget about enjoying the view without the server hustling you at every moment.

Haven't been in several years and agreed to go for my husband's birthday. Started off the night politely being told that our table would be ready shortly... no problem. Went to the bar to enjoy a drink. No seats were available so I stood at an opening and ordered my drink. While I was waiting for my order a bartender approached me asked me what I was doing there and that "I shouldn't be hovering over the customers" . I found this incredibly rude and unkind. If you don't want customers I'll go somewhere else. After that service and food was great. However, I won't be back given the treatment at the start of the night.

One of the best views I've seen at a Berkeley restaurant that's tasty and won't break the bank. Went to the restaurant on a Sunday morning with a large party. The wait staff was flooded with guests rights as the doors opened at 11:30 and with the array of reservations and walks ins, they handled it like champions. We were a large group and were sat a row away from the windows but it didn't matter because the view engulfed the experience. The garlic foccacia bread they place on the table was so dilectable. I ordered the Caramel Cafe , an espresso mocktail, which was sweet and smooth and the prime rib hash from the brunch menu. The food was a fun concept and was good minus needing more seasoning. I added salt, pepper and hot sauce to give it some pizzazz. I also tried the crabcake Benedict which was nice having the crab cake instead of the English muffin but could always use more crab. Once again the staff was amazing and even helped us place a larger bag we had in a coat check area. I would recommend this resturante for anyone seeking a beautiful, seafood/American fare with a gorgeous view.
Be the first to ReplyWe recently went there to celebrate my son's birthday.
For a Monday night it wasn't too empty or too busy. Since we went as a group, we had a good time. The food was decent. The salmon in seafood trio was mediocre though. The service and the ambiance was great. The view was awesome as we sat right next to the window. They also have complementary crรจme brรปlรฉe for the birthday boy which was awesome. The fried banana split was very enjoyable.

We found Skates on the Bay when we recently had an appointment in Berkeley and were looking for a place close by. We were wanting to miss traffic going home so we took our time. We started out with each having a cocktail - their Mai Tais are superb. We split a California roll as an appetizer with some fries. We enjoyed a view of the beautiful sunset on the Golden Gate Bridge across the bay. Then, we split the Sesame Seared Ahi. These were all delicious. All in all, a pleasant evening before we journeyed homeward. The bill was slightly over $108 (not bad for Bay Area prices). However, beware that they charge a "Living Wage surcharge" so we deducted that before computing our tip. Sorry, not up to us to pay for health care in place of the employer. Cheers!

I just had to give 3 stars because I was so embarrassed when I took my kids here for our outing .. it smelled like urine as soon as you walked in .. like as if I had just walked into the a public restroom...all customers walking in said the same thing and if they didn't the face showed.. and I was surprised because I have been here before. So maybe some type of issue going in...Now food lol .. it was good and we were pleased and happy the smell didn't follow us so glad ... nice water view

Great service and views! Spent dinner time here and ordered the prime rib, crab dip, key lime pie and all were quite good!
Be the first to ReplyWell don't come here for the service because it sucks.
... No personality. Our server couldn't wait to get away from our table.... Never checked back on us just asked what else he could get us before running away again. Your totally judge on what you wear. It's so sad. This restaurant is so beautiful with a beautiful view of the bay .... But the service just ruins it ruins everything. My shrimp in my shrimp trio were well over cooked, the salmon was dry potatoes had no flavor. If I'm going to spend $200 on a damn meal I expect way better service than that so annoying you want a good meal you pay an arm and leg to have rushed service, no personality, no check backs. He asks me after we're finished with the meal if I wanted another glass of wine .... No. Not now that my meal is finished not to mention he practically threw the boxes at me or tossed them rather aggressively in my direction We will never come back. There's a thousand more restaurants with great views and way better service .... Two stars because the food was alright
Be the first to ReplyHad a great experience for brunch/lunch.
Staff were all great. Poke salad with ahi was delicious. Friend's hash was generous and good tasting. View is panoramic.

Skates is classic seafood restaurant right along the Berkeley marina. Get ready to take in the views of you decide to sit along the window seats. Overall solid experience and food is fresh
Be the first to ReplyWell after having stomach issues and being on the toilet
Well after having stomach issues and being on the toilet for several hours it's safe to say the food is horrible. Service is stellar, the view is killer, and the cocktails were perfect. But a waste of a few hundred dollars for a dinner for 2. I'mNot going to give a list of things the kitchen did wrong because it's too many and because they truly don't care.

The atmosphere is great, food pretty good but not the best, and service is good and bad. I love that you can see the water right there I love the honey walnut shrimp and lobster bisque. The kids chicken tenders and cheeseburgers are okay, as expected. The dip was so good but the bread as so hard, might as well use crackers.I liked the complimentary bread as well but still pretty hard.We also got other meals but I didn't bother taking a picture. The service of the waiter was good BUT, the food took so long that I thought they just forgot about us.They took long enough that I wanted to cancel the meals
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely good food.
Sushi is also really fresh and good selection of rolls. The seafood dishes here are definitely worth coming back repeatedly. The seasoning is light, abs the taste of the seafood shines through perfectly. Service is a hit or miss. Friendly staff, but even on a weeknight, with a half empty restaurant, service can be painfully slow. Came here twice and both times there was a lull in service where we had to wait over 30 minutes after requesting the check. There was also a wait of 10-15 minutes when we asked for utensils or condiments during the meal. It's a fine dining restaurant with breathtaking beautiful views...and you can get a clear, unobstructed view of the Golden Gate Bridge if you're seated at a table by the windows.

Mussels are a must! This was my first time here and decided to try their Cabernet Sauvignon menu which did not disappoint. For the entree I went with a seafood pasta. Ambiance is good, lighting isn't dim but a bit cold. You are by the ocean, both a pro and a con since you are basically over the water when you eat :). Food is 10/10 it's too good to express

It was fast seating when I scheduled my reservation last minute. It was for me, and as I recommended on the reservation I wanted to treat myself near the water which I was able to get near seating by myself I was able to have a peaceful time. The food was amazing bread, crab artichoke and crab/ shrimp pasta.
Be the first to ReplyOverall, the food is okay but the location is great.
Being in the bay with a view of the golden gate makes anything taste good. Here are some more pictures!

It don't get no betta than dis. Lost count how many times we've dined here. Fantastic menu. This night, we had the privilege being served by Sandra Bullock's body double The version from "Speed". The Negroni was almost as good as the one I make at home All told, attentive and responsive service -- even on what seemed to be the busiest night of the year. Never been disappointed. Excellent dining experience.
