A truly remarkable experience
Located in the University Heights neighborhood of San Diego, Soichi Sushi is a Michelin star award-winning eatery specializing in Omakase service, where you essentially put your dining experience in the hands of the chef, who selects and prepare the offerings in front of you. My son and I dined here in late October 2022. NOTE that the restaurant is very small and extremely popular, so advance reservations are a must. On our visit, Chef Soichi was taking care of half the customers, while we were attended to by his sous chef, Chef Daniel, who is a second-generation sushi chef. Each dish is served separately one-at-a-time to allow you as the diner to focus of the uniqueness of each piece of sushi. As an American of Japanese descent, Iโve eaten a great deal of sushi in my day, but I was served some fish that Iโve never had on sushi before. Everything was incredibly fresh and artfully presented, and I really appreciated Chef Danielโs engaging demeanor. Every bite was a delicious new adventure. Chef Soichi is also a wonderful host, interacting will all his patrons. In fact, upon discovering that one of the customers was celebrating a birthday, he pulled out a guitar and led everyone in a rendition of โHappy Birthday.โ In addition, the wait staff was extremely gracious and attentive. Make no mistake, a meal at Soichi Sushi is going to be expensive, but if youโre celebrating a special occasion or just want a memorable dining experience, a visit here is highly recommended.

What an amazing dinner experience! The staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We had the Omakase menu and everything was mouthwatering, delicious and so fresh! I tried things I would never order on my own and SO glad I did. You could see and taste how everything from start to finish was prepared with such quality and care! Will definitely be back to try the sushi bar experience.

QUICKIE REVIEW
This is the premier place for sushi. If you are looking for sushi rolls, this is not the place. You need a reservation for dinner, no walk-ins.
FOOD
This is what I tried:
Omakase
Nigiri Omakase
I have been here twice and had both of their omakase (big and medium). Honestly you cannot go wrong with either one. Only thing that I would mention is that if you go with their nigiri omakase, you may be left wanting more if you were starving. First time I came I ordered enough additional side dishes to equal the cost of the bigger omakase. If you have an appetite, I recommend starting with that.
PARKING
No, street parking is where itโs at.
SERVICE
Great. As it is a small location, waitresses are constantly checking up on you.
PRICE
$135 for the eight course omakase.
TIP/OTHER THOUGHTS
First, do not just try and show up for dinner. You have to go to their site and make reservations. On that note, book as early as possible. It has always been competitive and even more so now that they have a Michelin star.
Bad service
We arrive 9:10 after driving half hour and they did not give a table because they โreceiveโ people until 8:30 pm, sucks!!!
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful surprise!
Well, we booked this restaurant on a Sunday to celebrate my wife's birthday. We are huge sushi fans and love exploring new places, specially places that are recommended as traditional and that have omakase. So we knew it was good as it's always difficult to book and appears on a lot of best of lists. Turns out they were right. It ranks up there with places like Ota and Tadokor as the best in San Diego. Omakase was delicious, highlights included the Oyster, Toro, Golden Eye and Red Snapper. Service was also fantastic, turns out the place is really small and cute, we loved the traditional look with no fancy bells and whistles, just regular good old Japanese style. Please do yourself a favor a go to this wonderful place, you won't regret it.

We went there during Covid 19. Our outdoor seating was in the middle of street. We ordered Omakase (85$) per person. It was like a course meal. Each dish was authentic, creative, special and fresh but overall, I felt that it was too expensive for the food ( prob worth 50$.)
The parking was painful. There was no Valet parking. We parked on the street.
Friday dinner
Outstanding sushi and service. Every bite we had was a treat. The chef makes you feel like family and is clearly passionate about what heโs preparing for you. Friendly, attentive service, in a cozy setting. Try the pickled vegetables and let the chef be creative and pick selections for you. Highly recommended

Amazing service and food. I took my mom on a date for our last night in San Diego and highly recommend it. If you want good, traditional sushi, highly recommended to come here.
It is a family owned and run business. Sakura (Cherry Blossom) was amazing. She is the daughter of the Chef and was incredibly helpful throughout our visit.
If you are looking for good and traditional Japanese food, do not doubt in coming here.
I do not have enough good things to say about this place.
Incredible tasty.
Lately Iโve been spending a lot of time in San Diego. And I got tired of always eating sushi at the others big brands franchisee. Found this place by accident and already become my favorite one in San Diego area. Each bite from their menu was an explosion of freshness straight from the sea to the chef table. Definitely going back for more incredible taste from this authentic restaurant.

Make a reservation. You'll need one. Chef Soichi has outdone himself at his new location in North Park. Los Angeles sushi meccas have nothing on him. Come to Soichi for the freshest, best prepared sushi in San Diego. The relaxed, welcoming, uncluttered restaurant is a breath of fresh sea air. Order omakase and let the chef do the honors.
