definitely one of my top picks in the bay! its so hard to find great soba noodles, but this spot is the best :) the space is pretty and although, the line does get long, it's definitely worth the wait and worth the longer drive to oakland

It was my first time ordering soba noodles at any restaurant. After my first bite, my eyes widened as I looked to my friend and said, "Damn, why haven't I eaten soba earlier?"The entire meal was immaculate. The tempera was lightly coated and not oily, the broth had the right amount of salt and umami, and the tuna appetizer was fresh and delicious. But the star of the show was the soba noodles. It was cooked to perfection!! Not a single strand of mushiness in sight. This place get bonus points for easy parking and for having a cute outdoor dining setup with standing patio heaters to keep customers warm and cozy during their meal.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a very hidden restaurant.
It's on a side street and the entrance isn't very obvious. But once you're inside there is a very nice ambiance with both indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the window but there are menus available. I will say that this is a pretty pricey place. Most of the dishes ranging around 20 or so dollars. I ended up getting the duck soba and someone else got the herring soba. I will say that the herring soba was probably better than the duck though I always enjoy a medium rare duck. It was primarily because the soup of the duck was sweeter than that of the herring which had more of a soy sauce taste. The caveat being that the hearing head bones still and it required being very careful with eating.

Located in a strange, somewhat shady area in the middle of an industrial area in Oakland but don't let that fool you. Soba Ichi is a truly hidden gem.I came here sometime last year since I had a craving for soba after having the best soba of my life in Hawaii. I was pleased to see that there's a place specializing in soba in the bay! I went here again recently, taking out an out of state friend here. I ordered the karaage and it was really juicy and flavorful! My friend was amazed by it and said it's one the best karaage he's had. We both ordered different hot soba- I ordered the tempura soba and he ordered the Nanban soba, which comes with duck. The broth was piping hot, perfect for the rainy weather. The broth is light and complements the noodles and the tempura. The tempura also comes with a green tea salt that I really like!Since it's been raining cats and dogs, the outdoor seating area is obviously closed during rainy season. Luckily we only had to wait maybe 5 minutes or so for a table to be available for us. The menu changes every now and then, and I've yet to try their desserts- I've heard great things about them. Their dishes are on the pricier side, but the quality has been consistent.
Be the first to ReplyNice spot.
Kind of in the middle of nowhere in West Oakland it feels like. Came here with a large group of 8 and we all ordered at the cashier, so it's best to know what you want before you get to your turn so you don't hold up the line. Hot soba was a good call for the night. It was good. I think I'm more of a udon noodle person though. Also tip: If you're more than 4 people, you'll probably need to sit outside because the tables inside are not large enough.
Be the first to ReplyNot much of a Soba fan, but here we go.
The outdoor area is really nice and the location is kinda awkward for this place but it is a nice little gem.We ordered tofu, karage, and some rice.Only thing I didn't like was the tofu, it was cold... when it came out, I was expecting something like agedashi. This isn't your typical japanese restaraunt. So before you go, check the menu and make sure you like soba noodles. The chicken is excellent and the broth from the soba is outstanding as well. It's a bit pricey, but what isn't in CA.

Tucked away at the end of magnolia street in a residential/industrial neighborhood of west oakland is Soba Ichi. Formerly the location of a tasty pizza joint. Their menu is forever changing. Which is cool because you can keep trying new things. It's a bummer if you fall in love with something on their menu. Like their vegan eel which we have yet to catch there again. The ambiance/vibe is very moody, cute, and Japanese in aesthetic. The seating is mostly Japanese style booths except for one accessible table to the right when you enter. Not the most fat friendly or disabled friendly spot. We sat near the door and for obvious reasons it was really cold. The food was really special. Each dish was fresh, had complex flavor profiles. Lots of umami. My favorite was the omelette. Such an incredible texture and flavor. The service was ok. It was a super busy night and so I get it. We were only asked once if we wanted more water but there is a self serve station we discovered after walking around to find the bathroom where we were able to get water refills ourselves. You order outside and then get a number. So while the food is "fancy" don't expect the service to be the same as a fine dinning restaurant. Dishes I recommend (note menu changes frequently so these may not be here when you go):-Homemade Tofu with Negi & Myoga (not pictured is the soy based sauce we poured over it) this dish was so tasty. Simple but delicious. The sauce was so good we dipped our omelette in it to enjoy every last drop. -Tamagoyaki - Japanese savory omelette with shredded radish as a palette cleanser- this was my favorite dish. The layers were immaculate. The flavor was so umami and INCREDIBLE. Next time I will order my own. I didn't want to share this one . -Kale & Roasted Kobocha Salad - roasted kale, roasted kabocha, roasted tomato, blue cheese crumble with miso walnut dressing - this salad was really good. The blue cheese created this really nice sharp complexity to the flavor profile. The kale was supple and had been well massaged. The tomatoes were sweet and perfectly roasted. And while the dressing didn't photograph well is was absolutely delicious and creamy. -Veggie Soba - soba noodles in hot soup topped with bok choy, grilled bean curd, negi & yuzu (vegan) - this soup was simple but so incredible. The noodles were fresh and delicious. The broth was sooooo soothing and the spice gave it a little punch. Really loved it. -Soba no Mi Pudding - this dessert was so special. I would describe it as a Japanese crème brûlée. It was giving me custard vibes more than pudding in terms of consistency. It was topped with toasted buckwheat berries which gave it a delicious crunch with was a nice contrast to the sweet and creamy pudding.

The soba was wonderfully warm on a chilly night and it left me feeling surprisingly light. The flavor was pleasant and I felt full after eating it. I was particularly impressed with the texture of the noodles. We ordered the ice cream for dessert and it carried a subtle flavor and was not too sweet. The line is a little long and it does get cold out. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to spend a night chatting with friends and sipping on an honesty tasty bowl of soup.

Good, but pricey! If you want some tasty soba in a cute spot, check it out. Depending on when you go, be prepared to wait in line. Menu changes, and everything always tastes fresh and thoughtfully done.

4.5 starsExcellent food. The place can be a bit on the colder side during winter evening. One must line up to order at the window and then sit down. On the pricy side for soba but well worth it. Super nice and friendly staff. MUST HAVE:duck sobaSoba with tempuraThe sobas here are amazing. I read a few reviews on 80% vs 100% wheat soba. Now they only carry one - 80%. So no need to sweat on running out of 100%.The texture and taste of the soba is perfect. A bit of nuttiness from the soba but completely smooth on the tongue. The broth is clear and beautifully flavorful. The anti-thesis of the rich pork ramen broth from the Japanese ramen places. Ultimate comfort food. The rare duck breast is perfectly cooked and the tempura lightly fried. Perfectly executed dishes. SOLID:Soba no mi pudding - crunchiness on top of the not-so-sweet pudding. My mom and I enjoyed sharing this. OK TO SKIPKale and kabocha salad. Decent but not a standout comparing to the farm to table places in the bay area. Didn't love the cheese on top. Pickeled vegetable. Standard. I also really liked the hojicha tea and flavored sake (summer sake with tangerine flavor)
Be the first to ReplySoba to die for! Rich umami flavor.
Delicious freshly made noodles. Beautiful ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyHandmade noodles on site, they do run out.
Japanese type of culture. A hidden treasure, buckwheat type of noodles. Also tofu, which is very good. The tempura (duck) is good, a smoky broth.
Be the first to ReplyI'm a ramen guy but every so often I'll branch out.
Pho here, udon there. And in this case, soba. It's a very refreshing alternative to more heavy noodle soups, with thin buckwheat noodles in a light broth. The soba at Soba Ichi was the perfect place to grab some buckwheat noodles, and the duck breast they added on top added the perfect savoriness. My friends and I also got the herring and Japanese roast beef as appetizers. Haven't had them before but loved it. That's kind of the vibe I got from this place- delicious authentic eats that I generally don't find. Really awesome!
Be the first to ReplyStill the gold standard for tempura and soba.
Their changing side dishes offer a nice balance to the soba. Very glad they haven't sacrificed any quality to stay in business! Would go back every week if I could, it's THAT GOOD!

I've never been to Japan but soba Ichi is what I imagine a proper Japanese meal is like. There is always a huge line. Pro tip is to arrive 20-30 min before they open to be the first ten parties in line. Otherwise you're standing in line for 30-40 min. No reservations. You line up, order at the cashier, and find an open table - plenty of outdoor tables and some indoor. The food felt very authentic - except for the "sushi" which felt more like a chunk of soggy rice, too much ginger, and a very thin slice of fish. Definitely don't get. The tempura soba was pretty good, very clean tasting. The salad had some strange gooey white tuber vegetable - don't recommend either. The octopus / calamari fried balls were good! All in all, this place is fresh and healthy but nothing blew me away.
Be the first to ReplyDespite my feelings towards another reviewer's 1 star
Despite my feelings towards another reviewer's 1 star review posted 3 days ago, I had to come try this for myself since there are so many good reviews.I'm keeping it 100 and warning you now... you're going to leave this place feeling like you've overpaid for average tasting food. High chance that you'll be unsatisfied and you might even still be hungry afterwards. We ordered:1) $16 Japanese Style Roast Beef = Roast Beef you can get at Costco with sweet soy sauce and wasabi... Portion size was smaller than my girlfriends fist...2) $14 Maguro Yamakake = Tuna with sweet soy sauce and a type of horseradish that they called "mountain yam". Didn't taste great.3) $24 Ten Seiro (Cold Soba) w/ Assorted Tempura = Cold noodles were under cooked & hard. Soba sauce is average and nothing special. Tempura was not just a small portion but the veggies sizes were the smallest I've seen at a restaurant...4) $25 Kamo Nanban (Hot Soba) = probably the better dish we had. It's got a few slices of duck in it. But it didn't wow us for the price we paid.Rounded to $100 with tip... Honestly... I haven't been this disappointed and unsatisfied eating out for so long... Maybe all these people who gave them 5 stars have a completely different taste bud than I do. But I'm pretty certain that they just get fake reviews. Gonna keep it 100, don't waste your money here.

The food is delicious and the most reminiscent of Japan of anywhere I've eaten in California (or the US overall). I like to arrive about 4:45pm and sit outside at a shaded table. Anytime I'm back in Oakland, it's high on my list to have a meal here. So appreciative the owners, chefs, & staff have brought this place to the neighborhood.
Be the first to ReplyConflicted about the rating.
5 stars for the food, 2 for the wait and prices. This is our second time visiting after a traumatic 2+ hrs wait in our first visit. We made sure this time to be one of the first groups for dinner by queing up at 4:15 pm.. Sunday dinner technically starts at 5 pm, but if you get here at 5 pm, expect ~1 hr to get your food. To be fair, the staff seems to have learned from the many negative reviews blasting the wait time and have become faster overall. On to the food, it is the only reason why we'd endure waiting in line. Soba broth is delicious but the real star I believe is the soba. Someone commented that the noodles were undercooked, I think they might have been confused by the chewiness of handmade soba. This isn't your Mitsuwa food court fare for sure. My boyfriend got his favorite kamo nanban and I decided to try the vegan soba. Unlike other vegan dashi I've tried, there's actually tons of umami flavor in the soup. I wish it would have come with more veggies though, like a sansai soba. The shichimi they serve with the soba is very fresh and actually spicy so caution if you are a spicy food lover like me and used to putting in a tablespoon of that stuff. We also got the chashu and pressed sush appetizers. My boyfriend enjoyed the chashu. We both agree that the sushi was very light due to the halibut. It was overshadowed by the shiso and rice. I feel like they could have chosen a more flavorful fish, like mackerel or katsuo, or fatty fish like yellowtail or salmon. Overall it really hit the spot after a day of tomfoolery at PP. We ended up spending close to $100 so this is definitely a splurge. I really appreciate how the chefs are always experimenting with new flavors and menu items. We will definitely be back!

Waited 40+ minutes to be served the wrong appetizer and still without the noodles. Service is terrible. When I asked for a time check... I was waved off. Cmon now. The service is really terrible. Edit - okay now that noodles are here, the disaster continues. The portion size is small. Absolutely not worth $20+. The noodles are undercooked. The soup base is salty without much flavor. I really believe the soup packs at your local Asian market will beat this out.

Went with some friends yesterdayThere was a very long line and limited parking in the area. Make sure to arrive as early as possible. My friends got there at 5:30, we sat down at 6:45pm, and finished around 7:45pm.We had a big group and it was difficult to sit together if you have a group larger than 6. Once it's your turn to order, the cashier will ask you to order everything you want instead of trying to come back to the long line and order again. Here are the items that we ordered: Cold Soba, cold soba with tempura, ume oroshi soba, Kamo Nanban (duck soba), appetizers--handmade tofu and pork belly char siu--and vanilla pudding. My tofu and pork belly came out within 5 minutes of us sitting down. The pork belly came lukewarm in a granite plate with mushroom, salad, and a piece of thin bread. I have to say it was the best appetizer there since it was well marinated and has an equal distribution of fat and meat. The tofu ($7) was a disappointment though. The kamo nanban was okay. I like my noodles firm and duck meat but the soup was quite salty and not hot enough. The duck meat was alright but it wasn't a sufficient amount of chewy duck meat for $25/bowl.Once we finished our food, our waitress came and asked if we're ready for our desserts. I'd highly recommend the vanilla pudding. It reminded me of flan or crème brûlée. Best way to end a meal.
Be the first to ReplyHave dined in Hokkaido with soba masters and this is fine
Have dined in Hokkaido with soba masters and this is fine for the states. The highest skill is 100% buckwheat which is very difficult and unbelievable . Most like this is 80%. Overall, overpriced for the portion sizes. Had few appetizers and 5 bowls. $250. How many times are people going to do that? Either up the size or lower the prices especially for the environment outside.

Helpful and courteous staff, amazing fresh, authentic Japanese country style food. Try the house made tofu.. pleasant outside and inside areas, gorgeous presentation. Amazing Sake selection. On Magnolia off of West Grand easy to get to. and lots of street parking..
Be the first to ReplyEverything here is delicious.
In addition to noodles, they usually have an interesting selection of appetizers and a few other entrée-sized options. If it's your first time, I highly recommend trying the soba with tempura, it's perfection.
Be the first to ReplyAs being soba lover from Japan, authentic soba noodles are
As being soba lover from Japan, authentic soba noodles are almost impossible to find in US. So when i heard of this place, I have been wanting to go to find out how it is.Only open for evening makes it hard for us from peninsula to come and theres this line we heard. We went on Saturday around 6:00pm. The line was about 30 min but once we ordered, we could sit immediately. Menu is small but authentic. For two of us, we had tenzaru, kogomi gomaae, yamaimo salad, tamago and tenpura soba. We enjoyed everything we tasted and soup was delicious. Staff were friendly and I felt their love and passion for the food they make. We will come back again for sure. Could not give five star because of the inconvenience. Wish we can make reservations.

There is usually quite a line up upon opening so found myself super lucky to walk in and be the next to order. Usually you can find the location by looking for that line of people but if there isn't one, don't second guess the GPS. This restaurant really is behind the industrial fencing on this West Oakland street.Been going since they first opened and recently went back after some time away. Super sad that they are no longer offering the 100% buckwheat version since it was simply the best and set them apart. Even in Japan it's hard to come across so we were very lucky to have it even for that short period. The nuttiness that buckwheat has was amplified and the texture firmed up.The new set up has you going to the window to order and pay before grabbing a spot. Indoor and outdoor (dog friendly) seating are available.Set the number on your table and the servers bring the food to you. This time I got the hot tempura soba. The noodles weren't mushy with a more gentle buckwheat flavor. The broth was seasoned well and perfect in the nippy air. For the tempura, thought the batter was light and fried to just being crispy. Got one each of shrimp, mushroom, kabocha, and okra. Unfortunately, the shrimp was somewhat waterlogged which affected the taste. After getting a taste of the noodles straight, I added the togarashi which turned it into a slightly different adventure. Also got the soba cha gelato but it was icy rather than creamy. Felt like I got one of the freezer burn or older ones so after taking a few bites to make sure I didn't just get a bad spot, I closed it up. Very sad since the idea was interesting.
