I love this place.
So much! I order it all the time and like to bring friends from out of town here. I always order the Khao Pad Kraprao Moo (minced pork and basil fried rice with an egg) and it's very spicy and delicious! Usually fills up in weekends but we walked in as a group of 5 one Saturday and only waited 10 minutes.

Really knocked my socks off with the exotic-ness of the dishes. From raw shrimp to amazing specialties. The decor is nice and vibration with a mysterious vibe on the outside. The place was busy and poppin with no spare on service. The waiter was always alert and catered to all my request with a kind gesture. Need recommendations, they got you! Need to adjust your spicyness to some dishes, say less and tell em. The taste was definitely unique and I would come back to try more dishes. They're specials are really good and changes from time to time so you get something new each time. Would def go here if I feel for some Thai and spicy.

I have been to Somtum Der more than a handful of times and will continue making the trip out for more trips. Somtum Der, in my opinion, is the best Thai restaurant in Manhattan and top five in NYC. The service is quick and the food is so flavorful, you'll be asking for seconds while still at the table.Every time I have gone, I have ordered both the Papaya Salad which they are famous for and the Pad Kee Mao. The Papaya Salad is so spicy and hits flavors I have never experienced, sweet, salty and sour mixed into an incredible bite. The Pad Kee Mao is the one dish I would go running back to Somtum Der for. The noodles are so perfectly cooked every time and the flavor and texture of each bite is incredibly unique. Somtum Der needs to be on your NYC hit list. I fell in love with this place the first time I visited and will always bring guests here from out of town, it is incredible.

Tried Tom Klong Pla Dook Yang (fried fish soup) this time, liked the flavor, but the fried fish became soggy in the soup...Moo Yor Tod (looks like tofu, taste like sausage) and Goong Char Nam Pla (shrimp sashimi) are as good as before.

The chicken appetizer here was amazing, so crispy and the sauce was perfect with it. The drinks were also delicious. The pad see eiw was one of my favorite I've tried. They have so many interesting dishes here if you're not vegetarian. Highly recommend!

We had a fantastic meal at Somtum Der with our friends the other day! We didn't get pictures of all of our dishes (we came hungry!), every bite was delicious. I would say my favorite was the pork skewers or the fried chicken thigh. We tried getting the thai tea Panna cotta (apparently, they're really well known for it), but unfortunately, they were out of it by the time we ordered it.
Be the first to ReplyI've been here twice.
The first time was a late night unplanned dinner and I remember being very impressed with the pad se ew as it was unique in that it tasted like it had a lot of white pepper. I love white pepper. The service was fast and friendly. The second time I tried the yum trai kai sardine which was very different from any Thai food I've had before. It was salty. It was sour. It was definitely very good! The pad ki mao was ok.Recently my friend went to a Somtum der in a different borough. I had no clue it had multiple locations. Overall, the food was good and worth trying once, but Soothr still remains my go to dine in and take out Thai place in the neighborhood.
Be the first to Replyunderrated! Adorable spot and was easy to get a reservation.
Thai cuisine but more unique than the basic spots. Would recommend! Dishes are good for sharing

They also have real menus now which are very nice and describe everything well.

My advice is to read the menu online before coming to the restaurant. I found the menu slightly confusing and needed more time to read it since there's a lot there to pick from. I always get the pork larb (not lard) salad and sticky rice on the side. My recommendation is to get the pork larb salad spicy (the regular way). Don't tone the spice down because it won't be the same. It's better when you sweat a little! Get a Thai tea to go with it as it will make the spice more manageable. About the sticky rice- Sticky rice comes in a container and then the rice is wrapped in plastic. Unwrap it and eat it somewhat fast with the larb salad because the rice will harden when the air hits it. The staff in this restaurant is very nice and really seems to care about the customer. Also random fact- on my first visit here, I met a famous YouTuber.

Many people recommended this place to me when they've heard that I planned my vacation in NYC. I looked it up and promised myself that I had to visit SomTum der!Worth walking from subway station I wish I could order more because there were so many dishes I have been craving since I haven't been back to Thailand almost 3 years because of the pandemic. Not a single complaint at all and from what I have tried today...... I could say that they tasted authentic to me as a Thai person who was born and raised thereWhy are you Still reading? Get out and try it now :)
Be the first to Reply5 stars, their papaya salad is insanely delicious.
a burst of flavor and freshness in every bite. the pad thai is good too, heavier on the sauce which i like. their grilled entrees aren't amazing, just 4 stars for those.

Coming here with high expectations because it had new and interesting Thai dishes, I just thought the food here was ok. The pork skewers weren't that flavorful, the dipping sauce gave it some flavorful but for the price, nothing to write home about. The rice dish with the assortment of different toppings I thought was just ok too, pretty basic. I went for the different Thai dishes and not ones that everyone gets (like pad thai), but came away underwhelmed.

The portion is on the smaller end, but this price is definitely not bad for a Michelin recommended restaurant! I'm a big fan of basil and I really enjoyed this kraprao! A bit on the salty side but manageable - spices made me sweat I guess that's another sign of authenticity haha!

Som Tum (Thai papaya salad) is one of my favorite dishes of all time, so a restaurant that specializes in it is a dream come true.Their grilled sticky rice is my favorite thing off the menu, besides the som tum of course.

Som tum der never disappoints!! The papaya salad with salted egg was amazing and extremely flavorful. Since it's quite salty and rich, it would go well with some jasmine rice. Another appetizer I always get is the fried chicken thigh! Amazing seasoning and chicken is very juicy. The pad Thai and Pad See Ew was delicious too
Be the first to ReplySomtum Der is a popular Thai eatery in the east village.
I was pleased to find a day accept reservations, and I definitely recommend making one if you can because it gets crowded! The menu is a bit confusing but it is helpful that there are photos of each dish listed. When you order they will also ask you what spice level you want. I went with medium because I found that medium is usually not that spicy, but it was pretty spicy here, so beware! To start our table ordered the fried chicken which was served with a spicy dipping sauce. It's good for a max of 3-4 people since the pieces are pretty small. My friend and I shared a larb dish and pad kee mao noodles. Both were tasty and on the smaller side. I think I could have eaten a little more! But prices are pretty reasonable, so I recommend ordering as your heart desires to be safe! I also tried the Thai iced tea. I thought the tea flavor was a bit under developed, it probably should've been brewed longer. But overall the food was good and I would be happy to come back to try more. Side note- if you're considering coming for a birthday, they have a fun tradition of blasting a birthday song so that the whole restaurant celebrates with you!
Be the first to ReplyThis place was worth the hype.
We ordered the papaya salad, pork skewers, pad thai and one of the rice dishes. Everything was delicious-- we cleaned every single dish off. I also got a Lychee Martini which was amazing as well. By far the best Thai I've had outside of Thailand. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyThe food here was amazing.
Must come back for more. The balance of flavors. The authentic taste. Mind blowing. Besides just tasting fantastic The most unique dish of the evening the really spoke volumes was the bamboo shoot side dish. My taste buds have never tasted something so exquisite and flavorful. Must try !
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Thai food.
We have been here 2 times and both times everything that we ordered was amazing. Their appetizers are really good! Great cocktails. Seating is limited, but the ambience is lively. Food can be ordered to be spicy. I would recommend making reservations ahead of time. For the quality of food, the pricing is very reasonable. Would be a good date spot.
Be the first to ReplyEasily the BEST Thai restaurant in all of NYC.
I've been twice in one week and I was blown away by the quality and taste of the dishes here. The biggest differentiating factor was that the food is here is far less oily than most other Thai restaurants I've been to. The pad Thai and pad see ew were my favorites- perfectly seasoned and the spice was on point. Service was super fast and efficient and the ambience inside made it feel like a true authentic Thai experience.
Be the first to ReplyOmg literally authentic Thai food I love it.
It tasted like what u would order in Thailand and the spice level matches with an actual Thai person. Their Tom zap is rlly spicy and so good. Their garlic pork and rice is pretty average nothing special and their chicken is also average. This is equivalent to a food court in Thailand and would def come back. The price is pretty acceptable too, it is was $250 for 8 people and we each got a dish and some appetizers to share.
