Real japonese restaurant with the best tempura and bento boxes
We had lunch special with the bento box with heel and miso ramen soup . The place is very clean . The service super nice and the food very good . You should go there for lunch . A little pricey but it s New York .

We had a nice lunch with a focus on the home made soba noodles. The food was fresh and tasty. The Agedashi Tofu was delicious. The restaurant is fairly small but we were able to get a table, mid day with no issues. 5ths service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyVery good food, ordering is key
Good food was helping in my visit from a friend who had been many times before, and guided me through the ordering process โ not complicated, but realizing that an order of fish was just that and didnโt come with noodles, rice, or veg, then makes planning you order of noodles, and veges important. I went for the baked black cod which was cooked perfectly (moist throughout and with a hint of crunch on the outside). I added a small plain noodles with dipping sauce which was good and plenty big enough for most. Ordering some veg, either for yourself or for the table will round out the main course nicely, the veges being nicely cooked, and served with just a subtle hint of seasoning. I also tried the pork belly, which was delicious, but stopped just short of the perfect melt-in-your-mouth that you can sometimes find at a good Asian restaurant. The green tea brรปlรฉe was a nice ending to the meal, and not overly sweet.

A good place for soba. Recommend to go for just the soba as we found the appetizers pretty mediocre. Overall service was good though.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic Soba in a Quaint Little Space
I really love eating at Sobaya! The place is nicely sized off a side street in East Vil; usually there is only a small wait on weekends. The service is really friendly and the menu is pretty broad with many options. They have nice soba combos or more specialized sobas. My favorite is their sansai vegetable soba. This place is one of the few restaurants that serve this many types of soba and specializes in it. Overall amazing quality and competitive prices.
Be the first to ReplyNice Space, food good too
Got here at 7pm but it was already packed ( they don't take reservations) - we put our name on the list and 45 mins later were called back to a table. Our waitress was not overly friendly. We ordered tempura, spinach salad, agedashi tofu and a fish dish with rice. The food did not take long to come. It was all good, although the tofu portion was rather small. The green tea ice-cream dessert was just average. In a street full of Japanese restaurants this is on elf the better ones.

Popped in to Sobaya before checking our Yesterday at the AMC on 12th and I'm glad we did. Edy and I always have Japanese food in any city we visit and Sobaya is up there with the best of them. Edy opted for tuna tartare to begin and I had tomago (Japanese omelette) both were delicious. For main I took cold soba noodles with seaweed & yams which was nice and Edy took hot soba with prawn, bean curd, shiitake mushrooms and tomago. These were fantastic and the broth it was served in was amazing. We had a little ice cream with red bean for dessert which was cool too. The rice wine was strong and we both left feeling a nice little buzz. This place is a must if your in East Village. Brilliant!
Be the first to ReplyOshibori
Sobaya is such an iconic East Village jewel, servicing delicious Japanese comfort food at reasonable prices. Iโve been a satisfied customer for literally decades. Which is why I was so surprised last week to learn about the decision to discontinue passing out oshibori to guests. Understanding that most Americans donโt understand the custom, so on the surface, it may feel like a waste of money to hand out towels that go unused. The fact is that oshiboris are a critical component of the Japanese dining experience, not only providing a welcome and refreshing moment to clean up before digging in, but also on a deeper level, signaling to the customers the authenticity of the restaurant. They simply cannot be eliminated without a having a significant negative impact on the authentic customer experience that is โSobayaโ. Whatโs next - swapping out disposable wooden chopsticks for plastic ones in order to save another few dollars? Friendly message to the Manager - sometimes itโs the small things that make the biggest difference. Please take great care before making such decisions!
