Place was empty and we were seated right away when we arrived around noon on a Wednesday. Service was super quick; the food arrived probably under 10 minutes of ordering. My friend and I both got the Wednesday Donburi lunch special. The salmon in the Sake Ikura don was (surprisingly) good - super tender and almost melt-in-your mouth. The soba noodles felt a little undercooked but were otherwise unremarkable. Also, I felt that the portion sizes were on the smaller side for the price ($18 for the lunch special which was reasonable, but $22 full price).Would I come back? Eh, maybe - but probably only for the lunch special. (P.S. The bathroom has one of those built-in bidets + seat warmers that I'm too scared to use ... but if that's your vibe, go check it out lol it was a really nice bathroom)

So very disappointing! We were expecting really good food from all the wonderful reviews.Instead, our very expensive delivery order was a B- at best. The shrimp tempura main dish had only 3 pieces- all of them soggy on top of a large bucket of plain rice. It would have been easy to wrap the shrimp in tin foil to keep them crispy, but no care was done int he packing. In fact, the whole bag of food leaked.!The other dishes were also unimpressive. The tempura noodles dish, miso soup, and shumai were all rather ordinary.we will not be ordering from here again, for sure

A solid place for dinner! I loved the broth and soba noodles and didn't think it was too expensive for the quality you get. Food comes out pretty fast but it can take a bit to get seated. The shishito peppers are also a great starter to get!
Be the first to ReplyThis place never disappoints me.
I have been going here for over a decade and their quality remains top-notch!I usually order their cold soba noodles and upon my most recent visit, saw that they had a great combo (a choice of noodles) and (choice of rice dish). Their soba noodles are great, and come with a great dipping sauce.Tempura was also delicately fried, and not overtly oilyAlso, if you have ever wanted to experience a Japanese bidet, at least one (maybe both, I only accessed one bathroom) of their bathrooms has them. The bathroom is very clean and the bidet is very warm and fancy with multiple options to customizeService is also great, friendly and quick! In the past, I used to have to wait for up to 15-20 mins. On my most recent visit, which was a Saturday afternoon, there was no wait at all!
Be the first to ReplySoba is perfect for a light meal.
I wasn't feeling all too hungry, so my friend and I split a hot tempura soba. The portion is generous and perfect to share between two people who might not want to eat too much. The shrimp tempura was done well. The shishito tempura was mostly mushy sans the batter. The batter was decently light and airy. However, I thought the soba was a tad overcooked, and the broth was too salty.Staff were friendly and didn't rush us. They even came by to ask for last orders. The soba was pretty average. I might come back for the lunch set because it seems like a good deal, but it wouldn't be my first choice for noodles.

My friends and I decided to try Soba-ya because of the many 5 star reviews and popularity. We ordered the nabeyaki, cold dipping noodles, and a udon that came with duck meat. The nabeyaki was mids, the soup had barely any flavor, two pieces of fish cake and 1 tempura.. that was it. My friend who also got the nabeyaki was disappointed as well. The duck meat udon was super gamey, dry and tasted like card board. The dipping noodles were decent but the noodle portion is lacking. I give high ratings for the service and the clean bathroom though! Also their hot tea is delicious, they charge $1 per cup but offer refills. Would I come back? I don't think so since there's better options in the area.

If you've been following me for a while, you'll know that I'm a fiend for soba noodles. The lightness of each noodle and balance of flavors makes it one of my favorite dishes.Soba-ya definitely doesn't disappoint. This here is the Ikura Oroshi, cold soba topped with ikura, seaweed, & grated radishes... it's pretty much the perfect bowl. Pour the dashi over the noodles and enjoy it with the wasabi.@phidingthefam
Be the first to ReplyFive stars because the eel over rice was phenomenal.
Like, damn. I'm coming here for eel rice, like, forever.Note to self: fried chicken was good but they don't provide any sauce .
Be the first to ReplyI was here with one other person.
The service was friendly. We got some tea to start and ordered an appetizer from the special section. This was listed as simmered eggplant and I believe it was Nasu Agebitashi/茄子の揚げ浸し or fried eggplant in a dashi and soy broth. I think I remember it being $8 or something similar and liking it a lot. I went with the Kamo Nanban/鴨南蛮 Soba while the other person went with the Kinoko Soba/きのこそば and we both got it hot (all the soba and udon dishes can also be served cold.) In my dish, kamo means duck (with nanban being exotic) and it was served with negi/spring onions and it is one of my preferred type of sobas. The duck was quite tender and the noodles had the proper texture and flavor I expect from buckwheat noodles. I wouldn't say that the duck was as good or the noodles as properly textured as my old preferred spot (Kokage) but the latter is unfortunately permanently closed and this made a good substitution. In the latter, kinoko means mushroom and this was in short a mixed mushroom soba and it certainly came with a good variety of mushrooms. I tried a bit of the latter and it was also very tasty. I heavily preferred this over Tsurutontan though I would like to try some of the other top soba places before calling this one my new favorite. Still very good and I can see why they've been opened for a long while. Low 4.

Celebrated a friend's belated birthday here, loved the Japanese inspired interior and such a cute lunch spot! No reservations so we went right when it opened and was pretty full for lunch time! I ordered the eel don and soba lunch set which was delicious (9/10)! The portions they gave you make it high value and I would definitely come back to try the other dons. Soba was fresh and broth was light. My friend ordered the tofu soba and realized soba wasn't her favorite. Overall, great lunch spot with good value on sets. Will be coming back to try their raw options!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the premier Soba restaurants in New York.
Authentic homemade noodles and broth. The food speaks for itself, if you know Soba, then this is your place. They have Sushi, Sashimi and other Izakaya fare as well.Oddly, most of the staff are not Japanese. A rare anomaly in the NYC authentic Japanese restaurant venues.I highly recommend this restaurant for Japanese food lovers.

Very cozy and delicious Japanese noodle house! We came for lunch set and there were a lot of selection with high quality ingredient. The lunch set came with soup soba, sushi over rice including salmon, salmon roe, and scallop. Though it was a bit crowded, it felt like very neat and organized. There were a family of four with two young kids sitting next to our table and they seemed to enjoy themselves very much as well.

This has been great place to go for satisfying soba noodle cravings.Love the cold soba noodle options for hot summer days like this season, but I can't wait to try the hot ones too!We got the plum wine (one straight and one with soda) to start. Then we ordered the Ten Zaru with chicken katsu on the side and the Chirashi Cold Noodles.Pros:*Shrimp tempura was amazing in both noodle dishes, was not dry, and was fried nicely*Soba noodles were Al dente, just as I like them*The egg (Dashimaki tamago) on the Chirashi Cold Noodles was also super tasty*Tastes really good with some wasabi mixed inCons:*Chicken katsu was a miss - too dry inside and outSeating was comfortable. The place was filled but not crowded and not so loud that you have to talk over people to hear the person you're listening/speaking to.Overall, would definitely come back!

Heard some pretty good things about Soba-ya and was interested in the lunch set deals, but was a bit disappointed. It was a good but nothing special. I hadn't had unagi (eel) in a while so it hit the spot and the cold soba noodles were refreshing during the hot summer. But the portions are a bit deceiving. It looks like a lot of noodles but there actually isn't much. As a visitor from out of town, I probably won't be back, but it offers a decent lunch.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful spot for authentic Japanese noodle dishes.
A few blocks away from the busy astor place, Soba-ya offers a great selection of Japanese classics that happens to be brilliantly executed, while retaining the comforting and familial style of the dishes in question. The dining room ambience is simple and clean, sporting classic Japanese colors and decor. Service is prompt, knowledgeable, and attentive, and the wait for the food is surprisingly short. The food is wonderful, with hearty dashi-based soups that can be topped with a selection of Japanese favorites like tempura, bean curd and fish cakes. The house made noodles (customer can choose between soba and udon) are of the highest quality and complement the rich soups excellently. Absolutely worth a stop!

Simple, fresh, tasty homemade soba noodles! Would recommend the cold noodles during hot summer season!

Our servers were quite rude from the moment we sat down until the moment that we left. We also noticed the same attitude being given to patrons around us. I'm not sure if everyone on staff was just having a bad day today, but the service was unacceptable.
Be the first to ReplyReally happy with this soba spot in East Village.
The weekend mini lunch set has limited options but they all look pretty good. Since it was such a hot day, I ended up going with the ten don and cold soba. The noodles were the perfect texture. The tempura was crispy and the sauce was a perfect balance of salty/sweet. I'm a pretty carb heavy person, so I was satisfied with the amount of food in the lunch set.Would definitely come back for their lunch specials.

Fantastic soba!! Loved their cold eggplant dish, so refreshing for the summer time. Their yuzu sale was also very good, didn't taste like there was any alcohol though. I enjoyed the cold radish soba the most. Can't wait to try some more cold soba dishes before summer end!
Be the first to ReplyA bit disappointed by the small portion.
.. I have been to Soba-ya for many years. I only go to the Japanese restaurants that are owned and staffed by Japanese -- there are way too many that are owned by "others" and the standard and quality is just not the same. Soba-ya was not my first choice, but a few better ones have since closed because of the pandemic. I had lunch and was disappointed at the small portion. The quality is still good. But I was still very hungry after paying $27. Don't think I will be going back.
Be the first to ReplyI have been coming to Soba-Ya for many many years and I
I have been coming to Soba-Ya for many many years and I loved it from day 1. I went 2 days ago and I was soooo frustrated, the menu is much smaller, much more comercial and americanized, the food is not the most authentic as it used to be. The savior of the night was actually the plain soba with no toppings, just their still homemade soba. I hope this is just a minor set back from covid and that they go back to being the best and most original place in Manhattan...

Went back recently, and can say Soba-ya is still one of my faves in the city. This place was crazy packed on a Friday evening. FYI, although one of their websites says no reservations, they definitely do take reservations, so I recommend calling in advance. Unfortunately if you put your name down for walk-in, you can't really leave because they won't call or text - they will only come outside and look for you. However, the food is as good as I remember it. The texture of the noodles/soba is fabulous, with the perfect "bite". I've never ordered the rice dishes, but my friend who ordered the chicken katsu don loved the dish. My only disappointment is that they didn't have the cold uni soba dish on the menu my most recent visit, as that used to be my go-to order. They have happy hour between 3-6pm on weekends with half price beer and discounted sake. Service is quick and courteous. My only suggestion would be to bring back the uni soba!
Be the first to ReplyI came back here again, craving udon and tempura.
They don't offer the old lunch set anymore with a small portion of everything. I guess since post pandemic businesses are struggling so I noticed the portions are smaller and for the same price we are getting less food. I got the tempura shrimp and veggie with a small bowl of udon. That's about $22. Prior to pandemic we would get a lot more food for the same price. I believe we got salmon, mash potatoes and seaweed salad etc. there were a mix of small sides. But this time just tempura and noodles available plus a bowl of rice. It was a bit disappointing , I hope they offer the old menu again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and decent priced.
Delicious soba and the sashimi was fresh. Uni ja rice box at $22 is expensive for the amount but everything else was very good
Be the first to ReplySoba-ya is like a haven in bustling Manhattan.
We decided to eat here around 4PM on a Sunday after forgoing the wait at Hi-Collar. Immediately upon walking in, we all enter a collective state of calm due to the Japanese style dining room. The low lighting, quiet music, spacious tables, ample social distancing, and warmth of the restaurant beckoned us to sit down and have a happy meal. Service was very efficient. Of course, the restaurant is known for its soba but I don't like buckwheat noodles so I opted for my eternal love, sushi. I got the sake salmon don, a rice bowl topped with buttery slices of salmon sashimi and ikura. We also ordered hot tea for the table. They only had green tea, but no complaints. The piping, bold tea warmed our souls and kept us hydrated as we enjoyed our meal and conversation. My don was simple yet delicious. The ingredients were clearly very fresh. The salmon was so smooth and came with plain cuts as well as sake marinated slices. It wasn't anything too unique but it was exactly what I was craving. I think the relaxing ambiance and comforting dishes here are great for an intimate dinner over comforting dishes. I love how the tea was only $1 for the whole table and they gave unlimited refills.
